My card was skimmed and I filed a report. The person wouldn't believe my claim and kept denying it was fraudulent. Really bad experience. For what my word is worth, the atm charges really were not mine and I was at work all day while someone used my card to rack up a bunch of charges at some bar near my house (about $100). I feel so vulnerable and exposed. This has happened before with other banks, and I always receive the money back. I never have been treated by someone like this reports person at 1st united bank. I never ever write a review. I feel like I am compelled by the situation. I started using this bank because of an old car loan. Now, I am pulling all of my money right now. I was asked to wait outside until about 10 minutes after my scheduled appointment (I arrived about 10 minutes early) only to be told by the same person that asked me to wait outside that my appointment was canceled because no manager was present. It took them two hours to simply create a checking account for me and my partner. I think this should take 15 minutes at most. I could forgive that as a one-time staffing ineptitude that happens. But what makes them a bank worth NOT considering is the horrible online banking experience. Their online banking doesn't have basic features. So, for example if I write a physical check and I forget who that check was for when I'm doing my accounting, there is no way of finding out. If a physical check is deposited, it just says "deposit" and the amount. It does not indicate who the check is from. So, if you are doing any basic accounting and need to double check something, you can't rely on their bill pay software to provide info (other banks will address this by having a picture of your check deposited clickable). They've deposited money to incorrect accounts numerous times. The only reason I didn't give them a 1 star is I presume their money is not invested in prisons and stuff like that. I like the idea of a community bank. But my experience with 1st United has been lacking. read more

I don't know anything about the credit union itself, as I've never stepped foot inside. This is a review of 1st United Credit Union's ATM, and this review has been years in the making. I'm a member of a different credit union, and I used this ATM for a year or so because it was the closest credit-union ATM to my work. Then my credit union cheaped out and issued me a debit card without raised numbers, and 1st United Credit Union's ATM wouldn't accept the card, probably because a card with a magnetic strip but no raised numbers is likely to be a clone. In any case, although at the time I applauded 1st United Credit Union's apparent commitment to security, I could no longer use its Milvia Street ATM, even though I tried every six months or so. A few months back, my credit union finally got with the program and issued me a debit card with raised numbers and a security chip. (A security chip!) I had to try 1st United Credit Union's ATM again because USE Credit Union on Shattuck is a little too far and because Patelco Credit Union's branch on Shattuck burned down along with Mandarin Garden (RIP). The big day was here. For the first time since 2011 or 2012, I could use this conveniently located ATM. I inserted my card, chose English, entered my PIN, chose to withdraw $200 from checking, and guess what? 1st United Credit Union's ATM asked me whether I wanted my money in twenties or in hundreds! What? I used to live in the Midwest, and I know some ATMs there disburse tens, fives, and even ones along with the normal twenties; but this is California, and I've never seen an ATM that didn't do only twenties. And who ever heard of getting hundreds from an ATM? So of course I canceled my transaction, reinserted my card, chose English, entered my PIN, and chose to withdraw $180 from checking. I then chose the hundreds option. Bingo. A hundred-dollar bill and four twenties later, and I was ecstatic. I can get hundreds from a conveniently located credit-union ATM! Not that I really need hundreds, but I like being able to get them. This ATM is wonderful, although its location could be secured a little better. read more

came into the branch in Berkeley to ask what was needed to open an account here for both myself and my children and was told that I would need my ssn card. Understanding procedures and policy, the way that it was explained seemed like it was optional at one point and a requirement at another during the conversation. I asked that since it was stated that "sometimes" the system would ask for a copy I could at least start the process to see if it would indeed ask for a copy of my ssn. She (maybe the manager) said yes however we'd recommend you just come in with it. It did not seem like she wanted to even try and it felt like I was being discriminated against. Being that she could have started the process to see whether or not I would need a copy but made a choice not to is not a good look for people looking to do business with 1st United. I am knowledgeable about credit unions however I understand that there are procedures that must be followed, this seemed more of a optional thing that could have been accommodated but it appeared that they would rather inconvenience a person. Not here to bad mouth this CU, just share an experience. I may try a different location but I will never patronize this location as I feel that I was brushed off because they simply didn't want to assist. read more

Amazing service! There was a long line as the ATM outside was not working at it was close to closing and the staff were so kind and patient to make sure everyone waiting was helped. DO NOT get a loan with this company. They are the definition of bait and switch. They are all sugar and spice when you first talk to them, but ever since I opened accounts and took out an auto loan with them, it has been a different story. There is always some "other" gobbledy gook story that has to be tracked down and wastes a lot of time. They quoted me a rate when I first applied and then later tried to jack up the rate once the auto dealer had written up the contract. I contested and threatened to walk, and they honored the original rate. Since then, it's always something. The website is clunky and the on line support is very spotty. Gobbledy gook that pretends to help, but does not actually help and sometimes creates more confusion. Since they, I have caught them tacking on false "interest" and fake late fees on payments that I've been well ahead of. If you value your time and your money, don't fall for their tricks. They are just not that good to do business with. read more

Worst bank I've ever been a member of. This is not an exaggeration. When they had tellers they "stopped accepting coins for deposit." You're a bank, accepting money is literally all you are supposed to do. They claim to be community oriented but they replaced all the tellers with machines. The wait times on the phone are egregious. When you do get someone on the phone and they say the need to transfer you--they offer to give you the "direct number" in case you get disconnected, but this number is LITERALLY the general phone number printed on the back of the card. They send you letters for benefits you qualify for, when you speak with a counselor to get more information they assure you that you will be approved, and then when you apply they deny you and lower your credit score. This has happened to me multiple times. I can't wait to move and leave this awful, predatory bank. read more

If you want to avoid the big banks charging you like crazy, the credit unions are good alternative options. Most of them are good and some are better than others. 1st United Services Credit Union in Berkeley is one of the better one. I've just opened an account here but my first impression was very positive. I looked the costumers there and observed satisfaction in their faces. 1st United Services CU is insured both by NCUA and ASI. Some credit unions are insured only by ASI. I would avoid them during this though economic times. It is time to become more mature regarding our financial situation. When you open a new account they ask you if you want to get their credit card. If you don't need one just say no and they will leave you alone. Overall, I recommend 1st United Services Credit Union, the Berkeley branch to all of you. NA. read more
