I never thought I would rate a bank as most people who do are probably angry or upset for some random reason... However, after looking at yelp to find the nearest Wells Fargo I read the reviews then went in to for service for the last few months and have finally decided to write a review of my experience and my reaction to the reviews I read... If you read the negative reviews you can clearly see that most of the instances have to do with the customers being the issue and not actually rating the bank as decent upstanding citizens since they don't know how banking works or see the world through terribly depressed lenses. :( Allen F. writes "...branch became unhappy, greedy..." Well gosh Allen, its a bank, they are unhappy because they have to serve the likes of you Allen, and greedy? Do you think its their money? The institution sets the rules not the employees at this branch!!! LOL Allen, get a life man! Go hide your money under your mattress. C.O. writes "...because of THEIR upgrade to THEIR system..." hahaha yes, it is their system, not yours. why the need to capitalize that? If you expect a bank to keep your things safe then why complain if they upgrade their system? It just makes no sense. I have had consistently wonderful service at this Wells Fargo. The employees all strive to do their best even when the local population can be demanding, entitled and obnoxious. I have witnessed customers trying to get in the door before the bank has opened then screamed at the employees, people being rude and angry in line when an employee greets them and all the while the tellers have helped me with a smile and have been gracious. Honestly, I now do most of my banking online but when I need to go to the bank I choose this branch! I have no idea how you deal with all the angry customers (most with dementia) but whatever your secret is for delivering excellent customer service.. keep it up! read more

I am no longer a customer of WFB due to their unethical business practices and have been a victim of same recently. I got a letter from them saying that they had signed me up for Identity Theft Protection product that I never signed up for - got two letters so they signed me up for this twice and they are going to reimburse me for the costs of this. I was supposed to receive the payments in January 2024 but have not yet and when I call to follow up the payments are still pending. So they cannot even make restitution in a timely manner. I am glad I switched from this bank. I am usually a very low key customer and had banked with them for years but this signing people up for products that they do not want is totally unethical and a really poor business practice. It is dishonest. About this branch though - I alway got good service here and the people are really nice so I will add stars for that. The tellers here are really nice. I was profiled and discriminated against at this bank branch. I was written a personal check to deposit as work for hire, and after being inappropriately asked "what did you do for all this money?!" I respectfully replied "I don't need to disclose that information" and added "do you also ask white businessmen what they do for money when they bring in a big check?" They then told me "make sure you know what to do with this money, don't spend it all before it clears because you'll be responsible for that should this be fraud." They also asked me 3 times if I knew who wrote me the check, AFTER I disclosed that the person who wrote the check contacted his bank ahead of time to clear and approve this check number AND dollar amount. THE DISRESPECT HERE. WOW. Unfortunately they then lied to my face, told me I could deposit the check and gave me the dates when the funds would clear into my account. I thought everything was alright because I walked away with a receipt in hand, all to then be chased down on the street being told "you have to come back so we can contact the senders bank" .... But they already processed my check officially! I sat for 20-30 more minutes all for them to tell me "we made a decision as a bank that we cannot deposit this check after" .... Which was a load of crap. I've banked with Wells Fargo for over 20 years, and they just lost a customer. They will be receiving an official complaint as I'm filing a discrimination claim. I had a great experience with Larry who is a personal banker. We needed advice on what to do with our 91 year old friend savings. Larry made some great recommendations and he knows what he is talking about. He was very patient while we weighed all of the options. Wells Fargo online customer service is the worst. I had a small transaction that I wanted to dispute. I spoke to a person, explained my situation and he instantly cancel my debit card. He didn't even give me a chance to say what would be the next steps in this process. in addition, he stated he was going to send me a new card in 10 days. I explained that I really needed my old card, because I was leaving town.The wells fargo customer service man told me because he made the decision to cancel my card. Sal, thanks for taking care of my kid. With his first paycheck in hand, my son wanted to handle his own banking affairs. Sal, a banking associate, took my child through the steps of endorsing the check, making a depost, and getting cash back. About $15 is taken out of his check for retirement. We checked with bank manager, Larry. Once my kid finishes his summer gig, he can roll it over to a Wells Fargo retirement account! A great lesson learned on personal finance. Complete incompetence top to bottom. Made an appointment online. Received confirmation email. Received confirmation phone call. Show up exactly on time. The 'banker' doesn't show up for another 15 minutes. And that was just the start. It took over an hour to complete something very simple. In the middle of it, to add insult to injury, one of the 'bankers' decides to tell me how my boss should be conducting his business.... how about having YOUR bankers show up on time? How about having YOUR bankers be properly trained? How about something really really simple, like having your brand new safety deposit boxes be aligned in numerical order instead of RANDOM??? Berkeley's Wells Fargo on College Ave has the worst customer service by management I have felt in a bank, ever. I have accounts at both Berkeley and Piedmont and they are as different as the Inferno and Paradiso. I've been a Wells member for decades and loved it until this last couple years when the Berkeley branch became an unhappy, greedy, compassionless place. (The tellers are great in both branches.) OMG, what happened to Wells Fargo customer service? They definitely need more training on how to treat your customers. No thank you, no bye once you finish your transaction. Even though the security guard would say goodbye to me. The last 5 times experience was terrible, terrible. Wells Fargo teller are no longer friendly and nice. When you ask for old bills, they will tell you they don't have it, but when you ask can I please have whatever you have in the drawer? She could have at least 20-40 old bills there. And they won't go to the next teller to get the old bills for you. One teller even told me to go back to the line to wait for the next teller if I want some old bills. Do you love fees? Then this is the bank for you! I am moving away from using my accounts here, and I'll tell you why. There are many many tirades I can relate about Wells Fargo in general, but here's something you may not have thought of: I used the bill pay online service, which mails a check to my indented recipient. I'd been using it to pay my daughters preschool bills. My account has a $1000 minimum balance before they charge me a fee. (Why?) I had about $1500 in my account. On the first of the month, I used bill pay to send a check for $1000. I also transferred this same amount from another bank account to cover the minimum balance. The funds from my other account arrived by the 5th. The check wasn't cashed by the preschool until the 8th, but the $1000 was deducted from my account on the 1st. And I was charged a fee for being below minimum balance. So where was the money between the 1st and 8th? Wells fargo took the $1000 from my account (and charged me a fee for that), but it sure wasn't in any other account I know of. Not in my daughter's preschool's account. Normally when I write a check the money gets transferred when the check is cashed. But not for this. Wells Fargo held onto my $1000 for 8 days, using it for what they like. I could speculate - they added it to a hedge fund of billions of such surreptitiously held dollars, and traded stocks with it using a supercomputer that spots market discrepancies and executes trades in nanoseconds, earning them more money for nothing. For this, for using my money without telling me about it, they charge me a fee. Well, fuck you dishonest bankers. If you don't use ATM's much, I highly recommend cooperative center federal credit union for banking in the east bay. Wow, Wells Fargo went above and beyond my expectations for a bank. The employees here are genuinely happy and willing to help you with your banking needs. I stopped by Wells Fargo last week to open up a bank account for an association. As soon as I walked into the door, before I had time to scope out the branch, I was immediately greeted by one of the personal bankers, Kitty. I was only expecting to ask a few question and get some information for this special type of account, but Kitty made the process so easy, I opened up a bank account on the spot. She was very knowledgeable and explained everything very clearly. I was also very impressed that the service manager, Helai, was incredibly friendly and helpful as well. You can really sense that they truly value your business and want you to have a pleasant banking experience. I returned to this branch this afternoon to drop off some forms and I was again greeted by several smiling faces as I walked through the door. Kitty and Helai both recognized me and acknowledged me by my first name. They even remembered that I forgot to take the promotional stuffed pony last week for opening up a new bank account. I usually don't write a lot of comments but for this particular place I will after all this nonsense from people. I come here twice a month to cash my check. I have never had a bad experience with any of the employees. But on the other hand most of their customers are so DEMANDING. They treat employees like trash and not like human beings. I have witness several times customers being impatient, disrespectful and using profanity towards them. I understand that we are all going through difficult times but it doesn't mean that us as customers are to treat them badly. It seems like nobody has ever worked in customer service nor understand what happens behind the scenes. Yes there is always room for improvement but non of us are able to judge!!! A piece of advice. Don't ever hire this bank to manage your estate. The day you die and the bank steps up to distribute your estate, they'll just sit on it forever. They won't move a finger unless your beneficiaries force them to move on. Even so they'll make sure the process becomes extremely hard and almost impossible! This whole process might take years! Of course I suspect that the bank benefits itself from holding on to the money for as long as they can. Do yourself a favor and hire a good lawyer you can trust. Holy crap these people are nice. Wells Fargo must have one intense business plane, because these workers will smile at you until you feel like you are on stage. I have never been able to leave this store without at least 3 people saying hi. They never give any guff about how bad I am at spending money, or the half heart way I fill out deposit slips. Sometimes they will take me to the special cubicles to solve my problems which is nice, but it takes a very long time. Once I sat with the charming lady for 45 minutes to get my pin changed. This is the worst Wells Fargo within 50 miles! I've never been able to get money from here, I've come to this bank several times looking for help getting a check through so I can pay my bills. Not once, have I EVER been able to get someone with even half a brain to help me out. I came to this branch and they turned me away, once again. They told me that "They could only give me $100 the next day and the rest would become available in 5 business days"! I then went to SF (on the same day, Monday) and went to another branch and they gladly said " Here is your money" like they always have. Luckily, I called this branch and the manager Parwana picked up. She took the initiative and got everything in place for my client, finding an available bank agent, and directly contacting my client to schedule an immediate appointment. I've had a Wells Fargo account for about seven years now. The people in Wells Fargo always seem to be really nice. It was great how everyone was dressed up in costumes here on Halloween. There are a ton of banks around, so it is convenient to get to an ATM or talk to a teller. I like how the ATMs can just scan your deposited checks now--it's pretty amazing how even messy handwriting seems to be scanned correctly. Their online banking services are very well setup and easy to use. I also just found out today that you can get a bag from them, put all your coins into the bag, and they will send it off to be machine counted and deposit the money straight into your account. Great service! No more trying to find a Coinstar machine, which takes like 8% of your money. read more

Oh my goodness, this place is awesome. Everyone sooooooo nice. I used to bank with Bank of America but I got tired of all the fees. So I went into the branch just to ask questions and they got me hooked. This guy helped me, his name was Gregory, he explained everything to me. He told me about the different options they had and really made me feel like he valued my opinion. Some places just force everything down your throat but not here. That banker showed a genuine interest in me and how I felt. He even introduced me to other bankers at the branch and they were just as nice. It's going to sound weird, but I love this bank and this branch. I have my "personal banker" there whom I see every time and who knows me, and I can always count on first-rate, personal attention. It's like walking into an old bank in a little town from long ago, before everything turned digital and customer service all but disappeared. This place really is different. (For comparison, a few months ago I had to walk into a nearby BofA to deliver a mortgage payment for a sick friend. Yuck! The people there were all made up and phony and the furnishings were yucky and it even smelled terrible!) I have only one complaint about Wells at Elmwood: I hate their new "welcome" policy. The moment you walk in, someone is standing there to accost you with "welcome to Wells Fargo," almost as if you just walked into the Apple store. Then there's the phony "have a nice day" when you leave. This seems to be a new policy and I wish they'd get rid of it. They don't need it and are too good for this, since you always receive a real (not phony) welcome from the actual teller or representative you're dealing with. read more

I finally sent a letter to the manager, Larry Fukunaga, to which I received no response. Here are excerpts of the letter detailing the issue: Context: I met with banker ___________ on 02/25/11 to inquire about when my new debit card would be shipped, and to add my SSN to my account (I am not a US-Resident, and just got my SSN). Mr. ___________ told me that to register my SSN, I had to create a new account and close the current one. I accepted. Since then the problems started. Issue #1 Mr. ___________ got my general consent on closing my account and opening a new one, but did NOT get my consent on the specifics of when to start the process. He specifically said we could wait a few days before closing the old account; suggestion that I approved because I wanted to have some time to think about the consequences of closing my accounts, and what actions I had to take before this operation. (It was almost the end of the month, rent, bills, and other automatic payments were coming) However, 10 minutes further into the process, Mr. ___________ told me that my accounts were closed, that my checks and debit card were not usable anymore. I had to wait more than a week before receiving a new debit card. I thus had to get $300 in cash to buy groceries and pay bills in the meantime, and rely on friends for online/virtual bills. Mr. ___________ should have asked me to confirm the specific time when to close my account. Moreover, he should have reviewed with me the consequences of this operation on my financial activities. Issue #2 I asked Mr. ___________ to deposit on my new accounts the exact same amounts as were on my previous accounts before closure, minus the $300 cash withdrawal I was making. For some reason, he did not. Instead of the $155 on my Savings and the rest on my Checking, he deposited only $100 on the Savings, the rest on the Checking. I had to correct it myself later, because these numbers have a significance in my personal accounting. Issue #3 During the same meeting on 02/25/11, I deposited a $460 check on my new Checking account. After Mr. ___________ indicated me that I should go see someone at the counter for this operation, he finally accepted to do it. However, the deposit did NOT appear on my account in time. Six days later, I inquired by email to Mr. ___________ about this check. He did not reply regarding the check. The next day, I called the branch to inquire. I was explained that it was an error of the bank, and they credited my account immediately. I don't know the specific responsibility of Mr. ___________ with this error, but it was highly inconvenient for me: I had to delay the payment of my rent because of Wells Fargo's error. Issue #4 After the 02/25/11 meeting and the unexpected closure of my accounts, I had lost access to ALL my bank statements, which were stored online in PDF format. Mr. ___________ did not inform me of this inconvenience. I called him directly, and he said he would email them to me, but I had to come to the bank to verify my identity. I came to the branch 3 days after the 1st meeting, and he explained to me that he could only send me the statements for 2010 - I would have to pay for previous statements. Not knowing about this rule, I asked him to send me all the statements that were free. He said he would send them to me the next day. He did not. I had to email him again 3 days later to request my statements. Mr. ___________ replied to my email 2 hours later, with the PDF files in attachements, but no message accompanying them. The email was empty: no apology, no "hello", nothing. Mr. ___________ sent all statements for 2010. He did not sent the statements for the beginning of 2011, even though they were available for free. read more

If I could give this branch zero stars I would. I used to come here weekly for my banking needs and always felt taken care off. I don't know what happened maybe new management or something but the customer service now is ripe with rot. They are a bunch of lazy folks. There was three free bankers, I needed a replacement card and the teller tells me I have to make an appointment! There are three Bankers standing by doing nothing and they have the nerve to tell me I have to make an appointment! This is crazy. I need my card! I already cancelled it and on the phone they guaranteed I could get a temporary one at this branch. I wasted my day didn't get my card and on top of that this lady who works there viviana? A manager Wanna be If that even is her name kept insulting me telling me to lower my voice. I have an ear defect that doesn't allow me to control my decibel level. I tried communicating this with her and she said I was causing a scene. My disability doesn't allow me to control my voice decibel. If i had the power to fire anyone it would be that lady Viviana. She clearly isn't cut out to deal with customers. She threatened to call the police on me. All I was trying to do was get a temporary card and have access to my money. I will be contacting the Americans with disabilities league. She needs training and compassion. Clearly needs to be fired or demoted because the power has gone to her head. read more

This location is the closest one to my house but I dread going here every time! I usually will go to a much further location on Broadway just because there never is any parking at this location. The parking lot only holds 9 cars and there isn't any street parking either. Not to mention the congestion in just getting there. Time to switch banks! read more

I really love this location! I frequent many Wells locations: The one by my house in the Dimond, the one by my business in SF at 16th and Valencia/Mission, and now this one, because it is closest to my Oakland businesses. They are extremely helpful here, there is never a wait, and I have never once had an issue parking in the parking lot, thanks to the sweet man that supervises the lot. I received a call when Violet Eugenio wanted to cash a check we wrote to our local contractor who was working on our property who didn't have account with wells Fargo after answering 6 identity question she still refused to cash a check on the bases the contractor doesn't have an account with them. I said well I have an account with you I am your customer not him you are serving me not him finally I drove to bank and gave them my ID to cash a check she was rude and believed she was doing me a favor clearly doesn't understand customer service. At first I thought the friendliness of the staff was a bit creepy, sort of like Safeway to the power of 10. But eventually I realized it's for real. These people are really nice! And they all seem genuinely happy! (My wife has a crush on one of the guy managers. She even admits it...) Look, a bank is a bank, but this one really feels like a neigborhood bank. This WF branch is a disappointment. This bank is located in a lovely area of Berkeley and it's the branch my son uses while a student. He had an issue that was clearly the fault of Wells Fargo and put him in financial bind. I drove 100 miles there to help him out and we were given the truth-denying, finger-pointing run around for 45 minutes. Unfortunately no one at that bank branch has any authority to resolve problems made by WF. We were denied help because no one had the authority to correct WF's mistake. Most irritating was the "head" banker who not only was condescendingly ineffectual, but then decided he could be insulting. Very annoyed. read more
