Although this Oakland Provident branch is not my main branch, Brenda Stewart went above and beyond to help me through this process while my home branch gave up. I was so happy when I opened my account with Provident Credit Union. I was always treated so well - the manager used to come out and greet me when I came into the bank. That was a long time ago. That branch burned down and I haven't seen those people since that happened. It took them years to open another branch in Oakland. Fast forward to now. I am so disappointed with this credit union, I will be closing my account next week and moving on. The first thing they started doing wrong was instead of depositing my Social Security check on a Wednesday, they started holding it until Friday. I called to find out why and I was told "We have two days to deposit it and we'll do it when we are ready." Then I was scammed. I went into the credit union to talk about it and I was assured they had "got it all" and I wouldn't be losing ANY money. I was so happy! But that night at midnight, I saw two items clear for a total of $1,200. At the urging of a credit union employee, I filed papers for fraud. She had PROMISED me nothing was going to clear from my account, and yet $1,200 was gone! Shortly thereafter, I received a letter saying there was NO FRAUD and if I wanted to dispute it I should call a number and speak with Julio. I called and I called and I called - but Julio was always "gone for the day," "He just stepped out for lunch," "He's on a break." I left messages and called again and again - but Julio never returned my call and was never in his office. I spoke to other people who said "This isn't right" and they were going to try to help me - in the end I got a letter saying they had stopped a payment on a check from earlier in the year - which I called and said was not necessary (but they did it anyway). That is the ONLY communication I have gotten from Provident. I did call and spoke with a few women who took my call - one said "You need to get that money back!" Both women were very considerate and horrified by what I reported - but then NOTHING happened. Obviously they are not concerned with me. I admit I do not have a lot of money in their bank - so I have little power. But I DO know a lot of people with a lot of money who are banking at Provident because of me. I am letting them know how I was treated and they are not going to stay with Provident because of this. I don't like this one bit - it is a huge hassle to close my account and start over somewhere else. But I don't like the way I have been treated. The tellers are all very efficient and friendly. But management does not treat me like I'm worth anything. That $1,200 was a lot of money to me. So I'll be leaving Provident on Monday. If your money is important to you, you might want to think twice about banking here. These are difficult times and I prefer to deal with people who actually care. (I worked in a bank for five years as a vault/note teller, so I'm not asking for anything unreasonable.). Also, I am looking for a new car - and I will NOT let these people handle a car loan. They messed up everything lately. read more

Update: the folks at this branch reached out to me to address my concerns, which I appreciated. The branch staff were very friendly and responsive. The issues that were in their power to fix they did. Some of the Provident-wide system issues (e.g. changes making it more difficult to report problem charges) were out of their hands, but they did pass on my concerns to the appropriate people. I am grateful to the folks in this branch, while still having reservations about some of the larger shifts within how Provident handles certain functions. read more

I had high hopes when I first joined this credit union, but as time wore on I have found that the service is just as poor as the credit union I used to bank with. The person who signed me up with a new account was very pleasant. However, my interactions by phone with customer service and with the branch have been less than stellar. Different people gave me different information about the same, specific topic. Today, after 15 minutes on hold with the branch, I hung up and called again. I was informed that the branch was short-staffed and very busy. Someone could have told me that on my first call. I would have happily called back at a more convenient time for them. I do not feel like a valued customer at all from the way I've been treated. read more

Their one ATM never works. The door is locked or it won't dispense cash. If you go inside with a credit union debit card they won't give you cash. Hardly a "community credit union" or anything like the spirit of what a local credit union should be. read more

Everyone was pleasant and friendly. This is a new location, and everything is new & clean. The security entrance makes me feel safer going to this branch. The only downfall is the Parking is always tight and scarce in this plaza. read more

The folks over at this branch of the Provident Credit Union gave me and my wife exceptional service. Even though we arrived late in the day, they all stayed past closing to assist us in setting up multiple new accounts for ourselves, set up an account for our newborn daughter, and made sure all of our questions were answered and needs were met. They give you the runaround to release fund holds from vendors even with release codes from the vendor. This has caused numerous overdraft fees which they refuse to reverse even though the vendor indicated they released the hold on funds days ago. Unfriendly and unhelpful. read more

Sparkling clean, so excited to have this Oakland branch open after over a year of needing to drive to Alameda as the next closest option. I love Alameda, but would prefer not to drive there for banking purposes :-) Today's experience, play by play. -Plenty of parking. -Went in to make a withdrawal...easy. -Asked convoluted questions about our accounts...expertly answered. -Tempted to stay longer to get nearby (across the lot) bagels at Noahs, coffee at Peets, chix sandwiches from Bakesale Betty's, but resisted that temptation for now...
