Dr. Jose Cardenas has been seeing my children since they were babies. I remember him tickling my son's tummy when he was a baby and now my son towers over him by about 6 inches. He's been there to administer the unwanted shots to my little girl and alleviate her digestive issues. He is always forthright and informative when it comes to diagnosis and treatment of all of the ailments, scrapes and bruises that come with childhood. For those of you new to the game of child rearing, it is normal to over exaggerate every little fever and sniffle that comes along so it is good to have a sound pediatrician who will put you at ease when you need it. We came across him purely by word of mouth and reputation so now as my children are grown I pass this information on to you. Dr. Cardenas is a pediatrician that you will keep for as long as your children are still children. read more

My son had a lot of medical issues when he was first born and I quickly learned that the older, more experienced doctors were worth their weight in gold. I moved to the area about a year ago but wanted to hang onto my pediatrician in Austin because he has been a wonderful sound doctor since my son was in the NICU. With all this in mind, I was worried about the day illness would strike and I would need someone local. My son got sick with a high fever and I needed to take him in a few months ago. I didn't know where to go on short notice so I decided to turn to yelp. Yelp has yet to let me down!! Dr. Cardenas was exactly what I was looking for. He has a dry sense of humor and connects well with the kids. He's been around for awhile so knows what to look for with straight forward testing. Two quick tests and we knew what was wrong. A quick trip to the pharmacy and we were on the mend in a day. I know he was booked that day but he took his time with us and never seemed in a rush which I really appreciate. I also appreciate that they were able to squeeze us in that day. A month later, back with our Austin doctor, I mentioned Dr. Cardenas and my dr knew him and his partner who he had nothing but good things to say about them both. I will be back to Dr. Cardenas if needed! The only criticism I have is that their office is a little outdated and needs a remodel or new location perhaps. But nothing that really matters that much. read more

Love, love, love, this office and staff. We have seen Dr. Ruenes for over 9 years for our two boys and have nothing but praise for Dr. Ruenes, Rosie his nurse and all of their staff. Dr. Ruenes is innovative and cares extremely for his patients. My boys love him and Rosie. He is very thorough and writes down explicit directions and information. He spends quality time with the children and allows for any questions you may have. There is an occasional wait but it depends on time you go, e.g Mondays and after school hours. The office is very accommodating and they are opened on Saturdays. We have also seen Dr. Cardenas and Dr. Garza as needed and they and their staff are also good. Highly recommend Dr. Ruenes or any other Doctor at this office. read more

First off let me say they are very nice and I'm sure they're great with older kids. But their newborn advice is not up to date, and they do not go with the current recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. New moms: If you plan to breastfeed and keep your baby near you at night, this is not the pediatrician for you. He will tell you to schedule and space out your newborn baby's feedings, which can really hurt your milk supply. After a month he will suggest you put the baby into a separate room and let them cry for ten minutes before going to comfort them. They will tell you to start introducing rice cereal at two months. That is CRAZY and not the current medical recommendation. Research shows babies should be breastfed EXCLUSIVELY for six months or until they show signs of readiness for solids. Sleeping in the same room as your baby cuts their risk of SIDS in half. As for the crying, I go to a pediatrician for medical care, not parenting advice. read more

I normally do not take the time to write reviews but I feel obligated to warn other mothers. I was new to the area and thought since the doctors were older, they were experienced. This is not the case at all. I can only speak for Dr. Ruenes but the information I was given had both doctors names on it. First off, he does not believe in the "American Diet" as he was trained in Spain. Like a previous poster said, all of his information was very outdated. *Told to start solids at 7 weeks when AAP says exclusively breastfed until 6 months. *Never noticed my sons Torticollis which is a very common, treatable condition that has now caused additional problems due to not fully examining him at checkups. *NOT BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY! would not prescribe me vitamin d drops since he did not believe in them. Told me i need to space out my feedings to 4 hours! (Babies know when theyre hungry) *Was told to give my 7 week old OUNCES OF WATER to "hold him over". It is HIGHLY UNNECESSARY to give babies water and will cause water intoxication. I wish I knew of a way to report this doctor to get his medical licenses revoked. If i was not in the medical field myself, I would of just expected a doctor to be up to date, and took his advice without second guessing. Please do yourself a favor for your child and find a doctor who knows the current research and basic common sense when it comes to taking care of a child!!!! read more

My child has been seeing Dr. Cardenas for many years. He is one of the best pediatric physicians we have encountered. He is extremely knowledgeable and truly cares for his patients. He is very thorough and will do everything that is needed to make sure your child is fine. If he is concern about about a specific diagnosis, he will expedite testing and he will personally call you immediately with the results. Have never known any physician to do this so promptly. He has wonderful bedside manner and quite humorous. I wish he would see adults! He has had the same staff members for as long as I've been seeing them, that should tell you something about his office. Your children will be in good hands! read more

We love Dr. Ruenes! I have been bringing my six children to him for 22 years! I like h because he is thorough. He runs the diagnostic tests to get answers, writes you a list of not only the medicines you can take, but other remedies like rinsing with saline and changing diet. The staff is always kind and competent. They always do their best to fit you in and get your child seen. read more
