I've been here a few times and have always been treated a little coldly by Christa Fleming. I wasn't sure if she was having a few off days but I decided to give her benefit of the doubt. I've been back since and had an experience that made me feel awful. The receptionist and nurse are both super caring and sweet, but Christa was not. She didn't seem to care at all about me and rolled her eyes when I tried to explain my health. I was treated as a huge inconvenience. I have used this practice for emergency care - - once when it was still The Family Doctor and again this past weekend following a fall where I injured my chin and a finger. I was surprised by the poor reviews - - perhaps the practice has taken the suggestions/criticism to heart because I had a very professional, caring and thorough evaluation. The aid who took my vital signs was caring incompetent. The PA who evaluated me knew what she was doing. I didn't call ahead and was prepared to wait (it was early-ish on a Saturday morning), but the wait time was very reasonable. My primary care facility is not open on weekends or evenings. I am satisfied with them, but if I were not I would certainly switch to this practice. read more

I was in town visiting my college student and wanted her to been seen for her cough. Med First was able to see her quickly. The staff was friendly. After her vitals were checked, the PA diagnosed her with bronchitis. Prescriptions were sent over the pharmacy. I left town knowing my daughter would be recovering soon! I recommend this practice. I hope my daughter doesn't need to return, but if she does need a physician in the area, I would send her to Med First. read more

Came for Covid testing. It is raining and service is curbside but I was asked to get out of my car and come into the building. The nurse said that she did not want to get out because it was raining and get wet so made me come in !!!! Worst of all, the employees blocked the entrance woth their cars so I had to get out of my car, walk to the door and get wet when the test should have been made with me inside the car. read more

I booked an appointment online and the time available was for 3:20 pm so I show up 10 mins early. They ask if I had an appointment. So there I sat for almost an hour to find out that the person I supposed to be seeing she is also doing drive up Covid testing. Mind you I am a patient of hers as well. I was furious upon leaving. I had to reschedule my appointment. This was a huge inconvenience for me and nobody seemed to care what so ever. But they managed to have the lab with two people on and they were just sitting on their phones. I will definitely be looking for other care. Had an appointment. Got in a room 45 minutes later..Waited another 20 minutes. Friendly staff..my biggest complaint is that the nurse and the doctor both went on the computer in the examination room and did not look at me the entire time I was talking...Doctor efficient but very brusque and again, no eye contact. I didn't find my first experience as dissatisfying as most people are saying. I was in and out within an hour without an appointment. That's pretty good in my book. It's not as fast as going to FastMed but they can also treat a little more than FastMed since they are also primary care providers. It doesn't bother me to be seen by an NP or PA. People who do not work within the healthcare field do not understand that NPs and PAs are a perfectly reasonable choice for internal medicine/urgent care. They also still have to work under an MD. Whatever they do reflects on the overseeing MD. I didn't experience any grumpy staff either. They were all friendly, understanding and accommodating (best they could). It's a little dated inside and the lighting can be a little less depressing but that's very minor. I'm not going there for esthetics anyway. read more

I had been a patient since 1986, and was always satisfied. Short wait time, etc. Doctor Withrow was nice and competent. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, Withrow had sold the practice to MedFirst. I walked in without an appointment, it IS a walk in practice, and nobody was there at the desk. I was there for a full seven minutes before I saw a human being, and she was not at all apologetic about the wait. She took my insurance card and told me to have a seat. I was the only patient there the whole time, except for whomever was waiting to be seen in the exam rooms. After waiting for forty five minutes (no more short wait time) she called my name, and told me that they don't accept the insurance I tried to use. No apologies. I left, and will never go back. Walked in here the day before my wedding to treat an allergic reaction to the stupid fake eyelashes I put on (imagine red raccoon eyes!). They were very sympathetic and went for a more aggressive treatment option because they knew I had to have it cleared up by the next day. Overall the PA and the Nursing Staff were very nice and knowledgable. The wait seemed to be a little long (30 minutes) for what seemed like a sleepy morning. read more

I scheduled an appointment to meet with a doctor, not a PA, and was told I could walk in and see him. I needed a blood pressure reassessment that had to be signed by and MD, not a PA, in order to be cleared for military training. When I arrived they promptly told me the doctor was on vacation and there were no other MDs available there to see me. Very unprofessional when I was specific and clear on the phone that it had to be an MD. I left and went to Duke Urgent care who explained to me that they always have MDs on site. Duke Urgent care is my new go to for appointments. I will not be returning to NC Family Doctor. read more

I've been to this practice a few times in the past and always had a good experience. I went about a month ago and it's like a different place. Never saw a real doctor, was billed as a new patient (because it had been 3 years since last visit), PA didn't really listen, tried to schedule tests that I didn't want. Then billed over $400.00! When I moved to Chapel Hill just a little over two years ago, despite researching the area before moving, I felt disoriented on where to go to find the necessities. Almost immediately after settling in, I got the flu, and I remembered that I saw The Family Doctor, a general medical practice, in Rams Plaza. As my common flu turned into pneumonia I decided to go there. In the three occasions that I went there for three different illnesses, I was never given access to the doctor. I was always given the run around that the MD was booked solidly and that I had to make an appointment well in advance. That's great for yearly check-ups, but it's not helpful when you have a serious problem because an illness does not make an appointment with you. It just happens. I understand that there is a shortage of doctors; however, I feel that pneumonia is a serious condition worthy of a doctor's attention. Not so here. I have been to other medical practices like this, and whenever it was a serious ailment the doctor would fit me. Like what Dov C. states, this facility is mostly run by Physicians Assistants and it is fine to go to The Family Care practice if you have a common cold or something non-threating. If you are a walk-in regardless of your condition, you will get a PA instead of MD. This is the reason why I give it three stars. read more

I can't remember receiving such indifferent care anywhere I have ever lived or even travelled. I cut my finger and wound up needing three stitches. I was seen by a PA not a doctor. She did not wear a mask when treating me, the only medical person I have seen in the last 6 months who was unmasked, She seemed as if she had never seen a small cut before and eventually told me to go to the emergency room. I did and was treated by a resident quickly and easily. When I got the bill from Medfirst they had not included my Medicare information so the bill was incorrect. It's amazing I was billed at all since they did nothing for me. It took three days to get someone on the phone either at the clinic or at the corporate office. I finally emailed a director of operations. After three days I finally got someone to answer the phone at the clinic. She helped me and gave me her personal email so I could once again give them my Medicare info. She said her clinic email did not work. The incompetence at Medfirst seems widespread, Their communication with clients is horrid. Medfirst says they are patient centered. I did not see that in anything they did. read more

I have been a patient of this practice for over five years and feel that I have to defend it. I was first brought to the practice by my roommate who had used their services before. As someone comfortable operating as my own medical advocate and knowledgeable about the terminology, symptoms, and treatments, I have never had a bad experience. I have brought them asymptomatic and mostly-antibiotic-resistant (of my own making; a laboratory experiment gone wrong) strep throat, a sinus infection that presented as meningitis, and many other weird illnesses that had been incorrectly diagnosed at other venues. I always felt that I was in good hands at The NC Family Doctor because no matter what degree my medical provider had, what they had that counted was enough experience to actually get the diagnosis correct! To me, that is what matters. It also matters that they listened and didn't argue when I mentioned that the initially prescribed (and correctly, too, for most cases of strep) antibiotics weren't going to work and I needed a different kind. They asked clarifying questions ("How did I know? What was my motivation for requesting the different antibiotic?") rather than dismissing my concern out of hand as so many other doctors did to all the other members of my lab who also came down with the same strain of strep. I remain a loyal patient. However, I know what I am getting myself in to and others might not. It is a teaching environment. I have had nurses-in-training administer PPD tests - with my full knowledge and consent - and as students are wont to do, they missed their target with the needle a few times. I enjoyed having the supervisor use my arm as a teaching opportunity to explain the depth needed based on my subcutaneous fat. I learned something, too! When I went to them after being in an auto accident, there was a rad-tech-in-training and once again I agreed to allow her to work on me. Again, she made a few errors that resulted in a small amount of pain. If I was a person who took less responsibility for my choices, I might blame the practice for the minor discomfort, but I elected to be the guinea pig and I knew and own all that comes with it. It is not The NC Family Doctor's fault; in fact, I commend them for providing a learning opportunity. I also understand that they have a first-come-first-served model for urgent care. I have brought many friends there who don't have PCPs and sat with them in the waiting room, listening to CNN Health News on loop for hours, until I thought my brain was going to explode if I heard the same sound bites just one more time. I understand that waiting is frustrating. But at the same time, the illness didn't schedule itself in advance, so this is how it works. I've waited just as long in other doctor's offices when I DID have an appointment because they were "running behind". All in all, I'm satisfied, which is why I am still a patient. NB: I, too, have experienced troubles with the switching of systems and incorrect entry of my data. At present, my social security number is incorrectly entered in their system, and have had to go a few rounds with tech support over the current system for distributing test results claiming my account doesn't exist (turns out you can not log in from a mobile/smart phone browser). Those are legitimate complaints, but at the same time, office administration doesn't have anything to do with correct diagnoses. read more

I have always received excellent care by sensitive, and well-qualified staff.One of the best things about this group of caregivers is that they really take the time to get to know you and understand your concerns. This place has gone massively downhill over the past year. I was there for 1.5 hours (WITH an appointment) and saw someone for less than 5 minutes. She didn't listen to me, just sent me off for blood tests and then they shoved me out the door. I'd been waiting ages for my physical because I've been having horrible symptoms and not one person took me seriously. Complete waste of money and now I have to go to a specialist instead. read more

1 star is too much, there should be a no star option for places like this. I went here on a Saturday because I was sick, and being new to the area did not have an established doctor. After checking in, I waited in the lobby for 45 minutes. After finally being called back, I was ushered into a room where I was left alone for 55 minutes with the door closed without being checked on. I threw up once in that time, and really needed some water but didn't complain when they at last came in to provide medical care. Before the doctor even heard all of my symptoms, she prescribed me antibiotics and steroids telling me that would take care of about anything. I mentioned twice during our conversation I was taking Goody's for pain relief while I was sick. The doctor didn't warn me about mixing NSAIDs and Steroids, and I spent a consequential 24 hours in writhing pain from the bad drug interaction. When I called them on Monday morning for advice on if I should go to the ER as I may be bleeding internally, they told me to get up there and they would help me out. Once I arrived, I was greeted with indifference and after waiting 25 minutes in the lobby, I left because I couldn't believe that when I had come in for a drug interaction caused by their doctor's oversight, they weren't seeing me right away. Before leaving I told them I thought it was ridiculous that I wasn't being seen right away when I was potentially bleeding internally from their doctor's oversight, and the receptionist and nurses in the room only said if I'd sit down I'd be seen next. (I was the only person there, I might add) Having a dad with chronic illness my entire life has taken me through a lot of medical facilities and experiences. I have never seen such a poor excuse for a medical office, so careless, so indifferent. Go anywhere before you go here, I ended up far worse off than I would have been otherwise. Update: Yesterday I was admitted to UNC systems (aka real doctors) and had to be treated for an upper GI bleed. What should have been 10 dollars in medical expenses has now become hundreds. Absolutely never go anywhere near this sham of a medical facility. read more

The medical care here is good, but we've had some unprofessional ish here. My husband came in with an injured hip and needed an X-ray. The girls did not position him right and got shots of his femur with no hip joint. So like basic anatomy and radiology ish going wrong. I could hear them talking about him in the hallway, talking about how he was in pain, etc. which was disgusting if not a violation of HIPAA laws. The PA made them redo the X-ray and explained to them how to get his actual hip in the shot. SMH. Another time I came in with a script for a blood draw and the girl (RN? NA? Intern?) asked me, "Where did this come from?" I told her the Rx came from my doctor, and I pointed out the name and address were at top of script. She looked at it again, "Oh..." like she ain't never seen a Rx before. WTF! Are they are hiring HS students? However I think the PAs have their heads screwed on right, they would watch out for my overdue lady-health needs and helped us immensely when my husband had a horrible case of poison ivy. Basically TFD just... clean up your ladies in waiting and get some real professional chicks in there! We try not to go here anymore because of the ish. read more

This is a run of the mill Urgent Care facility, staffed primarily by Physicians Assistants. I used their services twice over one weekend and won't go back. My first experience was fine. The review seemed competent, asked good questions, explained his thoughts & diagnosis. He told me I should see results in 24 hours. The next day, when the symptoms were worse, I went back. After waiting 2 hours (OK, it was a sunday afternoon) the nurse then told me that I came back too soon, that the anti-biotics should take 3 days to work, and that I shouldn't bother to see the PA. I said, no, it's worse now than it was yesterday and I've waited 2 hours so I'll see the PA. Then the PA walks into the room, takes one look at me and says I have to go to the Emergency Room! So within 2 minutes I had once nurse telling me to go home, and one PA telling me to go to the ER. (I did go to the ER, spent 24 hours and 10x the co-pay, but I got several good opinions from MDs). If you have a cold this may be an OK place, but I didn't feel comfortable with the inconsistency of care or the overall quality of the staff. read more

Date seen: 6/23/16 As I was experiencing bad GI symptoms, I went to The Family Doctor for help. After I gave them a sample, I heard a cluster of "medical assistants" gasping, laughing, & making fun of me and my situation. After hearing their derogatory comments through the paper thin door and walls, I was immediately brought to tears. I have been in healthcare for 13 years and I put my patients first. I couldn't stop thinking about how I am my patient's advocate at all times. One may be obese, have HIV/chlamydia/aids...you name it...I do not judge- i just do my job and bear in mind they are human. Being on the other side (as a patient and not a provider), I was vulnerable and felt ABSOLUTELY HUMILIATED. No one deserves this type of treatment; Everyone deserves respect and compassion. They permanently lost me as a patient. Despite, their loss...I'm still feeling violated and just in awe at the whole experience. I hope I was their first (doubt it) and their last patient they ever humiliate. On a side note, their secretary was anything but welcoming, no one ever answers their phones, and they are incredibly slow. Please DO NOT GO HERE...unless you want to hear what they REALLY have to say about you behind closed (and thin) doors. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Went in and was seen after an hour wait. Was told if Symptoms persist call in 7-10 days. I did just that. Called on a Thursday 3 times and Friday twice. Spoke to the nurse on Thursday and was told they would call me first thing Friday morning. Finally got a call back at 4:30 Friday. I told them I was going out of town on all 5 calls. I am told you need to come back in. This would have been possible if I was told this on any of the previous five calls, but won't be back until Tuesday. I'm actually really surprised to see so many bad reviews. I've always seen Katrina Williams and I love her. She asks about how I've been and my family and was the first doctor to agree to treat my thyroid disease when no one else would. And she sent me to another doc for my thyroid when I was still exhausted and she couldn't help me. I've always felt like she really cared. When i moved and switched PCPs and didnt see her for over a year, when I did see her she was so wonderful... Wanted to know how i was, how everything was goung health wise, how my family was... Its always wonderful to see her. Also wonderful to have someone for weekend and walk in care that you know and don't cost ER or urgent care prices. read more

Horrible experience. The only pleasant part about my visit was the friendly front desk staff. I had an 11:00am appointment and was done at 1:40. During that 2 hours and 40 minutes, I saw the doctor for about 5 minutes. At one point, I went out into the hallway to inquire about the delay and the nurse told me he was finishing up with a patient and I was next. 45 minutes later, the doctor came in. On top of all that, the doctor prescribed me a medication that my pharmacist told me that most pharmacies don't carry and it would take several days to order. I will not be back and I would not recommend this office. Since they were purchased by another company, their service has suffered tremendously. read more

Recently I took myself to The Family Doctor because I was short of breath from just walking to my car or doing little things like taking a shower. The staff a TFD saw me immediately, checked my oxygen levels, found them lacking, took x-rays, blood, EKG, and ran usual in-office tests, but to no avail. Suspecting more of a problem because of my oxygen levels Betty Haswell at TFD sent me straight to the ER at UNC Memorial, where pulmonary emboli were discovered by a CT scan; I was admitted immediately. During my hospital "holiday" my PCP, Dr. Glen Withrow from The Family Doctor, maintained contact with my hospital doctors about my care. This sharing of medical information made me feel more assured that every effort being made for me was a team decision and not fragmented treatment by doctors I didn't know. I realized how important is it for those taking care of me to be in contact with each other as my medical family, be in agreement about my treatments, and be aware of all that's being done so nothing is left to chance. I want to know that all my doctors and nurses, whether on the hospital floor or back at the doctor's office, are working together as my advocates. I came out of the hospital feeling that my medical team in and out of the hospital did a great job to get me healthy; it's re-assuring to know that The Family Doctor had me under its wing the entire time! read more

Avoid this place at all costs! Don't waste your time or risk your privacy being compromised. Incompetent and unprofessional staff, at least on the weekends. Waited for close to an hour for the so called "doctor" to finally see me and that was only after I got up to "use the bathroom" in an attempt to remind them I was still waiting. The worst part was that there wasn't any other patient in the building, which made the long wait peculiar. Upon being "greeted" (more liked stalked) by 2 women outside the bathroom door, one followed me back to my room with minimal interaction. I'm not even sure if she introduced herself. No name tag or anything. After finally realizing she was supposed to be the "doctor" and going through the absolute worst patient interview, I was prescribed medicine that was weaker than the medicine I told them I had already been taking. By the time we were done with the consultation, I felt worse about my situation. I felt that the staff didn't take me seriously and that there was something peculiar about the entire setup. My thoughts were solidified when I went to have the prescription filled. My pharmacist literally couldn't read the letters that this so called doctor wrote. It was terribly illegible. Everything up to the doctor's name was hard if not impossible to make out. I ended up having to wait almost two days for the pharmacist to track down some kind of doctor (a completely different one) to try to make sense of the prescription. When we tried calling them initially they told us the "doctor" I saw wasn't working on Monday and that they didn't have a contact number for her outside of the office! What kind of doctor can't be contacted outside of the office. What if I were to overdose on the prescription she prescribed and the emergency room needed to soak to her? I digress. We finally got a new person on the phone who claimed to be the doctor on duty and even after describing the prescription to him, he even admitted that it sounded false. He reauthorized an even weaker amount of pain killers over the phone and I had those filled although I could've gotten the exact same thing over the counter without the hassle or the insurance bill. Long story short, I'm not even sure if I was seen by a real, licensed physician/PA. I feel like my privacy and my dignity was compromised and I'd absolutely never suggest "The family doctor" to anyone with sincere medical concerns. There's differently something fishy going on here. Possibly fake or unauthorized medical professionals. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR ENERGY PATRONIZING THIS PLACE! read more

This is an OK walk in clinic that I don't have to pay an Urgent Care copay. One Sunday I cut myself on a rusty dumpster. It was a small cut but I wanted a tetanus shot. I was in and out in an hour with the shot and a prescription for an antibiotic cream. The Nurses were nice but the PA was in and out quickly. This is a place for when your doctor office is closed and you don't need to go to an Urgent Care facility or the ER. read more

I have been a patient at The Family Doctor for about 3 months. My first appointment I had to schedule about 3 weeks in advance and I have been back 3 times since. (once for a second scheduled appointment and twice for walk-in appointments) Both of my scheduled appointments have gone amazingly well! My doctor is well educated, to the point, has a wonderful disposition and is very eloquent when she is speaking about a diagnosis. I appreciate her ability to be straight forward and compassionate about my health at the same time. She is always very receptive and genuine and never makes me feel like I am "just a number". Every time I have gone in I have never had to wait in the waiting room for more than 15 minutes! I had to be treated for a broken toe earlier this week and went in as a walk-in patient. After arriving, I spent a maximum of 10 minutes in the waiting room and from then on everything went very smoothly. The nurse was kind, respectful and helpful. She even demonstrated how to walk on crutches correctly! Also, they have a lab right in the office so if you are having any blood work or cultures done you get your results back by the next day! It was very difficult for me to find a healthcare provider in the area when I moved here from New England about a year ago because few accept my health insurance, so it was a huge relief for me that The Family Doctor was able to take my insurance. (especially being a student in my mid-twenties) My latest appointment I was able to be seen promptly, get a physical exam, have x-rays, receive crutches, a velcro cast and a prescription all in under an hour for a 20 dollar copay! My only negative observation would be the actual atmosphere. I don't think the building has been remodeled since the 70's, so it has sort of a dingy appearance. The exam rooms are a little small, and the equipment is rather old, but honestly I imagine it probably frustrates the staff more than I am bothered with it. All in all I am very pleased with my experiences I have had at The Family Doctor ! Maybe I am just lucky but I am certainly glad I did not read the other reviews on here before I made my initial appointment with them! read more

I had gone to the Family Doctor off and on over the years -- mostly in urgent care situations -- before settling on them as my primary. I actually changed FROM a Duke practice that failed to recognize I had pneumonia rather than "the crud" as he said that would just go away. I had been to my Duke practice a few days before, and, although I was clearly wheezing, no one bothered with an x-ray. Betty Haswell at the Family Doctor notice right away that my symptoms were severe. I came in right before the office closed but they stayed with me well after hours doing x-rays and taking care of me before sending me over to the ED at UNC Hospital. I ended up being admitted to the hospital. I credit Betty and the Family Doctor as saving my life and fired my Duke practitioner right after I got out of the hospital. The Family Doctor is where I go now. All of the providers there are great. I find them to be knowledgable, attentive and easy to talk with. I don't understand all of the fuss about not seeing an MD every time you go. Honestly, I have gotten better service from the PAs than most of the MDs I have seen in my life. I find the PAs much more down-to-earth than the MDs, willing to spend more time with you and answer your questions and, quite honestly, more "on the mark" than the MDs when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Withrow is great, but I feel just as confident to see any of the PAs at the Family Doctor. I always leave feeling like I was listened to, had plenty of time to talk to the provider and have a solid understanding of my medical issue and what I need to do. Every practice can make some improvements, but the level of negativity I see here is propesterous. (I admit I wondered if this weren't a conspiracy of Duke MDs posting as "patients".) I highly recommend you give the Family Doctor a try for yourself before making a judgment. I feel pretty confident you will go back. read more

I can't say enough good things about this practice. Dr. Withrow has changed my life in terms of finally at age 53 finding someone I can freely talk to about medical issues. He does this from a walk in urgent care platform, which is incredible. I have been using his services now for over five years. What other doctor do you know that is available on Sundays and Saturdays and daily without an appointment? The critical reviews I see here are simply unfair. One person complains they had to wait 30 minutes? Before I came to this practice, I would have to wait over 30 minutes every time I went to see a doctor even with an appointment. omg... i love this place. i have gotten superior care every time i have gone here. katrina and betty are my favs but i have had no poor interactions with any of the docs. the nurses and front desk folks are spot on too. katrina and betty are pa's and honestly i prefer a pa over a dr-- they seem to really listen and work with me. i come over from raleigh to get my care here. katrina is a great doc. i had a female issue for 5 yrs and saw 7 docs (gyno, dermo, general docs) and no one knew what my issues was. when katrina eye-balled the situation she diagnosed it right there and referred me to a local dermo (dr becker- also fab) who has helped me with this issue. i cannot say enough great things about this place. read more

DO NOT ENTRUST THIS PLACE WITH YOUR HEALTH!!! Dr. Withrow is nice but hardly ever there & the rest of the staff are the most unprofessional I've ever seen in Healthcare. They "forgot" to send my bloodwork to the lab after a heart episode & never even bothered notifying me. I called to inquire but they couldn't find it so I wasn't told until I went in for something else they never even sent it out so the blood went bad. That day they did a follow up chest X-ray the PA informed me was abnormal & a mass on my left lung appeared to have grown much larger since my last X-ray & could be cancer or something else very serious. I was obviously very shaken up till she called later that day to say she misread the X-ray & the radiologist said it was perfectly normal. If I hadn't been so relieved I would have been extremely upset & since then felt the need to warn others to go elsewhere if you have anything more than a simple cold. The PA was nice but reaching far beyond her knowledge to share such terrifying & thankfully incorrect info with a patient. While waiting in the exam room with the door partially open I overheard another staff complaining to a coworker about her "f--king hours" - never heard anything so unprofessional at a medical facility & it felt like being behind the counter at Burger King rather than a doctor's office. I've heard Dr. Withrow was great in his prime but it seems he's winding down to retirement & has left his practice to others who have no business running it. There are so many other urgent cares in the area, I will never return here even though it is the most convenient since very close to my home. read more
