I've been here before, and every time it's a bit different. This time, I made an appointment ahead of time and was told I could check in thru the app. Of course, then a person has to find you in the system and verify all the checking information I already entered. But I barely sat down before a very gruff nurse called me back and took my vitals. She looked askance when I said I thought I had gout, because I've not had it before. "We'll see." After hearing more, however, she started to think maybe I knew more than she first surmised. She finished the vitals and said, "Follow me!" and walked quickly down a hallway. Gout makes walking difficult, and I called to her to not get out of sight when she turned a corner. Fortunately, the room was just around the corner. She waited impatiently while I limped into the room, then walked away. Soon, another nurse came in and took a few more readings, and said the doctor would be in shortly. In maybe three minutes, a nice gentleman entered, asked about three pointed questions and ascertained that this was probably gout. He had me remove my shoe and sock and poked a bit and then ordered some bloodwork. The second phlebotomist was able to hit a vein on the first try, rather than the four failed attempts at two sites from the first one. Bloodwork done, the doctor returned to recommend seeing my Primary Care Physician, but did call in some meds. Got the message that they were ready on my watch before he left the room. I think everyone there cared about my health, but it's a busy place, and they probably get a lot of folks who are wimpy or just trying to score some pain meds. I've never been upset by any of the care I have gotten here, and it's good to know they are around when you cannot get in to see your main caregiver. read more

I took my son to Urgent Care today. Dr. Joseph Benjamin, DO, saw us very quickly, within two minutes. The visit felt rushed and unhelpful. My son has been dealing with a persistent cough and allergy issues, and I explained that his chest hurts when he coughs and that his inhaler hasn't been helping. The doctor only listened to his back and then told me to let it run its course. I left feeling like my concerns weren't fully addressed and that my son didn't receive the thorough evaluation he needed. read more

The clinic said on their door that 2 parents are allowed to accompany the child. However the person at the registration kept reminding that only one is allowed and said the clinic changed the rule in Feb but failed to update the notice (for 2 months) and she has to verbally remind everyone. Otherwise the nurse seems to be nice and they are able to get people in quickly. read more

I took my daughter here with a 102 fever and severe neck, back and stomach pain. They did not do a flu or Covid test. The provider also refused to do blood work because it was 'just a virus'. After several more days of high fever we went to a different urgent care who tested her urine and blood. She had a severe kidney infection. The severity of this could have been prevented. These providers were dismissive and negligent. Don't go here!!! read more

I've heard from my physician friend that it's taboo to rate the field of Medicine because physicians can't defend themselves due to Hipaa policies and privacy regulations but I'm not here to complain, I'm here to praise! I love Duke Urgent Care, especially this location. I've been several times on my own and one time to care for an injured friend. Each and every time, they have delivered exceptional service and treat you with the utmost respect and compassion. Yes there is a wait but it's nothing like the emergency room. They also have screens now that show you the estimated wait times to help you see how many folks are ahead of you. This feature helps ease everyone's anxiety. I visited this location recently and within no time, after several tests, they were able to diagnosis my issue with a deficiency. So thankful for the staff here, particularly Dr. Hart. He was extremely patient and knowledgeable. He answered our dozens of questions and we never ever felt rushed. I was amazed at how he took the time to explain how the body works and the mechanics of why I was feeling the way I did. Walking away from this place, I felt confident in knowing what my issues were, and knowing exactly how to combat myself back to health. This is priceless. I also love the extended hours offered here. It keeps me at ease knowing that care - exceptional care, is so close to home and accessible. Keep up the great work, Duke! read more

They are awesome. I have seen them twice now for unrelated injuries and have been impressed each time. I was seen promptly, treated with care and respect by ALL staff, and given thorough care and treatment information. Dr. Joseph Benjamin has incredibly kind bedside manner and has effectively treated me, or, "fixed me up" from heat exhaustion to an ankle sprain. COVID-19 precautions seem solid and staff remains friendly when busy. Will always come here. read more

I visited this urgent care on March 12, 2019 and, while the provider who saw me was compassionate and thorough, this urgent care's billing practices are deceptive. The copay of $72 is supposed to cover any labs or other tests done in-house, but they billed the x-ray that I had down the hall as a separate outpatient procedure. Duke is known for his frivolous billing add-ons, like their ridiculous 'facilities fee,' so this is just one more instance of Duke bilking the patient any way they can. Nice location with ample parking, people working at reception were all very nice, as well as the technician who took my vitals and Kimberly, a NP. I came in to get an infected blister looked at; turns out I had a foreign body in there, and got a Tdap covered by my insurance - yay vaccines! I highly recommend making an appointment online (through their website) if you're able. I scheduled a weekday mid-morning appointment earlier that same morning from home, and was seen right on time. They get a 2 because 3 says A-ok, and 2 is meh, I've seen better. I feel that they covered half the bases. We went in for my son's sprained ankle, to see if we needed an X-ray, and to get one if needed. It was a Monday, around 1:30 pm. I was allowing about an hour and a half for the entire thing. We left at 3:30 without an X-ray, and after some rude treatment from a doctor. The man at reception was helpful, and went the extra mile to get out insurance info updated. The waiting room was about half full, and we waited about 20 minutes to be called. About what I'd expect from an Urgent Care. The intake nurse was friendly and warm, and efficient. We were with her for about 5-10 minutes, and then she put us in a room. We waited 30-40 minutes in the room, with the door closed. I opened the door so that maybe the staff would feel more compelled to wait on us if they could see us. In another 10 minutes. A Dr Strayhorn came by to close the door and inform us that the door needed to stay closed for "patient confidentiality". I replied that we didn't need confidentiality and we liked the air, and by the way, when would we be seen? In a few minutes, she said, as she closed the door in my face. This doctor was quite prickly and rude, with not a trace of a smile and very minimal people skills. In another 5 minutes, a friendly doctor came in an looked at my son's ankle and advised an X-ray. He was in the room for about 5 minutes. We waited in the room for the X-ray for another 15-20 minutes, then decided to get up and leave. From what I saw in the waiting room, there were no other injuries, just illness. So why wait 2 hours for an X-ray? We have used this facility multiple times over a period of 10 years for sports injuries and sicknesses with both of my kids. We understand and expect an hour to hour and a half for this type of facility. We have had really nice and helpful staff for the most part, with prickly ones mixed in. Fortunately, it's no longer the only game in town, and we will try Fast Med if we have future urgent care needs. We did my son's last sports physical there and they did live up to their name. We were in and out in 30-40 minutes. read more

Although hilarious, I will spare you the saga by which we ended up here on our only vacation of the year no less. Long story short my boyfriend is allergic to bees and wasps and the poor guy stuck his hand in a wasp nest while playing horseshoes. After we ran around like lunatics swatting them away (which by the way your not supposed to do) we escaped in to the house to assess the damages. By this point I had been stung also, but I was more concerned by the boyfriends hulk hand, indeed it had already started to swell grotesquely. I stuffed some benadryl in his mouth (his epi pen had expired of course) and applied a home remedy of baking soda and vinegar paste. Then we applied ice and waited to see what we should do next, within 20 minutes he was in a lot of pain and he was starting to lose feeling in his fingers. So our friends took us down the road to Duke Urgent Care. It's sort of discouraging when you arrive to see a white board stating "90 minutes" waiting time, but once the woman behind the front desk saw the enormity of my boyfriends hand she pretty much pushed him to the front of the line, he was called back in 10 minutes. I didn't go back with him, but he was back there about 90 minutes being observed and given steroids. Meanwhile I'm in the waiting room wondering what's taking so long, thinking the worst - that they were chopping his hand off. In the end it was a very good decision to go, the doctor said the swelling was cutting of circulation to his fingers. He was prescribed new epi-pens and was told to hold his beer in that hand in the evening (we were supposed to be at a wedding in two hours time). They offered him a chance to pay on the spot in full and it would be %50 off or he could be billed the full amount later. So he opted for paying on the spot and it was about $95. I can't promise that they'll bump you to the front of the line but I can tell you they don't mess around at this place. Thanks to the speedy service my boyfriend got to take a short nap and still make it to the wedding on time with hand still attached! read more

Great location, and we had great service but DO NOT accept simple medical devices from this location (or anywhere) unless you know how much you'll have to pay. We made that mistake. The medical device company this Urgent Care uses for ankle braces is price gouging (by my definition, which is over 100% markup compared to numerous other sources for an identical item). I'll explain why I'm rating 4 stars, then I'll give some advice regarding simple medical devices... Four stars because: There's ample parking, a fine place to wait, and a white board where they display the wait time. Overall I think it is a good place, and I would definitely go back there when needed. It's also less than 5 minutes from our house on a non-congested road, and saves a trip to the ER so those are both huge plusses. Medical devices: My wife sprained her ankle. When she was given what was essentially a futuristic ice pack, she asked how much the ice pack would be. The response was that they did not know. They offered no ballpark estimate or other further comment such as "it's likely going to be way more than you want to pay" (which surely they would know to be true). They just said they thought my wife's insurance would cover it. This was true but since our deductible wasn't yet met, we received a bill from the medical device company for $92. For an ice pack. How about just some good old fashioned medical advice, like "keep ice on it"?! Of course we are responsible in part since we did not foresee the dishonest pricing of the medical device company. But the fact that this Urgent Care works with a medical device company who is gouging people over simple medical devices is absurd. Check the BBB page for the company SME, Inc. USA out of Wilmington. They sell the $90 ice packs. God forbid people with shoestring budgets go in there and think they're getting an ice pack for a reasonable price. The reason I recommend not getting any simple medical devices here is because (a) there is a Walgreens next door, or failing that (b) there is a physical medical supply store almost directly east, on Guess Road, probably within 1 mile away !!! I'm still giving 4 stars because this is a good place, and it's got to be near impossible to find a place that *doesn't* conduct business exactly the same way - feigning complete ignorance of prices and letting the customer feel the pain later rather than direct them next door or across the street for the same item - so the moral of the story is don't accept any medical device unless absolutely necessary or if you are willing to pay the ridiculous price. Calling the medical device place on Monday... this should be fun...! read more

This location is consistently excellent in terms of speed, cleanliness, expertise of the front desk staff, and doctors. Though I've been coming to this location for years (they moved into a new building more recently), my experience with Dr. Bird compels me to write this review. Dr. Bird is the most attentive, helpful, and empathetic doctor I have ever been seen by. It's too bad he is only at the Hillandale Urgent Care Clinic; otherwise I would definitely opt to have him as my PCP. When I went in with a migraine, he offered an option that no doctor-- in all the times I've been to urgent care with migraines before--has ever told me about. He went above and beyond in taking the time to explain things to me that I didn't understand before, even as a lifetime migraineur. I feel like I just experienced a miracle! I traveled to Durham with my daughter on a college visit and, for the first time in 30 years, I forgot to pack my Uniphyl, which I take for asthma. My pharmacy in Philly could have worked a transfer with a pharmacy here, but Uniphyl (brand name of Theophylline) is not prescribed much anymore and the helpful lady at Walgreen's could not locate any at any of the several stores she called. So I made an online appointment at Duke Urgent Care. By the time I got there I had been off the med for almost 48 hours and I was starting to feel it. The staff was great, kept to the appointment time, and the doctor called around and found a drug store that carried it. the facility itself is immaculate and state of the art (which you would expect with the name Duke on it). I arive at the door at 8:02, 2 minutes after close, my hand dripping wet with blood and the person at the front simply says sorry we are closed, I am writing this review at 11:35 pm at the ER still waiting for treatment. I received care from Dr. Asiyah and because of the negative experience, I will never go back here. She showed no empathy for my situation and my care needs. She refused for me to see a manager to express my concerns, and caught an attitude when I challenged her judgment. As we all know medicine is not a straight line of diagnosis. It takes someone who actually wants to help you to find the cure. With her, I felt she just wanted to perform the standard test and if she couldn't find anything then she was done with the case. This almost gave me the feeling that she was seeing people all day and was not really trying to assist people with their needs. She did not explain my prescription to me, I had to wave down a very nice nurse to assist with the understanding of the medication. She was upset and immediately left the room and did not come back. I will never go here again and if you receive care from this doctor I would advise finding a different provider. Let me be clear the only reason why I gave this place two stars is because of the nurses and check-in people in the front. Those women were very nice and provided assistance when the doctor refused. read more

I live close to the facility therefore I have visited Duke Urgent Care Hillandale quite frequently through the decades. Usually my visits are pleasant ones (despite the circumstances) but this last experience on 08/20/2016 was an eye opener. Approximately 430pm I arrived at this Urgent Care to get my right foot and knee looked at. That day at 1230pm I had slipped and fallen while taking a shower . When I arrived two couples there. The person that checked me in appeared to have trouble locating me in the system and again checking me in. I had a seat in the waiting area. Within 15mins the couples already there were eventually were taken back for vitals and rooms. Several other couples came and then a patient came on oxygen in that was obviously having trouble breathing. The people at the desk appeared not be be concerned. I hobbled to the desk to sign the lady in with the breathing problem and the patient care assistant stated, "Oh, she can come on up now, I'm ready for her." I indicated that the lady was having difficult breathing and that I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and get her back so that the nurse could access the situation. Within a few moments that took the lady in distress back to been seen. All the while, several other people/couples came in, one was a gentleman with an earache. The trickle of patients began to taper off, all told about 8 groups of patients/families were taken back (even the gentleman with the earache). I am no stranger to how triage works and, in my opinion this is no form of triage. I, once again, hobbled to the front desk. "Excuse me", I stated, "Am I going to be seen? I am concerned that I may have broken something in my foot." "Oh, you haven't been taken back yet? Even for your vitals?" "No", I exclaimed, puzzled that not one of the two front desk people located five and ten feet from me could not notice that I was still sitting there. Five minutes later I was taken back for vitals and escorted to a room. On my way back I noticed about 5 people (Nursing assistants? Nurses? PA's?) mulling around the desk in the back. Curious. I had a small cut on my large toe that was cleaned and a band-aide on it placed on it. I was eventually taken back for radiological imagining. After 15-20 minutes the physician came in to see me. "Well I have some good news and bad news, which do you want first?" she stated. "The bad news", I replied. "The bad news is that you did fracture you large toe in two places." "Surprised? No." "The good news is that your knee looks okay." "So what is the plan?" I asked." "Try to stay off your right leg as much as possible." "What about the pain/discomfort?" I asked. "Oh, just take a few Motrin or Tylenol when the pain flares up", she stated, "The pain should subside in a few days." That was it, I was sent on my way. Though I am much improved from the original state I was in, the foot still has pain, from a dull ache to throbbing fire. The main issues that I see for this visit: - Have individuals on the front desk know how to check people in. - Have people on the front desk know how to spot people in distress that need immediate attention and call for assistance. - Since it was non-existent during my visit, establish triage for all patients that visit this location. - Have the front desk people be attentive on who has been seen and who hasn't. - I don't care if it is only for a few days, if someone has been diagnosed with a condition that has pain treat them for it. read more

Just a piece of advice to all, I would not suggest any of the duke urgent care facilities unless you have something very minor. Anything that is more significant than that either go to another urgent care or to an ED. They tend to make several attempts to coerce you into saying you have chest pain or breathing problems, and more often than none you are referred to an ED anyway but not in the same way you just got there but they literally call 911 for someone else to come get you and take you. I have had this happen to family of mine on more than one occasion and am not impressed. read more

Due to severe swelling, I needed help getting my diamond wedding band off. I was fortunate to have Evan Ferry as my caregiver. He was very patient, friendly, compassionate and professional. He was able to remove my ring without having to cut it off. What a relief! He is wonderful and amazing. Not only did he treat my hand, he saved my ring. Awesome work. read more
