On 2/18/26 after seeing an Ophthalmologist for a severe corneal ulcer I was told I urgently needed to start eye drops every hour. However, what I needed (Vancomycin and Tobramycin) wasn't sold at regular pharmacies, several compounding pharmacies and many hospitals couldn't help. I was in desperate need of my medication and I called the store at 435. They close at 5. They had to reach out to cvs to obtain my rx because the doctor sent it there accidentally. They not only tracked down the rx, they had it in stock and filled it by 5. I am eternally grateful because I could not go another day without it. The price was equitable to the CVS prices. They also gave me the form to send into my insurance company if I wanted to do that. The staff was incredibly warm and knowledgeable. They almost didn't have my prescription ready on time after making me pay upfront and giving me the impression that it would be ready the next day. Usually people need their prescriptions ASAP, not a week later! I don't live in Orange County but was visiting family for the holidays and needed a topical compound while I was here for a week. My doctor faxed the Rx in, as they require, and once I landed I got a voice message from the pharmacy. When I called back, still at the airport, I explained that I was visiting for the week. The person I spoke with said it would be ready within an hour before they closed the next day. Then they requested a credit card over the phone and I said I would call back with it shortly when I was no longer standing in a public place. I get to my mom's house, call back with the credit card number and am put on hold before I can give it. I got impatient so I hung up and called back. A different person answered and I gave it to them. It's a good thing that I called the next day two hours prior to closing because when I did, the first person I had spoken with told me the prescription would not be ready until a week from the day I was calling--which would have been a day after I left Orange County! After telling me it would be ready by end of day that day! And taking my payment up front! This made me regret choosing this particular compounding pharmacy when there are others around and I was very upset at the thought of spending the holidays with my family while in pain with nothing to alleviate it, which was the whole purpose of having my doctor order an Rx for me here, as I reminded the same person I first spoke with the day before who said it would be ready by end of day, next day. Their saving grace was she put me on hold but only briefly this time and told me to come at 4:45pm (as originally planned.) I did, and they called while I was on my way to affirm that it was ready, though it took me getting obviously upset to make this happen. The pharmacist who gave it to me and talked it over with me was very nice, so all's well that ends well, but there is definitely room for improvement with this initial stressful experience. read more

My daughter has been using the atropine eyedrops for a few years now. Her vision in one eye had significantly changed but since starting the eyedrops, we've definitely noticed a huge slowdown and her optometrist has been very pleased with the results! We were nervous to try/start the eyedrops but we heard positive things and are so glad now to have helped slow down her prescription! We greatly appreciated this compounding pharmacy quickly preparing a heart failure medication, pimobendan, for my daughter's pet rat. Our Veterinarian at Imperial Highway Animal Clinic recommended we give him this medication, and since there is not a commercially prepared formulation for an animal this small, he sent us to Med Specialties Compounding Pharmacy to have the compounded formula prescription filled. The pharmacist preparing the medication used chicken flavor and her rat loved it, making it easy to give him the medication twice a day. The staff at this pharmacy were a bright spot during a very difficult time. I needed a sterile compounded eye medication called amphotericin after an emergency cornea transplant. I have serious medical problems with my hands. My Pain Management Physician suggested a compound cream because another prescribed topical was no longer helping. Med Specialties took care of me the moment I called. It took a while to fill the prescription because all of the components were meshed by hand but I had it by the end of the day. I cannot ask for better service from anyone as I had here. Melissa worked the front and Jorge also helped me with the prescription in regard to having all the different parts to make the cream. Phone calls were immediately returned, they were friendly and patient. In the end I received my medicated cream with directions and a phone number if I have any problems after hours. I've been a customer of Med Specialties for over 10 years. They are an excellent compounding pharmacy. The staff is friendly (shout out especially to Marcia who runs the front desk and answers the phone, and the owner Jorge Sr) who are very helpful and work to get you your prescription in a timely manner. A few years back the pharmacist worked with my doctor to develop a custom compound to meet a specific need- much less expensive than buying the proprietary version advertised. read more

Great place if you like feeling like you're being interrogated. 20 questions before you can even enter the front door. They treat you like they are doing you a favor by filling your prescriptions and refuse to give you any information about options. Prices are higher than other local or mail order compounding pharmacies. I suggest stopping by to talk to the pharmacist before you decide to use them. I'm shocked at the reviews stating they are helpful and friendly because they have not been. I won't be using them anymore. read more

The details of my experience follow: I was given a prescription by my doctor who referred me to Med Specialties to be compounded. I was excited to support a local business. I called and got their fax number then faxed over my prescription. I called a few days later and they said they were able to fill the prescription, and I inquired about the cost and my insurance copayment. They told me they would check and call me back. Two weeks passed without word. I called again to inquire and they acted as if they didn't even remember me. Then, with research, they said they would check my insurance and call me. I asked when I could expect a call and they said the following day. A week later, I still had not received a call. I called again, and this time they asked for my insurance information which I gave to them, again. They said they would call back. At this point I called my insurance who told me it was covered. I called them back and let them know. Two days later (now over a month since I sent the original prescription), they called back to tell me the prescription was not covered. I again called the insurance who said it was covered. At this point, I called a different compounding pharmacy. They called me and confirmed receipt of the prescription and said they could fill it. 3 Business days later they called me and said insurance covered it and informed me of my copay. That seems more reasonable. I can't speak for the pharmacist at Med Specialties, only with my experience trying to get a prescription filled with various employees. I was unable to get my prescription after countless phone calls over 4 1/2 weeks time, after which I gave up and went elsewhere. I'm sure the excuses were legitimate (employees on vacation, holidays, etc) but imagine if I had needed the prescription urgently and couldn't get it for over a month? I sincerely hope my experience was a fluke. I wouldn't wish the frustration of having to constantly call without results on anyone else. read more

So here's the deal. I purchased an at home test kit from med specialties via their online ordering process 5 years ago. Yes, this was quite awhile back. My doctor had me hold off on taking the tests until just recently and, when I went to use the kit I realized I had misplaced a "requisition form" in one of the kits which states that I prepaid for the kit (as the kits themselves are sent to an outside lab, ZRT Labs). I called ZRT labs and they had me send in proof of purchase, which I did (a receipt was given to me via email). They then informed me that they needed a sales order receipt number from Med Specialties in order to process my lab kit once I sent it in. So I call up Med Specialties 2 weeks ago and they tell me they will look into it. I call back today to check in on the status and they tell me that 5 years is too long, they dont keep records of sales orders from that long ago and that I should have treated the requisition form like "money" and I was essentially now SOL. To Med Specialties credit, Marsha tried to be understanding and said in the future I should always check the policy of any store before I purchase something. Well, I did. I checked their website both when I purchased the test kits and a few weeks ago when I noticed the missing requisition form and there was nothing about them not being able to honor your purchase if you should misplace the req form but have a receipt. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but shouldn't a receipt be enough of a proof of purchase? read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. The things that have created a bad experience for me are starting to out way the positives. I can only hope that some of the Cons will change over time and that my perspective gives insight to better the business or the experience of those who might decide to go here. The Pros: -Place is picked up and clean -Never seems to be crowded which is nice -The lady at the front counter seems nice -They seem willing to compound most things with of-course a prescription from Dr. -I had heard that the pharmacist is good at what he does and is nice, the reason I went to this place, but I cannot vouch for that since I have never met the person, spoken with him, nor have any knowledge of his schooling. -The Pharmacy offers delivery for an additional cost. The Cons: -Hours of Business not very convenient, that is if you have a job that starts earlier than 10AM and ends after 5PM (Mon-Fri) and don't live very close by. -The pharmacist, Mark Gonzalez, is never available to see or speak with...I'm starting to think he doesn't exist. This creates time issues on getting your prescription taken care of which is very frustrating. I also have never been able to talk to any pharmacist in person at their location which I think is odd, instead the lady at the front will go ask someone behind the wall (assuming it's the pharmacist) the question you seek an answer to. I understand that pharmacists are extremely busy but I think it's unprofessional to not make the effort to step out from behind the wall to talk with their clients if they requested/asked to speak with them. Instead some other person plays as the middle man (in this case woman), it's just annoying since they cant really help you that much other than translate the message or go and ask the question for you. -Take to long to have your prescription ready or created. Make sure to order your prescription a month in advance just incase and to call before you drop by. read more

I have used several items from this drugstore. Most recently I needed a cream for mild pain relief. The told me to use "Peppermint Forest Rub" and it worked wonders for temporary relief of my pain, not to mention it cleared my sinus'. I've used two other compounded creams for pain relief in the past which both worked as expected. Each time I have used a product made here, it worked as advertised.
