Meddlesome Moth is an American restaurant/gastropub in the Dallas's Design District. It is known for having a creative menu, a very great atmosphere, and some original dishes. Whether it is brunch, lunch, or dinner, you can certainly find a unique & tasty dish. This review focuses on their excellent brunch. My Overall Rating - 4 1/2 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Located in the Design District next to Ascension Coffee, you'll find a wooden sign with the Meddlesome Moth name and logo extended out from an ivy covered wall. It's different & unique for Dallas, and this theme extends into the restaurant. In the back of the restaurant are three stained glass windows from the old Hard Rock Café. Again, it's unique, cool, and is the perfect complement to the menu. 1 Star. Service - We had reservations for Sunday brunch. Busy but not packed to capacity. Our server was efficient. The menu is pretty unique and I'm always of fan of servers who help guide patrons through their meal, but unfortunately we didn't get that. By no means bad, just not great. 1/2 Star. Food - Meddlesome Moth is the type of restaurant that you want to order everything on the menu. Brunch is extra hard because you struggle between sweet/savory....or both. We started with the French Press coffee, which comes with an old school sand hour glass so you know when your coffee is ready. When paired with extra gooey sticky buns, the only thing missing is the Sunday paper. But this is brunch, so of course I order the French Toast Sandwich topped with sweet sorghum cream. It's like a softer, sweeter, and dare I say it tastier version of a croque madame (grilled ham & cheese topped with an egg). It was everything you love about breakfast in a bite. I could eat this for breakfast, brunch, lunch, supper, dinner, late night, you get the idea. Brunch at the Meddlesome Moth is awesome. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. The menu is creative, the atmosphere is unique, and those them items alone make Meddlesome Moth a must visit. There are even more creative menu items on the lunch/dinner menu so a return visit is automatic. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I really enjoyed myself on my latest visit to Meddlesome Moth. Of course I'm a big fan of their sister restaurant in Fort Worth, Bird Cafe, so I'm familiar with their shared plates style menu and fabulous drinks. We started with the Catalan Mussels because mussels are delicious and these ones sit in a spicy, buttery broth made fragrant with chorizo, tomato, garlic, and sage. I thought there were a few too many mussels that didn't open up very well while cooking, which isn't the best sign. But overall they were superb. Next I enjoyed the Hungry Farmer cheese and charcuterie board which is always delicious; 3 cheeses, 3 meats, spicy whole grain mustard, pickled jicama, a marinated peach, macadamia nuts, green apple.. So good! My boyfriend opted for the steak and stout pot pie -- not really my style even if I could eat gluten, but it looked fantastic and smelled even better. Very rustic and heavy and aromatic. I definitely recommend the black currant cider. Tart and so easy to drink. Amazing beer list and a really solid variety of craft cocktails. Jon looooved his sazerac. Not crowded at all on a Sunday afternoon, and really comfortable on the patio (it's air conditioned!). read more

We came here on NYE. Reservation was made at the last minute, but thank to their new additional covered patio seating, we were able to get in. I was looking forward to try some of their delicious dishes, already picked out what I was gonna order from constantly checking out their pictures on yelp prior to coming here. Surprisingly not surprising, they were offering the special 4 course menu only for NYE so that's what we went with. Everything was perfectly made from the texture to the flavor. The only dishes I didn't like too much were my entree- the scallop in a butter sauce and the lemon pudding cake. I opted for the seafood option, thinking it'd be healthier. Boy was I wrong, the dish came out looking amazing, but I felt like I was eating straight butter. There was still some unmelted butter in the sauce, not sure if that was their intention or not, but it wasn't very appealing to me. My date's dessert, the lemon pudding cake was a little tough and not that moist, and especially didn't taste like pudding. Regardless of those hiccups listed above, we both thoroughly enjoyed the food, service, and the setting. Even better when all the waitresses that night dolled up big time, with long black cocktail dresses that have pretty deep cut in the back. This place has one of the most impressive beer selections I've come across in a long time, but as far a this place being a restaurant, it is lacking. Basically, this is one gigantic bar which serves "bar-ish" type food albeit fancied up as tapas. Came here on a Saturday night (with reservations thank God - wait was 2 hours!), and was promptly led to our miniscule table for two amongst a virtual sea of tables jammed to the rafters with people. The air alone was just so stuffy and there was minimal circulation in the room which was not a pleasant experience. Service was surprisingly good considering the volume they were dealing with although there seemed to be many different serves. We had different wait staff for every different small plate we ordered which was served in no particular order. This is where you find yourself flagging anyone down passing by in an apron for basic needs such as napkins, hot sauce, etc. This is obviously a place to see and be seen with a high trend factor, but I found it to be a little high maintenance for me. I would, however, return during a less frequented week night to sit at the bar and sample some of their amazing selections of ales. Their fancy pants tapas and social scene they can keep! read more

The Meddlesome Moth is the diamond in the center of the engagement ring. Keith has been dating the DFW area for years, and dating us pretty well with Flying Saucers, 8.0 and Flying Fish. But for years, he's been plotting on how to take over our minds with a new level of excellence in the "gastropub" category and finally proposed to us with the Meddlesome Moth. There are many places in DFW that offer at least a Chimay or Maredsous. But, in fine craft beer circles (if fine food lovers are "foodies" would we call ourselves "beeries"?), distribution of special crafts is a big key. The Moth obtains beers that are truly special, and does it on a grand scale. For example, I went to the Rare Ale tasting April 9, 2011 and they had 52 finely crafted ales on tap, mostly in the 7-11% abv range and including such special, difficult to find ales like Mephestopholes '09, Bitches Brew (impossible to find), Burton Baton and more. Oh, and GET THE RIBS! Amazing. You could eat these with a straw the meat is so tender. Very cool ambiance. We went for dinner at 9pm and the place was still hoppin. We tried a variety of dishes - some were definitely better than others (the ones that had beef were my fave!). -1 star for service. It was pretty nonexistent. Our waiter was nowhere to be seen while we were eating, so we couldn't even flag him down. We eventually got desperate enough to try and flag down anyone who would pay attention to us, but they never came back with our requests, so it was pretty futile. read more

The food is of decent quality--not sure if it's worth the price you will end up paying at the end. The atmosphere inside is not for everyone given their design but it is cool. There is a long bar which has pretty good cocktails but nothing to write home about. The service seemed okay also. Not too impressive overall unfortunately since we were very excited to check it out. Been here plenty of times, but this last time I was with a friend who is a vegetarian. We ended up ordering only vegetarian options off the menu, and they were all AMAZING. All the other times I've been here, I've gotten meat heavy options, such as the tandoori lamb, bone marrow, and the Thai PEI Mussels (which are to DIE FOR, btw). This time, we ordered: - tomato burrata - vegan meatball marinara - winter vegetable pie Definitely need to start incorporating more of the veggie menu items into my order the next time I'm here. Tabled reserved for 4 and was able to sit 5 on time. The hostesses are nice and very accommodating. We had shrimp and grits. Amazing! Chorizo style mussels. (First time I had) yummy. What was I thinking? Pork ribs! My friends say they are best ever! We had a cheese board too! That was delicious. I noticed this place seems to be a place where we "share". My friends ordered tonight and I don't have any complaints. The Bread was fresh and hot too! Our server Christian was also very awesome and attentive. We have not had to look for him one time. Dallas - Day 1 - Stop 2 Nice, hip gastropub with a comfortable atmosphere. Good place to kill time, which is why we were there. Huge wall of taps with a good selection of beers. Bacon lollipops - 4/5 - Thick cut bacon, funnel cake and hollandaise sauce. Never would have imagined putting these flavors together but it worked really well. I really enjoyed the extensive beer selection on tap (I'm a fan of porters and stouts) and the atmosphere of the restaurant. However, the food to me was just average. I ordered the mussels and the bone marrow. The mussels were a bit small but the flavoring was decent. The bone marrow was mixed in with a green salsa sauce and capers, and to me, the flavor profile was a bit off. My girlfriend ordered the bratwurst and when I sampled it, it was just okay. In addition, I've gone here on a diffrent night and ordered the fish and chips, and that too was just meh. If you want to have some beers and cocktails on the patio and hang out with your friends on a nice evening, then this is the place to go. Tip: if you don't want to valet, there is a spot behind the apartment complex down the street reserved for retail parking. read more

There is nothing not to like about Meddlesome Moth. Food is tasty, cocktails are perfection, service is quick and the atmosphere is great! My favorite experience here at Meddlesome Moth was when my friend and I came for an afternoon drink and sat at the bar. We asked the bartender for some suggestions on the best cocktails. He simply asked what kind of drinks we liked and didn't like and he actually made us special drinks to fit our taste buds that weren't even on the menu! It really showed how much he loved his job and the drink was one of the best cocktails I've had. A huge plus in our books! I have only been here for drinks or dinner and it's always usually packed! I tried the steamed mussels (super delicious, if you can't decide what to get, definitely try the mussels!) tandoori lamb (mediocre, nothing special, it's just meat on a stick) and the moth balls (fried ricotta balls, pretty good) So the food wasn't as amazing as I expected but we were still satisfied. I do want to try some of the other popular dishes on the menu. Service 4/5 Drinks 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Food 3/5 In my opinion, drinks and the warm, welcoming vibe were the best part about Meddlesome Moth. This months culinary experience for the for of us was to the M Moth. Upon entering it is a very cool atmosphere. I did quickly learn however that they have tightly packed in the tables. It was common to get butt bump d by some server bringing food to the table next to us. They have an extensive beer list that seemed very appealing. We aren't beer drinkers though so we decided to partake in cocktails. They were good; not amazing. Between the 4 of us we split 7 appetizers. The pro belly was awesome. The rest was just good with the bone marrow, collard greens and moth balls falling into the okay category. For the price, I doubt we will be going back anytime soon. read more

Service was spot-on from Chuck, Chucky, Chuckles, Charles, Chaz... Awesome, outgoing, honest, funny-but-not-condescendingly-so fella with full knowledge of the menu, and his recommendations were perfect for everyone in our extended family. The Moth is a dog-friendly restaurant (how we found it), so we brought the pups and were pleasantly surprised to find that: a.) patio seating got us through the wait immediately, and b.) the patio was both air conditioned and pretty quiet for being on a corner on a Friday night. Ambiance inside seemed pretty cool (think swanky elegance: intentionally dim, with well-positioned, narrow-beamed lights and three large, back-lit stained-glass panels). Everyone seemed to be having a good time, plenty of martini glasses were out (Friday night, so why not?), so good marks here, too. I had the lamb rigatoni (braised lamb, jalepeño, mint, labne), which was fantastic. I can't do spicy, so I was taking Chuck's word that it wasn't, despite being burned in the past by similar promises at other restaurants. Chuck was right, so no spicy heat, lamb was rich and buttery smooth, the mint was a perfect amount, and the portion was pretty sizeable. Wife had the sea bass and loved it. I just asked if she liked it, and her response was "that was really, REALLY good!" (she's a chef, so THAT is saying something, cuz my cooking never gets that response). Kiddos had a pesto chicken sandwich, Dr. Pepper ribs and bone marrow with baguette and roasted garlic, and each ate everything (says a lot for our picky little eaters). My sister had chicken piccata, and said it was a bit overcooked, but my wife tried it and said it was perfect. Sister's partner had the Wagyu pastrami (Chicagoan educated at Syracuse, so the guy knows pastrami), and he said it was pretty darn good. For dessert, my wife, kiddos and I split orders of caramel bread pudding and guava cheesecake... Such a wonderful food coma. We didn't know what to expect, so I'd say this was as close to perfection as we've had in quite a while. The only other place to come this close was Bird and Jim, a restaurant in Estes Park that has more of a mountain feel, but same kind of high-bar for culinary quality and service that's subtle to most (beautiful presentation, texture, height, color, clean framing of plate), but not overtly bougie. Locally-sourced ingredients, quality- and customer-focused food and service, upbeat-but-still-chill atmosphere, and an overall great experience... Wish there were more places like this. read more

I was recently introduced to Meddlesome Moth by work friends. And I'm eternally grateful that they did. I think this is a fantastic spot! We brought a group of about 20, and they had a menu already determined for us - we loved the small plates, family style that was served for our group! The service was very well done and attentive, despite the fact that the place was busy. Our group was in a little alcove next to the bar, which was great. We got to be a part of the Dallas night scene while still having our own space. The small plate menu we were served included beet salad (delicious!), deviled eggs , sushi tuna, bacon lollipops (mmm), bone marrow, tenderloin (tender and juicy and yummy), asparagus (fresh and crisp!), house special Moth Balls, shrimp & grits (LOVED - MY FAV), berry cobbler (warm, sweet, and just about perfect), sundae (soo good), and to each their own on drinks. Just about everything was to my liking, as you can see! The place was packed on a Thursday night. The locals love it. The ideal food and drink spot!! I've been twice to meddlesome moth, once for a casual happy hour with coworkers and once for a dinner date, and have been wowed both times! As far as atmosphere and interiors go, this place is hard to beat! I love the rock and roll stained glass panels and the dim lighting. Plus they don't play blaring music so you can actually have a great conversation. The staff is really helpful and attentive, and they know the menu very well. The foot itself is really, really good. We had the mussels off the appetizers and were really pleased with how fresh and flavorful they were. Served with a heaping portion of warm French bread, the oysters easily feed two or three. We also got the hummus plate and the shrimp and grits. Both were awesome, and I have to say the shrimp was some of the most succulent and yummy I've ever had! As far as their drinks go, this place has the biggest variety of on tap beers that I've ever seen. They also have great cocktails and I was impressed with their whiskey mule. Parking can be a little tricky in this area. Both times I've been I've lucked out parking across the street next to Camden apartments (I even went inside and asked the apartment staff if I could park there and they said it was totally fine). Visited 9/22/18 (Fall Equinox) around 4pm. Not crowded. After a Saturday getting inspired window shopping around the Design District, it was a welcome respite as I was about to get hangry. Note: They switched to dinner menu at 4pm. Complimentary Valet is the only place to park or you're parking nearby and walking. Atmosphere- very hip Dallas unique chic. If it wasn't the flooding weekend, and not so muggy, we would have sat outside on their awesome patio with plants and fresh growing herb garden. However, a sleek business Cowboy and his sidekick went out to smoke, and since my smoking days are long gone I would not have enjoyed sitting out there smelling it. Service- Excellent. These servers have to KNOW everything about their extensive list of brews and the changing Chef's specials, so they have chops!!! Ours gave hubby a superb flight of IPA's. Also, we watched a gal hand chalk the big board perfectly with the nightly specials. Hand lettering- so impressive! Food/Beverages- We shared the Shrimp & Grits w/Jalepeno Gravy and the Scallops on fried Polenta with Peppers. Both excellent. I ate my scallops separately from the fried polenta cakes to enjoy each of their separate flavors. The sauces and components, all very complex and deep and filling, all perfectly cooked. Our server suggested against the Beef Carpaccio as he said it was more of a tasting than something substantial and I appreciated his knowledgable suggestions and recommendations. Again, hubby appreciated and enjoyed the flight of IPA's suggested by our Server. I had to enjoy their Basil Cooler (mocktail) as I have to lay off alcohol indefinitely due to an imbalance of yeast/mold in my body, which was truly a challenge here because of my love of alcoholic beverages and their extensive quality list! Wes has been bartending at the Moth for several years, and I just love him. He's fun to watch, he's funny, and he really aims to please. I think he's the best thing about the place, but the beer selection is quite huge. Not too many wines to choose from, but some good ones. The Fish&Chips with fries is really good IF Wes orders them for me. I think he has ties to the kitchen mafia because my fish and fries are crispy. The fish are oftentimes over-battered, and the fries are limp, oily, with nary a crunch nearby. Hamburgers are so good. Salads are delectable. T farrow dish is the bomb. I tried the soup of the day that consisted of fresh herbs, spices, avocado, and meatballs--all tied into a succulent broth. ....excuse for a bit as I wipe my chin from salivating over yesterday's lunch. Geez. I had the mothinator which was loaded with pork confit AKA pulled pork. Mmm, on that note, Meddlesome Moth, let's leave the 'cue to Pecan Lodge. The portions are monstrous and believe it or not, the fries are killer. They are thinner cut but are obviously fried twice--which makes a difference. The "one eyed Jack" turned this egg hater into a part-time fan. The drink selection is lengthy and the ambiance made for the perfect day or night date. Pretty packed on a weekday night. Luckily I was alone and seated immediately at the bar area. This place is much larger than it looks on the outside. Very extensive drink menu, whether you want a cocktail or some beer. They have a variety of food that it was difficult for me to decide, but my bartender/serve definitely helped with recommendations. Belgian Mussels - Nice and light flavor to it. Nothing to crazy or clashing flavors with the rest of my dish. New Orleans BBQ Shrimp - Big shrimp and big flavors. From the cool decor (complete with the old Hard Rock stain glass panes featured into the architecture) to the cozy tables/booths...to the hilarious "naughty" posters over the privies in the men's restroom (I can't address the ladies, though I hope they have something equally cheeky). We were delighted over the extensive beer list and local craft beers featured on tap. Also, the menu was especially attractive to us as vegetarians because between the grilled avocados, the "Moth Balls" (trust me, if like cheese, just DO IT), and for the main course--Farotto (savory risotto, spring mushrooms, breadcrumbs). We both loved this spot & will return for Sunday brunch (10am-3pm)! My boyfriend and I were amazed to finally find a food & drink spot that we both love! We moved here 2 months ago from Houston, and have had a few "bad" experiences at restaurants. We went Sunday afternoon at 4pm (missed brunch which cuts off at 3pm). The wait staff was polite and friendly. We ordered drinks from the HUGE local and imported beer menu based on recommendations our waitress got from the bartender, after we explained what we like in beers. We enjoyed the bone marrow and moth ball appetizers - both delicious and sized nicely for the price. Both were VERY decadent! After having some more beer (different ones, so we could check out some beers we have never even heard of), we decided to split the beef and stout pot pie - which was amazing. I could actually taste that the beef had been slow cooked in red wine & stout before being put in a flaky, tender pie crust with a few veggies and a rich, thick beef broth. LOTS of delicious beef in this bad boy. Because I have a sweet tooth and am a coffee fiend, I had to try the homemade Oreo cheesecake and press pot coffee :-) I was not disappointed! Both were delicious. Prices are reasonable for the elevated "foodie" experience you can have here! Our waitress said that during Happy Hour, beer and a few cocktails and wines are less expensive, but appetizer prices do not change. This was our second trip because the first one was incredible, however, the service this time left us incredibly disappointed. The food was delicious, but our service was... perplexing. Initially, we noticed that our server had a very flat demeanor, but we were rolling with it. We raved about this place to our family who was visiting from out of town and were excited for the yummy food and drinks. We waited for a while after ordering drinks and finally, after delivering one and walking away, our server came back to let us know the beer taps weren't working, so we decided to order mixed drinks for when our dinner was ready. The bloody Mary's are fantastic. Get a bloody if you go for brunch. 2. The portion sizes are huge especially for how reasonable the prices are. 3. The food is amazing. I'd never heard of the Moth until a friend recommended for a happy hour meet up. The vibe of the place is mellow but with an upscale flare. The on tap choices are top notch for any level of hops connoisseur. The biggest thing for me was the choices in mead. From the sweet honey flavor of the Viking blod to the more tart wine flavor of the Red Agnes, the choices were prefect to pair with any of their food options. I had the Ahi Tuna skewers that were covered in glazed jalapeño on a bed of slightly toasted sushi rice with picked cucumber slivers and that was on point! The other guests with me went for the burger (also highly recommended) and they looked amazing! For the quality of the tap selections, mead choices and food, the pricing is just right.
