A group of friends and I wanted to go someplace nice for a summer lunch, so we chose this Durham location located near Duke University. Mediterra Grill has no atmosphere which makes it a nice place to go and not get distracted from your purpose for being there. For me it was to eat a decent snack to squelch my appetite until later AND to have a good time with friends. I did more of the latter than the eating a decent snack part. Let me say the food I had was healthy.... Yes I think French fries, done right are healthy but there was no flavor to anything on my plate and the condiments were lacking or non existent. I guess for restauranteurs it's better to serve food that patrons can flavor to their liking than be heavy handed with flavor that turns people off but I'm somewhat adventurous when it comes to food and have never returned a dish because it was too anything except bland and on that score I almost returned the plate I had here. The food was cooked... I didn't bite into anything that was raw, cold or yucky it just was flavorless. Now onto price; it's near Duke University where people pay over $35,000/year to get a degree. Do I need to say more? Since we were a group it was every man for himself, we were all guys, so I felt every penny leave my pocket as I paid. Do I recommend it, bottom line? This place is close to work, but their Mediterranean food is very mediocre. It's got a nice well-lit space, lots of seating, TVs showing ESPN, etc. It's good if you work on West Campus/Hospital. I come here when I get a hankering for lamb. Their lamb kabobs, even when you tell them "medium-rare", comes out tough like leather. It's charred at the edges and way over-marinated. You barely taste the lamb, just the over-whelming marinade. Their tabbouleh is good. Their pita is not. If a cracker and a piece of bread had a baby, it would be Mediterra Grill's pita. The tzatziki is OK, a bit watery and very simple. Warning: If you are a fan of late lunches, they start charging dinner prices past 3pm. You don't get more food, you just pay more. I stopped by Mediterra Grill for the first time recently. I have been wanting to go there for a while now, but somehow I kept forgetting to go there. They are located near Duke hospital in the pavilion area with a cluster of other restaurants so they might be easy to miss. I enjoyed my meal here. I ordered the lamb kabob rice platter with falafel and baba ganoush. Everything was delicious, and I also liked the pita bread and sauces that came with the meal for dipping. Mediterra might not be the best Med. food in the area (stiff competetion in the area), but they are right up there. I would definitely return in the future! read more

first of all my hometown is 6 hours to Athens Greece. Greek food is my favorite food in the world and i cook greek food myself for 20 years. This is a decent place with good food and especially their lamb kebap is fantastic in USA standarts. But but but... I want to ask the owner how somebody opens a greek/mediterrian food restaurant and dont serve tazikis sauce?? I maybe ate more than 100 different mediterrian restaurants in my life and first time not get a tazikis sauce. Customers must dip pitas in this sauce and this is the beauty of the cousine. Mediterra is located in the epicenter of the lunch rush for Duke Med Center employees, but I have to say that there was no line at 11:30 or so on a Friday. I'm assuming that is only because we were early and not because of the restaurant's quality. As far as quick service establishments go, their menu had great variety and everything seemed fresh and homemade. There are a number of vegetarian options as well as intriguing daily specials (Moroccan chicken and some kind of Tilapia today). My falafel wrap was good on its own, but made much better by the spicy chili sauce they included when I asked for my meal to be made "spicy". It's a sweet chili pepper relish that complemented the falafel quite well, in my opinion. Try it! We also had the hummus and baba ghanouj. Not usually a baba fan, but this stuff worked for me. Service was very pleasant and our group of 7 received our food in minutes. I don't always eat Middle Eastern food, but when I do, I prefer Mediterra. read more

A million times better than Greek Fiesta and almost as good as Flame Kabob. I've had their gyro salad, gyro sandwich and spicy chicken wrap and they were ALL delicious. The meats were really well cooked, perfectly seasoned and always tender. Their menu is pretty extensive and they serve certain Mediterranean dishes that aren't as common such as kafta and hashwi. What's weird is that all their main dishes are absolutely delish, but their sides...not so much. I've had their rice pilaf, pasta salad and Greek salad and they were mediocre at best. They display their sides near the register and trust me when I say that it looks better than it tastes. It's not that it tastes bad, but their sides are just really bland. Service is great here! You order at the register, take your number to your table and they bring your food out for you. There were some dishes I'd never heard of and asked the person behind the register to explain to me what some of these dishes consisted of and she was very helpful in explaining things. This little deli has a wide vocabulary of "Mediterra" food. That evening I had all cold food but want to go back and try other dishes. The food is set out cafeteria style on a steam table, so I think some picking and choosing may be in order, depending on what is on display. More on that with my return visit. Their Hummos, while not the best I ever ate was still pretty darn good! And all foods came out in reasonable servings, making this a good food value, too. I'm a fan of this place because the price for the platters match with the amount of food you're given. I have yet to finish a plate as I'm so full by the end of my lunch. Affordable, convenient, and tasty=I am definitely a fan! In my humble opinion, Mediterra Grill ranks high up on the list of best Mediterranean dining options in the Triangle. Clearly it's in a great location for the Duke crowd, and though they can seemingly get pretty busy during the lunch rush, I've never had the experience of their service suffering because of it. The staff is always friendly and efficient regardless of how swamped they are. The kabobs are really good, and the kabob platter comes with rice, pita, and two sides of your choice (not too shabby!). The kabob meat can be a bit overdone at times I've noticed, but it is generally spot on. The hummus, falafel, and cucumber sauce are all sure to please. Yup, you could probably get your fill solely on the many side menu options here. The chicken shawirma wrap is also always awesome. You gotta love the french fries rolled up in that chicken pita goodness! Inside, the restaurant is spacious, well lit, and equipped with a few flat screen televisions which are usually televising one sporting event or another. Outside, there are a bunch of tables if you so choose to enjoy your meal on the Pavillion East patio (not a bad idea!). Mediterra is one of my go-to places for fast, filling, and yummy food. It's also not as unhealthy as neighbors like Enzo's or TGI Friday's. It's a good place to sit down and eat since it's clean, has lots of space, and isn't very noisy. Just as good to get it to-go; the wait's not that long. I like the rice platters a lot and have tried all the chicken ones; they're all pretty great. Sometimes I'm disappointed with the amount of meat they give though. Extra meat is at least $3. I've also had the orzo salad and most of the sides and they're all pretty good. I always get French Fries for one of my sides. Anyways, I come here for a satisfying meal, not necessarily for an amazing Mediterranean experience. But it's yummy and definitely more filling than Chipotle. I often get a three side meal, with mujjadara (lentils + rice, flavorful), humus (good enough), pita, and a cucumber/tomato salad. Mediterra Grill is alright. I ordered the chicken kabab rice platter menu and was not impressed by the quality of the dish. The meat did not come in a skew (which is fine, but the taste of it was forgettable), rice was pretty good but a bit too greasy, and greek salad I ordered on the side wasn't spectacular - it came with some lettuce leaves and two whole halapenos. I was confused by why it was called the greek salad at all. I did enjoy the hummus and pita bread, another side I ordered, though. I do think this place is very overpriced for the kind of food they offer. When I ate mediterra grill, I was craving for mediterranean food that I did not complain much, but I don't think this is a kind of place I would come to when I want to dine on something nice. I thought it was nice that here was part of the MOP program (merchants on points - system for duke students). Will be coming back for future cravings, but definitely not often. read more

This place has opened in one of the business buildings across from Duke West campus, adjacent to the Chipotle. It's nice to have a Durham Mediterranean option to go up against Baba Ghannouj and International Delights. That said, I can't help measuring it against Triangle standards like Raleigh's Neomonde and Chapel Hill's inestimable Mediterranean Deli. We had the gyro, falafel, and lamb and chicken kabobs. The kabobs were incredibly generous, tender, and the lamb was cooked a nice medium rare. This is probably Mediterra's go-to dish. I'd stick with the lamb kabobs here, a double helping if you're big and/or hungry. I can't really praise or complain about anything else. The rest of the food did the job, but I was hoping for a Durham competitor that would quell my constant longing for CH's Med Deli. Still, the food did its job, even if the cold counter was nowhere near as well-stocked as I wished and the Lebanese grape leaves were oddly served cold (something I generally expect with Greek dolmades only). We went with two cute kids, a 4 year old and a 9 month old, and the owner was generous with sending out free deserts. Tasty, yes, but unspectacular. Their mammoul left me missing the rosewater mammoul at Med Deli, and I noted, with sadness, the lack of basmah. Seems like the only place I can get them in the Triangle is the Raleigh Neomonde (no luck at the Cary location). Mediterra will get all my business that previously went to Baba Ghannouj (overpriced, underquality) and International Delights (sulky waitstaff, minimal variety). They are now my quick and dirty Durham go-to for Mediterranean. But when the real hankering starts, I'll make the trek to CH for Med Deli...and if I want good Mediterranean deserts like basmah...well, Neomonde in Raleigh is still the only place. read more

This is a great lunch spot! You don't really notice it at first because it is overshadowed by the Chipotle, but definitely try this place out if you like falafels. This is the first place I've tried in the area for Mediterranean food, it seems like there's very few, so I don't have anything to compare it to except to stuff I've tried in Cali. I thought the falafel sandwich was totally worth it for $5. The falafels had the perfect amount of crispiness on the outside topped off with a creamy sauce and fresh veggies wrapped in light, fluffy bread so I actually felt healthy eating it! Honestly, I was blown away by how nice the staff was here, hence the 5 stars. They bring you your order and clear away your dishes with a smile, which I didn't expect in such a casual joint. I would order delivery just for their hummus. Grape leaves are OK but I still find myself always getting them. I have had their chicken shwarma which is at most OK too, a tad bit bland. I do recommend their chicken kabobs, also very well seasoned. Their service is outstanding. They're usually pretty quick. I usually receive my food from the same driver, who is always very friendly. Can't say that the food here is amazing, but it's an option for decent-to-good Mediterranean Food in this part of Durham. I think it's a bit overpriced and I wish that they sold their wares by the pound, but that's not the case. If you are hoping to come home with takeout that allows for hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouli, pita, falafel, etc. it's going to cost a ton of money and you'll be stuck with a lot more food than you need as there are two sizes only for the deli counter with the small size being about $4 and the larger size 50% more. I tend to compare all Mediterranean spots without wait service in the Triangle to Neomonde, but there's no Neomonde near my home. If there was, I'd have no reason to ever come back here. Because it's close to home, I will be a somewhat regular customer (say, twice a year). I thought the falafel wrap to be quite good, so much so that I found myself craving another as I was falling asleep the night we went. The cold okra salad I ordered would have been a whole lot better served warm, almost to the point of my thinking it was made the night before as a hot dish and someone accidentally threw it into the refrigerated case that morning and everyone failed to notice it wasn't back on the hot bar. If you are someone who eats out a lot and need some variety, this place will work. Otherwise, find a better place to eat. Ordered the TRIO-VEGGIE PLATTER selecting all hot side sections - chickpeas, spinach and eggplant. Also ordered the GRAPE LEAVES (small portion). The hot side sections were hot, which is what I wanted. But everything went downhill from there. The chickpeas and spinach were too bland, and the eggplant was nicely done but too watery. The grape leaves were decent; actually that could describe the entire meal - okish. As the rating goes, I have had better. And for a meal that went close to ~$15, I would expect a better experience. The grape leaves were underwhelming while the baba ganoush lacked that signature smokey flavor. The pita was good, but it's the same pre-bought that you get at every other Mediterranean place (except Neomonde/Sassool where it's freshly made). I don't know why I waited to so long to try Mediterra, I love falafel and I love tzatziki and this place does it right on both accounts! I spent a few minutes staring at their menu in the window before deciding what platter I was going to get. I got the falafel platter which came with four falafels, a heap of tabouli, two grape leaves, tzatziki sauce, tahini sauce and pita all for under $10!!! Everything was delish and I was definitely very satisfied after eating. The only thing I did not love was that the tabouli was a bit watery so I had to kind of separate it from the juices. Lamb shwarma was OK, meat was kind of minced and I asked for extra spicy and couldn't taste any spice at all..
