My one and only for color in Toronto! I've been seeing Jazmin for years now for my perfect balayage. Once you find your person, you know! I initially came across Medulla & Co on a blog probably in 2011 that discussed that their owner was one of the few in Toronto that knew the correct ombré techniques learned in Los Angeles when it first became popular and he trained his staff on hair painting. Fast track to years later and I'm still in love every time Jazmin colors me. The colors are always blended so perfectly. I even lived in LA and went to THE salon in Beverly Hills known for balayage. $450 US later and Jazmin is way way better at making it look more natural. I'm usually super nonchalant about a cut so will get cut elsewhere for cheap, but color is super important to me and want the best! Trust me they know color here. read more

If you are blonde, I don't recommend coming here. While the salon is beautiful and staff are nice, my hair was not lifted properly and I'm left with very gold roots. It's pretty obvious that my natural was not lifted properly. When I returned the next day to work out how to resolve it, I was totally gaslight with how it looked. I would not recommend this salon based on my experience!!! I recently had a balayage done by Hamid at this salon, and unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience. From the moment I arrived, Hamid gave me attitude simply because I was 10 minutes late, despite my sincere apology. Seeing that he didn't seem to care about my hair or my satisfaction was disheartening. To make matters worse, the results of the balayage were extremely underwhelming. It felt as though he only did a few highlights, and my hair remained virtually unchanged. What added to the frustration was the hefty price tag of around $700 that I was charged for such a lackluster outcome. when I call to its manager, she told me you were late 10 min, Hamid couldn't do your hair! so we can give you another appointment in 1 month and you would be fully charged!! I used to love this salon when they were on Avenue Road. Prices were fair. Luis did my colour. They have since moved to Davenport and their prices are a joke. They charge an environmental fee due to covid. The chair I sat in to have my colour applied was not wiped after the previous client, they don't recycle plastics/paper etc. The environmental fee is a money grab. Luis has his assistant mix an apply my colour yet I am paying his inflated rates. Several people I know have since switched. People will pay for quality but will soon tire of being taken advantage of. read more

My first visit was with Anthony he cut my hair. Loved the hair cut. I have curly hair and he definitely knew how to cut my hair to make my curls as defined as possible. For my experience with Anthony I would give him 5 stars and would most definitely recommend him. However, I went back to get my hair coloured with Jenna at the Yorkville location and I've heard great things and had high expectations. I showed her a picture of the colour I wanted and the end result was nowhere near to what I showed her. First off, my hair came out WAY darker then I wanted when I had specifically requested it be light for the summer. This appointment ended up lasting 3 hours and $350 later my hair was not the colour I wanted and just didn't seem worth the money at all. Normally, I am always willing to spend on my hair to make sure I get the result I want. Unfortunately, this was not the case this time. I was very disappointed and unfortunately will not be going back to medulla and will be having my hair re-coloured to get the colour I want. Extremely disappointing for $300+ read more

My 2nd time getting colour there, and I'm not as impressed as I used to be about my colour. She didn't really discuss what she was going to do, or show me what colour I was going to get. I just got some black that covered my greys. My boyfriend told me that the back of my head looks like a myriad of black, brown and my old strands of highlights. I was ready to do highlights, but she decided not to, I'm not sure why. I have to see it better for myself to see if there really is a problem. at $70 something a pop, you'd think there would be more skill to this. HOWEVER, Love the blow dry bar and the girl who did it for me was really patient and gave me a curl in my hair. $23 (including taxes) but the prices are going to go up to $35, but you can buy in bulk for a cheaper deal. The other crappy thing was that the salon had these two socialites getting ready for a party bitching and complaining how the updo they were currenty looks ugly, in front of the stylist. It's terrible some people have no class. Anyway, I might need to find a new colourist, but I'm still a big fan of the blowdry and hair cuts. read more

I asked for a senior colorist to avoid any mistakes but sadly that is exactly what I got .when she try to "fix" it it made it worst , I ended up with over processed , dry , dull hair with too many highlights. Exact opposite from what I wanted and from what we discussed and agreed upon during the initial consultation. I did reach out to their customer service person sent her an email and just expressed my disappointment but didn't even get a response, nothing , totally ignored me . I had been away for a few years, but when I returned, within a ten day period I got a haircut, colour and I paid ahead for 20 weeks of blow dries. The amount of money spent was close to a thousand dollars! A week after this start, I called a few minutes before 9 and left a message for one of the owners to call me. When no-one called, I left another message with my phone number again in a week. To this day, - now that my twenty weeks of prepaid services are done, no- one bothered to return those two calls. I don't usually take the time to write a good or bad review. But, I came here last year to get my hair coloured and styled and my terrible experience still crosses my mind sometimes. As a Commerce grad I feel like I have a good understanding of how a business should be run, regardless of what kind of business it is. Customers are always first priority.. but not at this place... I am giving it a 2 because the ambiance is nice. I'll give it that.. but the people are terrible. The girls that run the front desk are completely ignorant and rude. You have to make a $50 deposit when you book your appointment just in case you don't show up. And that's fine, I completely understand that because that's a loss of business for them if you don't show up. But the thing is I did show up and I asked to get the $50 back at the end of the appointment and she said ohh because you had your consultation at the other location we can't give it back to you right now. Afterwards I ended up calling the location where I had my consultation and the woman said oh you don't get that back until you come the next time. So basically you never get the $50 back. Honestly I don't give a shit about the $50, but I don't like when people steal my money, and thats a steal. Also, I had my hair coloured by Louis... I am personally not a fan. He didn't make me feel welcome, kind of made me feel inferior and not very comfortable. Then I had my hair styled by an older man... it was around $60 for the worst style I have ever had in my life. I could have curled my hair better than he did. I forget his name now, but anyways... I will never return to this place because its really not worth it for me. I came here for a rescue the day after getting a really bad haircut somewhere else. Sandra came over and looked at my hair before it was washed and after a quick minute knew exactly what was up. She talked me through what she was doing and why and even taught me how to style it myself at the end to get the look I wanted. Medulla & Co is the best salon I've been to for both cut and color. I first came to the salon with very damaged hair from coloring gone wrong at another salon. Since then, it's been about a year and a half. Despite growing out damage, my color (done by Luis) has never looked better. I have very fine, dark blonde hair and my highlights blend perfectly. I go much longer between highlighting than I used to, which is much better for my hair. One thing I love about this place is the emphasis on the health of your hair - whenever I come in, I'll always have a treatment done, and I'll leave with my hair looking and feeling healthy. I came to the salon with overprocessed hair, but regular treatments and trims with Tara have rescued it. It's always a pleasure coming in and I couldn't be happier that I found this place. It's always a stress-free experience when you know you're in good hands. 5 stars :) read more

What is with the $5 Environmental Fee they charge you at the end? I didn't see any special green bins that are typical for such programs? This seems to be a nickle and diming of the customer and doesn't appear to be legitimate. It would be evident in the salon if they were using the appropriate recycling materials. Also, if they were environmentally friendly why not post it?? It's not written anywhere until you're dinged at the end...and even then they don't print out an itemized receipt where you'd spot it...unless you specifically ask for it...which is how I found out about it. I really, REALLY wanted to like this place, as the vibe is really welcoming and stylish, and customer service is top-notch. However, for the price, I was expecting an amazing haircut from really knowledgeable staff. I walked in with really long blond hair and expected to walk out with something chic and ultra edgy and stylish-- I was willing to pay the price for a great haircut. I specifically said the words "stylish" and "short", "lots of layers", and "the OPPOSITE of conservative", but I ended up walking out with the exact same hair I walked in with, just a few inches shorter, blunt, and some side bangs. Basically the very essence of what I didn't want. The cut itself took a long time to do, and I was so disappointed when I left, that I just didn't want the stylist touching my hair anymore. I went back in for a re-cut and had a different hairstylist who cut my hair way shorter (which is what I wanted), but my haircut ended up again, very conservative, blunt, and not at all the edgy that I wanted. The hairstylist said she wanted to avoid the flip that happens when hair is left too long at the back, but in the end she left it long enough for this to happen anyway and I HATE the flip that keeps happening. It feels like these guys are way ahead when it comes to customer service, but this doesn't matter to me. What I wanted was the best haircut ever and I was willing to splurge on it ($85 for a women's cut, people), but I ended up getting the worst haircut ever. So sorry guys, I hate to say that you're just not going to get the caliber of haircut one should expect from paying $85. I've had a way better haircut elsewhere for way less. read more

I can't tell you how disappointing my experience was getting my hair coloured at this salon chain. It all started with when I called to make an appointment originally at the Queen St location and told them I wanted an appointment for a specific date for my birthday event. I was told at 2pm that day that if I came in the same day for 4:15 for a consultation I could get an appointment on the day I wanted. I left work early to get there on time, had a lovely consultation with a woman named Liz and then things went south fast. I went to book my appointment for the date we discussed at reception and the receptionist just smiled at me and said, "Sorry both the appointments available on that day were booked this afternoon so we don't have any appointments left on that day anymore". I stood there for a moment and said, but you just told me two hours ago if I rush down here for 4:15 that I could have an appointment that day; why didn't you hold this appointment for me? She just smiled at me in a condescending manner and said, sorry but those people didn't have to wait for a consultation and could book their appointments right away. I couldn't book yours until you had your consultation. I again asked why did you not hold one of the appointments for me? And she replied, I told you sorry there's nothing else I can do. She didn't try to contact one of the other salons and continued to be rude as I pressed for any solution. I left very upset and decided to called the Yorkville location. I spoke to the receptionist there and informed her what had happened. She was very nice and said to give her a few minutes and she would call me back. A few minutes later the owner of the salon, Luis, called me and again was nice. Apologized for how the receptionist had handled things and worked with me to book an appointment at that location instead on the day I needed the appointment. He said the price would be the same as I was quoted at the Queen St location, $205 +tax. Great! I was happy and showed up on the date early and ready for my colour and blowout excited for a change. I showed Michael, my colourist, the photos of what I wanted (darker hair), and he said great and went to mix colour. While he was brushing it out he commented how healthy my hair was and said it was nice to touch. I mentioned to Michael that I had done my roots myself about 3 weeks ago but there were already some greys poking through and asked to be sure they will be covered as part of the appointment. He assured me the toner he would use with cover them and not to worry. I also mentioned to him I had a blonde Ombre two years ago and it dried my curly hair out badly. That I just recently cut off 7-8 inches of hair to start with a healthy hair again. He proceeded to foil my entire head. I was then brought upstairs and when the stylist took the towel off I was shocked to see my hair had been died very blonde and was a almost full blonde! My heart sunk. The woman saw the look on my face and immediate asked, what? is it not right? To which I replied no this is very wrong. She rushed me downstairs and Michael came over and they said, it's okay we'll put toner on your hair and that will bring the blonde down. They did that, brought me back upstairs, and again my hair wasn't even remotely what I had asked for and now I was devastated about the damage I knew all the bleaching had done to my hair after I spent a year trying to repair it and sacrificed a lot of length to start fresh with undamaged hair just four months ago. Back downstairs I went, while Michael was nice it was obvious he was frustrated with me not being happy at this point. Another colourist came over, asked me what the problem was (she was very nice), and I showed her the photos and she looked at my hair and agreed it wasn't right. She advised Micheal put low lights in my hair with foils to break up all the light coloured hair. Michael did this and I was brought back upstairs. I had my blowout and they asked me if I liked it and I said it was better then when we started even though I wasn't happy because I had been there for five hours at this point and was going to miss my make-up application appointment if I didn't leave. Got home after and was getting ready for my appointment and was astonished to see that after three rounds of colour on my hair my greys were still showing! So this salon damaged my hair, didn't cover my greys and tried to sell me product when I left with a $366 bill; I was charged $225 not $205 but was so mad I said nothing just paid and left (including a 20% tip because I felt obligated to tip them after all the fuss even though I wasn't happy at all). Now recovering the damage to my dry hair will be at my own expense and while the colour I ended up with isn't horrible, it's not what I wanted and as it fades it will lighten because they bleached the crap out of it unnecessarily. This place is five star worthy. I had a terrible ombre done at another salon that left my hair looking like it was dip dyed platinum while my roots were dark brown. Not only were the staff here extremely accommodating (they squeezed me in within a day to recolour my hair) but they were also very friendly and I ended up receiving a free blow dry because of my ordeal! Everyone here is very knowledgeable and patiently explained everything they were going to do to my hair. Many people have quoted this place as expensive but they are only about 30-50 dollars more expensive then a mall salon so it's really not as bad as people think. If you want to go somewhere where they know what they're doing then this is the place! Always remember to bring lots of pictures that will help the stylist to better see what you'd like to accomplish. read more

(Prob a regular) my appt was running late, but when I met Sandra, I immediately forgot about my front desk experience. Sandra cut my badly damaged hair into a perfectly layered bob looking style. I have been getting my hair highlighted by Luis for 10 years now - he is the absolute best - what a find!. His personality suits mine perfectly in that he's not a big chatter box but he and I always have fun and nice conversations. Other times, there's not much to say and we are silent for a while. I will NOT be returning to Hair on the Avenue. I had a very nice experience the first time I booked a blow-out there. I booked for the following Saturday morning, prior to a wedding. On the Friday afternoon before my booking, I received a phone message cancelling my appointment! When I called to follow-up, the receptionist said that they had made a last-minute decision to close the salon the following day because there weren't enough bookings. I was completely left in the lurch. I will not be giving Hair on the Avenue my business again. This is particularly bad luck for this salon, as I live in the area and was on the market for a new hairstylist as my current person is about to start a maternity leave. I'm not a big 'yelper' but I have to say that my experience today at Medulla & Co was very aggravating. I can understand when people are running late or when scheduling mistakes are made, both of which happened today, but BOTH of the two women at the front desk were so rude and unapologetic about it, that they completely ruined my first experience at the salon. If either one of them had taken responsibility, had given me an explanation or apologized for the mistakes, I would completely understand. But they just stared at me as if somehow I was in the wrong for showing up to my appointment on time and just expected me to have all the time in the world to sit and wait for them. I had a mediocre experience here. I didn't love my colour - it was much darker and a different shade than what I had explicitly asked for - and the cost of the whole experience was $100 more than I had been quoted. At my previous salon there were so surprise charges for treatments or blow drying. I would definitely advise anyone going here to triple check the pricing as I wasn't advised that certain procedures they were doing (without asking) would cost extra and I'm no newbie to the salon world. Stacey Pollak, is Toronto's best kept secret for getting juicy, butter blond highlights. My hair was transformed to look rich but not brassy and natural looking with just enough buzz that makes you feel glam. Her highlights made my hair even healthier than when I first came in 3 yrs ago.
