First time taking the Megabus in my life. The bus showed up right on time which was great. There were alot of people which kind of took a while to load up. First stop was Madison then to do a drop off in St. Paul then Minneapolis. The initial bus driver was cool. Soft spoken gentleman that was really informative about what to expect on our route. There was an intermission point where we got to stop for a quick snack which was much appreciated and they had to swap out drivers. Most likely because the driver was about to go over his reccomended time. The second bus driver was a bit more grouchy from her vibe. You're never going to know what to expect when you're on the megabus. There's periods where select people want to be uncontrollably chatty. Crying babies etc. I do say the Megabus is better, cheaper than taking a plane. No issues walking to area, dealing with TSA, etc. I would reccomend read more

Pros: Clean reliable transportation, free wifi [though my phone never seemed to work consistently with it - and it wasn't strong enough to stream music or video], power outlet at every seat, double decker panoramic view Cons: The boarding process is abysmal. I don't like feeling like a herd of cattle.The only way to alleviate the 'mad crush' is to perhaps set up ropes and have everyone get in a doggone single file line. I'm sure that's not gonna happen so you have to deal. A friend gave me a tip: if you can, pack light and just take a carry on. That way you can avoid the mass herd trying to check their bags and already be in line to board. Still, you have to be sharp, alert and stand your ground, because certain species of the human race have no concept of courtesy and will try at any opportunity to skip or as we used to say 'bogard' [I don't think that's an actual word, lol] their way in front of everybody. Wear something warm or bring a blanket because they keep it frigid. Recommend bringing a small pillow too. read more

Megabus was okay. This was my first time riding it, and I took it from Chicago to Detroit - we took Amtrak on the way down because I had a voucher from a previous ride that I wanted to use. The Chicago bus stop is a little in the middle of nowhere but when we arrived via Lyft, they had a sign that said "Megabus line up here" and also the bus was already there, which of course helped, ha. We took it to the Wayne State Detroit bus stop and there are NO signs there - my boyfriend got there a little early to pick me up and wasn't sure where to wait. You could also choose to take it to Ann Arbor (State St. commuter lot) or to the Rosa Parks transit center. My friend and I are both curvy girls, and originally we wanted to sit by each other but it was a little uncomfortable, space-wise, so I ended up moving across the aisle. There are plugs to charge your phones, tablets, etc. during the ride, but hers did not work so she ended up using mine. Megabus promised WiFi but I had the foresight to download a few Netflix movies before my trip ... there was WiFi but it was locked and no one offered us the password. We paid $37.50 with fees for a one-way Megabus ticket which isn't too bad, though another friend got his ticket for $10 each way (Thursday to Monday, whereas we came back on a Sunday). For $40 or less I'd take Megabus again, but Amtrak was much more comfortable and had a bathroom toilet that actually flushes (theirs was just a seat with some Purell for you to use later, and no sink). Also, we arrived in Ann Arbor early, and for some reason we had to wait an extra 10-15 minutes ... the driver said if they are ahead of schedule they have to wait. Strange. read more

My first and last time riding the Megabus. Terrible experience. Rude Bus Drivers. I was warned from a friend that the people riding the bus would be the headache. No indeed. It was the rude drivers. The bus broke down coming back to Chicago. The driver told us it would be an half an hour before another bus would show up. Well it didn't. We were on a cold bus in the middle of the express way. Trucks were flying by shaking the bus. We were on that bus for 6 1/2 hours before a local bus driver came to rescue us. Everyone on the bus was trying to call Customer Service with no luck. Please don't waste your money or time with riding the Megabus. It's sad that customer service won't even help you. Unprofessional and rude staff. I'm not sure why they are still in business. I decided to take a trip back to my hometown, Cincinnati, to visit some friends and family this weekend. I had the option of renting a car, purchasing a flight, or taking the bus. Out of pure laziness and not wanting to drive, I chose the bus over the flight because it was cheaper. I also read about the amenities and "experience" on the website and thought, why not give t a try? Can't be too bad right? WRONG!! 1. I was expecting this big blue & CLEARLY LABLED double decker bus. Instead, a old, white, lakefront bus pulled up. I was HIGHLY confused. It showed up at the same time the megabus was supposed to, but it wasn't a megabus so I figured, no way! To my dismay, I quickly learned that the old white lakefront bus would be taking me back to Cincinnati. I paid $100 for an old white bus that wreaked of BO and old stale skating ring carpet!! FUMES! 2. The on bus experience was nothing that was promised. No wifi, no outlets, unflattering in appearance, and God forbid I have to go to the restroom! 3. The driver was rude. Completely lacked customer service skillls. When asked questions, since megabus is so vague when it comes to the itinerary/stops, he ignored the passengers questions. When he finally did respond he did so in a very rude and demeaning way. It made me feel super uncomfortable and honestly made me second guess his legitimacy. & who did they hire to drive this bus again?? Well lesson learned! Next time I won't be so cheap/ lazy. Don't, just Don't!!! I typically take the mega bus from chicago to Indianapolis and back. The first couple times last year, it was great. But the last 4 times or so that I have taken the bus the experience has been absolutely dreadful. In my last two bus rides: - The bus driver has forgotten to close the luggage doors before driving, losing some of the passengers luggage on the road. - Arrived 50 minutes late, leaving customers waiting in the rain (this isn't even the first time I've seen a mega bus this late, last time it was when it was -10 F outside.) - The Driver drove extremely slow, like 55 mph on a 70 mph interstate. This added at least 30 minutes The worst part is their customer service is designed to make it incredibly difficult to figure what is going on or get a refund. If you ask why the bus is late all they can tell you is that it will arrive in 5 minutes and to call back later, and they will continue doing that until the bus comes, or they will drop your call. If you even mention the word refund or compensation they will immediately transfer you, or put you on hold. Once you get off hold they will do the same again. Just to add icing to the cake here, all the amenities on their website is falsely advertised or misleading. Very few buses have the amenities on their website, and I would say 90% of the time you will not get one of those buses. So your bus may not have outlets or wifi and even if it does the wifi connection is extremely sub-par, you will get less than 2 mbps. If you did get outlets, they often don't put out enough power to charge your phone. Mega bus use to be good, but their service has been trash for a while now. I highly doubt they will have any customers left by the end of the year. read more

This is the second time I am reviewing megabus. They continuously disappoint. Last time was an entirely different issue where they left me at the rest stop and I am not going to get into details but was an example of bad customer service from then till the point where they I ended up calling everyday and they lost my luggage. This time was another example of bad customer service! I was taking the bus from Chicago to Cincinnati and it was pouring in Chicago. The bus got their well in advance and so did a lot of passengers but they wouldn't open the doors in the bus to let the people in who were already there and let all of us drench in the rain. How difficult is it to be considerate and start onboarding a little earlier and helping people out considering the weather conditions? There were families, kids and there is no share or awning for anyone to wait under and not get soaked in the rain. This was plain inconsiderate and bad customer service which is why I am giving them one star! read more

I've been a Megabus rider for nearly ten years, taking it from several times a year to and from Chicago. It used to be great - cheap, clean, professional drivers, and usually reliable. My busses now are almost always charters. Drivers are rude and sometimes dangerous (one memorable ride involved passangers screaming at the driver to stop the bus before he drove into stopped traffic on the highway - twice). The Chicago stop has moved with time into more and more dangerous areas. The driver on the bus I'm currently riding told us the bus was broken down earlier, but may have just not known how to start it (the problem was "fixed" within minutes). We're now at an unscheduled rest stop and don't know why. I don't really leave one-star reviews, but I'm starting to think this company is no longer providing safe travel. If you're able to make any choice other than Megabus, I implore you to do it. If this guy manages to get us back to Chicago, it'll be the last time I step off a Megabus. read more

Took the Megabus to Cincinnati for work this past winter. When flights were $500 from Chicago to Cincinnati how does one save the company a little cheddar? Ride the Megabus! My bus ride was 1/10th the price of a flight and was enjoyable for the most part. The bus was on time at 8am and allowed us to hop on early to keep warm. Yes, waiting on South Canal in the middle of a street without a permanent sign is a little sketchy. I'm not sure why Megabus does not have a permanent presence at Union Station or even a permanent sign at the South Canal boarding. The bus was pretty empty on the way to Indy, Cincinnati, (then Columbus), and allowed us to stretch out and get some work done. We stopped along the way for food and the driver was super professional. The ride back was hella crowded, as it was a Friday. There were a ton of annoying Louisville B-Ball fans at Tourney time that were coming to Chicago for vacation, yet seemed to talk about nothing but Louisville and U of Kentucky B-ball. When the Megabus is crowded it's not as fun! Still, a super-affordable option for short travel in the Midwest! read more

As the current duchess of the Chicago Megabus I felt inclined to write a review. I currently live in Cleveland and visit Chicago often. Megabus is quite a bit cheaper than paying for gas and tolls. I've also taken the Chicago--Minneapolis route a few times. Overall, I have few complaints. The price is right, the drivers are usually nice (though I tend to end up with the ones who think they are comedians and almost abuse their microphone privileges), and the passengers are MOSTLY college students and random families who are respectful enough. There is, though, ALWAYS that one person who decides it is okay to listen to their music WITHOUT headphones VERY LOUDLY. And it is usually rap. I can't think of a Megabus ride where this has not happened, so it is not the exception--and none of my bus drivers have ever asked any specific passenger to turn down their music. For that reason, I suggest coming prepared with your own set of headphones. The Megabus always stops somewhere along the way, usually a rest stop. I'm not too crazy about McDonalds so I try to bring my own food. Outlets are hit or miss. They usually work but I have been on a bum bus or two that has left me with a dying phone, etc. Lastly, I have met some interesting people on the Megabus...mostly in a good way. I'd largely recommend it if you are trying to save some $$$. read more

This has happened to us TWICE now. These experiences really do not justify their price increase to $41 tickets they charge each way to Des Moines from Chicago. I have mixed feelings on the Megabus. It was super cheap so it was worth it. The first driver on a Saturday taking us from Louisville to Chicago was a complete jerkwad who immediately treated us all like criminals. I understand they probably deal with so much crap, but there's absolutely no need to yell at people and to make them feel like they're in prison. The guys who took us home were a lot nicer, but I was a bit scared because I felt like the speed was way too fast for a double decker bus. And I froze the entire trip. Megabus used to be my favorite way to get around the Midwest but this service has been completely ruined. Every time I take it, it's been worse and worse, but my last experience was so bad that I think I'm done. I was traveling from Madison, WI to Chicago and had purchased my ticket online in advance. When the bus arrived at the Park and Ride pick up where I was waiting, I was told that there was no room for me. No explanation or apology, just "there's not a seat for you on this bus regardless of your reservation." I was told to wait because another bus was coming. When the next bus arrived at the Park and Ride, I explained my situation and asked the bus driver if this was the bus I was waiting for. She said yes but that we were going to the other Madison pick up (near the University) to get more passengers before leaving. That was frustrating since I was already delayed, but what could I do? I got on her bus. Big mistake. When I got to the University stop, I was told that the driver was wrong and that I should NOT have gotten on her bus because there was another bus on the way to the Park and Ride to get me. Because of this, I had to wait for over an hour while they sold tickets to additional passengers, boarded everyone, and then switched drivers. I contacted Megabus to ask what the hell had happened and to request a refund, and waited over two weeks for a response. Then the response I got completely misrepresented the situation. Even after several emails back and forth the customer service representative kept saying things like, "Upon your email that you provided you were able to travel on the correct service however, was delayed almost an hour due to a change of driver. As per the previous email we have been advised the bus you needed to travel on was 45 minutes late." This is both confusing and untrue. The bus I ended up on left a full hour and 20 minutes after my scheduled time, and I absolutely was on on the 'correct' bus." They also offered no explanation for why there wasn't a set for me on the bus I'd purchased a ticket for, and referred to an internal compensation policy as the reason I could not get a refund, but wouldn't share that policy or any details of what qualifies one for a refund with me. I've ridden the Megabus probably ten or twelve times over the years, once round trip to Indianapolis, the rest to Milwaukee. Let's set a baseline for the review: it's a bus. Buses are the lowliest form of intercity transport. (OK, perhaps getting picked-up by sociopath serial killers is more-lowly, but those sources of rides just change hands too frequently to review). There will not be railroad crossing lights allowing you priority as you whisk towards your destination. There will be no wide reclining seats. There won't be carry-on luggage space. That having been said, my experience with Megabus has been superb. I've nearly always arrived on time, and if I haven't it's been an unavoidable traffic- and/or weather-related issue. It's also as fast as a car, because it goes express from city to city. The seats (for a bus) are comfortable, and they even have an electrical outlet for each passenger and Wi-Fi that is fast-enough for pretty much everything but video streaming. The Wi-Fi was unreliable in my experience when they started offering it, but in my last several rides I've had no problems. The Megabus terminal in Chicago is a curb on the sidewalk a half block south of Union Station. When I'm usually only paying $10 - $12 each way to Milwaukee (half the price of Amtrak), I have no problem with that. Once, when it was very cold and the bus hadn't yet arrived, they had a warming bus to sit in while we waited. (They do use the very nice Greyhound/Amtrak terminal in Milwaukee now.) Megabus makes it very easy to pay and ride--all you need is a payment card to order either on their mobile or regular website, and they immediately text you your confirmation to show to the driver--no chance of losing it (and if you do, you have bigger problems, because you just lost your phone!!!). It's a MUCH better system than Greyhound (but that would be another story: http://goo.gl/bQ9REE), and it's primarily quiet college kids riding, making it civilized. I also like sitting on top of the double-decker for the better view. Unfortunately, there are only two Megabus trips per day from Chicago to Milwaukee now, which forced me to take a Greyhound in one direction. I'm guessing that is because you can get very cheap, express buses from Greyhound too. But the experience is "less than," as they say. All in all, I'd much rather sit on a bus than drive; because I never need a car in Milwaukee anyway. read more

You know, I used to like Megabus when it came to travelling between Chicago + Ann Arbor (and back). But it's just gotten shittier. I often choose Amtrak and *opt* to pay the higher prices just to avoid Megabus. Previous experiences with heavily delayed buses (over an hour, especially when leaving Chicago) and one that didn't even show up where we had to fight customer service about where the hell their bus was(they didn't know for over 4 hours past the trip) They no longer use double decker buses(which I loved). The stop is way off in no man's land off Polk that has *no* cover whatsoever and is pretty deserted (apart from being next to a gentleman's club). That's in Chicago. The buses are just glorified Greyhound buses. At least with Greyhound you get coverage while waiting for your bus. From Ann Arbor the stop is much less creepy since you're outside a mall but you're still out in no man's land of a parking lot. It's just a shame to see how crappy they've gotten. Bought a megabus ticket from South bend IN to Chicago IL. Unfortunately, after waiting 2 hours for a bus that didnt show, calling the customer support line multiple times asking for more information on my bus, I was instructed to keep calling back every 10 minutes by the representatives. They appears to lose the bus in the Shadow Realm, because their GPS department could not find the bus, and it never arrived. Upon asking for a refund, megabus instructed that I would not be compensated for services not rendered. Take that whichever way you want, but I would be be receiving any refund for lack of service. Will no longer be using megabus, and would highly recommend alternative routes to any and all family and friends. read more

Awful, awful, AWFUL! Booked my trip to O'Hare 2+ days in advance. 4:05 a.m. departure. Got up early, arrived at the stop in plenty of time, waited 45 minutes before calling to see where the bus was. Was on hold FOREVER & was finally told the bus had been cancelled. Never got a call or text or email from these fools in advance so that I could make other arrangements. A family member was forced to drive me the 2 hours to the airport as the next bus would not have gotten me to the airport in time. I will NEVER use Megabus or recommend it to anyone EVER! They are IMPOSSIBLE to get on the phone (was on hold forever), so I contacted my credit card company & successfully disputed the charge for this service I never received. Megabus is my superstar! I used megabus (again) for my thrid trip to Indianapolis last week! The bus is clean ... driver is always friendly....and the best part is their very very cheap tickets! It costs me only $2.50 to indianapolis and believe it or not this is round trip!!! The driver told us that they already reached their break even point. Plus they just got 8 new buses for more frequent schedule. I hope that they will stick with same great service @ low cost! Tips: Plan early then you can pay as low as $2.50 round trip! If you have flexible schedule, plan to go during weekdays for less passengers! (Last wednesday I was on the bus with other 4 passengers!!! AWESOME!!) The attendant is surly and won't tell us why there are two buses around the corner and not servicing the 50 people waiting. The bus from Ann Arbor to Chicago was ramshackle filthy, loss and freezing. For many years we used to routinely take the Megabus between Des Moines and Chicago, and I recommended this service to numerous family and friends. Now I'm embarrassed at having done so, because a few years ago, the midwest service no longer uses the MegaBuses between certain cities, so the Des Moines Chicago loop uses a bus run by Windstar, yet you still purchase through Megabus and pay the Megabus prices and have a Megabus ticket. However, the Windstar buses have no tables, extremely limited legroom, no outlets, no space for bags, cups, nothing whatsoever for the long trip, extremely rude and terrifying drivers who pride themselves on a single, very short stop between Des Moines and Chicago where they hope to leave as many passengers as possible behind. It's unfortunate that Megabus chose to go from such a fantastic option between the cities with great service to such absolute garbage. We won't travel with them again. read more

Might be the worst service I've received anywhere. The bus broke down leaving in the morning and we had to wait an hour and a half for them to bring out a new bus and we were very late to where we needed to go. Then on the way back it was over an hour late picking us us - we had timed it out so we wouldn't be waiting outside in the cold but nope. Then when the bus showed up we brought up the fact that he was 70-80 minutes late and he told us we say anything else we're off the bus. I can't believe I paid for this bus. ZERO STARS. I skimmed through most of the one star megabus reviews and they all cover my exact sentiments and/or experiences w megabus. I could write an entire story detailing my terrible, horrible experience w a No-show bus, the lying and incapable customer service I called twice to ask for bus status updates whom both times told me the bus was late and to keep waiting at the stop, but then 50 mins later told me the bus had already left at 5:05pm. After I told her that was impossible Bc I was at the stop by 5:02pm, she comes back from a lengthy "Hold" to tell me the bus left at 5:02pm. WUT. How convenient that the data she is reading off of a screen adjusted the time the bus arrived/left to when I said I had arrived at the stop. If the bus truly had left at 5:02pm, which is when I called the first of three times to ask for bus status, Why wouldn't you have told me it left? Why would you say that it was 14 minutes away? Why use that exact number? And why tell me the bus hasn't arrived yet the following two times I called?! I don't need to reiterate how worthless and customer-UNfriendly megabus policies and services are as they lie to benefit themselves so that they don't have to refund or exchange your ticket. I don't have to tell you that if you ask to speak to a supervisor, she will word-vomit the ridiculous megabus policies while you continue to explain/ request help and promptly hang up the phone on you with out fear of retribution. Their customer service and policies are a farce and a formality. Clearly, they have no desire to retain customers or improve their services. I was very worried after reading these reviews, and am happy to say that I did NOT experience barely any of the problems others did. There IS wifi. There IS an outlet for your phone. There IS a bathroom, that isn't terrible & both my drivers were nice. The only thing I can agree on is where the stop is for Chicago (Polk st). There is literally no place to be covered, no bathroom, no pickup for rideshares, and not super safe. If this is changed, I'd have nothing bad to say. I'd give 1 star for customer support. It's like you are talking to a robot, reading off a screen. You will definitely never be able to speak to a manager either. The fares are better than greyhound, so I'd say try it out. This is the worst experience I ever had. We had 5 customers waited for the megabus to get back to Michigan from Chicago . We waited for 1 hour there was still no Bus coming. We called the service center , they are so rude! Finally a guy told us it was not a " traditional megabus" but a "substitute bus", and it left an hour ago!!!! We were supposed to look for the other type of bus !!! We were all shocked that there was no sign in front of the bus saying that, how are we suppose to know that??!!! I started complain to the manager they she hang up in me ! I call back again another guy hung up on me again! Three times !!! I swear to god I am not kidding . We had no choice, they just left us here , without even providing a solution !!! Btw she told me it was my fault because I should keep checking my email for notice !!! I've taken Megabus from Chicago to Detroit roughly once a month for the past four years. As many before me have said, "You get what you pay for." If I could, I would give it 3.5 stars. Pros: Its !Cheap!, clean, you can plug in your phone or laptop (provided you're not expecting to browse the web the entire duration of the trip) and 95% of the time you'll arrive at your location within 1-2 hours of the scheduled time....sometimes you even get there right AT the scheduled time....unlike the more-expensive Amtrak where your arrival time is a complete mystery to both passengers and the crew, or Greyhound where you make 15 stops along the way. If its temperatures are extreme they'll post a bus at the stop w/ the AC or Heat on while you wait. Otherwise you're on your own...don't expect anyone to hold your hand or kiss your behind. This is efficient, budget ground travel. If your goal is to get where you're going, Megabus does that job very well. Cons: No station, just an uncovered spot on the sidewalk...sometimes there are luggage and check-in attendants, sometimes there aren't....sometimes there are hobos and junkies pestering you; sometimes one of them gets confrontational and decides to punch you (this happened to me in January of '08), so you have to break his nose and make him bleed all over the sidewalk before he will go away ....OFTEN the bus is late to arrive, but usually by no more than 20-30 minutes.....OFTEN the driver is nice, funny even, but sometimes its clear that his/her life is a shambles.... If you're an agoraphobic snob who doesn't like people and expects a luxury travel experience for less than the cost of the gas it takes to drive a car from Chicago to Detroit, PLEASE don't take the Megabus, or any form of public transit for that matter. No one is going to bring you peanuts or a pillow. Yes, those college kids might be talking a lot, but your whining is 10000x more annoying. read more

Pros: 1) price. 2) availability (got seats 2 days before the trip), choice of doing one-way fares (some companies force you to buy round trip tickets even if you only want one-way). 3) you can sleep/relax the entire way, no worries about paying attention to the road like you do if you're driving yourself. Cons: 1) wifi is a joke - it lets you log in but the speed was so painful that everyone switched to cell data. And even with no one on the wifi it still was slow. 2) we were only able to get those seats with the table. So they directly face another pair of people. That was really awkward and it was a fight for leg room. And it was people looking directly at you for literally hours. 3) it's a limited number of stations. So we took a trip into Detroit. It was 45 mins away for my ride to come get us. 4) the pickup area in Chicago is kind of random so just ask and make sure you're at the right spot. It was raining on the day we went so we took shelter at the dunkin donuts across the street so we had to pay extra attention. I'll probably use them again but only for medium trips where the station isn't too far from the final destination. I'm prepared for lack of wifi and I'll try to reserve seats. We are breaking up. -You're never on time. Ever. -You've spread your cheap love to everyone and now you are constantly packed. I need two seats; one for me, one for me when I want to stretch. -You stop at the WORST rest stop ever between Chicago and Cleveland. Red Burrito? Hardee's? WTF?! At least stop at the one with Sbarro and Burger King! -You advertise that you have WiFi but you never. have. WiFi. How in God's name am I supposed to work, study, or find other ways to ignore everyone else on the trip? And the people you let on? Wow. This last trip I had the pleasure of sitting in front of Sir Snores Like a Dying Cow and two ladies who thought it was funny to take videos of themselves talking loudly about nothing and making awkward animal sounds and then playing it back to themselves over and over. Bitches, it wasn't funny the first time, and the last 26x weren't either. I am glad the outlet in your seat does not work and, no, I am not letting you use mine. Wow, where do I start with this one. I've taken this bus almost 50 times in the past four years, as it was the main way I got to and from Chicago and Cleveland for school. My parents unfortunately insisted that I take it, as it was way cheaper than a flight. You get what you pay for, however. It was a better deal when they were just starting out. I used to book my tickets a month in advance and get a round-trip for $20. Now it would be about $60. The bus has rarely been on time for me either. It always leaves at least 10 minutes late. Once it arrived 30 minutes late in 20 degree weather. The costumer service rep said she couldn't do anything until it surpassed the 30 minute mark. Some help. That's also another issue-the customer service. Don't bother using the Contact Us feature on the website. They won't ever reply. I have had trips where the bus broke down for a few hours, and the driver didn't tell us anything about what was going on. I tried to get a refund, but was put on hold for 90 minutes. No one will ever pick up the phone. The bus drivers are usually very rude, and want nothing to do with the passengers. Sometimes they load your luggage, sometimes they don't and make you do it yourself. Whenever they unload, they half throw your bags on the ground. I don't recommend putting fragile items in the trunk. The seat themselves aren't too bad. Pray you get two to yourself, or at least the person in front of you doesn't recline. Thank god they put outlets on the bus. Those are a life-saver. Also, if you're booking for the free wi-fi, don't. It barely ever works. If it does, it'll be for around 10-15 minutes tops. You can't access websites like Youtube or Netflix either. On my trips, they have a food stop. They just recently started changing up where they stopped, thank god. I would say if you have no other travel options, then this will do. It's much better than the Greyhound, but still an annoying, unprofessional bus service. I did it! I rode the Megabus! This travel-cheaply fad from the UK has finally arrived in the States and Chicago is right at the center of its US takeover. With other enterprising transport options like Ryan Air and Easy Jet, Megabus has been transporting those blokes in The United Kingdom cheaply for years. (In England they even have a double decker Megabus. )They use the old school method of supply and demand, but they use it when pricing every seat. Which means that seats can go for anywhere from $1 - $30 depending on the demand. My round trip to St. Louis cost $35.50 total including tax. That's less than gas and more economical. It took 5 hours to get there and we stopped in Bloomington for a 20 minute break. There is a bathroom on the bus which was great and the bus was only half full which meant I got a seat to myself. The bus driver was nice and we listened to XRT on the radio. I had my video ipod so I didn't do too much listening. The drive was great, we didn't run into any traffic and I got to sleep most of the way. Way better than driving and way better than taking the stupid train. I was driving out of chicago on 90e when a megabus merged into my car at 60mph pushing me into the concrete barrier. One of my front wheels was destroyed and the other side of my car was severely dented. I also sustained whiplash injury and hit my head on the wheel. THE BUS DID NOT STOP. The police said since they didnt know which bus it was and they didnt stop there was nothing they could do. I would advise not to ride with these dangerous criminals. read more

I have taken the Megabus three times, and even though I have never gotten the mythical $1 fares the cost is pretty cheap! The bus is always late, but when dealing with traffic that's kind of a given. You're riding on a bus so it's not exactly comfortable and it's always packed. This recent trip was to St. Louis for Thanksgiving weekend. Traveling on the busiest travel day of the year wasn't easy, but they had some type of system going on. I checked in at a table instead of just boarding the bus with my confirmation number. Also, I was given a yellow tag that said St. Louis on it. The traveling wasn't great, but at least everyone was well behaved and quiet. There is always a half hour break at a Truck Stop to get some food and stretch your legs. As a bonus, our bus driver played The Sand Lot on our second leg of the trip and that just made me smile. read more

Took it from Chicago to Indy and back this weekend. Friendly drivers, clean buses. The ride there was perfect - the bus was only half full. The ride back was cramped, the bus was full, but it was clean and we got in on time. The only down side is that they don't provide an indoor waiting area, so when you're waiting at Union Station you have to wait outside (though they make exceptions in extreme weather.) The stop in Indy is between the jail and the county building, and they won't let you stand inside there, either. Other than that, it's a great service. Do a google search for discount codes before you buy, you might find an even better deal. read more

You will find a wide variety of reviews on here because Megabus is indeed an unabashedly mediocre service. The buses tend to be craptastic and one certainly must NOT depend on any sort of timely or friendly service. The point is: you get what you pay for. The reason I'm giving Megabus a full Three Stars is, for all of its drawbacks, the damned thing is simple and CHEAP! To assist those who may be new to this, allow me to offer... ~~Chuck's Top Five Things to Know When Considering Megabus~~ 1. Book Early, Book Online One of the recent reviews on here mentions how Megabus is actually comparable in price to Greyhound. This should not be the case. Once again, the point is that this is a very inexpensive service. The earlier you book, the less expensive the tickets are. Literally. Book as far in advance as you can and you can even score a $1 rate! **Special Note** You can ONLY book reservations online and in advance so don't even think about trying to show up and pay a bus driver. It simply does not work that way. 2. Temper Your Expectations Again, cheap rate = crappy service. If this isn't cool with you, don't use it. Come in with this in mind and you'll be fine. 3. Be Informed One of the ways that Megabus keeps its rates down is by picking up and dropping off near (but not at) many major transportation centers. This makes for very odd and nontraditional connection points (which are nearly always poorly marked with ambiguous signage - if any). Be certain you check your reservation on the Megabus website as close to your trip as possible because sometimes these pickup and drop off points change and that's the only way you'll know! 4. Put Away Your Watch It's cheap for a reason. Expect pickups as early as 30 minutes before scheduled and -- more likely -- up to 2 hours late. 5. Do NOT Forget The Paperwork! Perhaps most important of all: don't ever, evereverEVER roll up into the Megabus driver's grill without 'cho papers, yo. In all seriousness. Don't even try it! Think of it this way: it's a reservation service (albeit an extremely low-end one). Since tickets are purchased online, the printed receipt displaying your long, complicated reservation code is the ONLY indication the driver has that you're seat claim is legit. A loyal Megabus customer for three year now, I've had enough. In summary, my main concerns from my most recent round-trip: -A driver that hit a light pole in downtown Chicago and kept going like it was nothing. -4+ hour delays and no updates or explanations -Rude customer service and drivers. Needless to say, even the dollar rides are not worth it. I gave up on waiting in my 5:20pm bus from Indy to Chicago because the only information the crappy customer service could give me was that our bus was stalled an hour outside of Louisville at 7:45pm. Megabus just lost a very loyal customer that will recommend all friends and family steer clear of this dishonest, incompetent, poorly run business. read more

The only company out there that tells their customer service this script 1) if the bus doesn't show up to a location at the scheduled time tell the customer that the driver hasn't turned on the GPS and we have no clue where the bus is 2) put the customer on long hold periods and then tell them to call back in an hour 3) tell the customer that unless they want to buy s second ticket that you must terminate the call 4) tell the customer that megabus regrets that they can't pick you up but feel free to email us read more

I rode the Megabus from Cincinnati to Chicago to save money on fuel, not pay for parking at a hotel and just to relax on the ride. This Megabus was a nicer one, although to plug in electronics one has to take off the plug cover. The bus was also a bit dirty when I sat down in my seat. The driver was polite and did his best and we even got back to Cincinnati early. On my next trips up to Chicago, I will ride the Megabus because it's a steal, and I can just relax and not worry about driving. read more
