My husband and I just found out about Damion's passing here on Yelp after reading the latest reviews. My husband has been a client of Damion's for probably about 5 years, and my 6 year old son had just started to go. My husband had been trying to get in touch the last week or so to make an appointment and finally felt something was up when he didn't hear back. Fidning out this news is devastating. Not only was Damion a talented barber (best I've ever had - quoting my husband) but my husband says he was a great man who loved his daughter, wife and family more than anything. I've been a client of Damion for the last two years+ and I have to say he was the most professional barber I ever had the opportunity to get a cut from. He was never late, cut me exactly how I wanted and he would end your visit with, "Go on out there and be some somebody." I hadn't cut my hair in a few months so I decided to try to find a good barber that had some photos of customers online so I knew they were legit (as opposed to my usual practice of going to the cheapest place close to me). I also was feeling a little self conscious about being a White guy going into a Black barbershop. I would have done well to heed Ta-Nehisi Coates' incisive instruction: White dudes. If you have green money. You can go to a black barbershop. it just FEELS like everyone's looking at you. But they aren't. Anyways, Damion had great reviews and his website made it easy to book an appointment for the next day, so I went for it. I roll in five minutes late and immediately he starts talking smack. It's all good-natured though, and I was indeed five minutes late, so I'm feeling relaxed. I sit down and he asks what I want. I never know what kind of haircut I want because 1) I'm indecisive; and 2) I still have yet to master the intricate array of numbers and adjectives that comprise haircut terminology. I give him some half-assed answer and he tells me, That doesn't really make sense, just describe what you're looking for. I describe it and he says, Alright, I got you. He jumps right into it and I quickly see my hair falling off around me. I'd just moved to Oakland so I'm asking him for his thoughts, advice, etc. and he's got it all. He knows the East Bay super well and he even has the full collection of Warriors bobbleheads. We got to know each other a bit and I told him of my recent dating struggles. It also happened to be May 4th, so we talked about Star Wars. According to Damion, season 3 of The Mandalorian is better than season 2 but worse than season 1. He says watch it, and I will. Finally, the haircut is done. I get up close to the mirror to inspect. It's a little shorter than I had envisioned, but Damion knew what he was doing. It's sharp. Ooooooh baby, he says. Some get made that he is not able to do walk-in clients but for those of us that are professionals with busy standards and high quality expectations the appointment only policy is perfect. Finding a good barber who is skilled, professional, and consistent has been quite the feat for me (and likely you), so when I came across all the amazing reviews about Damien at Megah Brown's here on Yelp, I was open. I mean, when everyone else has failed at hitting the mark, what did I have to lose by giving Damien a try? It was a Wednesday morning when I booked for the coming Friday, and let me just say, great man, great shop, and great barber! Aesthetically, I love the quaint, cozy, loft-feel of the shop with exposed brick and all. Damien put love and warmth into it, and it shows. Energetically, there's peace and flow, a reflection of someone who's a good someone, which he is. Once in the chair, there was varied conversation where laughter and depth met familiarity. They always say you write a review for two reasons. Either extremely horrible service. Or top tier amazing over the top service where you have to scream it to the heavens "OMG they were amazing." Sadly I've experienced the latter over the past 7 years and haven't blessed this man with a review. Shame on me . In 2014 my old barber was consistently busy. I'm talking 4,5,6hr waits at times. I needed a cut BAD and I randomly looked on Yelp and megah browns was #1. 5 stars, a bunch of reviews. Figured I'd try him out. He was appointment only which would help me greatly. PROS: - LOCATION! I work near Lake Merrit and this shop is only 3 blocks away from work! - EXPERIENCE! I decided to get my haircut from Damion, the only barber there, due to yelp and Google reviews stating he is one of the best barbers around. I booked an appointment with him and I couldn't have been more satisfied! Little did I know, this guy has over 16 years of experience cutting hair in barbershops and salons! - CONVENIENCE! New to town and in need of a haircut, Damion booked me the next day and around my lunch time schedule! No more weekend cuts for me. - SOCIAL! Knowing he is the only one running the shop, you get that 1 on 1 convo. He is a social guy who loves his job and enjoys chatting up his customers. Noone needs a grumpy dude cutting their hair. - DIFFERENT! There are barbers everywhere but not all barbers are good at cutting different types of hair and hairstyles. What a trash barber, I don't know why I went here for so long or why there's so many good reviews, maybe he puts laughing gas in the sheen you get sprayed with after the cut or something, but I'm sure as hell glad that I don't come here no more! He said he takes appointments by text, but when I would text him I got no response, and when I would finally call him after a couple of attempts at reaching him by text he would finally arrange something, but be super rude like my business was a nuisance for him! His cuts themself were also mega garbage my goodness. I would always show up to my appointment on time, but he would still be taking his sweet time with the person before me until he finally started cutting me like 15 minutes after my appointment time, and then would have the nerve rush through my cut so that he could start cutting the next client after me on time! My cut wasn't even that hard, just a simple tapered fade with a line, but he couldn't even blend it right! Had me looking like I was wearing a Russian winter hat or something, I'd post a picture of just how bad it was, but there's a lot of beautiful women on here and I CANNOT have them looking at me like that, no way my guy! I'm also not trying to have no Alaskan real estate agencies spamming my inbox asking if I'm interested in any igloo vacancies, no thanks. I mean dude wasn't always an a**hole to be fair, sometimes he would be cool, but he was super moody in general, sometimes I felt like I should've just left him a box of chocolates, a Snuggie, and a Friends DVD or something and leave him alone in the shop to cry and let his feelings out or something. This attitude just wasn't towards me either, I remember him being super rude to the Yelp salespeople who would call him and other people who would also him simple questions in a way that he didn't like for no reason, what a baby, and I also remember that he had another barber in the shop at one point, but that other barber left his a** after like 3 weeks, and then he would have the nerve to complain about how hard it is to find another barber to work with him, geez. I mean I know that it was always a painful experience looking in the mirror at myself after he cut my hair, but he should look in the mirror and maybe he would find out why. Duh! Probably the best haircut I've ever got or at least that I can remember by. Damion is a really cool dude who knows how to cut my big ol head. I work down the street and I came into the shop pretty early, but he was busy so he said come swing by during my lunch. Come in and he goes in and like I said, nobody has cut my hair this well before. He also trimmed my beard and stache very cleanly. Line up was really smooth and taper was perfect. It's finally nice to have a go to spot to get a haircut that's very close to work. Dude is also a big sports fan and into good music. The price is more than what I usually pay at other spots, but its worth every penny to get cut by this man. I made an appt for my boyfriend to come in this Saturday and was a little nervous because he is really picky about the way his hair is cut. I read the reviews on here and knew that this was the place for him. Watching Damien cut his hair was like watching someone create a piece of art. He is so creative and you can tell he knows exactly how he wants the finished product to look. I was worried at first because I saw the way my boyfriends face looked and he didn't seem super happy, but by the end of it he was just as amazed as me. Moved back to Oakland in April of this year after going to the same amazing barber for the last 15+ years in Vallejo. Tried a few barbers prior to going to Megah Brown's with a variety of unfavorable results ranging from lack of good customer service to pervy behavior to just bad haircuts. Decided to check him out based on Yelp reviews after another disappointing barber experience in August and I now consider him my go to barber. I don't have to over-explain what I want and he gets me in and out in 30 minutes or less. He has been on time every appointment. Carries on great conversation and has a very clean, comfortable & nicely designed shop. It's also nice to be a woman alone in the shop with a man and feel perfectly safe. Got my locs maintained here by Gracie. I drive all the way from San Jose cuz Gracie is the only one I have found who respects my desire for natural hair care (adamantly against using wax or standard shampoos). She is fast at re-twisting and does a nice herbal rinse. I do wish she had more experience with styling but if I bring a picture she is able to replicate it. I also wish she did color. But I still highly recommend her for loc care. She always listens to what I want and is very gentle. Megah Browns is a very nice, friendly atmosphere and the owner is very sociable. read more

Okay, so BART was experiencing some delays and i made it to the chair by 9:02 (2 minutes late). With a mild side eye, he welcomed me to the shop, hung up my jacket and started working his magic. Megah transformed my hipster faded curly crop to a sleek wavy silhouette with trimmed beard for that rugged edge that i was going for in all of 45 minutes. I'm not really a fan of super wordy reviews that have more literary value than suggestive power (but hey - to each his/her own) so I'll keep mine straight to the point. 4 stars and here's why: * Quality of Service aka The Cut: (5/5) - 4 cuts by Megah and all were mostly on point. I mean, The man is an artist, a hair clippers ninja. * Price: (3/5) - Cuts are about $25 (including facial hair work) and generally what I've become used to on the Westcoast. Still, I can't say I understand why making a pretty low cut an even lower cut in what usually amounts to 30 minutes or less costs over $15-20 like what I've encountered on the Eastcoast. In other news, credit/debit cards are accepted for payment so that's a plus. * Timing/Wait Time: (5/5) - Appointments can be made beforehand (generally a good idea with any barber) and Megah has always been punctual and ready for my appoinment...even when I wasn't quite ready myself $) Also, seriously, dude has skills. He cuts fast and touches up with a razer, etc. in what feels like no time. *Ambiance: (3/5) - The shop is pretty small with a few chairs and couch and a single mounted TV and is located in the Uptown neighborhood of Oakland. I've been getting my haircut by the owner Damien for a few years now. I was having inconsistency issues with my previous barber which caused me to look else where. It is not an easy thing to look for a new barber. I was referred to him by a mutual friend and I've been with him ever since. I would describe his cutting style as versatile. I've seen many different people in his chair, ranging in age, gender and all different hair types. I usually get a tapper or low fade. Damien understood I am a working professional and tailored my cut not only to be presentable in a corporate setting but also help me keep a younger appearance. I like what he's done to the shop. This barber shop needs a tv down stairs so I can catch up on sports when I'm getting my haircut. Great haircut if not the best, and I have been to barbers everywhere. Found some common ground along the way and had a nice conversation. This guy is all about us the customer.
