I walked into this business expecting something extremely simple: I wanted my hair cut and styled in a way that looked good and matched what I had specifically asked for. I was not asking for anything impossible, outrageous, or unreasonable. I showed up expecting a normal appointment with a professional stylist, and I left wondering how something as simple as getting a haircut could go so unbelievably wrong. When I first arrived, I tried to remain optimistic. I figured maybe the salon was busy, maybe they were running behind, or maybe everyone was simply having a stressful day. I understand that businesses can get busy. I understand that appointments can take longer than expected. I understand that people have bad days. What I don't understand is how the entire experience could be handled so poorly from beginning to end. Essay 2 -- Waiting The first major problem was the waiting. Despite having an appointment, I ended up waiting much longer than I expected. Nobody seemed particularly interested in explaining what was happening or giving me an accurate estimate of how much longer I would have to wait. I wouldn't have been nearly as annoyed if someone had simply come over and said, "We're running behind today, we're sorry, and we'll get you taken care of as soon as possible." That's all it would have taken. Instead, I was left sitting there wondering whether anyone had even remembered that I had an appointment. When I finally got called back, I was already frustrated, but I decided to give the stylist the benefit of the doubt. I figured that the actual haircut would make up for the bad beginning. Unfortunately, I was very wrong. Essay 3 -- Explaining What I Wanted Before the haircut started, I explained exactly what I wanted. I tried to be as clear as possible because I know that communication is important when getting your hair done. I explained the length, the style, and the general appearance I was going for. I even made sure to answer questions when the stylist asked them. At this point, I thought everything was fine. Then the cutting started. Almost immediately, I began noticing that significantly more hair was being taken off than I had expected. I tried not to panic because I figured the stylist probably knew what they were doing and that the haircut would eventually come together. That turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes I made. Essay 4 -- The Haircut As the haircut continued, I became increasingly concerned. The stylist kept cutting, and every time I looked in the mirror, I became more confused. I kept thinking, Maybe it will look better when they're finished. Then more hair was cut. Maybe it will look better after they style it. Then even more hair was cut. Eventually, I realized that the haircut was simply not what I had asked for. There is a massive difference between asking for a particular hairstyle and receiving something completely different. Hair isn't like clothing where you can simply take it off and put something else on. Once the hair is cut, you have to live with it until it grows back. That is exactly why I believe hairstylists should take their customers' requests seriously. Essay 5 -- The Mirror Moment The moment the stylist finally turned the chair toward the mirror was honestly unbelievable. I stared at myself for several seconds because I wasn't even sure what I was looking at. I had walked into the salon with one hairstyle in mind and somehow walked out with something that looked completely different. The worst part was that the stylist seemed completely satisfied with the result. They asked me something along the lines of whether I liked it, and I honestly didn't know what to say. What exactly am I supposed to say at that point?
