I absolutely love the search for authentic Pakistani food and recently tried this place on a weekday for lunch. They were moderately busy when I went, which is always a good sign. Upon entering, I saw what looked like a buffet, but it was actually a display of the "cafeteria" style food you can order. I opted for a "plate" which was a very large tin dish that that holds an entrée and two sides, plus rice. The entrées they offered all looked great and they actually had Kofta Anday, which is meatballs with hard boiled egg in a curry. I've always loved this dish growing up and Mehran did an excellent job with it!! Their rice was also excellent, as was their yogurt mint chutney. For side dishes, I opted for aloo muttar and aloo saag and both were stunning! The saag was spot-on perfect! The spice level in all the dishes was perfect as well, which means it had a little kick to it. So, for $14.99 I got all this food plus a bread, in my case I asked for a roti, which was pretty good as well, but next time I'd go for a naan. There is something wonderful to be said about walking into a restaurant later at night, hungry as can be, and smelling the wonderful arrangement of aromas Mehran is filled with. The staff was wonderfully friendly in answering our questions as we stumbled in out of the cold. I imagine the dishes would taste amazing any day of the week, but with the snow still heavy on the ground each bite of warm chicken tikka masala and nauratan curry gave us the strength to venture back outside. It's a hole-in-a-wall right across the Whole Foods in Clarendon, but I'll have to say this is the best Pakistani food I've had in this area. You can get the food that is already prepared at the front (looks like buffet style, but it's not - it's more so a combo order of entree, rice, sides, etc.) or you can order at the counter (their menu is extensive and it was so hard for me to choose). I had a hard time choosing between the various curries and rice entrees. BONELESS CHICKEN BIRYANI - 12.99 There is a +2 in pricing compared to the CHICKEN BIRYANI, but the owner recommended the boneless. I have no regrets. I asked for regular spice, which was a good level for me. First of all, I loved that the rice was dry enough for me to distinguish each individual grain, which was packed with a lot of spices and flavor. It is good to eat alone without chicken, too! The chicken was also super delicious. There were a good amount of herbs, onions, and other toppings mixed in the biryani that provided each bite with so much bold flavors. I'd highly recommend. The portion size was large with lots of rice and still a good amount of chicken. If I didn't eat all my chicken so quickly, I definitely could have packed it home and made another meal out of it. My friend got CHICKEN CURRY and the couple bites I had were delicious. The chicken thigh meat was tender and the curry was scrumptious. The side of chickpeas she got were also tasty and she seemed to really enjoy the naan that came with her "combo" order. The biggest plus for me is the service here. The owner gave my friend and me some sweet basmati rice and chai on the house, which were both good. I was completely sold on the chai (didn't need to add any sugar either) as the chai was fragrant and the milk's slight hint of sweetness provided more than enough flavor for me. I really liked the simplicity and am sold on ordering one for myself in the future. I'll be back to Mehran very soon. This was a shocker of a place. It's a hole in the wall type of place next to Whole Foods on the opposite end of the Apple, Pottery Barn, and Crate and Barrel. I didn't think too much about this place until someone recommended this place to me. As for the inside, it isn't much. The fixtures are all in tip top condition. But, the food delivers. And I must say, that fresh naan that they bring out is one of the best naan I have had. So simple, yet so delicious. The person there was helpful and nice and made ordering easy. It's a good deal and the food was better than the options nearby for the price point and the amount. Absolutely one of the best biryanis I've ever had. It was well-seasoned with just a kick of spice. Since I've been in DC, I feel like my friends always want to get fancy Indian food...and yet this place, which is a bit of a hole in the wall, is top of my list so far. We ordered the mutton biryani and a lamb saag. Especially with the biryani, I wondered if they would even have any left at that time of night. Wonder turned to fear as he said they had it -- would it be terribly over-dry? No. It was one of the most delightful biryanis I can remember, and the mutton, which can so easily become an overwhelming taste, was tender and moist. And yet, the saag was still the show-stealer. I love a good saag and get it every chance I get, but this one stood out. Creamy (and yet not soupy), properly spicy, well-blended (not just pieces of meat thrown willy-nilly into a sauce at the last moment). We started with the vegetable pakora which were super crispy and you could tell they were made right before hitting the table. The vegetable biryani was massive, enough for 2-3 meals, and had great spice and flavor. The Shahi Paneer was our favorite, it had a sweeter tomato sauce with excellent flavor. The naan it came with was delicious as well. Before we left, the man at the cash register also let us try the gulab jamun which was probably the best I've ever had. Perfectly warm, soft, and sweet. The restaurant was very clean and as tables left the man was walking around cleaning them with spray. I want to like this place so much more. For the record, I have only ordered takeout from here. I have liked all the food I have ordered, but the price does not reflect the quantity of food. It seems like a lot at first, but many of the dishes have the meat on the bone and the meat to bone ratio is weirdly low. So much so that I get sick of eating because I don't want to pick around the bone. If they are going to leave the bone in, then they need to invest in better quality meat or make an effort to throw in more pieces off the bone. I want to order from here again because the sauces and the cook on the meat is so good, but it drops to a 3 star for me because I am unwilling to order again because it doesn't seem worth it. You order at the counter either off the extensive menu or do a combo of one protein and two sides, the combo also comes with naan. I had butter chicken (boneless), rice, lentils and garlic naan. It was very good and naan was hot right out of the tandoor. The young man working the counter was very nice and even gave us a sample of a dessert. I was hanging out at a friend's place in Arlington, and we were hungry so a friend suggested an Indian restaurant nearby called Mehran. It looked simple from the outside; it was a small looking place with large pictures of food on the windows. The inside was more spacious than I thought it would be, there's a table or two outside to sit and eat by the sidewalk, but the inside has much more room. You can freely move the tables around to seat however many people are in your group which is nice. The front counter and menu are very simple. They have TVs above the counter showing the different items and their prices, and there are some foods you can order on display under the glass of the front counter. As I started looking at the menu something I immediately noticed was the prices. I'm used to higher prices in Arlington and DC, but the items on the menu here were very affordable, so I was curious how much food I would get. I decided to get the butter chicken, as that's an Indian dish I've enjoyed before. I got garlic naan to go with it, and after our group ordered we sat at a table and waited. The cashier also acted as a server, and once he was done taking orders he brought us cups and a pitcher of water which I liked. The food came out decently quickly, and I was immediately pleased at how much food there was. There was a good amount of butter chicken, and it came with sides of rice and chole. The garlic naan was pretty big too, and everything looked delicious. If I hadn't gotten the garlic naan the meal would have come with regular naan, so I was very impressed with how much food you can get for just the price of the butter chicken. And as soon as I took one bite of the chicken, I knew I'd be coming back to this place again. The butter chicken was tender and so flavorful, and the sauce it was in was rich and had an amazing texture. I broke off pieces of the garlic naan and dipped it into the butter chicken sauce before using the naan to pick up the chicken and eat it, and this process mixed the flavors together very well and it was fun to do too. The rice and chole were also both very nice to eat alongside the chicken. The food came out on a plastic tray in paper plates, and the water cups were simple plastic cups, and considering how good the food was it felt less like I was in a restaurant and more like I was being served food at a friend's house, and I really liked this homey vibe. The server came to check on us while we were eating and asked if we liked the food, and he seemed genuinely pleased when we said we did. I came here for the first time late last year, and I've been back multiple times since. If any of my friends are visiting the area and we find ourselves looking for food in Arlington, I always suggest Mehran. The service is quick and friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the food speaks for itself. I'm sure I'll be back again soon, and I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more
