Been Looking for Michter's - 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon for sometime. Every store I went to, they jack up the price way to much. Until I find Mei Chi Liquors. The price was decent, so I went ahead and bought it, it happen they have the Michter's Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey 10 Year. I said to myself, Merry Christmas to me. So I bought it also... The whiskey selection here is excellent. I know this partially because they were the only place in the area that had a bottle of bourbon I was looking for,* and partially because I have eyes and can see the extensive assortment available (there's also more single malts by the door, including the Japanese imports). After wandering around the store a few times, I have determined that their excellent selection is not limited to brown spirits but includes just about everything, particularly wine. The staff is also quite helpful; one guy gladly ran and grabbed a stepladder so I could get my bottle off the top shelf (and even commiserated with me about being vertically challenged). If you don't feel like heading down Flatbush to check out the shop, their website Brooklyn Cellars (http://www.brooklyncellars.com/) is solid. I don't know why the site doesn't match the name of the actual store, but life is confusing sometimes. Decent little neighborhood wine and liquor shop. Came here to pick up a bottle of wine for a friend's housewarming party last weekend and they happened to be having a vodka tasting. JOY. I had some. Yep, still wanted wine - it was like about 4:30pm in the afternoon and I knew that I had quite the night ahead of me (and my liver). Wines here are organized by country of origin (yeah, yeah - like most wine shops) and then split up within those labels by red, white and rose. Cheaper wines are definitely highlighted and with a good cross-section of price points being available chilled. Awesome. The person at the counter wrapped up my wine gift style using a paper bag type wine bag that had a simple purple, vintage-y looking print with dots and grapes with leaves - it was a nice touch and super appreciated because he had no idea where the gift supplies were and had a limited amount of things to really work with. Duly impressed by the man behind the counter, who managed to tell me where the bottle I was looking for was by the precise shelf and position ("five shelves down on the left, second shelf from top, furthest right bottle") and then recommended something else instead ("three over, that's better.") Selection seems impressively deep, and they were giving out samples of scotch and wine on a Saturday evening. Disclosure: my friend owns this. So I admit, that even though I like wine and drink maybe a bottle or so a week and cook plenty of meals with it, I know only the basics. I know what the difference between all of them, i know which places grow what, and I know that I have some preferences on wineries. So I'm no expert and I need help when I shop. Even though my buddy works here, I never see her since they are a busy shop, but I buy whatever has a little tag in it that has a staff recommendation. I would say that almost every time, it is a moderately priced wine, between 10-30 dollars and it has been hand picked, tasted many times, and found at some far off wine snob convention. I know this for a fact, they put a ton of effort into picking the wines here. So far, I have never been disappointed with a pick, and they always have some killer sales going on here where you can grab some decent, sangria appropriate, or pasta appropriate sale wines which are still good to drink. They also put on sale the good stuff, so keep your eyes on the top shelf too. Also they have tastings Thurs-Sat but don't' quote me on that, I always miss them by half an hour or so. But they do let you try some pretty expensive and market hot stuff. read more

Mei Chi purports to specialize in "fine wines," and it lives up to that promise. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Pinot Noir called Flowers here, which I had assumed was only sold at Sherry Lehman. A Pinot Noir Cava that came in a nicely decorated case was a hit at a party. I've also never been disappined with their discounted wine specials, such as a New Zealand Sauvigon Blanc for $6.99. Great selection of wines and liquors, super chill but helpful staff, and very much appreciated in this location wedged between Park Slope and Prospect Heights. (For some reason, a very high percentage of all the house parties I've ever been to have been within walking distance of here.) Prices are surprisingly reasonable. There are occasional specials scattered like Easter eggs throughout the store. Most of the staff picks for wine are under $15, and there are quite a number of wines under $10. This place has a large assortment of wines and certain types of liquor. There are certain well known items that you will not find here, but that is due to the lack of local demand more than anything else. However, you may also find other items that arent found elsewhere because Mei Chi takes pride in offering a large assortment of the types of liquor that is in higher demand. You may also be pleasantly surprised at the frequent tastings that are held here. Recently, I stumbled upon a tasting sponsered by Remy Martin - where I had the pleasure of trying the VS, VSOP, and XO for free. For a cognac fan, this is pure bliss. I thought I loved Remy (and Mei Chi) before, now I know why. They also have a nice assortment of Sake, which isnt any larger than most of the nearby competitors, but the selection is well tailored. It is consistently one of the cheapest wine stores in the area (I am a cheap skate so I am always comparing prices) and over countless years of good recomendations I have grown to trust the advice of the guys that work there. They have a knack for recommending just the right thing. Also, they always seem to have some kind of free tasting going on. The only reason this place gets one star is because that's the lowest that you can review here on yelp. Yesterday I came here because this is the first liquor store that I saw, and I needed to get 10 bottles of bubbly at the last minute for an event I was throwing. The sales associate who helped me was quick to help (Okay so you actually earned that one star) but didn't want to check with his manager to see if they could do a bulk discount at my request. Long story short, I paid $7.61 per bottle for their cheapest. Afterwards, I find out that we didn't need all 10 bottles, so I called the store and ask them if I could come by and return the unused bottles. They said no problem, come on in. I returned the next day to process the exchange and all of a sudden they changed their mind and wouldn't honor the agreement we made previously. Honestly, if they had just said over the phone that they don't except returns, I would've been fine with that. However after making the drive back there, and going based on the agreement over the phone, that's what really upset me. Honor and integrity are most important when it comes to client relations and this place horrendously dropped the ball, especially when there are better places with better prices to purchase your bubbly in that area. Mei Chi Liquors became our go-to liquor because of its friendly and knowledgeable staff. We don't know his name (we should!) but a tall and young African American guy is always there and helps us to pick the best bottle for the occasion. He introduced me some great bottles of scotch, educating me a lot about the liquor. He helped my husband who were on the hunt for spirits to mix with rose - he came up with Aperol! Our rose spritzer became so popular among our guests over this summer. Like other reviewers, we too noticed the terrible attitude of management to customers and their staff - it's really only the reason I can't give 5 star on this store. read more

I've been coming here for many years given their wide selections and fair prices. They also have a lovely employee named Duane who did his best to help us and do the right thing. My soon to be husband and I were majorly disappointed in Mei Chi when they did not do the right thing. I went there to buy a bottle of champagne, Gonet-Medeville Tradition, for our first New Year's Eve together. It's the bottle we planned to open for the moment the ball dropped, but it had clearly gone bad and tasted skunky to both if us and we could not drink it. We called on Jan 2 to ask if we could exchange it or get a refund but Duane said it was against company policy. Duane was very responsive and helpful and tried his best to help us but the owners were ardently against it. We asked to speak to them directly to voice our complaints but they would rather have Duane do their bidding for them and would not call us back, although Duane did as he promised he would. They're lucky to have him working there. This turned us off big time and unfortunately will never shop there again. Terrible customer service to a very good patron of your store. read more

We're regulars here because their scotch selection is GREAT for every day sippers and their prices on scotch are the best around. We've done all the comparison shopping for you and they have consistently beat every liquor store we've been to in the neighborhood, in Manhattan, in New Jersey, and came close to usually/occasionally matched or beat the duty free at the airport. We buy a 3-4 bottles of whisky or whiskey almost every month. I also came in on a random day asking about which vodka they had was the cleanest tasting for a homemade vanilla project, last year, One of the managers poured me a sample of the one he recommended I use so I could try it before buying 2 liters of it. It ended up working great and my remaining liter of vanilla now, is still awesome! (Yes, you did math and see I used a litre of vanilla last year. I bake a lot.) I'm going to enquire about their buik prices for a local wedding, too. Hopefully they do that well, too because I love supporting local businesses!!! :) read more

There are many, many liquor stores in Brooklyn that sell an assortment of Wines and Liquors. This one is no different in their selection. It's mostly wines you have seen before at prices you would expect. My main issue with this store is that they don't sell anything exceptional, trendy or cutting edge in wine making. It's just a place to grab a bottle of wine before a dinner. And their wine prices are nothing to get excited about. Usually about $2 more than what you should be paying. And, above all else, the store temperature is unacceptably hot. Wine should not be stored at the 75+ degree temp that this store regularly is. On the other hand, Mei Chi has some of the best prices and best selection of whiskey in Brooklyn. read more

Was a customer here for over 5 years. One day purchased a defective bottle of wine (twist off,!not corked) which was defective. I attempted to exchange it, and management would not allow it since more than 2 days had passed since purchasing it. The folks working in the star offer excellent customer service, but management leaves much to be desired. Also, if you're looking for good wine selection, you're better off traveling a block further to Fermented Grapes. At least they would be willing to exchange a bottle of wine for you if they sold you a defective one that wouldn't open. read more

Found a bottle of scotch (The Macallan Classic Cut 2017 release for $109.99 and showed only 1 bottle left) on their website (A.K.A. Brooklyn Cellars) and MADE the credit card payment online on 8/29/18 (right before Labor Day weekend). The next day, I communicated with the store and let them know that I will pick up the bottle in few days. After two days, the store owner, Andrea Fang sent me an email and noticed me that she has canceled my order because I haven't pick up the bottle yet. If you go to their website, there is no indication or any kind of information that customer must pick up the bottle in certain days or the order will be canceled. It's 100% based on what the seller likes to do. All communications were made through emails and I never got their phone call once. There was no heads up or communication before canceling the order. If you were the business owner and your customer placed the order and made the payment, what are the reasons the seller wanted to cancel the order????? The true reason was she could sell the same bottle to the next buyer for a higher price (its now listed for $129.99 on their website as of 9/13/18; price increased by 18.18%). This is NOT ethical and it's not acceptable for consumer. I didn't even bother to argue or complaint to her and NOT recommend to do business with this store. read more

I love this liquor store! The staff is knowledgeable and even better, if you keep coming back, they quickly understand your taste and start to recommend wines, staying in your price range. As the neighborhood has 'improved,' Mei Chi has raised the quality and complexity of both the liquor and wine selections it offers. Prices, however, trend higher - anyone who says different is either comatose or misrepresenting the facts. The inclusion of beer in the descriptor at the top of the page at the time of this review (6/4/17) is incorrect, they do not sell beer. They also frequently have wine tastings on Friday and Saturday, after 5:00 pm and offer a 10% discount if you care to purchase the wines offered at the tasting. The staff is knowledgeable. The reason for only three stars is the unbelievably rude behavior of the owner/manager toward customers. Sometimes I wonder if she graduated with honors from the Attila the Hun school of inhospitality. A wine shop, in it's best presentation, represents a center of conviviality - a place to talk and celebrate the grape. Snarkiness and scowling do not make for fun. I've been in this same neighborhood with Mei Chi since 1998. The first time I went in it was small, cramped, and sealed with bulletproof glass. The staff was always friendly, though at that time the selection was limited. Some years after, they began telling customers that if there were wines they really liked to let them know, and they'd stock it. Their selections began to change, and the variety became good. Then they took over the space next door, and that's the Mei Chi you see today. They're fantastic, with selections of some wine and spirits that a lot of the stores in Manhattan don't have. Prices range from good finds to the more....ahem....exclusive brands. The service is excellent! I went to try a new rum one day, and the guy at the counter was like, "Wait a sec, we have some open in the back - would you like to try it?" You won't find that many other places. Contrary to what another reviewer mentioned, they do take credit cards, but not debit. read more

I asked the Asian dude at the counter when the Chinese New Year was scheduled and he got pissy, rolling his eyes, and said "I wouldn't know! The Saturday before Valentine's Day, I purchased 2 bottles of wine for a special dinner with my fiance. I bought a $18 bottle of red from the sale section for $15. The cork was dried out and it was totally undrinkable. I tried to return it by speaking with the manager. She said there was nothing she could do because she was already selling it at cost and couldn't take the loss. I've never owned a business, but I assume sometimes you take a loss on your inventory. And why would you even sell a product you know to be inferior/unusable?! I've spend several hundred dollars on wine & liquor at Mei Chi in the past 2 years, but I will never shop there again. I came here in preparation for a NYE party. They have a great selection for an average sized Brooklyn liquor store, so you may find yourself wandering a bit and contemplating if you should try a new type of alcohol for the evening, just because. The staff was super friendly, worked to ensure that I got a discount once they realized that I was purchasing cases of champagne and wine and...they bought the cases out to my car. Since those cases were hella heavy, that was definitely the tipping point for me. My only issue was that we had to pay in cash although I believe they take credit cards. Mei Chi Liquors is, without a doubt, the BEST liquor / wine store in Park Slope. Located between the 7th Ave B&Q plus the Grand Army 2&3 train stations means it's super convenient to stop by after a day of work. The fact that it isn't a pretentious hipster-staffed "sommeiller destination" also makes it great, so don't feel worried about visiting for the first time. The staff (Particularly Dwayne,) has always been incredibly helpful AND friendly in a way that made them seem open to random conversation, which is always nice. I've had great talks with the staff regarding personal issues, pop-culture trends, and politics in a "no-pressure" zone rarely found. While others can say this isn't important, frequenting a certain liquor / wine vendor due to convenience does not make a vendor "good:" Mei Chi, however, goes above and beyond, which is the reason I forgo convenience occasionally in order to support their business. For anybody who feels this may just be another "Flatbush Ave Liquor Store," you're simply wrong. While the prices are highly competitive vs PSlope, they're also much more informative with tastings and recommendations, which just cannot be beat. If you have any doubts, go there just once to realize those doubts are likely unfounded. I'm a straight-up person who typically HATES most liquor stores / wine vendors, but Mei Chi is the perfect combo of high-selection goods with casual yet educated staff who can be VERY informative without financial incentive. read more

This place is borderline 2 stars. I don't know what people are talking about saying this place is well organized. There are regional and varietal labels throughout the store, but these only occasionally match the wines on the shelf. Two wines from the same region, same grape will occasionally be on opposite sides of the store, so there's no telling if you're looking in the right place. The tastings are a joke too. The two times I've been in there when they are tasting, they are pouring some really mediocre, mass market wine. Woodbridge Reserve or Kendall Jackson don't really depend on in store tastings to sell, so not really sure why they do this. The staff doesn't seem particularly knowledgable either. This place is fine for liquor and if you're after a liter of Yellow Tail or Kendall Jackson, but if you're after good wine, well organized, with informed staff it's not really the place. I've been coming here for the better part of two years - its a really great spot. Great wine and liquor selection and the staff seems pretty damn knowledgeable about everything. They have good sales/deals too. And the constant tastings... holy crap. Sometimes you leave half in the bag.
