Lucky all you people residing in the area of Coquitlam B.C. for the place that I ate lunch with my extended family while visiting with them. Being from L.A. and Orange County, Mei le offered one of the best dim sum I have had in the past 50+ years. Like the shu-mai and ha-gow were plump and very good as was the fried taro ball done to perfection but the big 'bomb" was the Lotus wrap (aka: lo-mai-gai) best I have had in more than 19 years! It was the biggest and the most packed ever! In short everything we ordered was excellent, not one bad item. Enjoy. read more

Their pastries are pretty good but nothing special. I had their wifey cookie and the pineapple bun. The wifey cookie/bun outer layer could be more flaky. The pineapple bun was not bad. I really like how big it was and it had a generous amount of the butter sweet flaky topping. read more

I was sooooo excited to try this place when I saw they had 3.2 stars on yelp! For those unfamiliar, there's an unspoken belief that if a Chinese restaurant has 3 stars on yelp, they have amazing food and substandard service. I am sad to report that this was somewhat the case. Yes, the service was substandard but the food was too :( The service was pretty typical for a Chinese restaurant. The servers are doing their jobs and don't care too much about pleasantries. My main gripe is that we all felt like the food was bland (apart from the fried string beans). We had also ordered chow mein with bokchoy and beef. They had typed in our order wrong and instead a beef brisket friedchow mein came out. We told them that the wrong order came out and they tried to convince us to keep it but it wasn't what we wanted! If you are familiar with Cantonese food, beef brisket has a VERY distinct taste. Eventually they agreed to take back the beef brisket chow mein and came out 2 minutes later with the chow mein we had originally ordered. I could taste the beef brisket sauce on it still. They had just removed the beef brisket from the noodles and replaced it with beef and bokchoy. In my opinion, they should've made us a new dish as this completely changed the taste of the dish. In terms of vibes, the restaurant looks like your typical Cantonese restaurant, the inside is a decent size. I think the clientele here leans more to the older side, not many young people seem to frequent here. Overall, I will not be coming back or ordering from here again :( read more

It was back recently for a taste of their dim sum offerings once again. It was an early in the week, and in the day visit, and a good while since we had been there for our last dining experience. Upon arrival we were warmly-greeted, and told to take a table of our choosing. A disappointment when we ventured inside and saw what they had done to the table arrangements alongside the windows since our last visit. With the tables now moved closer together (I assume to offer more group seating), we (threesome) ended up having to choose (with the our server pointing to it) a table against a wall in a corner. Big enough 'yes', but the "feeling" of where we had always used to sit was gone, and for me, it was definitely a poor start to a much-anticipated return dining experience. On a more positive note, subsequent food service to our table was as friendly and cordial as it always had been. We had gone there for dim sum, and ordered all dishes from the 'front side' of the menu. With only one exception, all dishes ordered were very well-known to us, and had been ordered at this restaurant on several previous dining occasions. The food: an overall view as compared to previous dining experiences -- presentations featured minimal garnishes -- preparations offered reduced amounts, with over salting, and over cooking. Sorry to say, but the dining experience was just 'ok' this time, and I cannot extend any of my usual kudos their way. read more

We stopped by for lunch. Thankfully we had made reservations in advance as the restaurant was busy. They had added seating in the bakery display area since my last visit to increase capacity. There was a small line out the door. We ordered a number of dim sum items and other lunch items. Service was fast and efficient. Food quality was average for the price. Portion size was also good that we had leftovers to take home. I think this a decent priced Chinese food option in the area. There is ample parking available on the plaza. read more

Interesting restaurant that doubles as dim sum and bakery! Mei le bakery and restaurant located in coquitlam They have dim sum from 9:30am-3pm we got steamed rice with spareribs and chicken feet. I love this rice pot and it is quite full and has all this meat but the rice was very soft to the point of almost mush like congee we also got shui mai which was underwhelming and their steamed rice roll is also available during the dim sum time. I didn't like that the steamed rice roll with beef had some green lettuce bits that would supposedly make the rice roll more crunchy? (But it's steamed so it's soft) well the point is I don't like that added green stuff. I'd prefer it without! And they had a lunch special from 10am-5pm and we got my favourite dish the pan fried rice noodles with beef. It was a huge portion or maybe because I had the dim sum before the lunch but it was a big plate of noodles and got iced lemon tea drink on the side. read more

one of my fav bakeries in Coquitlam! I'd say they are most known for their apple tarts (and often sell out) and their fresh steamed baos. It's really nice having a bakery, bbq meats and restaurant in the neighbourhood as many are few and far between. Prices are reasonable and it's hard to get just one bun so be prepared to leave with many! read more

Among all the Chinese restaurants in the area, Mei Le is unique in that it has a full fledged Chinese bakery attached. For an independent restaurant, I am very impressed with the selection, price, quality and value. We took our a few bakery items to try. This place has a real feel of a family run restaurant vibe to it. There is nothing fancy about the decor and ambiance but the regulars seems to love it. We had a simple lunch dim sum. Prices are reasonable for these days. Service is attentive and food tasted great. Overall I recommend it. read more

I am not sure why this restaurant received such low score, some of the lower score reviews relates to "service" issues, which is understandable, in my case, I was lucky to be getting pretty good service all through my meal. First off, it is located in this part of Coquitlam that do not have this type of a restaurant and second, the variety they carry is pretty impressive! You get HK Style Chinese BBQ, Steamed Buns, HK Style Bakery, Steamed Rice Dumplings wrapped in Bamboo leaves, HK Style Cafe dishes, Cantonese traditional dishes, and a few Chinese Mainland dishes and OH they have Dim Sum too!! With this combination in a location like this is well deserve some kudos, as this will make it so much easier for local residence to have a taste of Chinese Cantonese cuisine in their neighbourhood. Food wise, I would say its very up to par with most of the places in Richmond! That is a high standard to compare to, so please be adventurous and venture out to try this very eclectic restaurant!! I only bought the dim sum items for take out. They were pretty decent. I liked the mini egg tarts with the flaky crust. The pork turnover was also nice but it was so big. I liked the dim sum size which was more manageable. My friend liked the sesame ball with red bean filling which was also bigger than the usual dim sum size. The tapioca cake was like the nian gao (sweet glutinous rice cake) which was unexpected. I will have to come back to try the food here next time. read more

For this review I'll be reviewing their in store BAKERY, not the restaurant. It's located in the area right across from the Coquitlam Cineplex and Cactus Club. I'm giving it a 4 simply because I didn't enjoy all of the pastries I've bought from them. Pastries: 1) Apple Tart: Not pictured because I ate it too fast. You should for sure get it if you like apple strudels because it's similar to one but with more filling and a softer philo pastry texture which I love. $1.90/each and I'm pretty sure it's 6 for around $10. 2) Hot Dog buns: Big bun on the left in the picture. Pretty standard, which isn't a bad thing. No surprises. The one part that I wouldn't mind them changing is the sugar they brush on top to give the bread more flavour. It gets really sticky which gets annoying if you can't wash your hands right away or if you don't have Purell around. $2/each 3) Almond cookie: Massive yellow thing in the pic. Skip it. That's all. Tastes like a less sweet sugar cookie. Meh. 4) Sesame ball aka. Botchi: Really good when you can get them warm. Great flavour. 5) BBQ pork buns: Taste really fatty. More fat than meat. Not for me. Info: - They accept all forms of payment, which is great because some Chinese bakeries only accept cash. Looking for more comfort food during the last cold spell so this time we ordered delivery from Mei Le. I decided to do a bit of research to see their specialties and was surprised at how much filipino-type dishes they have. We ordered the BBQ pork asado bun (a.k.a. sio pao), Chicken deluxe bola-bola bun, Chicken and Corn soup, Singapore style vermicelli and, Vermicelli Filipino style (a.k.a Pancit Bihon). We immediately dove into the sio paos as these are one of our favourite Filipino food. They were nice and fluffy and still steamy in the box. The BBQ pork was ok if a bit too fatty; it wasn't as stuffed as I would like and not as tasty as the ones we used to get at Newtown. (Same goes for the Chicken deluxe.) We also found out we got a bonus soup! We got a small order of the fish balls in clear broth (like you'd get in wonton soup) and it was delicious! The fish balls were very flavourful. It went well with the siopaos. (THANK YOU, MEI LE!) The Chicken and Corn soup was also very satisfying with plenty of chicken. The Pancit Bihon was very authentic, it even had big pieces of liver which I promptly removed (it's traditional Filipino but I'm not a fan so I promptly removed them.) The Singapore vermicelli was not spicy enough but plenty of shrimps and tasty. I'm glad we found Mei Le so close to home. We would probably order from them again and may even visit it one of these days just to see what other bakery products they have. read more

With the limited number of dim sum options in Coquitlam it is always great to find another restaurant to try out! They have a good variety of dim sum and amongst my favourite is the steamed rice noodles with beef. It is such a generous portion and very smooth. Services here is very quick and they even have a section that seeks bbq meat and baked goods! This place has easily been our go to place when we are craving dim sum in the area. read more

I was heading to Golden Ears Provincial Park and decided to make a quick lunch stop + snack grab at Mei Le Bakery & Restaurant, which is conveniently on the way from downtown Vancouver. Right as you walk into the restaurant, there were clearly labeled directional arrows for entering/ordering/exiting and hand sanitizers were readily available - definitely COVID safe. I ordered 3 BBQ meat on rice and got baked goods to-go and will review both here. 3 BBQ meat on rice: 1. Roast Duck (3/5): the roast duck looked good, but tasted just okay. The meat had no flavor and was not juicy. However, the star of this meat was the skin. 2. BBQ Pork (1/5): good red coloring, but most of the pieces were hella dry. You will definitely need to supplement the BBQ pork with some sort of sauce to able to eat this. Do not get this meat. 3. Roast Pork (1/5): the meat was okay - some pieces were tender while others were dry. However, the skin was super disappointing. Roast pork's skin is suppose to be crispy and crunchy. Unfortunately, the skin was just hard to chew. Do not get this meat. Baked goods (*if you get 6 items or more, they waive off tax): 1. Pineapple bun aka bo lo bao (4/5): the crust is flakey and delicious. However, there's is a lot of bread (this could be a good or bad thing pending what you prefer). 2. BBQ pork bun (5/5): this was by far my favorite item from this restaurant so far! The pork was juicy and flavorful. The best part is the bread. The bread is slightly sweet and they provided a generous amount of BBQ pork in the bun. 3. Sausage on bread (3/5): honestly, I don't have much to say on this one. This was just a regular sausage on bread that you would find in any Chinese bakery. Overall, I would not come out of my way to eat at Mei Le and would only recommend you to come to Mei Le if you happen to be in the area and are looking for a quick fix to mediocre Chinese food. read more

This is one of the few places in the area to get BBQ pork, and the bakery looked pretty good so I wanted to give it a try. Parking was easy, service was quick and staff were very nice. Unfortunately my experience with the food was just ok. I got one order of BBQ pork rice, plus cheese a hotdog bun, BBQ pork bun and ham sui gok (glutinous rice dumpling) to take home. The BBQ pork was pretty average, there are many better places to go imo. Though I guess I might have high standards from eating it at the top spots in Richmond. Baked goods were also just ok, the bread was not especially soft and hardened quickly by the next day. The only thing I would get again is the ham sui gok, maybe dim sum is more their forte? read more

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I believed I was supporting a local business by purchasing food from their location. However, I was immensely disappointed with the customer service for the following reasons: 1. They told me they had a certain menu item which they, in-fact, did not. Upon arrival to the location for pickup, we found out the statement was untrue. 2. They forgot to give us part of our order and therefore overcharged us. 3. When eating our order, we found a hair in a dumpling. This was the most disappointing part, as one would hope they were taking adequate precautions to maintain cleanliness during this pandemic. These actions put us at risk of contracting covid-19. They have been reported to heath Canada. Would NOT recommend! read more

Got skip the dishes buns and noodles, was quite disappointed. Eggs noodles were soft and soggy and the soup was so bland. I think i got the leftover duck cuz it was all bones, barley any meat. The wontons were just ok. For $13 it was a rip off! I ended up throwing the noodles away! The egg tart was falling apart and difficult to eat. It wasn't flakey or tasty. The buns were mediocre. I loved the garlic spring rolls but for $7.50 for 2 thats cut in half, its very very expensive. Apple pies were good $1.75. St. Germain and Hon's is much much better.... and cheaper!! read more

I feel bad for making this review but my experience here was awful start to finish. I came here with my partner and we were not treated with friendly service. I watched as another couple who came in 10 minutes later get greeted nicely and had their order taken right away while we sat and waited longer. Our food was just as bad as the service, unfortunately. The shrimp dumplings had an off smell and were dry. The sticky rice was also dry and bland. We didn't enjoy any of our food and decided it was best we paid and leave. I asked to pay for our food and the woman I spoke to was wanting us to stay and didn't want to listen to me. It wasn't until I spoke with another waitress that she let us pay and go. I think she was the only nice part of our visit here. She even stopped us in the parking lot to let us know we paid for something else that we didn't eat. Lots of people rave about this place, even go as far as saying it is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the tri cities so I went to check them out. First for dimsum but was completely disappointed. Every dish we ordered was very bland and did not have much flavour to it at all. A few months later we decided to check out how their dinner dishes were. Again, disappointed with each dish. The chow mein was slimey, the rice was bland and the honey garlic was just ok... had the runs after too which is never a good sign. I would pick Chinese food from the mall I've this place any day. The bbq pork was poorly cut compared to the next table (double the portion and presented tidily)... assume the chef here went on break? Honey garlic ribs - was so so... the beef in the beef and Chinese broccoli was chewy and bland. Dessert was sago and taro, again disappointingly bland - all (but 1) chuck of taro was undercooked and tough. 2 instead of 1 star because at least staff was friendly. Had lunch at Mei Le Bakery and restaurant and we had fried vermicelli with satay beef and the presentation was neat and original, leaving the crispy vermicelli on top instead of on the bottom so it remains crispy instead of soggy. Nicely done. We also had the salt and pepper tofu. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Best we ever had when compared with other Chinese restaurants. And to too it off, we had Chinese sugar donut. Not unlike ordinary donuts but more fluffy and only available in this bakery. The price in this restaurant is commensurate with the standard and quality ..... Not cheap. But then nothing is cheap any more. read more

Been here several times for dinner, and will continue to go. The food is average, if not above average, for the area (compared to other Chinese restaurants in Coquitlam). Coquitlam was really missing a chinese restaurant that does a little of everything: bakery, bbq, and a restaurant. I have found the portions and the taste fairly consistent over the half-a-dozen times I've been there. Service is average for a chinese restaurant, but I'm the type of person who goes to restaurants to judge food and I don't put much weight on service (unless it's terrible). Bbq is good, and is really 1 of not many places in Coquitlam that have Chinese BBQ. However, i do have to say the dessert served with the dinner can be underwhelming at times. I.e. the red bean dessert being watery. Overall, a good place for good Chinese food and maybe even a dessert afterward from the bakery. read more

My plate of BBQ pork looked like leftovers; meanwhile the table next to me, who seem to be regulars from their interaction with staff, got a full plate of meat. I decided to ask a different server and was told it would be okay to order the duck. A few minutes later a third (and different) server told me they were out. This is when I really started to question the situation. I was then served with a cold plate to BBQ duck bones minutes later with barely a bite of meat that lacks flavour. Hello, kind folks of the internet. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this place. I would give it a lower score if I could. The service that I had at this restaurant was among the worst I've ever experienced in my life. I will never visit this restaurant again. I was really hungry and excited to visit this place for the first time. The staff greeted me in Chinese and continued to speak in Chinese until I told them I don't speak Chinese. I shrugged it off but I thought it was unprofessional of them to assume my nationality. I asked for some recommendations from the server and I got a blank response from the server. Expressionless blank stare. It was now evident she did not speak fluent English and she eventually pointed at the pork buns and dumpling lunch menu saying "Everything good." I was lost at what to order but opted to go with pork bun, spicy pork bun, shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling, and spare rib. The server took my order and came back with another server who spoke English. He told me that spicy pork was not available and recommended the chicken deluxe bun. I agreed. In literally 30 seconds we got the pork bun and chicken deluxe bun. They were cold. Intolerably cold. On top of that the chicken deluxe bun was the worst tasting bun I had in my life. The chicken was dry, hard, it didn't even look like chicken. More like mashed potatoe. I called the first server and asked the bun to be exchanged for a warm one. She responded with a sneer "microwave?" I eventually got in touch with another server who spoke English and he was able to exchange my chicken deluxe bun with a regular chicken bun. The bun this time around wasn't cold but not warm at all either. The contents of both buns were lackluster at best. It was 75% doughy bun no exaggeration. Barely any meat. I left good 50% of the buns on the plate. The dumplings were pretty tasty. Soft and flavorful no complaints there. But the spare rib oh boy. Stay away from that dish. Nothing but bones and three bites of stringy low quality meat. To put the nail on the coffin, the waitress by the counter did not know how to use the debit machine. She waved over another younger waiter and proceeded to serve another customer's dish without even saying or making eye contact with me. The younger waiter punched in a few numbers and gave me the machine to pay then he proceeded to face the other way and walk towards the kitchen. We decided to drop in after driving by the restaurant after going to Superstore and were pleasantly surprised by the setup. The dimsum was varied and tasty. We also took some buns home and they were good too. The bbq pork was tender and sweetened with honey sauce. My mom ended up buying the frozen dai bao which was buy 2 packs/get 1 pack free. read more
