Was invited to my friends' house for dinner that they ordered from North Garden. It was horrid!! The four dishes had barely any sauces and the meats on all four dishes were overcooked (chicken, pork and beef brisket) and the vegetables were not prepared properly. The Shanghai noodles had cabbage strips that looked like 2x4's!! This was the worst Chinese food I've had in a long time. We have been living in this hood for 6 months, and like Grand Seasons, we avoided North Garden like a plaque due to low ratings. Lately I have experienced many seemingly high rated venues that were crappy and vice versa. Obviously there are those that know how to game the system and those that don't give damn about Yelp. North Garden, like Grand Seasons across the street, is the latter. North Garden is located in the old strip mall in Burquitlam that is currently being rezoned by developers on Clark Road. If all things go well for the evil doers, in a few years, this joint will be no more. I don't know what the reincarnation plans are, the 6-8 giganormous high-rises will stamp out the foot print of this strip mall. So enjoy while it lasts.... We ordered #15 Snow Pea with Prawn, #75 Beef Brisket with Brown Sauce, and #95 BBQ Pork & Shrimp Fried Rice. Let me tell you - the portions are massive. With the Snow Pea with Prawn, my partner asked them to hold their typical sauce with gluten, so they substituted it with vegetable oil and chicken powder. Taste was ok. Prawns were de-veined and cooked with right texture. The BBQ Pork & Shrimp fried rice was ample size and standard affair. Decent, not cooked with leftover rice but fresh rice. Lastly, the star of the meal was the Beef Brisket with Brown Sauce. I have been to some of the best of best brisket places. This is not bad but for the price, this a fantastic offering. Ironically other Yelpers miss this dish because of the crappy English description. It is slow braised in four different sauces and ginger and served on a two layer lettuce bed. Yeah sure it looks brown but don't call it that! The beef were tender and juicy without being overcooked. This dish at its current configuration and price is a steal. A little pricy but the portions are HUGE. The restaurant itself is pretty dingy and small though and the customer service is pretty crappy. In one of our Take-Out Tuesdays, we felt like Chinese and I remembered someone recommended North Garden so we decided to give it a go. I ordered from one of the food delivery service and we decided to pick-up to avoid the exorbitant delivery fee. I ordered the Wonton soup, Singapore-style fried vermicelli, Beef with Black Bean sauce on fried rice noodles and Spicy Salt and Peppery Spareribs. I can honestly say this is one of the best authentic Chinese food we've had in the Tri-cities. The portions were very generous and full of flavour. The Wonton broth was full of bone broth goodness. The rest of the dishes had a good spiciness to them which made me want to keep on digging in. They were very generous with the beef slices in one of the noodle dishes. And the spareribs is one of those things that you just want to scoop out the pieces of garlic and szechuan pepper and pile it on the ribs. I picked North Garden for my belated birthday lunch the other day. We (threesome) arrived about 11:00 am, and were able to find parking right in front of the entrance. The restaurant offers a selection of two- and four-seat tables -- the larger tables arranged along one inside wall, with the smaller tables arranged along the other inside, and outside walls, and down the center. We chose one of the 4-place tables. A quite plain and simple decor, and rather quiet ambiance, it looked and felt like our kind of small, local neighbourhood kind of place. After choosing the table, and getting seated, our server arrived with menus, and mugs of hot tea. Yeah, we were off to a good start. Here's what was ordered and shared: (names of dishes and listings as per menu) - Appetizer: Honey Garlic Spareribs -- Beef: Beef with Tomatoes -- Chow Mein: Sauteed Rock Cod with Vegetable Chow Mein -- Pan Fried Shanghai Thick Noodle -- Seafood: Spicy Salt & Peppery Squid. The food arrived from kitchen to table in very well-sized, good looking portions, with the dishes closely and appropriately sequenced. It definitely looked like I (we) had over-ordered a touch, but, heh, it was a birthday lunch, and a little overdoing is allowed at such times! The food really did look good, and when all dishes were on, and covering our table, it surely did look like we were set to enjoy a feast!! But how did the preparations and tastes fair? Ribs - meat tender, coating crispy - dish tasty -- Squid - flesh very tender & sweet, coating light, condiments spicy hot - dish about as good as it gets -- Chow Mein - rock cod soft & sweet, veggies & noodles fine - dish 'ok', decent portions of fish, but quite heavy on noodles, and light on veggies -- Beef w/Tomatoes - plentiful, tender & flavourful slices of beef & tomato, absolutely delicious sweet & savoury sauce - dish so flavourful & tasty, a major hit with the three of us -- Shanghai Noodle - noodles & other ingredients, on-the-mark - dish very flavourful & tasty. Great place to grab a quick bite or for some chinese takeout. I been walking pass the sign of this restaurant recently and noticed it finally opened. They had a location on North Road and I believe they have recently relocated here. For now the restaurant didn't seem too busy at all with 1 or 2 customers coming in and out for takeout as well on a weeknight. I ordered a take out for a rice and a noodle dish recently and the restaurants cooked it up in a swift! The pricing is quite similar to most chinese restaurants ranging from $11-16 per a dish. The portion is quite generous! The 1 rice and 1 noodle dish I ordered can pretty much feed 4 people! A good option to go to if you don't feel like cooking! read more

Really good Chinese food! I've been going here for the last 10 years and it's always been fresh and tasty. The workers always greet us with a smile and are happy to make changes to their meat dishes to make them vegetarian for us. Some of the dishes are a little on the expensive side and the decor has not been touched since 1990 (I'm sure it was pretty swanky in 1990) But the food has always kept us coming back and that's the most important thing. read more

I've been back a few times since my last review, the quality of food is still good but the service is terrible now. What a shame.

People who frequent HK style cafes know that these joints have everything. The menu makes no sense, there's no theme, and yet it's all awesome. You know how in Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, he'll always advise restaurants to focus on a type of food, a small menu, and to do those few focused dishes well? An HK cafe owner would tell him that's dumbass advice. Why turn away potential customers? Hong Kong style cafes have giant menus, like your Bio 200 textbook. You're not even going to bother to read through all it, some of these menus are so complex and dense they have a table of contents. Tripe with lai fun in soup? Got it. BBQ pork, BBQ duck or roast pork? Yes. Lobster, shrimp and crabs? Check. Fish? Definitely. Pork meatloaf? Have it. Curry? Of course. The really busy places will even have steak, fries, and burgers (this place does not). Say something and they just might make it though, because what smart HK business owner turns away hungry diners? I've been to places where I'll order something not on the menu that's available at other HK cafes, and the server will basically be like, "You know, we don't have that but F it, maybe the Chef has a duck lying around back there let me go check." They have all the HK cafe favourites here: iced lemon tea, milk tea, BBQ duck, lai fun, wonton soup, Chinese style meat loaf. I don't think they do their own BBQ (I don't see any BBQ ducks or roast porks hanging for sale), but they have live seafood. I'd say by Burnaby/Richmond/Coquitlam standards, this place is 3 stars. It's decent, comparable to every other place. It does not disappoint, but you're not wow'd by their noodles or BBQ meat like some other places. I'll bump them up a star though. They don't skimp on delivery or takeout, everything is nicely packed in quality containers. More importantly, at most HK cafes, the service is pretty minimal. Typically you'll order from a server in total DGAF mode, they'll punt you your dishes in 5 minutes, you have to figure out who ordered what, and they try to turn the table around. But the servers here are nice. They remember what I like and are friendly. And I am completely addicted to their iced lemon tea. read more

If I could, I would rate North Garden as 2 1/2 stars. We stopped by for takeout at 11 AM on Sunday, right when they opened. There were already 5 or 6 tables in the place already. This part of Burquitlam is pretty limited as far as Cantonese restaurants go, so this would be one of the better ones to try. We ordered: Broccoli and beef: very average, and I wouldn't order it again. Dried scallop fried rice: this dish was ok, but way under seasoned. Honey garlic spareribs: not bad, but could use more honey. Cod and tofu hot pot: this was my favorite dish. The fish was nice and tender. The restaurant itself is pretty sparse, but it is surprisingly big inside. There is an upper and a lower parking lot, so getting a spot shouldn't be a problem. I heard that their Peking duck is pretty good, so I will have try it next time. They also had some really good prices for fresh lobster and crab dishes. If you can't drive to Richmond and want Cantonese food, then give North Garden a try (they also offer delivery during dinner). read more

This is one of out favorite Cinese take-outs. We had the chicken chow mein, beef and broccoli, chicken fried rice and Spicy prawns. All helping were good and plenty of prawns although they were still in the shell and not de-viened. Maybe I'm eating them wrong but once the shell stripped all the light batter and spices are gone and the flavour was minimized.won't be ordering those again. But good value and will stick to our favourites. Maybe try Prawns in Black bean sauce. read more

There are hundreds of Chinese restaurants like this in the city. Nothing differentiate this restaurant from others. I only go there because of their convenient location for me. The food tastes good, I'd rather don't ask what's in it :) It kinda seems they have the same sauce for everything just use the various spices. So when I order szechuan style chicken or chicken with black bean sauce, I've got almost the identical dishes :) Service is fine.. not the best, though. There are servers that speak English so-so and some barely. And I'm ESL so I SHOULD understand. Not always... Happened to me when I called and ordered a takeout, got completely different dish. A guy on the phone was completely lost :) They offer nice dinner specials.. 2 items, soup, rice and dessert for $29.50; 3 items.. 4 items.. etc. Portions are generous. North Garden continues to operate take out service during the COVID 19 pandemic but has since restarted dine in service since July. So we visited it yesterday. We ordered our favorite green beans and we were not disappointed. We also ordered baked pork chops on fried rice and that turned out to be disappointing to us and to us only. The reason was that the taste was somewhat different than before. The pork cutlets were rather dry. Yet the chef was the same unchanged. The sauce was way darker and lack the specific aroma that we went there specifically for. To us that was the best in Vancouver and it was lacking this time. Perhaps we were just unlucky on that occasion. We will give it another try later. I hope they can bring that taste back. read more

I found out DoorDash delivery was free today, so I had Buddha's Feast chow mein and Cod and Bean Curd hot pot from North Garden Restaurant delivered. They said it would arrive at 12:40, but it actually came 20 minutes sooner, which was a bonus. I've eaten in at North Garden several times, because I love their beef brisket noodle soup. This order did not disappoint. It was some of the best Chinese take-out I've ever enjoyed. I previously tried the Buddha's Feast from a different restaurant just across the road, which was pretty good, but this was better. The quantities were most generous. This will probably be enough for three meals for two adults. Will definitely be continuing as a steady customer. read more

I have high standards for good asian cuisine, the funny thing is in my experiance the best memories of great food always came from the little hole in the wall places..and this one is no exception! I used to live walking distance from North garden 5 years ago and the food was good. Nothing special. However they must have hired a new chef because i recently went back and the food was amazing! Best sweet and sour pork that my super picky kids gobble up! Plus the lunch special menu includes soup and generous portions. My personal discovery is the "Green beans with special sauce!" Not like your usual spicy green beans this is a perfect blend of all flavours! I write this because i look around when i am there for lunch and for the large space it is very empty and i hope people try it so it does not close down. We did a home delivery order from North Garden when we were snowed in. This was the only restaurant whose delivery guy was willing to make it out to us. So special kudos to them for braving the snow!!! The food was as good as any Chinese take away. Nothing exceptional but I appreciate them delivering despite the daunting snow covered roads when most other restaurants chickened out. One thing they could work on is making their menu more available online and on better comprehension over phone. We did find a menu that seemed like it was theirs. But when we called, the person who attended could not understand our order and said they did a few days of the dishes that were on the menu. My fiance and I ordered takeout and it was both our first time to try this restaurant out. I ordered us the Diced Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Beef with Kai Lan, Beef Fried Rice, and a small size of the Cream and Corn Soup. The service was prompt. They had told me that it will take 20mins for the food to be ready to pick up and by the time I got there it was already waiting for me, which means no wait time! All in all I really enjoyed everything. My hubby did not like the diced chicken (that was his dish, the rest was all mine muahaha) but the dishes that I ordered were quite good. The Cream and Corn soup could have used a little bit of salt but it was still good. But what I got to say though -- the MAIN thing that deserved the 5 stars -- are the portions that we got. I kid you not, this was the FIRST Chinese restaurant in the Burquitlam area that provided such LARGE and FULL amounts of each dish. It was definitely worth the price and honestly this food lasted me 4 days because of how much food they had provided us. It's ridiculous, in a very, very good way. They serve the best Mapo Tofu in town. I go there every week just for the Mapo Tofu. The price is really reasonable, the serving portion is incredible, the meal also comes with a drink. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who loves Canto style food. read more

We ordered in delivery. They were prompt and friendly. We paid $40 for black bean and beef, spicy curried chicken and spicy garlic prawns with a side of steamed rice. All three dishes were delicious! Worst service I've ever received. Went at around 2 and there were not many people there. We have 2 people and asked if we can sit at the booth but the waitress rudely told us only 4 people can sit. Been there five times, only order one dinner every time: Peking Duck! They offer two kinds of ways of it. One is the traditional way, they "peel" the skin of a roasted duck, offer you pancakes, green onions, and sweet source. You put a piece of duck skin, some green onions and sweet source on the pancake and make roll. The duck skin is very crispy! The other way is they chopped the duck meat and fried it with other ingredients. You make lettuce roll of it. It's $34, and it's not on the menu (seems), it's on the poster. We two cannot finish all the two dishes, and have to pack part of the second dish home. And it tastes good even after microwaved. read more
