As long as I'm living in NYC I will continue to go to her for my hair care needs. Here are just a few reasons why: 1) she uses O&M products for color. I try to be as clean as possible when it comes to my beauty products, and this is on of the best non-toxic brands on the market. It's hard to find a salon that uses them. I was hiking an hour each way to a place in meatpacking to go to the actual O&M salon and was sooooo excited when I walked by her salon one day and saw the products in the window. She does a better job than O&M with their own products too - one time O&M let me leave with a full patch of gray not covered and an uneven haircut LOL. Thank god for Catherine - she NAILS it every time. 2) she listens - she knows I'm generally low maintenance with my beauty routine and gives me a cut and color that are easy to maintain, but look effortlessly great when air dried, and lays just right when I DO blow it out. Another thing I appreciate is she TEACHES me about my own hair. I lost a lot of hair due to stress during the pandemic and one day she pointed out that I was actually experiencing a lot of hair regrowth, and took the time to help me understand the difference between breakage and new hair growth. 3) Cezanne treatment - worth every penny and changed my life. It's a great slightly less toxic alternative to keratin and it works beautifully. I have low porosity hair with a couple different (subtle) curl patterns and A LOT of frizz. The treatment helps my natural waves shine (literally and figuratively) and I don't get lost behind a halo of soft frizzy wisps. It has never been so easy for me to look polished with minimal effort. I was clear that I wanted to maintain some of my wave/natural curl, and so she was very careful to not over-correct. Could not be any happier and will 100% be doing it again. 4) she cares - I had a muscle spasm last week and still in a little pain before my appointment yesterday. I was concerned about the hair wash portion, but she took such good care of me. She offered me a heat pack while I let my color set for a half hour, and she was super careful while washing my hair. Not Curly Hair Friendly/Price Differed from Quoted Price…read more I went to Color Haven two weeks ago and had my hair highlighted by Rina, the owner and sole stylist there. The price she charged me for my crown highlights differed by almost $40 from the price she told me two weeks earlier when I went in for a price quote. When I asked about the difference, she flared and said I'd used her electricity drying my hair. She had earlier said: "most of my curly clients leave with their hair wet." Unfortunately, I cannot do that in the winter plus I wanted her to see the highlights when they were dry. My hair did take a little over an hour to dry but I did it myself with her heat lamp and blow dryer, using my own styling products. Unfortunately, she does not have a bonnet dryer which is what really speeds up curly hair drying time. We had even previously discussed how long my hair took and she scheduled me early in the day so she could do other customers while I tended to it myself. I also cleaned the floor of hair when I was done. To say that I felt bad afterwards is an understatement and we did not even discuss how my highlights turned out. I sometimes do freelance work and the price I quote a client is the price I charge them. If I want to change the price, I will do it the next time we work together and explain why in advance. And I certainly don't flare in anger at a customer who asks politely about the change in price.
