Ok, enough of my confessions. I love this place for getting unique home decor. There's a high inventory turnover so there's always something new and decently discounted. They're definitely not the cheapest path for home decor but they do provide the most variety. There's 4 locations that I'm aware of and have visited in Calgary but this one is my favourite for having the right combination of size, merchandise and proximity to Market Mall without the crazy mall crowd. There are times when the lines can be too long and the return policy window too short but I've also never had problems with staff in any Homesense location so +1 for customer service

Interesting people were out, cute dogs were being walked by their owners, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Part of my stroll was down the "hip" Uptown area of 17th Avenue. What drew me into Steeling Home from my walk was an on sale desk fan that was displayed outside on a cute antique table. The price was right, but I knew darn well that it would be hard to get it in the suitcase for my eventual trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I might still change my mind on that.... Anyway, I decided to stroll around inside and really enjoyed exploring the many pockets of interesting stuff this relatively small store holds. It has books, antiques, jewelery, and much more in-between. The people watching was fun too, with a fresh touch of Portlandia thrown in. I'm glad I stopped in and reminded myself that marching around a new City is fun, and stopping to explore some of its quirks is even better.

But I stayed because of their massive selection of Fair Trade handicrafts from around the globe. Well, that's not exactly true - I stayed because I didn't want to look like some freeloader crashing their party. But is exactly true that my desire to keep up appearances gave me more than ample time to peruse their wares. Ten Thousand Villages is located in an old 3-story house and has a great selection of jewellery, servingware, statues, and other home décor global treasures. They are also quick to refill the complimentary coffee pots, which is a bonus. I guess they care as much for their customers as they do for the native artisans that they represent. The coffee with a conscience being served up here is flavourful and fortunately available for purchase upstairs.

All that my gut was telling me when looking around was that most of what's there would be clutter in my house, which was a little disappointing. It would be cool and interesting clutter, but clutter nonetheless. The variety of products in this sizable store is impressive and they do sell tea, coffee, etc., but I would never make a special trip here just for that. Being that Christmas is coming, it's a good place to buy unique ornaments and stocking stuffers. Usually we select from the already made beautiful pieces on the floor. We have purchased some amazing plant arrangements in the past - but today we couldn't figure out what we wanted for a table we had just bought. We described the table and purpose to Jane Brown. Designer at the store. Jane showed us some vase and flower options and then designed and built the perfect arrangement just for us. She helped us put something together that is absolutely perfect for our space. We couldn't have done it without her help. Thank you !
