Fortunately for us, the museum was running a free admission Friday! Because of this, the museum was very busy, especially with a large group of students roaming around. The museum has two floors with several galleries to explore. On the first floor, I was captivated by the murals and hanging panels portraying the seasons and migration of tribes and herds. A separate downstairs gallery featured modern art pieces, and there was one particularly sobering piece on sexual abuse perpetuated by the Catholic Church. These pieces were quite heavy as you could feel the grief expressed by the artists. Upstairs felt different, showcasing Native pride through their regalia, bolos, and handmade jewelry. The upstairs galleries felt more celebratory of Native culture, drawing attention to their accomplishments and craftsmanship. Overall, the museum offers an eye-opening experience, and I left with a greater appreciation for Native art, culture, and collective lived experience.

She came recommended…read morefrom our hotel (5 graces) We told her at the beginning of the class that 2 of us had taken 2 years each of pottery/wheel throwing so it wasn't new to us. Yet she still spent an hour and 40 minutes of the class explaining things to us. We also casually chatted for a bit (20 minutes) when we first arrived while she was setting up (turns out that we were being charged for that time where she was setting up and we were just waiting). By the time she set up all our seats and had given her "instruction" we only had 20 minutes with hands on the clay. After that she took our pieces and did finishing touches on the base (which she took a long time to do while we were again just watching her). We also found out that she charged for this time as well. So the initial 2 hour class turned into a 3 and a half hour class where we only had hands on the clay for 20-30 minutes. It was clear she was dragging time out in order to surprise us with a larger payment charge at the end. I paid 1600$ for 3 people to essentially just watch her. She also does not accept credit cards which is very suspicious to me. I felt so sick to my stomach afterwards and I went straight to my hotel and spoke to the concierge since they recommended her. I felt robbed and sick that I could've donated that money to the less fortunate and it would've been more ethical spending. The concierge spoke to Heidi and she agreed to give us a 50% refund because of how little time we had with the clay. Weeks later she messaged me again to discuss shipping our pieces. Turns out that's another 200$ which somehow isn't considered in the previous cost. I turned down the offer to ship because I truly believe that this studio is a scam. If I could give this experience a 0 star I would but yelp requires at least one star so one it is. I would warn everyone to not take any classes at her studio and avoid it at all costs. It will put a damper on your santa fe trip.

I only knew this research facility when I lived in Santa Fe as SAR. I did contract archeological cartography for them for a couple of years. The cartography wasn't difficult, but getting each drawing and map approved was. They had a reputation for never approving the first work submitted. Always wanting everything perfect. Deadlines weren't the primary motivation, perfection was. There were always changes. But producing maps and drawings for some of the Grand Canyon Series of publications made me feel a real part of this prestigious institution and worth the trouble of working for perfectionists. This 100 year-old institution was initially established to study and research the archaeology and ethnology of the American Southwest. In the late 1960s the focus became more of a global one. The programs and activities of SAR today include research and study to advance archeology, anthropology and similar related disciplines. The School's many programs include a scholars-in-residence program, seminars and public lectures, and extensive Native American Indian Arts research programs. SAR has an annual Lecture Series and also provides field trips to noted archeological sites to its members. Membership is inexpensive and the benefits are enormous. 100 years of research is at your fingertips through their extensive library collections (the librarian was the librarian in the Laboratory of Anthropology for many years) and many research programs and publications. (Plus they always welcome volunteers.) Check out www.sarweb.org for complete information on this research institution that has been moving the anthropological study of the American Southwest and other areas of the world forward for over 100 years.

Founded in 1907, SAR is a residential center focused on the cultivation of innovative research in anthropology, broadly defined, as well as the work of Native American artists and writers. SAR offers residential fellowships to scholars and Native American artists through a competitive process. We host research seminars for scholars undertaking comparative, historically informed research that addresses critical issues of human social life. SAR's Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) stewards and makes available to scholars and artists one of the world's finest collections of Native American art from the Southwest. SAR Press publishes path-breaking books in anthropology, archaeology, Indigenous studies, and Native American art. The Catherine McElvain Library provides access to a significant collection of anthropological works and archival material related to Santa Fe history. Our membership program offers frequent lectures, field trips, and campus tours to the general public.
