After working for two years with another dog walking/pet sitting company, we moved out of their normal area of service, and had to find pet care on short notice. With a shy and anxious dog who is nervous of strangers and sometimes reactive to other dogs on leash, finding a trusted dog walker is no easy task. I found MMH on Yelp and gave them a call. Melissa called me back within 24 hours, and Sarah came out that week to meet me and my dog and assured me that Allison would be able to take care of our pup. As we still had a few walks scheduled with our previous walker, they even coordinated a time for Allison to join our old walker on one of their last visits and help our dog adjust to the change. Allison is amazing, and we are so lucky to have found her! She took the time to get to know and build trust with our dog. Our dog loves her, she sends the best photos and updates after each visit, and she really goes above and beyond to keep us informed of any concerns. We've worked with lots of great dog walkers over the years, but she is the best when it comes to communication. We have regularly scheduled weekly walking, but MMH has also always been able to accommodate our one-off requests. This is one of the benefits of working with a larger company. If we need a one-off walk, and Allison isn't available, MMH has always been able to find someone, and Allison regularly introduces our dog to other walkers so that there are multiple people who can fill in when needed. We've also used MMH for overnight, in-home care, and again, MMH has always been able to accommodate our requests and we've had positive experiences with all the walkers/sitters so far. read more

My review is primarily for the management team consisting of Melissa, Elise, and Jackie (note the boarders have been largely good). My concerns with this business can be summed up as: lack of fee transparency/moving goal posts and terrible communication. I recently relocated to the area and my anxious senior pups were exhibiting signs of aggression towards one another, which I disclosed to the team ahead of our first boarding appt. Fortunately, both boarding visits went well and the second boarder raved about how sweet and calm both dogs were throughout the visit, with only some minor growling one time. Fees: Upon booking my first boarding appt, the management team added $10 per day for medical administration (for longer stays, this would amount to a day or more of total fees). I contacted them to understand why it was being added as I've never had such a fee in all the years I've been working with professional boarders, and their meds simply get mixed in with their food and there's never been a problem with them not eating it. I was told it was "industry standard" and because of the extra effort required. I reluctantly agreed but soon learned it is not industry standard (all 6 of the local boarding businesses I contacted do not charge such a fee), and this felt disingenuous. I recently made a number of additional bookings, with two bookings in march separated by 2.5 days, and without my approval, they added two additional days of dog boarding to connect the two visits. I requested an adjustment to the booking thinking it was an honest mistake, only to receive a very condescending email from management telling me in the future they would automatically book additional days if stays were not separated by 2+ days because "its in the dog's best interest", "the dogs don't eat and won't take their meds", "it causes more behavioral problems", etc... none of which were issues that my dogs have had under their care that have been reported to me or under the care of other boarders. I contacted management again to understand why their contract terms were changing and again was met with the same condescending attitude of "we've been caring for animals for XX years, we know better than you do." Communication: There have been several instances of what I would describe as clunky (at best), if not altogether unprofessional and frankly disrespectful communication by the entire management team, including Melissa herself who decided to start insulting me over the phone when I pushed back on the new 2+ days stay separation requirement. They claim their med fees are industry standard, and they know that's not true. Maybe some other boarders do it, but don't tell your customers something is industry standard when you know it's not just so they'll be ok with it. If you push back on anything with them, they'll immediately become defensive and dismissive, speaking to you like you have no idea how to care for your dogs - citing potential risks and issues that have not otherwise been noted or are issues at all. And if you persist and continue advocating for yourself as a customer, good luck, you'll be met with all manner of excuse making about why things are your fault and even likely get the owner herself insulting you over the phone. I've never had the misfortune of working with a management team like this, so I will gladly be taking my business elsewhere. Can't wait to see what their defensive response is (if any), but please feel free to reach out to me with any questions and I'd be happy to share to avoid other customers having the same experience. 1/3/24 Update: There's Melissa's review. Not surprised at all and won't take the time to point out the multiple lies and inconsistencies (I have receipts) or her not addressing key concerns I outlined and instead resorting to insults and personal attacks... again. Melissa's private home boarding is incredible. It was our first time trying any pet sitting service and we are so glad we found her through Nextdoor. From the first phone call, Melissa made my husband and I feel completely at ease, and when she came to our home to meet our pup, Holly, we knew right away our girl would be in good hands. We've gone on 2 trips now and Melissa always made sure to keep me updated with plenty of photos and texts. During our first trip, we extended a day and Melissa was able to accommodate us no problem. She was also able to help train my pup with some better meal time habits (she's a very picky eater). Holly always has a ton of fun and other pups to play with during her sleepovers. I have been extensively trained with each of my accounts so that I can confidently complete walks and visits independently while clients carry on with their work, vacations or other plans as they arise. We use a brand new app that allows clients to communicate with us, schedule appointments, and share the cutest pics of their fur babies! Melissa met with them and assigned a member of her staff to do a pet sit. During the long dog sit (about 3 weeks) one of the dogs got sick and Melissa cut her vacation short, came to the home and took over the job as she suspected one of the dogs was very ill. She took the dog to 3 vets and it turned out the dog had cancer. She set up the entire treatment plan and accompanied the dog to get treatment, coordinating with my friend the entire time, and did not even charge extra. Our sweet baby Tony, who is a three year old black lab mix rescue, is very shy and a bit scared of strangers but right off the bat with Chelse he was in love. He gets so excited whenever he sees her. I was searching for a place to board my cat in the South Bay. There were very few options, but I found Melissa's Mutt Hut & Cat Shack providing in-home pet visits/sitting among other services, like overnight in-home stays, dog walking, etc. I was in a hurry and leaving for a weekend getaway on Friday, Melissa was amazing and came to my house within an hour for the first-time consultation. Melissa brought her portfolio to show me pictures of all her happy doggie and kitty customers, it was lovingly put together and by all the thorough questions she asked me I was able to tell that this lady is a pro with pets and she treats each one as if they were her own. She also has a team of 30 or so employees that I did not interact with but I would imagine that they would have to be very well-trained and thorough pet lovers to make it past Melissa! She provided the pet visits (AM/PM) I requested over the weekend while I was away and it was especially important because my cat was recovering from an injury/attack so she needed 2 types of medicine 2x/day AND warm compresses on her neck - Melissa made sure my cat was comfortable with the whole process before I left so she wouldn't be scared while I was away. While I was away, Melissa called and/or text messaged me after each visit to let me know that my cat was recovering well. When I returned my cat was doing better than ever and I know she appreciated having the company and attention of each 45-60 minute visit. When I was looking for this service, I called Melissa's Mutt Hut as well as a service I found called "FETCH" which says they provide a similar repertoire of services. I left a message with both companies and FETCH never called me back, I've never heard from them to this day. That does not bode well for me at all given Melissa's MH/CH called me back the next morning (following in accordance with such a promise made on their voicemail) and so I felt very confident leaving this company with access to my home and my precious under-the-weather feline!!! Melissa and her "Mutt Hutters" are my HERO! I really didnt know what to expect when we started looking around for dogwalkers. I've seen plenty of dogwalkers at the dog park where we would take our Boxer - and they always had packs of dogs and just stood off to the side and let them run wild, get into fights and just plain ol' wreak havoc.(for $15bucks an hour) Not what I wanted for MY baby :) So I was less-the-thrilled when our careers took us away from the house long enough during the day that a dog-walker was pretty much a requirement (for everyone's sanity) I contacted Melissa - and was thrilled from my first phone call. She and Goldie are sweet and engaging and you can really tell how much they love what they do and LOVE dogs. Melissa came out to the house, met with us and Brooklyn (our pup) and explained her entire service.(she even gave us a mini-training class - with tips that we still use everyday) This is not your regular dogwalking service -this is legit! She assessed our dogs personality (and hyperness) and set us to meet with our "mutt hutter" to make sure we liked/trusted him/her. I really appreciated the time and thoroughness Melissa took during this initial stage. You are trusting total strangers with your beloved animals, AND access to your house - so you better make sure you feel comfortable. We have our MH come 4x a week and our dog is SOOOO much happier. Its ridiculous (and SOOO much more well behaved on the leash) When we started having additional issues with aggressiveness- after having our Mutt Hutter for a few months (Brooklyn is a LOT to handle), Melissa came out to our place on the weekend to meet with us to discuss and see how she and her Mutt Hutters could help. I cant explain how impressed I was that Melissa would take such interest in the behavior of our dog and how sincere she takes the safety, wellbeing and care of each client (and her staff) I would highly recommend Melissa's Mutt Hutt to anyone looking/needing extra help with their poooches. I've used Melissa's services twice. Once with a dog that I was fostering and a most recently with a dog I adopted. My pup was found wandering the streets of South Central Los Angeles. Her fur was matted and she was in bad shape. When I first met my pup she was sweetly sleeping in the rescue where 20 or so amazing dogs were running around. My first couple days home with her were fantastic and unreal (no separation issues, great with people and dogs), however after a bit I noticed that she would charge after dogs and start aggressively barking at them. I panicked and called Melissa who met with us for three hours. She suggested that we take our dogs (both hers and mine) out together to help my girl learn to be a member of a pack. Mind you-Melissa is a spitfire on speed so wear comfortable shoes because both you and your animal will be working! Throughout our walk, Melissa asked questions, shared her vast knowledge of animal psychology, bravely went up to strangers on the street to show me numerous times how to introduce my pet safely, and served as my personal therapist. She tells it like it is and her number one priority is ensuring animals and their humans have the best life possible. After our walk she hand wrote some notes, then the next day emailed some follow up notes as well. I feel comfortable asking her questions any time of day and I even texted her in a complete panic when the dog I was fostering ingested a bag of chocolate chips! On the rare occasions that we are home when the Mutthutter arrives, we get to see our two Bernese Mountain dogs go absolutely insane greeting with unparalleled joy! We are so happy with the individualized care our fur kids have received during the year and a half we have been with Melissa. We love to read about their daily adventures around the neighborhood. The Mutthutters are even careful to record whether potty has been accomplished which is definitely helpful info!! Best of all, the fur kids are calm and well exercised when we come home from work. Communication is always prompt and thorough, whether via phone, text, email or in person. We have such peace of mind knowing the kids are in good hands especially on our longer trips out of town. Melissa's Mutt Hutt is the best! My husband and I cannot speak more highly of Melissa's team. We have been using Melissa for walking and sitting services for approximately a year and a half. During this period our expectations have been continuously surpassed. Melissa and her team treat our dog as if he were part of their family. Their care, professionalism, flexibility, detail-oriented nature and enthusiasm are exceptional. In addition, Melissa and her staff are incredibly accessible and responsive through both email and text messaging. Our dog is always thrilled to see his Mutt Hutt friends and reading the journal entries recording their itineraries keeps us up to speed. Recently while we were on vacation and our dog was boarding, he came down with a cold. We were advised that he could be quarantined there but that it might be better for him to be picked up and taken care of at home. As it was over the Christmas vacation, Melissa's Mutt Hutt team was fully booked. However, that did not stop Melissa and her colleagues from springing into action. Within hours, our dog's weekly walker Jeff was able to rearrange his schedule to allow him to tend to our dog for the following six days. Jeff picked up our dog, took him to the veterinarian and brought him home with antibiotics. The next morning when our dog was not responsive and had seemed to decline further, Jeff was in touch with us and with Melissa, and a decision was made to take him to an emergency facility. Jeff took him to the emergency room, waited with him, and met with the medical staff. It is far from an understatement to say that in the absence of Jeff and Melissa's care, our dog may not have survived. All of the doctors with whom we have met have echoed that sentiment. He wound up in the hospital for four nights and five days. While our dog was hospitalized and in an isolation ward, Jeff took the time to visit our dog and report to us about his well being. Melissa, Jeff and Jeannie continued to be in touch with us to discuss continuing care and how we could make our dog most comfortable once being released from the hospital. Since our dog has been home and on a modified exercise routine, Melissa and her team have increased the frequency of our dog's walks while decreasing the duration of each walk to accommodate his recovery needs. All of the adjustments have occurred seamlessly. The level of receptivity and the concern Melissa, Jeff and Jeannie have shown for our dog's health is simply unparalleled. Our dog has made a full recovery and respiratory endurance has improved dramatically. We did our research before hiring Melissa's Mutt Hutt to walk our dog and she and her team are the best!
