I was on the internet one Friday night and the cutest ad for a puppy available through a nearby rescue came up. The next day having no plans, I decided to drive to Lovejoy and if the pup was a female and available I'd adopt her! I met Erin Lovejoy upon my arrival and told her I was there for this specific puppy. She was still available! My dog was quarantine at this location, and this place mistreated her. When I picked her up, her paws were yellow from urine and she smelt like feces. After a few days she started acting odd, she ended getting a really bad case of kennel cough. I had to take her to urgent care and started meds. The officer kept telling me this place was a great place for quarantine dogs but this is NOT true. read more

Had a great experience adopting a pet but have been finding it really hard to get a return call for the spay and neuter appointment. Adopted our dog last year, then they lost funding for this even though it's part of the contract. I would recommend that if it is in your contract then you should plan the appointment while there. Because at this point it has been hard to get someone to respond to my calls and texts to schedule the appointment, even though I referenced the contract. read more

I adopted a small dog from THE LOVEJOY FOUNDATION IN EL SEGUNDO, CA and discovered that not only did the dog have the worst case of Kennel Cough I have ever encountered but also that ERIN, the head of the foundation was not at all honest in her promise to return my money the next day if the dog had any major problems that would preclude my keeping her. As I was filling out forms I asked her several times if the money would be returned if the dog had some major problem and SHE ASUURED ME SHE WOULD REURN THE MONEY RIGHT AWAY IF IT TURNED OUT THE DOG WAS SICK OR UNMANGEBLE. She insisted I pay the $500 adoption fee and kept telling me she was honorable and would stick to her promise regarding the dog and the money. OTHERWISE i NEVER WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE DOG HOME. i waited several weeks and got a note saying they have deposited my money but no money has ever been returned to me. I wrote Erin several times and still have not heard a thing from her. I caution anyone who is thinking of adopting a dog from THE LOVEJOY FOUNDATION not to do so. read more

What a fantastic organization. These people are caring for so many dogs in need. All of the dogs are well cared for and attended to they really are helpful and caring. We just adopted a young female from them this weekend and couldn't be happier. They did a good job of making sure we were a good fit for the pup without being the gate keepers of the canine species. A simply ONE page application and an interview and we were all set. We didn't plan on taking the little girl home with us that day but it was love at first sight. This organization is impressive. We got our latest lil' pup 5 years ago from Lovejoy and they've had our back the whole way, including an emergency situation that required short-notice boarding. I really enjoy working with the team and they do one heck of a job taking in an impressive # of animals, and being very business-like about the adoption process, post-adoption shots, etc. Two more items: Personally, I don't think it's realistic for LoveJoy to save so many animals **and** be expected to also be front-line individualized healthcare. Big issues, of course that's appropriate. But I depend on our household vet to partner with me for lifetime health and wellness support. Erin running a big, complex operation so I don't think it's realistic to expect her to be a post-adoption concierge. LoveJoy is good about offering follow-up shots at a very good price. And, as I said, Erin personally was really there for us in an emergency. But she is very business-like as she's got a lot going on, saving MANY four-legged. read more

Hello guys. I'm here to raise awareness of THE NEGLECT THIS RESCUE BRINGS TO ANIMALS ! We rescued our puppy from here, filled out our application. Paid our $600 fee for our pet, which was supposed to include all vaccinations, neutering, etc. Erin was very avid that we send pictures of tinys poops DAILY! She was very helpful with us through the first few months. The Lovejoy foundation offered puppy daycare which was said to "be isolated". Meaning, not completely vaccinated puppies were separated which sounded great! 10 days before he was SUPPOSED to receive his shot, we brought him to puppy daycare where the volunteer asked us "is he here for his shots" we specified "NO THEY ARENT DUE FOR 10 DAYS".. however on this day those shots were administered and Erin said "it should be fine" however. A week later tiny is pooping what looks like intestines, blood and is intensively vomiting. My mom and I grew concerned due to the wrongfully administered vaccination. We message Erin the pictures of the bloody stool and vomit and she said "he's vaccinated, couldn't be Parvo, just wait it out".. He didn't eat that day so we took him to the vet. He was treated on IV for 4 days and eventually on the 5th day he drank water and the 6th day he ate food. The vets couldn't release him until they knew he was able to ingest food. Thankfully City Line Pet Clinics vet was the best and saved tiny. We continued to reach out to Erin about what was going on and received no responses. Prior to tiny being released, they asked us to bring the other two dogs in to be sure they weren't sick for tiny. His immune system was week so they were trying to avoid any more antibiotics. We took our dogs and both of them were treated to kennel cough. Our dogs only go in walks around the neighborhood. Kennel cough is transferred when dogs socialize. Meaning Erin allowed an UNFULLY (wrongfully administered) vaccinated dog socialize with another dog. The owner is disrespectful, fake and incompetent at taking accountability. After working with animals for so long, you would think prioritizing the animals well-being would be the utmost important foundation of any rescue. DO NOT WORK WITH THIS RESCUE THEY ARE A MONEY FOCUSED ORGANIZATION She is reckless, and if you read other reviews this is still happening THIS YEAR! there's ATLEAST 50 other better organizations I can recommend without an experience like this! read more

First, I am very grateful that rescues exist. And given the recent animal shelter overcrowding thanks to breeders, wanted to welcome another dog into my home. I found a match for a dog on the petfinder website and saw that they host an open house on weekends, so I went to meet the dog - a 45 minute trip. While Erin was nice, I only briefly interacted with her. The other person that was there was disrespectful - asked me a question and literally turned and walked away while I was answering (as if she urgently needed a bathroom), and then came back a few minutes later only to be outright rude. I had reservations anyway because their adoption fees are the highest I've seen, but I figured if they treat the dogs well, it's worth it. But this was the most unpleasant visit I could have imagined. If you really want to help rescue dogs, help potential adopters find the right match by telling them about the dogs instead of being annoyed with them for asking. We wanted to adopt a pup and found this dog, Apple through Petfinder. We contacted the site and got an email from Lovejoy asking us to fill out an application. We did and submitted and got a email response maybe a week later, which is good considering how popular it is to adopt a dog at the moment (quarantine/covid). The lady said to come by before 11-5 and I said that we should be there a little after 11. She asked if we could come at 11:30 and I said sure. When we rolled up, there were a few people in the tent, meeting various dogs. We checked in and was asked to wait in our car until we were called. She said it should take maybe 15-20 mins. I pointed to where we were parked and we went and sat. Someone left, so we pulled up in their spot, until finally we were almost in front of the place. But no one came out for almost an hour, then the vet walked by and asked us if we've been helped. We told her we were waiting and she apologized and they saw us shortly after. They apologized, I guess since we moved up a bit, they assumed we'd left. We did move our car up, so we understood. We got to visit with Apple, who we originally applied for. She was nice, but a little aggresive. We weren't sure, but the owner told us we had priority so if we wanted her, we could take her. We asked to see another similar dog if possible and they showed us Sunshine, who was a bit gentler and such a sweetheart. I am a first time dog owner so she was a better fit. We went ahead and adopted Sunshine, now Meatball. The shelter is great and you can tell they really care about the animals. The dog had a bit of diarrhea because they had switched the brand of food recently. She provided us a list of recommended items to get, including the brand of food they recommended, what kind of treats and suggested adding pumpkin to her food to help with the diarrhea. I found my first child here! I was honestly so sad and disappointed when we arrived and the pups we wanted online were already in the process of adoption. Upon walking out, a volunteer who knew what we were looking for asked if we wanted to meet a dog about to be surrendered. The dog turned out to be our forever rescue. We've been coming here for his shots and even boarding. To be perfectly honest, I've become such a helicopter doggo mom, I was anxious and worried the entire 5 days he was boarded while we traveled. Also, not advised to read horror stories online because my doom scrolling made me more stressed when I read about other dog stories about PTSD. Luckily, upon pick up, my pup ran at me excitedly and there's nothing wrong w/ him at all. I adopted a puppy back in January of 2021 and he is the best! Unfortunately the Lovejoy Foundation is not. 1. When I brought my puppy in for his vaccines, the people working there said not to have puppies interact with each other as they were unvaccinated which makes complete sense. While waiting in line, the owner of Lovejoy came out and brought other puppies faces within inches of my puppy so they could 'say hi to each other'. 2. My puppy was having stomach issues and I emailed & texted with the owner of Lovejoy. She kept saying not to worry even after sending pictures of his 'movements.' Good thing I didnt listen - I brought him into the vet who said he had a parasite that needed medication. 3. Lovejoy offers spay & neuters through their facility as part of the adoption fee (which I was able to get my company to do a donation match) - unfortunately Lovejoy was too busy which is understandable. You had a couple options: One was to go to a clinic on their list and it would be covered. The other option was to go to your own vet and get reimbursed for a portion of the cost once provided proof. It's been over 5 months and I have not yet received my reimbursement. I have continued to email and text regularly. I have been told "it's in the mail" then they asked me for my paypal / zelle account to send electronically. I still have yet to receive the reimbursement after MULTIPLE attempts. I love my puppy and what a rescue organization does - however I am extremely disappointed with Lovejoy foundation. read more

My husband and I have been looking to adopt a dog from a rescue organization for the last few weeks. We looked on Petfinder, the local animal shelters, and even other rescue organizations. We found the Lovejoy Foundation through Yelp initially. We liked their mission and it was a bonus that they were nearby. It also helped how they keep their social media and YouTube page up to date. We decided to go to the adoption event last Saturday. Tip for parking: Street parking; it was free on Saturday afternoon when we went but check the meters. When we got there, it was really crowded. It was nice to see how the staff took the necessary COVID19 precautions with asking everyone to wear masks and gloves. We actually went in the afternoon, thinking that most of the dogs will be adopted but it was important for us to trust whoever we were going to adopt from them. About an hour in, we didn't see the dog for us but as we were about to leave, one of the volunteers, Katie, was helping someone else who was looking through the available dogs YouTube video and Katie suggested we meet Nickle. We waited and when Nickle came out to meet us, he immediately was drawn to us. After spending about four hours with him, it was a done deal for us. We are so lucky to have this sweet boy. After we signed the adoption papers and paid the $450 (try to bring cash so that you don't have to pay the credit card fee), Erin went over some house rules with us. You can tell she's knowledgable in this area. The fee is actually SO affordable as it includes the vaccinations, microchip, neuter/spay, deworming/defleaing, and even a couple training sessions. On top of that, you can't beat the overall support from Erin. Even in the middle of a pandemic, she is quick to respond to any questions or concerns I have. You can adopt anywhere but I highly suggest researching the mission and overall character of who's behind these organizations. One week into living with my forever rescue dog, I can't thank Erin and her excellent team at Lovejoy Foundation for introducing me to him. My first and lasting impression is that Erin, Jessica, Pancho, and I'm sure others I haven't spoken to, are all equally professional and caring and the well-being of the animals they are caring for is second to none. The application process is thorough and detailed, which is understandable, as Erin and her team are ensuring the safety and quality of life for a deserving pet for the rest of it's life. The services the team offers before, during, and after adoption are premium quality. Obedience training, grooming, boarding while traveling- all concerns are considered and solutions are offered. Erin is a pleasure to talk to and her interview process is actually a relief, because you know immediately that her top priority is the animals and right-fit homes. On the day we scheduled my pick up of my little guy he was relaxed, in a great frame of mind, and ready to come home. They had taken care of every detail- final bathing, dew claws trimmed, all paperwork shared. Our first week at home has been excellent. Important for all prospective parents to remember: if your new buddy damages something of value- that's on you- not the animal who is simply excited and overjoyed to have a space to share with a loving forever family. I'm so grateful to have found The Lovejoy Foundation! In June, my boyfriend and I decided to adopt a puppy. I knew Zoom Room in Redondo Beach held adoptions on the weekend and it was hosted by The Lovejoy Foundation. They didn't have puppies at this location but on the same day, they were also at Global Pet in Redondo Beach with more dogs and puppies for adoption. The litter of puppies I was drawn to had the saddest story. The mom, Spirit, and her pups were rescued in Tijuana. They were found inside a trash can with the lid being weighed down by rocks. Who would in their right mind do such I thing?!?! Out of the three puppies was one male and I was smitten from the start. My boyfriend and I talked with Erin and went through the application and interview process right away. She wanted to make sure that we were able to handle taking care of an 8 week puppy because they need a lot of attention. Erin went through all the details included in the adoption fee (deflea, deworm, all vaccinations, microchip and neutering). Also we were given two private training sessions with their dog trainer, Jessica. After a couple of days we took our puppy, Pinto, home with us. We had no problems with him until a couple weeks later. We noticed he was itching a lot. We notified Erin because she had mentioned to let her know if there's any problems. We found out that his siblings were also having itch problems and found out it was mange. Erin provided medication for all three of them, no charge. This was sort of a blessing in disguise because I was able to get in contact with the people who adopted Pinto's siblings. So far we have had two playdates and will continue to have them. Our family had recently been undergoing a lengthy puppy adoption with a bonded set of brothers through the org Star Paws in Palisades. This process involved an application submission with college entrance type essay, a park visit in Pasadena to meet with the pups, and finally a home visit to check our property to make sure it fit what the foster thought the puppies needed. The whole process was about 3 weeks, from application to home visit. We had a contract in hand and our daughters were excited about our new additions. Until the foster decided she didn't want to give them up, and left us devastated. Knowing there were lots of dogs out there needing a home, I subscribed to petfinder and adoptapet sites. A set of puppies met my specifications and I couldn't stop thinking about them, and decided to visit Lovejoy Foundation during their weekly adoption fairs, since it was literally a 5 minute drive from our house. Their site was clean and organized, and very open to visitors. They have so many pets needing homes! We were able to sit down to meet the litter we had come to see, and immediately fell in love. During our visit with the pups, we filled out an application, were inverviewed, and a google street view was done of our property. Erin is the founder and accepted our application on the spot, which enabled us to really bond with our new boy. Their adoption fees cover a spay/neuter, shots and microchip, and two hours training with their onsite trainer (at your place or theirs). They do all their vet work in-house with a vet which means it's cheaper for you, and also do boarding and grooming there as well. Since our boy is only 5 weeks, we have a few more weeks left to get him, but Erin encourages us to come by whenever we have time, so we can bond. Such a great rescue to work with, and they have so many cute dogs needing homes! Every Saturday and Sunday is an adoption fair, and it's so wonderful what they've done for these animals. read more

I have never seen a more well organized rescue than the Lovejoy foundation. We spent five hours at the last adoption event and found our dream dog! It was clear during our interview and the communication since getting our dog the care and consideration Erin and volunteers have towards the animals they rescue (all the animals are either strays and owner surrenders). To have a CEO of a huge foundation give out her contact information so that we could reach out to her and constantly get responses back is so above and beyond the obligation of a rescue organization. We got a puppy from here a few weeks ago. We were instructed to send photos of his poop for the first few days. Upon the 4th day, we noticed that the puppy's poop was the texture of soft serve and shortly after, there started to be blood in his stool. Also, the puppy started to look skinnier and we could see more of his ribs exposed. We immediately reached out to the director, but didn't get a response, so reached out to our family vet that we've been using for years. Our family vet was able to see us right away that morning. Upon arriving to the vet, they checked him for all of the typical puppy diseases (parvo, parasites, coccidia, heart worm, etc). The results came back, and the puppy had giardia. The vet mentioned that this is common amongst puppies coming from shelters, due to the spaces they are confined to, feces in their water etc. We then sent another text to the director explaining the diagnosis from the vet, and at that time she text back, telling us to keep her posted on the puppies progress. $650 later, we reached out to the director asking if this has happened before, and if we could be refunded some of our payment made towards the adoption, due to the inconvenience. She then sent out this long drawn out response, stating that there was nothing she would do, and that we should have used in her in-house vet. We responded telling her that her reviews stated that her in house vet was not trained, as someone else had trouble boarding their dog they received from the foundation, due to the boarding company not accepting the vaccines that came from the Love Joy Foundation. We did not feel comfortable getting the puppy treated there, as we did not want to run into similar issues as well as our vet was more responsive in getting us in right away. Please be careful of getting a dog from here. DO YOUR RESEARCH! READ THE REVIEWS! This has been a terrible experience, and we are just thankful that our family vet was able to step in, and take care of our puppy. read more

This place is great! We just adopted our first dog here who was 3months old. They gave him a quick bath before letting us hold him and immediately you could tell he was the one we wanted. Very friendly and happy dog who was comfortable in this surrounding and with the owner of this foundation. The adoption process took a little long but we could appreciate the time the employees took asking us a lot of questions and educating us how to handle this breed and properly train him. We are new dog owners and appreciated all of the information given. Adoption fee includes all of the shots and neutering too which is great! Of course I appreciate the work done by non-profit pet adoption organizations, their staff and selfless volunteers, but our experience at Lovejoy has left us with the impression that this organization is not always honest, ethical, or well organized. When we attended their adoption event, the dog that caught our eye had a placard on her kennel stating that she was six years old. Soon after we wrapped up the adoption proceedings, they told us they thought she was actually 10 years old! After getting her home we had to clean her up. Her hair was so shaggy she couldn't see. During her first bath the water coming off of her was black with filth. When we trimmed her hair we discovered a deep cut under her eye and found multiple ticks on her. She had been at Lovejoy for four months and it's hard to believe she had been left in this condition. They also told us that she wasn't microchipped. I returned on a Sunday to have her chipped. At this time I was informed that she actually WAS chipped. I asked about the chip ID number and was told that they were too busy to provide me with any additional information, but that they would email me in a few days. Of course I never heard from them. I followed up with several emails before finally receiving the chip ID number. When I contacted the chip registry I was told that her chip had originally been activated in August of 2008, making her at least 13 years old! Over $500 was paid to adopt this dog. We are very happy with her but I would never adopt from Lovejoy again. read more

I have to give them a five star rating especially in these times when the demand for adopted pets is so high! I was very lucky to a found my Shepard mix puppy there, She is beautiful and when I picked her up I could tell how well taken care of she was the people that run and manage this place especially Erin are 100+ % devoted to the animals well-being And care. Erin is very experienced and knows much about dogs and their care, and has given me some really good advice, having been a previous dog owner I thought I knew most basic things but there's still some things that the typical dog owner (me) just wouldn't think of. That said, the adoption price and all the things that are included (shots, microchip, spay or neuter, etc.. including follow up services are very reasonable and really, I can't put a price tag on the satisfaction happiness and love of having a dog like Bella! They also include two hours of at home training and I'm guessing now with the Covid issues that will probably take a while to book out but I really feel that I made a great choice and was lucky to find this place! My advice is whatever you decide to do you definitely need to be patient in these difficult times because the adoption rates have increased 5 fold and they're just doing the best possible under the circumstances! read more

Lovejoy has a years long history of re-homing puppies with distemper that they have yet to address. It is inhumane for the dogs and heartbreaking for the owners who trust they are taking home a healthy new pet. I would strongly recommend adopting from a different animal rescue service. read more

Lovejoy seems cute, but unfortunately has had multiple outbreaks of distemper among thier puppies. It was heartbreaking and expensive to care for a new puppy as it died from this preventable disease. Worst of all, Lovejoy refuses to acknowledge that they were the source of the distemper despite multiple owners coming forward. I would reccommend looking elsewhere for your new pup at least until they admit what has happened and put forward a clear and transparent plan to address this issue. read more

In my experience this organization is horrid. Dangerous, communicable diseases are spread and lied about. After my wife and I's miserable several weeks dealing with them I honestly wanted to move on and put things behind us, no i did not post a review, but I've just recently found out that not only did another couple go through an even more horrifying experience, Erin lied to them repeatedly about her history with sick animals. No one deserves to go through what my family or these other families have, and I feel the need to warn people away from this organization however I can. My wife and I adopted two puppies from the Lovejoy foundation two years ago. Both died shortly after our adopting them. One suffered through weeks of seizures in our arms during visits and being unable or unwilling to eat and drink before being put down before we could even take her home. Weeks later we would find out that 6 other puppies in her litter were returned to the organization due to illness and had to be put down, but we were never informed of what illness caused the issues. After a convincing apology from Erin we adopted through Lovejoy a second time and this time took the puppy home. What followed was a grueling week of medical issues, forced syringe feeding, missed sleep and work, culminating in emergency hospitalization, where veterinarians independent from this organization told us that not only did our puppy have distemper, but due to the lack of development in the lungs, there was virtually no chance the puppy liter was the age we were told, not nearly old enough to be adopted out. We had to put that puppy down when he failed to resume breathing on his own. I am no veterinarian, I have never owned a dog before. I can confidently say the medical issues faced that week were well beyond anything new dog owners could deal with. Despite that the best advice we were given by Erin was to continue force feeding the dog the medicated food provided by her in house veterinarian (?) who we never met or spoke directly to, nevermind the fact that this food had molded. Due to the second puppy's emergency weekend vet admittance we ended up having to visit two separate veterinary organizations over the week we had the puppy. Both vet facilities were stunned at the information we relayed second hand from Lovejoy, and on the distemper diagnosis, both notified the city of the disease. I cannot help what happened from there, but in any forum I can, I will make sure that people know this organization's history with distemper and sick animals. read more

This is a fantastic foundation. I needed to find a reputable organization that would take in a puppy found on the streets in Mexico. My elderly dog had gotten very sick and I couldn't foster the puppy anymore. Not only was Erin quick to respond, she was competent, compassionate and very easy to work with. She really went above and beyond to help me handle my tough situation and I felt really good about where the puppy was going. She has since given me updates on the puppy and continues to ask about my elderly dog. I never thought I'd be ok giving a dog up but I knew she was in such good hands with Erin and Lovejoy that I felt confident she would find a better home and have fun and be safe along the way. After the passing of my two beloved dogs, we decided to try pet adoption as we know there are many pets being displaced due to the pandemic. We found a Yorkie in this shelter that we eventually adopted as well as a one-eye cat. The foundation told us at time of adoption that we would need to bring the dog back for neutering. Later, we received an email informing us that they will not be doing it as the provider they used is closed temporarily due to shortage of staff and COVID concerns. However, the foundation will reimburse us $75 for taking the dog to the vet for the service as long as we provide proof. We did that, we requested the reimbursement since end of May and am still waiting for a response. I believe the foundation should act in good faith and I am really disappointed with their practice. read more

We adopted our dachshund mix puppy from the Lovejoy Foundation on Feb 22, and after a few weeks we still could not be happier with this little girl. The adoption process is thorough but not too cumbersome, and Erin is extremely dedicated to the safety and well-being of their pups. Coming from a first time dog mom, she's also exactly who you want holding your hand as you get acquainted with your new family member, which can come with some scary moments. One of those moments came when our puppy ran into some digestive issues a few days after bringing her home. I reached out to Erin to tell her what was going on, and she offered a ton of advice and support. When it got to a point she could no longer coach me on what to do via text, she offered to take over so she could provide 24 hour care until she was better. I was a mess, but Erin remained calm and coaxed us through it. Sure enough our baby was back to her happy hungry self after a few days, and it's been smooth sailing ever since! We love the LoveJoy Foundation! We are so happy with our new furbaby, Kobe. I will say there are a few reviews on here that might make you slightly hesitant, but I truly believe that Erin and her team are 100% devoted to 1) giving these animals a new, healthy start, 2) ensuring that they go to a safe, happy and loving home and 3) being a resource on-call for any questions us new parents might have. We went there on a Saturday to adopt a new puppy, and although a bit hectic since everyone is trying to adopt given the current climate, Erin and her team worked to the best of their ability to keep things organized and spend time with each and every person. Erin is super experienced and has so much innate knowledge about their care, any issues that might come up, etc. Kobe got a bit sick (tired and diarrhea) his third day home and Erin was literally a call or text away to get advice on how to handle him. We sent her multiple pics of his poop (haha) and she hopped on calls with us to ensure we were taking the right steps and knew what to look out for that could actually be concerning. He quickly recovered (we think he was adjusting to new home, new food, etc.) is a totally healthy and happy puppy. The adoption price is super reasonable and includes shots, microchip, spay or neuter, etc., AND can't forget a 24/7 available person to ask any questions to (Erin). We feel like we hit the jackpot with Lovejoy and Kobe and highly HIGHLY recommend getting your fur baby from there! Agreed with the user below as well - be patient with ANY shelter as they're doing their best to handle this crazy influx of requests. :) read more

I came to this place on July 9 and all of the staff was nice, respectful, and overall made it such a good experience. There was this one white woman with dark brown hair who was super disrespectful and started screaming and hitting these puppies for trying to climb out. They were just happy to see people trying to pet them and being around them. Honestly I feel bad for these dogs that there's someone like this woman in charge of them. All of these dogs were wonderful and so amazing and I hope they all are able to find homes and not be around this woman. I hope this woman gets fired and is not allowed to be around animals anymore. Just in general I have a horrible feelings about this lady. Other then that person i had a great time. read more
