Just arrived around 12 midnight. I've been here numerous times but I haven't written a review. The drinks are good and inexpensive if you like hookah they have an extensive selections of flavors. They have amazing specials on bottles.Something to do for me because I live in the neighborhood and they stay open to 4am. Also there's no cover to get in I'm assuming because they make all their money through the drinks and food. The only issue I have that really annoyed me is they have no versatility in music it was pure Spanish/reggaeton for an hour straight music is a big thing for me. My friends and I stopped in to this hookah bar on a Sunday evening at 745pm, looking forward to a great evening. Despite the sign outside the establishment stating 7:30 opening time, we were immediately turned away by the staff upon walking inside, who stated that his restaurant didn't open until 8:30pm. Had the establishment posted accurate hours of operation, we would not have have wasted valuable time and parking. Furthermore, the nonchalant demeanor of the staff was beyond disrespectful and and immediate turn off. Came here on a Sunday night for some drinks, we said we were only going to stay an hour or so but that didn't happen. We were seated pretty quickly since it was 11pm on a Sunday but around 1230 the place was packed. They have drink specials Sunday through Thursday and a decent variety of hookah and fruit. The dj plays a variety of music... spanish, old school, new hip hop, edm.. etc. Not exactly sure what the dress code is bc some people were dressed up and others were wearing shorts and sneakers. 1 star for the music and the vibe inside the club. Everything else from the abusive bouncers to the high priced drinks as 1 stall bathrooms was horrible. If you pay by card don't bother leaving a tip as they charge you already for it. The bouncer will literally see you step outside for a second then throw a tantrum when you try to come back in. I got pushed aside by a bouncer after just telling them that I was going to step outside for some fresh air with my friend. We asked to get stamped so we wouldn't have a problem coming back in but were told by the bouncer that they don't do stamps that they will remember us. When we try to go back in there was a different bouncer and he slightly pushes me with his knuckles. It wasn't hard but it was still a push. Then he turns around and gets in my friends face to yell at her for trying to pull me into to the place as if she was sneaking me in. I tell the bouncer that we were just in there and he didn't have to push me and he calls me a liar that he never put his hands on my and that now I couldn't get back into the club. I was 2 seconds away from calling the police because my stuff was in the club that the now butthurt bouncer was denying me access too. Mind you we were celebrating my wife's birthday we were dressed up a party of 6 ready to spend money and they did not accommodate us. It was early in the evening and the place was empty... go figure. Well, what can I say? Every time I go to a restaurant without checking Yelp I get burned. My record in that regard is 100%. In this case, it would have saved me from one of the worst restaurants I've been to in a long time. I knew there was going to be a problem when I asked for some water and the waitress, without saying anything, brought over bottles of Poland Spring. The reason: there's a "problem with the sewer" so it is restaurant policy to not serve tap water. What a total hunk of B.S. First of all, if the water isn't good enough to drink, it isn't good enough to wash the dishes or make food or make ice, and as a matter of fact they ought to shut down the place. But like a dummy I say, OK, fine, and then I look and I see there is ice in the glass. The manager happens to be there so I ask, if the water is bad how can you make ice? He says, "that's different." I guess they truck in water from New Jersey to make the ice. So either the water is undrinkable because of a sewage main break, or they are violating the health code by refusing to serve water to customers because they want them to buy bottle water. We were then penalized for not walking out by some of the worst food and service I've ever had in Astoria, which of course has some terrific restaurants. The humus and babaganoush were provided in tiny portions barely enough for one person, and were far inferior to what you can pick up in the supermarket for $4 a pound. They were out of half the stuff on the menu: no fish, no soup, no this no that. The main courses sucked. Tough steak, tough lamb. My few chunks of "lamb cubes" (an appetizer portion for ($19) came with inedible rice, a few shreds of roasted pepper out of a jar and broccoli. Broccoli? Yep, this is one hell of an authentic Lebanese restaurant, that's for sure. Meanwhile, as the evening ground on, the sickeningly sweet smell of the hookahs was making everyone gag. To add to the discomfort, loud music was blaring all the time. So, end of meal. After crappy food, indifferent service and no water, they have the unmitigated gall to slap on a 20% service charge, unannounced, for a party of three! The manager removed it, but only after making a huge fuss, saying what a wonderful restaurant it is and how every restaurant charges for service. Hello? What planet is this jerk from? It's not only not customary to impose service charges when they are not plainly stated in the menu (which these aren't), doing so is *illegal*. This smelly, rude, stomach-turning dump is great if you like to smoke hookahs, don't mind being ripped off for that (see other reviews), and aren't eating much. Advice: If you've been to this dump with fewer than eight people and they added a service charge to your bill, file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs. Service charges for fewer than eight people are illegal in New York City. P.S. I see from a later review that they haven't got the hint yet. DCA told me they were warned that tacking on service charges is illegal for small parties. This place was extremely rude from the gate. Literally, we didn't even make it inside because they were being absolutely rude at the door. The bouncer checked our ID's and asked if we were waiting for someone so we said yeah our 3 friends are parking their car but we'll wait for them inside. Big mistake! I've been coming to Melody for over 7 years and I have watched the service go from good to absolutely terrible. The hookah and music are good and will keep you wanting to come back to frequent this venue. However the owner's behavior is concerning to me. Over the years I have been able to analyze how disgusting and atrocious his behavior has gotten. Recently I went to Melody with a few friends and the owner knew one of the gentleman I was with and he went above and beyond with the service. It was a lovely experience, we had 3 bottles for 4 people and a really smooth peach hookah. I had such a great time that 2 days later I decided to go back to Melody with my boyfriend and 2 friends that had never been to Melodys before. We ordered a bottle of wine, 2 Long Island ice teas, and a blue mist hookah. The Long Island ice teas were disgusting and were made incorrectly. As soon as our bottle of wine was finished the owner told our waiter in front of everyone at our table that if we weren't ordering any more drinks that it was time for us to pay our bill and leave since it was becoming busier and they needed the table. I was shocked, appalled, and embarrassed considering I raved about this place to my 2 friends that I brought that had never been there before. The owner's behavior is disgusting. Terrible service. I went there with my husband and another couple at 10pm for hookah and drinks. By 11pm, the owner came to our table and said we needed to pay a cover charge of 20 dollars EACH because of the live entertainment that was coming on, A bellydancer and a keyboard player. We told him we GOT THERE a lil while ago and COVERS should be given at the door, NOT when your sitting and enjoying hookah!! It is embarrassing to shell out 80 bucks for a cover charge in an establishment when ur already eating, drinking and smoking hookah!! His response: get out. The hookahs at Melody are good and it's nice to see a hookah bar that serves alcohol however the service isn't very good. There are some lounge seats along the walls but the majority of the seating is almost like a restaurant and I don't believe they serve food. Alll my friends say the owner is a douchebag and he's well known for his douchebaggery among those who frequent the hookah bars on steinway. What's the best day to come to Melody? Thursdays, hands down! Avoid this place on weekends and come here during the week if you want to smoke some good quality and cheap hookah while enjoying a drink or two. This spot is right in the middle of all the hookah bars located on Steinway. If you're driving there make sure to give yourself enough time to find a parking spot as they can be very limited at night. The music tends to be anywhere from freestyle to hip-hop and r&b to Latin. I'm a bartender and have worked various lounges so I get what the staff have to go through but good God, this place sucks. Went here with three of my girl friends on a Friday night around 11 pm and as we approached the establishment there were FIVE bouncers at the door. Why that many? I have no idea. Like many other reviewers stated - the bouncers are rude and downright annoying. One of my friends stands at 5", so one of the bouncers asked her to make a pose. I could tell she was humiliated and when she refused, he persisted and got upset when she didn't and even told her at one point he wouldn't let her in. Another bouncer asked me to smile before I was allowed in as well. Like I said, annoying. We finally were let in and seated at a table with the lounge couches as opposed to the seats. We ended up buying a bottle, hookah and the appetizer sampler and the bill came up to 300+ which included gratuity. We tried to split the bill between the four of us but was told they didn't do that. Later on, the server said we could split the bill into two then three. Which one is it? I get that splitting bills and using multiple cards is annoying but if you're going to get an 18% (50+) gratuity just for bringing my bottle, juice and some cups the least you could do is that. Mind you, it wasn't busy at 11 pm, maybe 6 table tops. We finished the bottle around 2 pm, 3 hours into being there and the server had come by and asked us to move since we weren't drinking anything anymore and is trying to flip the table. I understand but when I asked where would we be moving to, he pointed towards a table for 2 (we were 4) that was already occupied by other people. ????. I ended up blowing him off but did buy another round of drinks, went up to the bar myself and ordered a whiskey sour and 2 Hennessy and red bulls. The bill came up to $53 including a $8 tip for the bartender. I'm a bartender so I know what's going into my drink. She poured a house liquor, bottom shelf whiskey. Then proceeded to use an energy drink from the gun which is just a bootleg of every quality drink out there (coke isn't from Coca Cola, it's something else. You get the idea) If I'm paying almost $15 per drink, I expect top shelf liquor and Red Bull from a can. However, the dj played a lot of good music. Bus boys were on point with messes, spills and picking up unwanted plates or cups. Hookah boys came by regularly to change the coal. Even though my server kind of annoyed me in the beginning, he would check on me and would strike conversations with me throughout the night and the place seemed pretty organized. If you are a cafe/lounge/club outside of Manhattan, your should not charge more than $8 per drink period. The hookah was cheap, but the drinks were way too expensive. The ambiance was nice, but the music was the same through out the whole night. I did like the live singer they had, but wanted to hear some hip-hop, top 40s along with Lebanese/ Middle Eastern music. The crowd was okay, some people were dancing and trying to enjoy themselves, but most people were just sitting and smoking hookah and looked dazed and confused.
