The bartender, Boone was very unwelcoming. He was downright rude to my friends. He yelled loudly, "YO, it's not like I'm just standing here," when my friends had arrived and were getting settled in. He referred to guests as "d***heads" to me when I was closing out, saying, "Do you see what I have to put up with these d***heads?" I work in the service Industry, and this is NOT how you treat guests. My friend was apprehensive to even order from the bartender because of how rude he was being tonight. I wish I had a better experience here as I am walking distance away, but I guess I'll go somewhere else. It was unpleasant to order from the bartender. One of the worst bar service I have experienced in Nashville. I don't care how divey you are, this isn't the way to treat guests. Its a small place with a lot of character and charm. Been around awhile from what the two older gentleman playing pool next to us said. Has 2 ping pong tables some dart boards a shuffleboard table and I think 5 pool tables. Rent by the hour not bad prices. Bartenders were friendly and served us quickly every time we came up to the bar even though they were busy. Will be back for sure. It's a pool hall. And a dive. We wandered down here on a Saturday night from the Sutler and it was pretty quiet. We were dressed up for dinner at Sinema and stuck out like a sore thumb. We came back after dinner and it was PACKED. The wait to get a pool table wasn't even worth putting our name in for. This place is really three different places in the same space with Melrose Billiard Parlor, The Sutler Saloon and Rambler Cocktail Bar. My experience here was mainly all down in the basement bar which is Melrose Billiard Parlor and it was packed during my visit while The Sutler Saloon and Rambler Cocktail Bar didn't seem to have much going on at the time I visited.  I found it interesting they had "No Smoking" signs in here while lots of people were smoking and the smoke was hanging very thick in the basement so I couldn't stay very long as the smoke was really getting to me as a non-smoker.  This looks like it could be a cool and fun spot but if they are going to allow smoking they really have to get better ventilation in here as it was far too smoky for me in the Melrose Billiard Parlor while upstairs there didn't seem to be any smoking.  The Melrose Billiard Parlor definitely seemed to draw a much better crowd later at night and seemed to stay open later than the spaces upstairs which would have been great if it wasn't so smoky in the basement. Overall it seems like a cool spot but with so much smoke hanging around I just can't handle that. read more

Bacon cheeseburger and fries were terrific; generous on the bacon with a good grilled flavor, and small potato skin fries. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed. The pool tables are rented out by the hour and where in really good condition. This could easily turn into one of my favorite places to play pool in town. It's about as unassuming as you can get as it is housed in the basement of the old bowling alley on 8th avenue. The parking lot is large, unmarked and usually empty. I've driven by here a million times never noticing there was actually a business still open. The only signs that identify you've arrived are the neon lights around one door with the name of the place printed in small letters which are unreadable until you get right up on it. It's a pretty spacious place, much larger than Rack Room but not quite as big as Buffalo Billiards. The bar is pretty impressive and although their draft selection is small they have Yazoo Dos Perros on tap. It is more of a liquor drinking place anyways, with a great happy hour until seven and a bartender that serves up some stout cocktails. There's a small seating area with booths and tables and quite a few flat screen tvs around the bar where a surprising number of people were there just to hang out. There are quite a few pool tables to choose from but they've definitely seen better days. Each table either has a tear or a stain of some sort on it but they're still playable albeit pretty rough looking. One thing that's really cool about this place is they have ping pong tables and free shuffleboard in case you get tired of playing pool or want to switch things up a bit. They also have a snooker table of which I have know nothing about as I've never seen one before, but it looks pretty fun. The crowd that comes here is great, very eclectic and friendly and the whole place overall has a very relaxed atmosphere. read more

I started playing PING PONG here a few years ago with a buddy and now we have a tournament every Tuesday night and we have recruited a ton of new business. Most of the time The staff is very helpful and friendly in loaning paddles out and getting drinks quickly and efficiently! It is a hole in the wall bar and very smoky ( which is the ONE thing that grosses me out). I have a female friend that would love to come if it wasn't a chimney, but other than that I love it snd have made some great friends! read more

I've been coming here on Thursday nights with my friends, and the bar itself is great. There are plenty of billiard tables that are usually pretty easy to get on. The beer selection is not too shabby either. However, do not even get me started on the service. They are the absolute worst bartenders I have ever had. It's two of them: the girl with the dragon tattoo, and Steve-O from jackass (I want to pile drive my fist into this guys face). These 2 clowns are the definition of assholes. If you ask for a drink you might get stabbed when they hand it to you. I was trying to be friendly to dragon tattoo girl, and asked about her elaborate shoulder tattoo. Her response, "you don't fucking know me"! Might I add she was basically not wearing a shirt so the whole world could see this tat. The guy on the other hand has his hat glued to the side of his face like a wanna be vanilla ice. I asked him if he would change it to the Memphis Grizzlies game last week, and he he acted like I was Osama Bin Laden. Overall this place is ass cheeks because of these 2, which is a damn shame. read more

I was excited on the reopening of Melrose Billiards because it sounded like a place I could see myself often. I never went to it before they did the renovation. We walk in and it's super cute. It seems pretty divey, dark, and just has a cool vibe. It was on a Thursday around 8pm so there weren't too many people in there. My boyfriend and I went to the only vacant pool table and walked around it looking for the quarter slots, but didn't see any. There were already balls in the pockets so we assumed the games were free. I went up to the bar to get a couple beers. There was a guy there before me so I sat while I waited for the bartender to finish his order. Five minutes go by and the bartender didn't look up at me while I sit there with my debit card in my hand. I finally just spoke up and asked for 2 PBRs, hoping I didn't come off as rude or impatient. Fortunately he heard me because he brought them over even though he didn't act like he heard me say my order. We overheard the table next to us talking about the prices of the tables per hour - $9. Great, my boyfriend went up to the bar to pay. He was up there for 10 minutes and was never waited on or looked at so he walked away. There were 4 people behind the bar and 5 customers at the bar total. Just weird they didn't acknowledge him either. It was literally like he was an invisible guy holding up a 10 dollar bill. Anyway, my boyfriend and I enjoyed a couple games and a couple walks up and asks us to play doubles for shots. We had to go to work the next say so we said we'd do doubles but not the shots. The guy called my boyfriend a bitch????? Then we told them we weren't interested. I haven't heard someone talk like that to a stranger since I went to bars in college. (I know this has nothing to do with Melrose Billiards itself) This place is trying to be divy and hip but overall it's just a little over priced and the bartenders seem to hate their job. Horrible experience, if you are not white don't walk in. Had to move around 3-4 different times just to get the bartenders attention. The white girl, with the spider web tattoo on her inner lobe, she's tatted up head to toe. She got my friend a coke, then I asked her for one, she was not happy. Rolled her eyes and when she came back she threw the coke, no ice and less than half a cup of coke. She was taking shots with the customers and shrugging her shoulders as in why not. This is the benchmark for dive bars (a close tie with the Upside Down Plaza in Birmingham, AL). Regulars over the age of 60? Check. Beer so cheap you'll think it's 1950? Check. Pool tables (snooker and ping pong variety as well)? Check. In the basement of an abandoned bowling alley with absolutely no signage whatsoever? Check. Here's what you may not like that I'm indifferent to: hipsters after 9 pm, enough smoke to think you're in a coffin with the Marlboro Man, and a delightful smell that I adoringly call "New Orleans Summer Breeze". In fact this place reminds me of New Orleans quite a bit. There's an oddity in this state that requires all bars to serve food. This place meets that requirement at the bare minimum. Ah...old Melrose. So dirty, so underground (literally). Melrose Billiards is one of the cheaper places in Nashville to go for pool, ping pong and shuffleboard. I don't recommend drinking anything but beer; I'm a bartender, and their well is full of stuff even I've never heard of. Also, Jason K.'s recommendation to pay for each drink, when received, in cash, is a good one. The bartenders tend to ignore the non-regulars, and Andrew Jackson has a way of interrupting the flow of conversation in your favor. It's a smoking establishment, so those militant anti's among you should probably stay away. Dirty, divey, and all kinds of other 'y's, the old Melrose is a good place to go shoot some cheap pool, play a few rounds of ping pong or pretend you know how to play shuffleboard. read more

The Melrose Billiard Parlor is a great spot to check out if you are in the area. It's a dive bar but with an updated feel. There are some cool touches throughout the bar that set the divey mood. MBP is connected to The Sutler so you can easily go up the stairs to hear some live music then head back down to play some games. The games are your typical bar games: billiards, ping pong, darts, shuffle board, and foosball. On a busy night the games fill up quick but I believe there is a waiting list at the bar. At least there is for pool. Pool is $9/hour. I'm not sure about ping pong but darts are free. They have the old school boards so be ready to keep your own score. It's always good to brush up on the old math skills. Maybe a bit of a challenge when throwing back a few but it just adds to the fun! The beer selection is pretty good with a nice variety on tap. Prices aren't that cheap for it being a dive bar. I believe my IPA ran me $6 which isn't bad, but is cheaper upstairs at The Sutler. It also is served in a plastic cup. I might be a beer snob but drinking beer out of plastic just isn't as good. I understand that this is probably because it is a game bar. I can imagine how many glasses would shatter falling off the pool tables or getting hit during an intense game of ping pong. The booths are comfortable and old school. There is also bar seating with some TVs. The bathroom scares me a little bit but I'm sure it's fine. I always go to the main bathrooms in the hallway. They are much nicer. Smoking is allowed after 10 pm but I was surprised how not smokey it was before that. Sometimes the smell lingers and soaks into the bar, but I didn't even realize smoking was ever allowed. They also have some food but I have not tried that. I think it's your typical bar food but the pictures look pretty yummy. Service isn't overly friendly but also not not friendly. Overall, it's a cool place to check out. The building actually has three bars in it so you can make a whole night out of one place! read more

Until I searched for it on Yelp, I didn't think this place even had an official name. I've heard the natives call it the "Golden Rail", or more commonly, "the pool hall on 8th". It's a dirty, smokey as hell, divey place with a sea of pool tables, at least one Snooker table, two ping pong tables, shuffleboard, and some stand-alone video games. The carpet is ripped some places, non existent in others, and the restroom is disgusting. We end up here about once a year when friends come into town for the holidays. It takes them back to their high school days; talking smack while playing pool. A jukebox serves as a source of tunes if you're willing to feed money to it. A few TV's are mounted above the bar, usually tuned to a sports channel. No waiter service - go to the bar for your beverage needs. Expect a wait for a drink; no one is in a hurry. On this last visit, I didn't want alcohol and ordered a ginger ale. It cost $2.00! For a place like this, that's an absurd price to pay. I'll have water next time. Depending on your expectations, and definitely hinging on your tolerance to smoke, you may find this place enjoyable based on nostalgia alone as it is an important part of Nashville's dive history. read more

I really dig the vibe and atmosphere here, but Melrose could never be five stars in my book until they become non-smoking. I don't think a place like this would ever change that rule, so four stars it is! Some friends and I came here last night to play a few games of pool before ending the night. Had I known there was a freaking PING PONG table in the back, I probably would have been there well past midnight. Something to look forward to on my next visit, right? I always wondered about this place - "Hey, what's that unidentified, seemingly closed and/or shady white building across the street?' - so I'm glad we went here after finding out Melrose Pub on the other side of Franklin no longer had their pool table in the back. read more

I came here as a pit stop to kill time between dinner and meeting friends elsewhere. Had I not been the DD for the night, I think I'd have enjoyed my time a little more, but it was still great for people watching. My first thought upon entering the bar was that it was incredibly smokey, but I guess that's to be expected for drive bars in Nashville. (I just moved down from Illinois, where it is illegal to smoke inside bars/restaurants.) Like I said, I wasn't drinking because I had to drive, but my comrades all downed their drinks. Under $5 for a well drink?! Sounds great to me. I was also impressed with the amount of pool tables. If you don't want to put your name in line to wait for a table, this is the place to go. Normally around 7 pm there were so many familiar faces and always a friend to speak to, but this particular Thursday evening, there were crickets. Only two guys playing pool in the back. The décor looked like someone was trying to dress up an ugly prom date. Too many cutesy items on the walls trying to convince you it's a Nashville institution, which we all know died when the Chandlers were run out on a rail after 47 years. The best kept secret for a great burger in Nashville. We came on "cheapass Wednesday" when beers were all half off. Great service and our bartender told us about the double cheeseburger. I wish I could give 1/2 star, but I can't. The reviews made this place seem reasonable. I'll start with my overall impression and follow up with reasons. I can't possibly recommend this place with a straight face. I was literally on my way down the steps into the place with my girlfriend when the smell of smoke was so overwhelming that we decided not to go all the way down. I decided to go alone at a later date and when I went all the way down, my very first thought was, "Thank goodness I didn't bring my girlfriend here!". I would hate for this to be her first impression of a pool room. This is the epitome of a smoky, seedy poolroom. This is the impression most people have and is not one that I would want to carry on. The good - There was ample room to play and most of the tables were level and had a decent roll and I didn't find any dead rails. There was even a snooker table (a rare find). It was dirt cheap to play (I payed $2.50 for almost 2 hours of table time!), but there is a reason it's so inexpensive. The bad - the smell of smoke is completely overwhelming. The equipment is kept in terrible condition. The cloth is stained and torn, pockets are falling apart, racks are falling apart. There are tables which makes it appear they sell food, but the place is so dirty I would not eat anything there. read more

being basically subterranean, in the basement of an old and empty movie and retail space, the nashville flood of 2010 hit the melrose hard. i am told that the water pretty much filled the room, with all of its pool tables and funky years of goodness. for regulars at the melrose, the thought of it all being gone was almost unbearable. but no, they rallied and decided to make it new and reopen, and with the help of many volunteers, that is exactly what they did. and the most amazing part is that they were able to save just about everything, including old signs and decorations. they even painted the walls the same color as before... so now, you descend the stairs to find it all just as you remembered... only the carpet is new and the walls are clean, and that is a very good thing. a toast to all of the great souls of nashville who worked to make sure that such a legendary bar re-emerged from the flood, even better than before. read more

Super cool place for billiards and ping pong! No shortage of pool tables. Extremely cheap beer.... eclectic crowd....however, this place is a smoker's paradise....an oasis for the heavenly smoker. Therefore, I can't deal. I'm not a smoker and it hits you like a brick wall once you enter the stairway. I'm sure if they wanted to do something about the smoke, they would. Which leads me to believe that they are not concerned about trying to appease nonsmokers. I get it and I'm not mad either. Great place to hang out, but unfortunately I won't be there.
