I was in the area with a friend perusing the nearby shops after lunch at nearby Taylor Shellfish. She wanted to show me this little marketplace and my gosh, can this place be any cuter? It's a hip little indoor market at Capitol Hill with a few restaurants and a handful of retail shops. Although we mainly window shopped and just browsed around, I couldn't help but fall in love with all the lovely aesthetics. There were meats, cheeses, wine, cute little household goods, art pieces, oh my! I also noticed a few familiar names like Sitka and Spruce, a popular restaurant that I stumbled upon while researching 'must eat' spots in Seattle. I wish we had more time to look around. We didn't get to go upstairs, but I'll just have to plan for that on my next visit to Seattle. It's just down the street from the Starbucks Reserve and an easy add-on to any itinerary. Melrose Market is a cool, indoor market, with small retail shops, specialty food stalls and restaurants. Located on Capitol Hill, I'll swing by when in the area, as there's something new to check out. Although some beloved eateries are no longer there, you can still find some of the most popular restaurants in town here, like Sitka and Spruce, Taylor Shellfish, etc. I personally love seeing the small retail stalls here, selling craft goods from local artists that you can't find anywhere else. The market isn't very large, so is easy to walk through in less than an hour, if you aren't dining in at any of the restaurants. It's also walking distance from downtown, as it's on the south end of Capitol hill. I always enjoy visiting, to see what new vendors are here. read more

Ya, well I am not the only Person! There are a couple of other posts similar to mine. I walked here with my 7 year old just to see what a great market it was. This market might be great for the immediate locals, but in the grand scheme of things it is not much at all. It is a very tiny block of super expensive stores. The meat market looked cool, but very pricy. If you are from Southern California or Orange County, imagine the Anti Mall in Costa Mesa. Now, imagine it about a quarter of the size. Meh. Not as large as I expected, but still a charming neighborhood market in Capital Hill worth making a visit to. Melrose houses about a handful of small business fronts inside including a restaurant, a butcher counter with some great organic cuts and house made sausages, a plentiful flower shop, wine bar, and a expansive cheese vendor - all focusing on maintaining very high standards, promoting local products (or as local as can be; everything from PNW), specialty items, artisanal and seasonal. All of the vendors are VERY knowledgeable about their products, welcome questions, and are happy to provide samples if available. The perfect casual early afternoon ~hour visit to Melrose Market (from a tourist perspective): As soon as you enter walk to the left and ogle the offerings at Rain Shadow Meats and wish you had a place like this near home (at least I do!; fresh rabbit can be difficult to find). Walk around and examine the menu at Sitka and Spruce - looked great, but my husband and I were not in desire of a full meal. Of course, stop and smell the lovely flowers! Then...u-turn it and head directly toward The Calf & Kid. What a great cheese selection - my personal nirvana. Devour some tastings, try your best to decide on which you like best (all of them, yes, please!), and purchase a few varieties, cut into any size you desire. Be sure to get a Goat Chevre Chocolate Truffle and pop in right in your mouth. Like Tony Bourdain said when he visited, "This shouldn't be good, but it is. Wow. That's my kind of desert." You bet your bum it is...and I don't even care for chocolate much. After you've made your cheese purchase, mosey over to bar ferd'nand, take a seat, and enjoy a glass of PNW wine hand chosen for you based on your conversation with the proprietor...then decide to stay for a second glass because of the wonderful and insightful conversation you're having with a few native Seattle folks. Overall: If I lived in Seattle (yes, that actually might happen someday), especially in the Capital Hill area, I would definitely be a regular customer at Melrose Market - not just to shop, but also just to hang out and enjoy a bit of serenity and awesome local goods. There are multiple shops/ boutiques and eateries located inside this marketplace. They also house the bathrooms for some of the nearby businesses. Aside from that, I can see it as the perfect spot to kill time at while waiting for a seat at one of the multiple restaurants located nearby. There are places that serve wine, healthy sandwiches, fresh cuts of meats, and more. Some even have fresh flowers and herbs. A perfect place to browse and window shop too with no pressure to buy. Melrose Market is amazing! My roommate took me here to show me the place because he thought I would enjoy it and I sure did! They have a bunch of different areas in this market. A restaurant, wine bar, flower shop, meats, cheeses and more! It's an awesome place to check out. We came in early on a Sunday, but I would love to see this place during a more crowded time, I think it would be a lot of fun! We went upstairs to the store there and looked around. They had a lot of cool stuff that I wanted to buy such as a light up sign you could put letters on, old school Edison light bulbs, art supplies and more. I can dig it. We were visiting Seattle and had a bit of time to kill before our dinner reservation. The neighborhood itself is pretty cool, with plenty of shops and world class views. We promptly parked in the inexpensive parking deck across the street and made our way into the market. It was late afternoon on a weekday so about half of the shops were closed but we were able to get a lovely selection of meats along with some bread and drinks. We found a table and enjoyed our snack as we people watched inside the market and out. It's not entirely open air but you could still catch the occasional breeze from the large, open doors. All in all, a nice spot to sit back and catch your breath for a while. read more

Its pretty much movie set ready: an essential stop on any Seattle food tour. If you love marketplaces, can't get enough of exposed brick, place local organic food on a pedestal. or even if you just want to sip a glass of wine with your kiddo in a cozy, swank, urban setting, then Melrose Market has you covered. From Sunday brunch at Terra Platta or Sitka and Spruce, to any day lunch at Homegrown, to happy hour at Bar Ferdinand with a cheese pairing from Calf and the Kid, to fresh oyster at Taylors, to a precious flower stand, to the little urban housewares shopping excursion (upstairs), to a blood sausage run at Rain Shadow Meat, the options here are exciting. Don't get me wrong, this place is tiny. Its hard to believe that a little triangular building with less than a dozen businesses contained within it, could pack such a culinary wallop. This place lacks the scope of a Ferry Building, the nostalgia of Pike Market or the scale of Granville Island, but it is Seattle's little foodie gem, all the same. Did you know: in addition to shopping, you could also get married here? Okay, so to be honest, I haven't checked out the actual market itself. Instead, I had a chance to see this place in the form of a wedding venue. My 5 stars and review are entirely focused on Melrose Market as a wedding venue as opposed to the actual market itself, although I'm happy to read rave reviews about the market-side of it. One of my fraternity brothers got married here, and I have to say, if/when my wedding day comes (trust me I'm a long way away from it), this might have to be considered! I really appreciate it as a venue; it's so low-key, relaxed, and Seattle-y; which is how I consider myself. The space used for the wedding and it's entrance is actually in the back, on Minor St as opposed to Market St. So it's sort of hidden, adding to its low-keyness. It's actually adjacent to Still Liquor so you can use that as a pre-game place, which is what the newlyweds did, or your friends can go to any of the nearby pubs/bars before or afterwards. When you walk in, you go down a short flight of stairs that leads to the venue space. There is a wide open space that they first used for the wedding ceremony, and then when the guests went to Still Liquor for an intermission before the reception, they transformed the space in to a dining hall. The space reminds me of an empty loft, with brick walls, support beams, and open space you can transform to however you want your venue to look like. Big shoutout the staff too who were all nice, friendly, and great with a bunch of fraternity and sorority alums. read more

After watching the Layover - Seattle, and Bourdain stating that this is 'a must' place to visit, this was a stop on our weekend and we will be returning. A very charming market right in the heart of the city, we found parking on the street and decided to go right on in. Your welcomed to a nice, homey feeling wooden structure. Natural lighting coming in from the windows into the market warms you while you walk in. The words 'fresh' and 'comfortable' come to mind once you step in here. Once we walked in, me and my partner gazed upon Rain Shadow Meats, at all the fresh cuts of pork and beef, everything from Foie Gras of Pork, to the freshest ground beef we have ever seen. We then headed to our destination: The Calf and the Kid, a very nice selection of the finest local cheeses, whether your buying to bag home, or to eat here they got you covered. Eating cheese here, nothing to drink, what to do... they got you covered, like in Bar Ferd'nand, where we eventually went. The cheese came over and we were pairing it with a red and a white with a very knowledgable person pouring our drinks. Whether your people watching, shopping for wines, or just drinking right there, another feature of this market. Tucked in the back is Sitka & Spruce for your sit down 'restaurant' type needs. With a beautiful open kitchen concept (you have to see it to believe it) my partner was just drooling at the layout of this place and maybe next time we will come here to eat. Upstairs, we walked to a cute home decorations type store, from cute clothes with meat part imprints, to quirky greeting cards, to spice dice (where if you can't think of what to cook, count on the dice to make something different, all you gotta do is roll) it was neat. Also count on Yelp to have someone post the restroom code (1235) but anyone in the market will tell you this. I will definitely come back, and what I wrote above is what I witnessed, I know I am probably missing many things from this market, but it is a gem, and talking with the woman from Calf and the Kid, ever since that Bourdain episdoe of the Layover aired sales have been up, one can only imagine this place during primetime hours? But, when I arrived around noon, lunchtime, on a Monday all but one restaurant and the boutique were closed. The food at the sandwich spot was excellent and great quality but I was really disappointed that nothing else was really open at what seemed like a totally normal time to me! I love this little area! I frequent homegrown, and the little butcher shop on a weekly basis! All the restaurants and eateries on that little corner are absolutely perfect! It's the only place I have found that sells duck fat (for chocolate chip cookies of course ) and their guanciale is to die for! All the shoppes are really lovely and informed about gluten free/celiac and other allergies. read more

As we all know, Melrose Market is the lovely building housing a variety of phenomenal local shops, bars and restaurants....On one triangular section of Capitol Hill, you can peruse new music, buy a handcrafted wheel of local cheese, pick up a red vegan purse with birds and stitches, sip a glass of red, pick up a sunflower or two, have a cocktail or dinner or lunch or breakfast, or walk home with a locally raised, grass-fed steak. Among other things.... In short, Melrose Market is the new Seattle mecca for those who care about all things local and sustainable, whether you want something to wear, to drink, to grill, or to grow. I believe it may be possible to have breakfast at Homegrown, go linger in Velouria or Sonic Boom, eat lunch in Sitka and Spruce, window-shop the case at Calf & Kid or the green growing lovelies at Marigold & Mint, have a beer at Still Liquor, and then stop in to Bar Ferd'nand for a glass of wine before picking up some local free-range chicken from Mad Hatcher Farms over at Rain Shadow Meats for dinner. Love this place. We need more of these types of markets in Seattle. Melrose market is located at a busy area in the in between of First Hill and Capitol Hill. The front facade and entrance makes it seem like any other store front, but there is much more to see inside. It reminds me somewhat of a much more smaller scale version of the Borough Market in London which is another reason why I love this place. These assemblies of different businesses housed under one roof makes for a fun and enjoyable shopping and dining experience. Highly recommend this market to anyone. read more

I do love Melrose Market... if only it offered a few more affordable options. We left Taylor's Shellfish.... kinda hungry. Maybe I'm just in an expensivo neighborhood? But we thought we'd head over and get a biscuit and a coffee to temper our hunger levels down. We both got coffees, half sandwiches and one soup to share. That HALF sandwich portion was HUGE. and DELICIOUS. I had the ultimate grilled cheese. It tasted so artisanal... it was nearly a turn off! When grilled cheese gets too fancy pants... it no longer is grilled cheese, but becomes some ridiculous 'trop de fantaisie sandwich au fromage grillé' I was trop de fantaisie because the insanely fresh tomatoes paired with that fancy pants cheese all packed in with farm fresh buttery artisanal expensivo bread... i'm clearly in the wrong tax bracket here, right????? Either way, I love this market. It so pretty and cute! We spent over half an hour munching on those fancy pants sandwiches while watching all kinds of families walking in with beautiful dogs (the dogs were also wearing fancy pants clothes), and those resplendent dogs playing with cheerful babies (who were trapped in froufrou strollers) golly... i need to earn more money if I'm to come back here.... read more

The long: After having lunch a few doors down I was sent here to use the facilities since it was a shared building and walked in to a nice surprise. The first thing you walk into is a little artisan butcher counter and as you look around there are also neat little shops in here. There is a nice and small cheese shop, a soap store, and a restaurant in the back which looked busy and the menu looked quite good. Sure some people are complaining about prices being high, but this isn't Walmart you are in. These products are specialized items and some are super unique so you are getting what you pay for. The space itself was gorgeous and the shops/stores inside are worthy of checking out, but it's no San Pedro Square (in San Jose, CA) or Chelsea Market (in NY). 4-5 shops tops. With two restaurants, a specialty wine shop, specialty cheese shop, an amazing butcher Rain Mountain meats, and handcrafted goods upstairs. The shops are a locally owned and friendly and will offer suggestions to help you get a party together at one of the restaurants or you can rent up the out of the upstairs for a small private gathering. street parking is fairly easy and bicycle parking is ample. there's a flower shop to pick up the last minute thank you gift for that special person this is taking a date for the first time to dinner at Sitka and spruce. Melrose Market is the one-stop shop in Capitol Hill for artisan cheese, wine, organic flowers, lunch, meats, music and retail therapy, with a focus on all things local and sustainable. Rather than writing a review for all of the businesses inside the Melrose Market, I will simply write one general review of the Melrose Market as a whole. My first visit here was in September for a client meeting followed by lunch then errands to pick up flowers for my friend Jenny's birthday dinner party. Marigold & Mint is a delightful and charming neighborhood flower shop located inside the market. I could spend hours at this boutique just looking at flowers and envisioning the possible floral arrangements throughout my home, and browsing at the vintage items, gifts and chocolates. Of course, I can never leave this flower shop empty handed and always find something lovely and living to bring back and brighten up my home. There has been some good national press on the Melrose Market, attracting diverse audiences, both locals and tourists alike. I feel very lucky to have this in my own city and close to my neighborhood where it is conveniently located and inviting for lunch, a drink, happy hour and shopping. Personally it's my one-stop shop before a dinner party or hosting a party at home where I can pick up specialty foods and gifts. This place is amazing--so many great food stops and shops, all under one roof. What a find! We stopped by to get some salami from Rain City Meats, ended up having two drinks for 'apertivo hour' (drinks are $4, apertivo free) at Still Liquor and gawked at how gorgeous Sitka & Spruce is--I found myself saying, "that is the type of place you would see on Anthony Bourdain's show" and then, we were reading City Arts magazine later that night, and voila! It said Anthony Bourdain had visited there this month! So, get there while you can before it becomes an even more well-known spot--great food, great people, great service--loved this place. What an adorable hot spot on Cap Hill! I loved this collection of businesses working together inside one space. There's a butcher, a cafe or two, a wine shop, and 2 boutiques! All in one corner market! The smells are great, the treats are yummy, and the gifts are unique! The only downside I'd note, as is the case a lot in Cap Hill, is the prices. Especially in the little home goods boutique on the 2nd floor... I could afford exactly NONE of it! But such cute stuff! BONUS: The little flower/gift shop in the back is called "marigold and mint" -- it has the most delicious smelling flowers and the sweetest lady running the shop. This place is absolutely adorable! You can tell when you walk in that it's very clean, well thought out, and beautiful. I think its more appealing to women though, because there's a cute boutique upstairs that reminds me of Etsy. There is a restaurant downstairs that was made to look like a kitchen. There is a flower shop with an amazing set up. For the guys, there is a meat stand as well as a cheese stand that people seem to enjoy. I really enjoyed the set up of this place, and I love supporting small businesses so I'm by default a fan. However, although beautiful, it was quite small and quite. I love wandering around it this fabulous space that lets it light even on the dreariest Seattle Days. I consider the whole corner to be the Melrose Market, so I've got to give a shot out to the fabulous, all though sometimes slow, Terra Plata. This market has got it going on. Trust me on that.
