The food was really good, and surprisingly the fried shrimp may be the best I've ever had. My wife, connoisseur of fried shrimp, agrees! The burger was also very good, the portions are good without being overwhelming, and even the chicken fried steak was delicious too. They even have some healthy choices, but we'll have to stop by again to try one of those. read more

Wow, Wow, Wow, i totally loved everything about this diner..! The food was excellent and exactly what you can expect from a small town USA diner!! Everything definitely made from scratch and you'll taste that home and made with love in every bite.! Mel's Diner doesn't serve anything frozen other than their ice cream and milk shakes which now I regret not taking one to go.! The service was beyond superior.! I loved everything about Mel's Diner in Small town USA, Mingus TX...! I only wished Midland had a diner like Mel's.. I'll definitely stop by to eat again when I'm around that area..! ABSOLUTELY..! Off the highway by 2 miles but well worth the detour. Large interior with tables, booths, and bar. Saw a couple of additional small rooms that would be perfect for meetings. Everyone we met was super friendly. Mel even came and visited with us. Not the big burley diner "Mel" I had envisioned, but a smiling, gregarious, blond haired woman! We really enjoyed visiting with her. I had their fried shrimp which was hands down the BEST fried shrimp I have had since moving to the DFW Metroplex area. The dish I had was drizzled with an Old Bay Seasoning and honey mixture. It was delicious. My husband had the chicken fried steak and is always looking for the best. He rated this one in his top 3 which means it was really good. Along with the entrees the sides, fresh cut french fries, lobster macaroni salad, jalapeño poppers, and cold slaw, were all delicious. If you are ANYWHERE close to Mingus, Texas (Stephenville, Abilene, Weatherford or Granbury) do yourself a favor and drive past the smokehouse restaurant and go to Mel's diner just down the street. It is amazing! Super fun, clean restaurant. They even played reruns of the Mel's Diner tv show. Husband had the seafood platter and I had the catfish/shrimp plate. All of it was amazing including the hand cut fries. The shrimp was so big I had to cut it with a knife. The catfish was the thickest I have ever seen. All of it was hand batter and as Mel herself said "cooked with real butter"!! Met Mel and her daughter, who waited on us. So nice! Are you up for a short drive off the interstate to have the experience of your life? We made the trek to Mel's Diner in Mingus, Texas (816 S Mingus Blvd, Mingus, TX 76463) to give them a try. 100 mile round trip worth every mile. (From Hudson Oaks). Not Oarker County but they are our small town neighbors. I saw the homemade Maryland Crabcakes and my mouth immediately began to water. I traveled the East Coast and nobody did crab cakes better than Maryland. Just my luck ... they were out. They did have enough to whip up 3 small crab cake balls so I settled for those and a Greek salad. My only disappointment was the quantity. Never enough crab cake. My wife ordered the fried catfish, shrimp, okra, and fries. She had a tummy full of oil but she was happy. Let me tell you... best batter on the catfish I have tried in a long time. The owner is from Maryland and managed to find just the right mix of north and south batter. It was fantastic. My next trial is the Chesapeake Chicken. For our trip home we decided to splurge on calories (heck we had already eaten two days worth). My wife ordered the Reese's Peanut Butter milkshake. Folks it ain't what you think. No peanut butter cups blended in ice cream and milk here. Individual portions of chocolate and peanut butter carefully portioned and blended into the ice cream. My wife had to wrestle it away from me after letting me taste it. Trust me. It was that good! Now I couldn't let my wife show me up. I ordered a banana malt with just a tad bit of butterscotch blended in the mix. My favorite shake. We wallowed in our wonderful misery the whole 50 miles home. My wife is in blissful slumber as I write this. I'm wondering why I'm still awake. Don't miss out. They are only a few short minutes from the IH20. You will not regret the trek. Mel's Diner in Mingus, Texas is amazing. They have the best, freshest shrimp that I've ever had! I would put their shrimp up against any restaurants at the coast. Staff are so nice and so friendly. We took a pleasant drive west out of the metroplex and were treated to some of the best restaurant vittles we have had in a very long time. Stopped in at Mel's Diner for lunch today. I was surprised to see several seafood items on the menu. I couldn't decide which item I wanted to try, so I got the seafood platter, 3 Fried Jumbo Shrimp(delicious), 2 Catfish Fillets(scrumptious), and Fried Clams(excellent!). The fried okra tasted like it had been picked that morning and was breaded and cooked to perfection! I finished up with a Golden Banana malted milkshake that was so good it's sinful! The only problem I had was that the iced tree was brewed so fresh it kept melting my ice! However my very attentive waitress made sure that I got more ice every time I needed it! I will definitely be back often, especially whenever I am craving some good seafood! read more

Great little diner with an extensive menu! Who would have thought there would be a place like this in little ol' Mingus, Texas? We stopped in Thurber off I-20 to look at the old 1908 Smokestack and decided to NOT stop at the Smokestack Restaurant (Been there-Done that). Instead we drove two miles north...yes, ONLY TWO MILES NORTH, and found Mel's! The servers were really friendly and food was pretty darn good! I had a Philly Cheesesteak that was terrific and my wifey had the fried shrimp platter. Tip: Save room for a handspun milkshake...that alone is with the trip! read more

Had dinner tonight at Mel's Diner. It was my first time since they reopened after the fire. We were seated quickly a smiling young man brought our drinks promptly. Our waitress came by to introduce herself and get our appitizers going. We noticed that her arm was injured, she said an off leash pet had bitten her, but let me tell you that did not slow her down one bit. Our entrees arrived with a team getting everyone served together. The food was hot and tasty. I had the fried catfish. It was crispy and not over cooked. What a hidden gem! A buddy and I on a motorcycle ride decided to check this place out. Let me tell you Mel's Diner is AWESOME!!!! Bright and clean, inside and out, and the food is fantastic. The owner Melissa (Mel) came over and introduced herself. We had a wonderful conversation about how she came to Texas and started the restaurant. She is a wonderful person and a great addition to our state. We, along with many more riders, will be making this place one of our regular lunch stops for sure. read more

We had the Philly cheesesteak and my mom had the shrimp and chicken salad. The cheesesteak was really good. It had Great flavor and the bread stayed toasted and didn't get soggy, which is a huge texture thing to me. The shrimp and chicken salad was well displayed and my mom said one of the best she has eaten. I recommend the ranch platter for dipping fries that has 5 flavors of Ranch... Dill was my fave. They also have good burgers and about 53 flavors of milk shakes. The waitress and owner were super inviting and the Christmas decor was fun. We arrived at Mel's diner about 4 PM. The two of us were magnificently taken care of, but it's possible this was due to us being the only customers in the place at the time. The seafood was top notch and my wife's chicken dish was also fabulous. The owner and her daughter were very friendly, telling about the history of the diner, how it was first a bar, then a church, and finally a restaurant.
