It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! I felt bad and made sure to order the buffet for all of us and planned on eating what was already out and leaving quickly to respect their time, but not only did they immediately pop in multiple new items without being asked, but they let us know what they were doing, acted happy and excited to serve us, and noticed that I was cold and turned off the fans. To say that I was absolutely stunned by the customer service is an understatement. I cannot express enough gratitude and surprise by the welcoming atmosphere. Especially because we had family visiting from out of state. They couldn't believe the kindness they experienced. The food was extremely good, which is often a surprise at a buffet. China Cafe has a huge assortment of food that caters to anyone's tastebuds. They have amazing appetizers, entrees, and desserts. They have always been consistent and so caring for their customers. Even when you show up a couple minutes before they close, they are sure to cook up anything fresh if you are craving it. Tonight, they literally brought an entire new tray of banana pudding just for me. In high school, I always came every Friday with my friends for lunch; we always wanted to end our week on a high note and I can not imagine any other place better than China Cafe. Obviously, I can not rave about this place enough! It is so underrated, and as an Asian American myself, I am so impressed that China Cafe has not only survived but thrived with Asian Cuisine in a tiny Texas town regardless of the insistent and horrible discrimination and micro aggressions they face every day. When my second plate came, it had three biscuits cut in half way more gravy egg whites were great bacon was undercooked. And I sent it back to be cooked to crispy not burnt. When I cut into the biscuits, this time, half of them were edible. The others were still old and stale and uncuttable. The gravy was not your grandma's gravy like it used to be and the flavor didn't even resemble gravy. As for my beloved salad, he said that the ranch dressing was not their normal ranch dressing. It was watered down and sweet like they had used miracle whip. And they did not bring his breakfast burrito to go. The waitress completely forgot to place that order. I don't know what has happened to the Red Star, this used to be our favorite place to eat when we came to town. Wondering if ownership or management has changed? Because this is not the Red Star we know in love.
