Being of Danish Heritage, my…read moregrand-mother from my father's side had loads of antiques from the family homestead from the farm in Denmark. Several of the oil paintings were passed to me and they promptly ended up in a closet. Brown furniture and older Oil Paintings by unknown Danish Artists, are not the most popular these days. Ornate gold frames with nicks and broken bits are no longer the rage. They did hold some great memories from my childhood in London and remembering my Grand Ma and Step Grand pa, a prolific cigar smoker. What to do? Meanwhile the paintings sat in boxes for many years. I did some research with a few Danish art galleries in Copenhagen, trying to find value and realized that if I wanted to monetize them, they would have to be shipped and sold in Scandinavia. Luckily or not, the cost of shipping and putting them in a gallery there, wasn't really going to materialize to any significant money. It may even result in a push at best or even not realize the cost of getting them shipped and sold. What to do.. do I give them to another sibling? Are they even worth hanging on to? Suzie and I dragged them out of storage and checked them out and grabbed two of them which we actually liked a little bit. They were dark and the frames were wonky. They were after all over 100 plus years old. More research found Art Restorations not to far from us and we made an appointment to drop by and get an estimate. Let's see if these guys are worth cleaning. Emily met us on time and we met Ram the artist and head restorer. We discussed what we were looking to accomplish and was given a quote for both the paintings. Very nice interaction with these folks and incredibly helpful with the process and our expectations. We decided to take the plunge and provided a 50% deposit and was given the time line of 8 weeks. All good. We were getting a little excited with anticipation to see how these would look when we got the email they were ready to pick up. I hate to be one of those geeks during the reveal, but my word. What an incredible difference a proper cleaning and restoration of the frames did. We are incredibly proud to have these pieces in our home. The cleaning of the cigar schmaltz from grand pa's cigars for decades and the repairing of the frames was done carefully and with great precision. All the colours were now popping and the dark brooding skies were actually different hues of beautiful blue. We were seeing little items which we didn't even realize were there. I only wish that I would have taken a before picture. I had a very good feeling from these folks when we first went in. So much so, that when we went to pick the paintings up, I brought the other two paintings we had. These were not necessarily our favorite in regards to composition and were in need of a little more attention. They were somewhat yellowed and I didn't think there was much underneath the stains of time. Emily and Ram discussed with us their thoughts and even cleaned a few areas to give us an idea of what they may look like with a good cleaning. That did it. Just a little dab on an area where a yellow curtain was illustrated, revealed the curtains were actually white... So, no brainer and we dropped these off to be restored as well. We look forward to picking them up in early February. So very happy to have found Ram and Emily at Art Restorations.

The staff member who helped me was super cool and really understanding about my budget--I didn't want to spend a ton. He made thoughtful suggestions and even brought out visuals so I could actually see what he was describing, which I really appreciated. They called me first thing Monday morning (right after the holidays!) to let me know it was ready for pickup. When I went to grab it, I was blown away--it looks fantastic! Scarily tempting…read more I've had a surprising number of articles framed by Tom and the attentive staffers at Artworks, personal items and also prints, photographs and art in my capacity running a briefing center at Tivoli and they have never disappointed. They even shadow-boxed and framed my old license plate without batting an eyelash. The framing is done artfully, stylishly, quickly and always ready on time. The suggested colors for matting and molding are always pleasing to the eye, and the end result is an article that looks just as it should on any wall. There is a complete restoration department as well, for old photos or paintings that need a little TLC. Their framing work is not inexpensive, but it is always perfect and worth it. But the gallery of art and artisanal crafts which comprises the well-lit space on West 6th is killing me. It's impossibly beautiful stuff, and increasingly hard to get out of there without spending a small fortune. There is even a room full of art deco and period barware. Crystal, blown glass, woodcraft, metal sculpture, mirrors, art glass--carefully chosen and curated, it's like a museum of fine craftwork and I hate it--it's that good. The nefarious plan has you in the store, waiting for a few minutes as your framed work is produced from out back when something, invariably catches your eye. Damn. I'm wise to you Artworks. I'm keeping my shades on and staring at the wall of frame samples and leaving with my wallet intact.

I remember first coming here in the late 90's to frame an etching from my trip to Venice and receiving a student discount. At their suggestion, it was framed between two panes of glass to excellent effect, not something I'd have considered myself. Today I nearly bought a gorgeous snifter for $36, or a set of cordial glasses from the 40's for about the same. I'll be back when I have a larger apartment -- and when I again drink alcohol. I've uploaded a photo of the bronze shelf-fish I bought here over 10 years ago.

Lauren later replaced the glass in some framed memorabilia, without charging at all! These jobs took some time, but I wasn't in a hurry. I suspect she has a perennial backlog because people appreciate her work and recommend her to friends, which is how I came to know of her. Her home is an interesting place to visit: she has a lot of antique household objects like phones and games in her customer reception area. Her first language is Spanish but there was no communications barrier. She is now training her adult daughter, a native speaker of English, in these very specialized skills.
