Born and raised in Chicago, the one thing that I miss after a gluten sensitivity diagnosis has been pizza. That was until tonight when I ordered a Veggie Supreme. Just had lunch there, usually go in and have pizza for dinner. Seems like the service, even with the Covid restrictions, has gotten much better. I don't see many of the past servers in there? The gal with the white FedEX face mask rocked!! Great attitude, very attentive and excellent server. Great to finally get out and sit in a restaurant. I've eaten here a few times and honestly to deal with that crappy service ill never be back. A few Sundays ago I went and the guy treated me like a peasant on the street when doing my Togo order and I just left today bc I never got waited on!!! I went to the front initially and asked to sit on the patio. The guy who basically was ignoring me at first told me to have a seat and someone will be with me. I'm guessing he never told the girl and/or she just completely ignored me. Now I know black ppl get a bad rep but its a pizza joint!! I just wanted to eat. I'm pregnant and I'm hungry! So now that you have pissed the pregnant girl off I'll be sure to call the manager as well. Yep, that's a first fellow yelpers but after waiting 20 mins for service I got quite annoyed and just got up and left. Went in on a Friday night, limited sitting at Midtown location. Freezing in dining room, front door and back door constantly opening with nothing blocking the outside air. The pizza here is sub-par. First, let's deal with the thin-crust issue. I understand some people like it, but to me it just means you were mistreated during your formative years. Meh. That's about all I can say for this place. It's kind of a Midtown staple, but only because of its location. The pizza is subpar, at best. I love thin crust pizza, and this pizza fits that bill, however the crust is like a saltine cracker without the saltine. Pluses: They have a pretty wide variety of toppings available, and a toppings 'happy hour' between 4p-6p daily. They also offer calzones (which I love!). Their pre-topped pizzas are pretty basic, the meats, veggie, bbq...all pretty typical for a Memphis pizza joint. Major plus: The staff here are hilarious! You can tell that they all get along really well, which, given their ages, I'm pretty impressed that there seems to be a lack of drama between them all. They clearly enjoy their jobs and working together, and it gets passed on to the customers...downside to this is that they tend to get a little wrapped up in their friendships and don't come to the table as often as they could...not enough of a bad thing to make me not come back. The staff save this place, in my opinion. It'd be awesome if they created a tastier crust and served it instead of the cracker it comes on. But, that cracker may be what makes MPC famous...who knows? I'm rounding up on the stars (really, it's 3 1/2 in my book...good, solid pizza); they support bike lanes and, if you've been reading my other reviews, that's kind of a big deal to me. The pizza is really good, I used to swear by their calzone's. You can build your own! They don't have a huge wine/beer selection, but you'd be hard pressed not to find something that you like with the list that they do have. At least, beer-wise; domestics, micro-brews (just a few) and a decent selection of imports. The alternative pizza - no sauce - is one of their staples. I enjoy the vegetable supreme and ultimate cheese, though, I've had the blackened chicken and bbq chicken in the past and they were both, "spank yo mama" good. If you prefer Chicago style thick crust pizza, this is not the place for you. They lean more towards NY style, cracker crust. On my last visit, I saw someone eating a sandwich, which simply didn't compute with me. So...I can't vouch for their sandwiches. They could be knock out, but I can't go there and not order pizza. Over-priced, bland, boring, BLAH. The best thing I can say about this place is that the servers are always friendly towards me. Salty, slow, and sub-par. Waited 40 minutes for pizza to arrive after ordering while others around us got their pizzas first. Had a 20 minute gap in the space-time continuum in which the waitress seemed to forget about us. When the food arrived, I bit into my sandwich to taste....salt. And more salt. I felt like I was biting into a sodium stick that had a bit of meat flavor. The portions for the half salad/half sandwich were fairly generous and you did get some chips with the sandwich, but overall it wasn't very interesting. I had a slice of pizza that my dining companions had ordered and it tasted about as dull as a Digiorno. I don't get the loyalty so many Memphians have to MPC. Our group went to Memphis Pizza Café for lunch recently. What a treat. We all decided on the Calzone. Of course all the cheeses blended wonderfully with our "extra ingredients" - incredible flavor and texture. We decided that the crust tasted somewhat like those little Oyster Crackers you put in soup. This added a nice touch that was unexpected. Our wait staff were courteous and professional which made our experience a good one. I haven't had the pizza - yet - but I will simply have to go back to try it out before too much longer. This is the hippest location for MPC I've been to in Memphis. Love the location and interior decor. Very cozy and has a completely different feel from the other locations I've been to. The food is up to par with MPC's usual deliciousness. The folks that work there are very friendly. We happened to be there at a time when the place was fairly swamped. It took our server some time to get to us, and it took a while to get their attention when we needed something. But it was very understandable considering how busy the place was. We were a big group and ended up getting the veggie pizza, salads, and sandwiches. All very delicious. I would definitely come here again though, and would recommend this place for a good date night when you're not looking for something fancy for a special occasion. Also keep in mind that parking will be a bit of a hassle considering the location of this place. It will take a while to find a spot especially if you don't want to pay for parking. read more

I came here the other day for lunch and the service was awful. Waited 5-7 minutes at the door just for a table and no one greeted me during that wait. The best customer service I received were glances from all 4 of the waitresses. When I finally went up to the counter, their employee told me that it was "seat yourself", something one of their employee's should have told me 6 minutes ago... I got around to trying Memphis Pizza Cafe last Saturday night and my experience can be summed up as: Meh. Our waitress was sweet and accommodating considering we ended up with more people than I expected and had to switch tables. I love that they offer slices any time of the day. That's a great selling point for me, as I love trying all the different specialties a place has to offer...that is, if the pizza were better. I tried a slice of their version of supreme. The toppings seemed fresh and there was plenty of meat, but the crust was awful. Now, I love a well-executed thin crust, but this was not that. It was thin, but crunchy as can be. Think: a crappy, off-brand grocery store pizza made in your oven. At least it was pretty cheap; my bill for a slice and a beer was about 8. I think this place could be alright if they modified their crust recipe. I ate here for years as a teenager. I worked at 3 locations. The owner (Gary) is the bomb. The "dirt" on the pizza, that secret no one knows, is excellent. Love this place. The pizza is great, but I especially like it because it gives me a sense of nostalgia. I can't be objective about it: sorry not sorry. As of right now this location only has a 3-star average, which I find surprising. I have always had good service. As with any restaurant, they do get slammed every now and then by big groups that need tables pulled together, with a million kids running around everywhere. Which brings me to my next point... MPC is fantastic for groups and kids, but if you do have a big group, please call ahead. It's just the not-rude thing to do. Give them some warning, and give them a break when there are a lot of people there. Right now there's a lot of construction in Overton Square, but you can still enter from the back via a little sidewalk ramp. You won't see it until you're right in front of it, so just walk by. Or enter through the front on Madison. I brought my little dog to hang out with me while I ate on the patio, and my server was so sweet. She brought me a little take-out container of water for him, since I left his dish in the car. I didn't even have to ask. Some of the other servers and customers came out to pet him. It's just that kind of really chill place. My order never changes: half-sweet tea, a half dinner salad with vinaigrette, and alternative pizza with pineapples added. read more

The pizza is almost always solidly good. I say "almost always" because there are times when the pizza is not up to par. Memphis Pizza Cafe is always voted the best pizza in Memphis. There is a reason for that. When this place is "on" the pizza is unbeatable. However, there are "off days" when the pizza is less than stellar. The crust is why you love this pizza. It is a traditional thin crust that is always very crispy and is always baked to perfection. If you prefer or want a thick crust pizza, do not eat here. It is not even an option. However, don't cross this place off of your list simply because of the lack of a thick crust pizza. You will be making a huge mistake. I always go for a meat and vegetable combination pizza, made up of some type of combination of pepperoni or sausage combined with onions, mushrooms, peppers, or some other type of topping that I'm in the mood for at the time. The toppings are always very fresh, except on those few occasions when it seems like the waitstaff is gotten a bit lazy. This leads me to my next conclusion regarding this place. The staff is, at times, very lackluster. It oftentimes seems that they could not care less about the customer...or anything for that matter. However, 99% of the time, the service is very adequate and very courteous. I digress... Bottom line, I love Memphis Pizza Cafe. Definitely a solid 3 1/2 stars, but the fact that it is local easily bumps it up to 4 stars. read more

So there was a recent twitter poll on a local talk radio show and Memphis Pizza Cafe won going away for the best pizza (not a chain) in the Memphis area. So I thought I would give it a shot if it was that overwhelmingly good. I went to the Midtown location on Madison. Atmosphere was good and the staff professional and polite. The pizza (a cafe supreme with black olives added) was okay. Not great. Not exceptional, but okay. Maybe I was just expecting more based upon the poll. Good pizza is so subjective and I understand that. If you like thin crust, that part is perfect. I guess I was more disappointed with the quality of the toppings. The beef, sausage, pepperoni, were all little balls of processed meat. The cheese was somewhat lacking in quantity (if there is a next time I will order extra cheese). So in short it was an okay experience, and they certainly have their niche in the Memphis area. Is it the best in the area? In my subjective opinion there are several that are better. We had originally tried to get Indian food at two different locations that were closed at 3:00 pm on a weekday. Both of the places we tried closed for about an hour midday to prepare for the dinner crowd. As we looked around, we figured you can't go wrong with pizza. Boyyyyyyyeeeee, were we mistaken. Let's start with a good, hit the bad and finish with a nice ambiance. The service here was good. The staff were friendly and working hard to make sure their tables were given the proper attention. The pizza - I honestly rather have DiGiorno or a Kroger deli pie. The pie over all rated somewhere between microwave and premade crust. The toppings were fresh and the cheese was ok at best. The best part about this dig; the outdoor deck in the back. And, the serve the local brew. I believe it was Ghost River. It is really beautiful back there. Overall, go for the beer and the outdoor deck. The pizza wasn't filling and lack substance in the crust. The bathrooms had the decor and feel of a college fraternity house from the Animal House era. Grandma would not feel comfortable in there. The area looks like it is being revived and that's always a good thing. Hope that movement finds the john. read more

We stopped into MPC looking for a casual place to relax and have a pizza after a day walking around midtown. That's pretty much exactly what we found. The inside reminds me of the many a college pizza joint, with a little bit of wear and beer signs on the walls. The pizza was good if a little on the dry/done side, the beer was cold, and it was a good value. The side salads that come with the pizza are very much "pizza place" salads, basically just lettuce and tomatoes. The service was a little slow all around but not excessively so. Nothing about it was particularly outstanding but it was a nice, relaxed time here and I will stop in again if I'm in the area looking for some pizza. read more

I got the Cafe Supreme with no onions. The toppings were diced and chopped into small pieces, so you get a little bit of everything in each bite. The toppings did tend to roll off the pizza and half the toppings ended up on my plate. I enjoyed the toppings and the sauce. However, the crust was thin and bland. It had the same taste as a saltine cracker. The atmosphere was cozy, hip decor. Our waitress was kind and accommodating and refreshed our drinks often.
