I decided that I would not burden my family and friends with helping me move this time, so I called up Men on the Move. I called them the day before to confirm my 12-1pm arrival window. I'm glad I did, because they were trying to tell me that it was between 12 and 2pm. I mentioned that this would not work because my new building has strict rules, and that they would have to be done by 5pm. The movers arrived the next day at 1pm. Upon arrival, they seemed professional and started to move my stuff out of my old apartment. Some of the movers did not speak English very well, so our communication was a little off, but things seemed to be working out. Even though the majority of my items were packed in boxes, one of the movers seemed to have a bit of an attitude if certain items were not packed properly (like my desktop and monitor). I have an IKEA entertainment center that they would not move because they would have to take it apart. I had to go back an get it at a later date. Its a good thing that I chose to move before the end of the month. After they finished getting the items that they would take, they followed me to my storage unit. They said that they would not be responsible for lamps, and made me put them in my car. They loaded up all of my furniture that I had in storage and proceeded to my new apartment. They put all of the items into my apartment and made the 5 pm deadline. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just used them to move all of my large items. I turned to Yelp to find movers for a local move (within the same zip code) and selected Men On The Move Moving Co. because of the favorable reviews. My experience was consistent with others in that it was very positive and economical. I started by filling out a move form online. Within a few hours I was quoted a reasonable price. I was quoted a rate of $89 per hour, using three men, for just under $400. Note: With other moving companies I've used in the past, I was quoted three people and one didn't show up. That caused the move to take longer and cost more given their pricing structure. Needless to say, I was hesitant. After a brief call to confirm, they quoted me a start time between 8 am and 9 am. No deposit down either. They showed up at 8:15 am with three guys and started by wrapping all my furniture in tarps, taking apart furniture as needed, etc. They worked quickly but carefully and had the truck loaded in about 45 minutes. After arriving at my new place, they unloaded and then assembled my furniture. They asked where I wanted things and helped me position the bigger pieces. Again, they worked hard, quickly and carefully. In the end, they were spot on with their quote. I paid with a Discover card once everything was complete. We had boxed all of our belongings prior to their arrival, so we were using them to transport everything. They were very careful with the boxes, and wrapped all our furniture in moving blankets. Punctual and professional. The advantage of getting older is that you have the resources to not have to call in favor cards and use friends and family for a move. We've used Men on the Move twice in the past three years for moves. Both times, the company responded via email (I indicated that this was my preference) immediately with the information needed for an estimate. The price was more than fair. Both times, the movers showed up on time with all the necessary materials. They were friendly, responsible, fast, and careful with our belongings. The two types of moves were very different. In the first, we had to coordinate with the apartment building management to access the service elevator during a specific window of time. That move was local, from the apartment to a townhome. The second move was placing a portion of our belongings in storage. I did a quick walk-through of the house and pointed out what would remain for the new owners and what would be placed in storage until our new house was ready. Overall we had a good experience with Men on the Move. First of all, I looked into at least 10 different moving companies in the area and MOTM was by far the most reasonably priced. I got some pretty outrageous quotes (including one for over $1000 to move us out of our 800 some square foot 1-bedroom apartment. I wish I was kidding.) They also don't upcharge you for a lot of things like other companies do. For example, your moving time doesn't start until they arrive on site. Marvin, the owner, was very easy to work with. Because of the availability of the freight elevators at our apartments, we weren't able to start the move until after 3 pm on Sunday. Generally they like to start moves much earlier in the day, but when I told Marvin that the times weren't flexible he said they would make it work. The three guys (wish I could remember their names) arrived squarely in the middle of the time frame they told us. Unfortunately someone in the building was blocking our reserved loading dock for a while so they spent a while just waiting around for him to move before suggesting that they get started on wrapping and prepping things in the apartment (which is probably what should've happened to begin with - oh well). There were a couple factors that were outside of their control (like their truck was too tall to get down to our loading dock, so they had to park outside of the garage and walk things over to the freight elevator), but there were also some other ways we felt they could've managed their time better. All in all it took about 5 hours for the move, but we can't even be TOO upset about that because their overtime charges are super reasonable compared to anyone else. They gave me a time window (between 8-9) on Saturday and the movers were there at 8:10. The two gentlemen who moved my furniture were efficient, courteous and careful with all my stuff. They worked hard and fast, which is what I was looking for. Where they could have lagged and taken their time to double the time (and payment), they didn't. They wrapped up everything in moving blankets to keep it safe in the short move and they placed all the furniture exactly where I wanted it to go. They also disassembled the furniture that required it and reassembled it correctly. When the move was done, the final price was reasonably within the quoted amount. There were several points where I mentioned to my wife that they were being extra cautious with our items, which is better than not careful enough (in my opinion). I would definitely hire these guys again if I needed movers. They only got 4 out of 5 stars because the guys called on their way to the new place and asked if they could stop for a 20 minute lunch. I agreed because we needed to get a few things set up anyway. Forty minutes after they called they arrived at the new place. This wouldn't have been a big deal, but we were charged for this time. We hired them to move from Alexandria to Rockville in April. The communication was off right from the beginning with different quotes from Marvin and Oscar. While Oscar quoted 4-6 hours after touring the apartment, Marvin sent me a quote for 6-8 hours. I had to spend sometime over the phone to clarify the confusion. Marvin was insistent that they can't change it despite the fact that his employee who toured the apartment held a different opinion. The movers arrived on time but everything went south from there. They falsely claim on their website that they are BBB accredited. They are not. This was with my husband helping them half of the time. They took a lunch break which seemed to go on forever. They left Alexandria at 12.25 with us and arrived in Rockville at 2.45 pm. The result was that I was charged $200 more than the original quote provided to me ($850 v $650), of course this is not counting the time we were waiting for the movers to show up in our new location. Furthermore, in our new home, Oscar clumsily dumped some moving boxes near the water heater, which created a messy water leak situation. This led to water spilling all over the foyer and utility room. All this when movers had just started putting in our stuff with the inevitable result that there were dirty footprints all over our floor and carpet. Not to mention that it slowed down the move-in process with more people navigating the same entryway since the maintenance guys also had to get to work when movers were still at work. Further, not only the water had to be turned off, but also the water heater needed to be replaced which took 3 good hours for the maintenance to fix. We got bad scuff marks on our filing cabinet and when I pointed it out to Oscar twice, he didn't respond with so much as an apology. He was generally disrespectful of our space in that he wasn't too careful with picking up tape and such after himself whilst re-assembling. Marvin called me the next day and we settled on a refund for damaging our furniture but he has not mailed me the check in three weeks and repeated reminders over email and phone since failed to elicit a favorable response. When I finally managed to reach him over phone today, he did a volte face and said he never agreed to pay me anything. I would say "buyer beware" of movers who make false claims, go back on their word at the drop of a hat and do not own up to mistakes. read more

What can you say about a moving company? I just used them this weekend and all I can say is that they did an amazing job. They were right on time, worked as a team, very efficient, very careful, and they listened to my few concerns regarding being careful not to scratch walls or floors with furniture. They did not cause any damage at all. The way the wrap each individual piece of furniture and shrink wrap it is awesome. If I keep saying good things my review will sound fake, but I 100% would recommend Men on the Move to my friends and family. In my 4 DC-based moves, Men on the Move was the absolute best moving service I've used. For starters, the 3 gentlemen that helped us move were fast, polite and careful with our belongings. In 3 hours, they moved us from a 2 story townhouse on one side of Alexandria to a 3 story one the other side of town. I've never seen anyone practically jog up stairs carrying a coffee table before! Also, unlike a really horrible experience I've had with movers wanting to charge me cash to go "off the books" (note: those folks were neither starving nor students if you catch my drift), these guys were reputable, didn't tack on silly charges (ex. use of moving blankets or extra tape) and didn't charge me for the quarter hour that we ran over. To top it all off, I had to ask "is this right?" when I got the bill because it was so low ($89 per hour for 3 movers and the truck, with 1 hour charge for transit). They were good the first time I used them, but completely unprofessional this time. Said they would be here at 12:45. Then said 1:00. They didn't show up till 12:20!!!! Used them twice; both in Old Town Alexandria. Both moves were satisfactory. They did their job. My only qualm is that they work slow. The time that it takes for 3 men to carry 3 bins, I was able to carry 2. One of their guys saw me moving 2 bins and said, "you're very strong". Strength has nothing to do with it. The bins have a 30lb capacity. There's handles and snap locks. An avg sized man can carry one in each arm without worrying about dropping it or the lock loosening. Another issue is that they damage one of my dressers, of which I was compensated for with a discount for the move. I guess the discount offset the damage for the dresser I planned on tossing in the near future anyways. Despite these issues, I would still recommend them; just not my first choice of movers to hire. read more

They wrapped up our furniture super quick and got it out of our old apartment fast, even with a delay (people trying to steal the service elevator we had reserved for moving). They got all of our furniture moved into our new place in about 1.5/2 hours tops (though we did only use them for our heavy furniture, like our sofa, desks, etc). Their rates are really reasonable and competitive for this area, they showed up on time, and none of our things were damaged during the move. Wow, I am very sad to say that I received some of the worst customer service from Marvin who is either the manager at Men on the Move or the only person that seems to work there. First things first, I call at 1:00 PM only to receive a message that they are closed. I figured that was odd because it was the middle of the day. Ok.....maybe they were at lunch because I called again around 2:00 and they answer. I really wanted to believe they were a reputable company due to some other reviews I read. I spoke to Marvin who told me that my move would be $500 with 3 men, FANTASTIC! But then he calls back and asks could he come look at my home to give me a flat rate? I thought...hmmmm, why? But I agreed because I honestly wanted to see what he'd come up with in terms of the figure compared to what he'd told me earlier. So, we agreed to meet up between 4:15 and 4:30. Well, the time comes and goes and there is no Men on the Move employee in sight. I call the office and what do ya know.....Marvin is still there. I live approximately 20 minutes away from the business and in rush hour traffic, there was no way he'd make it to my home by even 5:15 if he was still sitting in Alexandria, VA. I expressed my frustrations because I left work early just to meet him at the time he insisted. He says "It's really hard to leave here and get to you on time, how about another 30 minutes?" Ummm, not something you want to hear from someone whose job is to be on time to pick up and deliver items! I told him that at that point, I could not wait around for him, especially after he didn't even bother to give me or my husband a call to let us know that he wouldn't be here at the agreed upon time. What made me write this review was his last words to me! "We are not the business that you need to be working with then if you're like that about time!" Well, actually, I am like that about time and I don't expect a business to show up to a meeting an entire hour late without even calling first to let the customers know. I submitted their form online. After 4 days, I never heard from them, so I figured I would give them a call. The gentlemen I spoke to looked me up in the computer and found my request for a quote. Men on the move was recommended to us by some friends that had used them recently. I think the price they quoted us was more than fair compared to some of the other companies we checked out. They showed up on time. They were all (3) friendly and courteous when we started, but as the day wore on, I could not say the same for one of them. They did a great job of protecting our carpets and new hardwood floors. There were 3 small nicks on the drywall they made, and an old shelf that broke, but nothing major. They were super efficient and loaded as much as they could in the truck (not everything we wanted), filling up the whole thing. My only complaint is, we did buy them lunch, they took a 20 minute break in the morning and almost an hour break for lunch. We were told by our friends they brought their own lunch and would not charge us for the time the lunch break. They ended up charging us for 10 hours (2 hours over the allotted time) for the whole time they were there. We were planning on tipping them for their hard work, but after talking to one of them, he decided to take less money and charge us for the whole time. (wanted to charge us for 10 hours instead of 9) I feel bad b/c we didn't tip them, but we saved money in the long run. If there was a 3.5 stars option, that's what i would have given. read more

I had high hopes for this company based on the reviews on here. They also happned to be the cheapest quote I got for my move - guess you get what you pay for. They were nice enough, but were not the least bit careful with my stuff. They would bump the walls and drop things right in front of me, and then just shrug like it was nothing. I found stuff I very clearly marked FRAGILE under a pile of much heavier boxes, which of course meant my glass ware was crushed. I was very upset as it was very expensive but the owner wasn't apologetic in the slightest and said he couldn't cover anything because he "didn't know how I packed it." It was all very well cushioned in brand new boxes but anything that is glass will break if tossed around and crushed, no matter how one packages it. I lost a lot of valuable property in this move - I would not recommend them. read more

They moved some furniture from storage for me and they were polite, friendly, and really strong. They informed me that my leather sleeper sofa was the heaviest couch they had ever carried (I believe it), but carried it up to my fourth floor condo without complaint. They were friendly and polite and easy to work with. My only complaint was that they arrived 15 minutes late (due to getting lost).
