When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. Sometimes even lower. That really doesn't matter though, because the helpful service I receive here more than makes up for a few extra pennies. The staff are super friendly and have helped me with lots of projects along the way. I needed a weird part that wasn't available anywhere else and they found it for me in their storeroom and gifted it to me. I needed a certain type of paint on a holiday-eve and they spent the extra time going through their stash to find a suitable product. When the entire northeast region is out of salt and they have a shipment coming in, they were willing to make arrangements so that some was waiting for me when I showed up that evening. And when I need advice (and honestly, it seems to be always) they are a lot more reliable and useful than trying to randomly search Youtube. It is the smaller hardware stores that provide what most do it yourselfers (read: amateurs) really need: attention. Because of that, I will keep coming back to here.

But this store caught my attention when I saw an ad for them on TV. They claimed that they have items not found in other stores. They also emphasized that they offer friendly and readily available service. Today, in search of a particular style cabinet knob, after nothing met my wife's satisfaction in Lowe's, Home Depot, and several other stores, we tried Chance's on our way through Latham. The first thing we noticed was a friendly greeting from an employee helping another customer in the parking lot. Walking through the store we saw everything very well organized and nicely displayed in a clean environment. Once we found what we were in search of, we met that same welcoming employee (owner?) from the parking lot on our way to the register. He was truly friendly and made the shopping experience a pleasure. The item we purchased could have been ordered for less from Lowe's, but it was not available today and we've never received such a sincere welcome in any big-box store. There is definitely truth in advertising from Chance's Hardware store.

When I walked in someone asked if I needed help, and I explained what I was looking for. Actually, I explained it three times because the person seemed to have trouble either hearing me or understanding English. I can't put my finger on it, but it was a bit frustrating. I first asked if they had assortment boxes and she went to check. She came back and said no, so I asked for specific sizes which she had to check. Finally, she brought everything they had out. I asked for two packages in each of the two sizes I needed, but they only had one of each so I bought both. Their credit card machine wasn't working right and it took multiple tries with multiple cards to get the deal done. I had some free time while they were searching for stuff so I looked around. This place sells a motley collection of things such as tools (wrenches, saws), hardware (caster wheels, chain), adhesives (caulk, Loctite), and power tools. Many of the things had a coating of dust, and nothing was priced out. For a place like this, customer service is important. Not only did it take them 20 minutes to get my transaction done, but another commercial customer who needed help couldn't get the information he needed on some products. Did I mention that there were 5 employees in the store this morning, but they were more interested in the Halloween donuts that someone had brought in. I should have just bought the stuff online. McMaster Carr has the same things for seven times less. Service is fast. Payment is easy. I can only recommend coming here if you know what you need, know that they have it, are willing to pay cash, and have some free time.

HOME DEPOT A CONTINUNG SAGA OF GROSS INCOMPENTENCE. Again,…read morethey do not even rate one stare. In my review of Monday, June 26th I told of this company's complete screw up of a floor installation. Today I will report on the ongoing story of how they cannot even refund my money (around $10,000) without sticking it to me. On Tuesday they picked up the flooring and said they will issue a credit to my credit card less a restocking. This fee will be refunded by check. Yesterday I received a call that I could come to the store today (June 26) and get a cash refund. Great. Home Depot is about 35 minutes away and I had to pick something up about a 1/2 hour north of the store and I could pay for it in cash as I told the guy I would. Perfect. So, I see Kerry at the Pro Desk and, surprisingly, they cannot give me a cash refund or issue me a check. They said they could yesterday but that was yesterday and in less than 24 hours that changed and nobody can fix it. They must contact their "tech people" to work this out some time in the future. This means I must drive 30 south to my bank, withdraw the cash and then drive an hour back north, passing Home Depot, to pick up and pay for what I ordered. The only good news is the guy I was picking up from was way more competent than Home Depot and had what I ordered, living up to his word something Home Depot simple does not do. So, Home Depot has their product back in the store and I have zip. TALK ABOUT THE GANG THAT COULD NOT SHOOT STRAIGHT AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT TAKING CARE OF A CUSTOMER.
