Experience inside was good, outside in lumberyard was the absolute worst example of assistance or customer service, not due to lack of staff, there were 5-6 riding around or sitting on forklifts but chatting amongst themselves, moving to end of building, totally ignoring and then disappearing when waved down. One did pick up some plastic trash, one did move some trash cans from one end of bldg to the other with their forklift, rest did absolutely nothing! Stopped at the Menards in Grimes this morning. We needed a new wrench set, socket set, and can of spray foam. I paid for the tools...total was $70. Ok maybe a bit high for small sets of those two types of tools, but, they are good quality, and I want to be able to depend on them. As always, I parked in a handicap spot just outside their "In" door. I knew I could come back out that same door, as I've done it before, and have seen others do it every time I visit a Menards. There's also a shorter walking distance from the handicap parking space to that door, so given the situation with my lower back, it should all make sense, right? Ooooh but no. NOT to a Menards worker this morning . We went through a check out lane to pay, and since the registers are clear at the other end of the store,...and since I parked at the opposite end, i thought I would "kill two birds with one stone" as it were, and return the courtesy mobility scooter and get it plugged back in, and then also exit through the same door we came in. A nice customer (coming in through the gate instead of the turnstile) held the gate for me so I could get the scooter back through it. I thanked him and drove the scooter back over to where it normally sits. Got it plugged in and started walking out. It was at this point we were approached by a lady with a Menards vest on, hair pulled back in a ponytail, who said "Ladies have you paid? Have you gone through a register with those items? We need you to exit through the registers." We both said yes and that we just came back down to this door from the registers. (Again, remember the registers are at the opposite end of the store.) I was about to add that we had parked just outside the "In" door and she interrupted... She says "Can I see your receipts?" We look at each other. shrug, and say "sure". We presented them. She looked them over carefully. Opened (without asking) the Menards bags, which were STILL being held by my spouse, and rummaged around. We had double-bagged the wrench and socket sets because they're heavy and we didn't want the bag to break. She says "Oh. I see. You double-bagged it?" We said "Yes, because they are heavy." She says "hmm. ok, here's your receipt (hands me mine), and here's your receipt (hands my spouse's receipt over.)" She then says (AS she's turning to walk away) "thank you ladies have a nice day". Neither of us responded. Now, aside from the fact that her attitude was a huge problem and needs to be taken care of by management...She *allowed us* the time to roll through the gate with the mobility scooter, get it plugged in, and start walking to the door, and THEN proceeded to accost us on the assumption that we were in the middle of a $70 heist of a 10 piece Masterforce wrench set and 21 piece socket set. She clearly saw me ON the mobility scooter. But either didn't have the ability to put 2 and 2 together and consider that I'm most likely parked in a close by handicap spot...or she just didn't care. I carry with me a copy of my doctor's letter which I submitted to the DOT as proof that I qualify for the handicap placard. Should I have pulled that out and showed her? Or should I be forced to explain to her that the distance from the "Out" door to my parking spot is greater than from the "In" door I came in through and now needed to exit through?!?! That would be absolutely humiliating. But, it's either that, or be made to feel like a common criminal, all because I needed a shorter walking distance to my car, and also wanted to return the mobility scooter to it's designated place and get it plugged in!! I really appreciate Menards efforts to keep a clean well-maintained place and require everyone to wear Masks. They have lots of basic garden supplies that I use especially soil. Their selection is good and their staff is generally knowledgeable for a big box store. They have a variety of things that I needed for my car. They also have a wide variety of things that you need for your house or garage from lumber to insulation to lighting. your staff are always willing to try to help you understand the correct way to do any kind of installation that you need to do. read more

It's Menards.....I know a hardware store....this location is huge. I was concerned how prepared they would be for Black Friday. I was very impressed with the front of the store being roped off. I have been to other Menards where "line jumpers" on Black Friday infuriate those that waited in line. The staff was over the top friendly. Everyone was smiling. One staff member thanked people for shopping as she was helping chase down items for customers. There were staff at every corner. I have never checked out Menards on a Black Friday that quickly. On November 23, 2019, I ordered 11 sheets of paneling online. I printed of the receipt. On November 25, I contacted support as I couldn't get into my account. They sent a reply Nov 26th. They also sent me another attachment meant for another person. The information was correct - both the email address and phone number. I was NOT sent a receipt for the order. I got into my account and saw that it was to arrive by Dec 12. On the 13th, I called and they told me it had arrived 12/4/19. No email or phone call telling me it was in. 12/15/2019, we went to Menards to pick up the order. We went to the gate and showed the security person what I had printed out. He said he could not let us get into the yard without the bar code on the receipt. I told him they never sent me a receipt. I asked, why couldn't he let us drive right up to the pick-up order desk, walk in and get it straightened out? He said he couldn't let us in. We drove back to the front, I went in, walked all the way through the store, finally got the receipt, went back through the store, and got in the truck. We went back to the gate, got in and went to the yard pick up the order. The Menards person pulled the order down with a fork lift, got it into position to put on our trailer when my husband noticed it had been hit along the sides with the fork lift, damaging the paneling. I believe that Menards probably inspects the special orders when they come in so I think it probably happened the same day the young man retrieved it. The Menards person took it back in, made out a new order and supposedly reordered it. This time, I had a receipt in hand. When we got home, I called and asked for the manager. I spoke with Brandon, told him the situation and he said he would see if he could put a rush on it. He promised he would call me back the following day, no matter what, to let me know. 12/16/2019, Monday, I received no phone call from Brandon and no email regarding the reorder. 12/17/2019, Tuesday, I called Brandon. He said he was under the weather but was putting a rush on it. 12/20, Friday, that I noticed that the new order number still wasn't showing but that I could contact the vendor on the Menard.com website. I called DPI (where the order was placed) and spoke with Cindy Prahl. She said there was a new order but no rush on it. The order actually appeared on the website when I was speaking to her! I explained the situation and she said she would make sure that the order was secure and better packed. She also gave me the name Bobbi Zahf in case I needed to speak to someone again at DPI as she was leaving for vacation. 12/21, I called for Brandon again. He is gone so I spoke with Mike. I explained the whole situation again. I told him I had spoken with the vendor and no rush had been put on the order. And it wasn't to be shipped until Jan 6. I also told him I didn't receive any email for the reorder, either. Again. Mike called me back as he said he would. He told me they were getting ready to ship at the end of the week and would call me to let me know. 12/26/2019, Bobby Zahf from DPI called me as Cindy is on vacation. She let me know that the paneling went out today and should be in Shell Rock tomorrow. 12/28/2019 Mike called me to tell me the shipment should be in on Sunday around 1:30 and he would let me know. I asked that he check the shipment over for damage. 12/29/2019, I checked the website to see that the shipment had arrived in Grimes at 2:30. Again, no email or phone call. 12/29/2019 Mike called me in the evening to let me know that it had arrived and it looked good. The only reason that someone called me was because I had raised Cain about the whole situation. If I had not talked to Mike, I never would have gotten a call. 1/1/2020 We picked up the order. Fortunately, it was in good condition. I did notice that on the receipt they had given me when the paneling was reordered was a "contract". "Menards agrees to email Purchaser when the product is available to pick-up". That is a lie. We haven't used Menards (we used to years ago) for years. We have found that you can't get help and if you do find someone, they are just as likely to tell you "I don't know." Plus, they don't give Veterans discounts. Yes, they have promotions for 11% rebate on anything you buy but only after you fill out the paperwork, mail it in and HOPE it gets there. The rebate I mailed in? I'm still waiting and I mailed it in a day or two after we ordered and paid for the paneling. That was Nov. 23. Today is Jan 3. When and if we do get the rebate, it will be in the form of a coupon to take BACK into Menards! From now on, we will stick with Home Depot. When we ask questions, we get expert advice. When we make a purchase, we get a 10% Veterans discount, no coupons, just a discount. Will we go back to Menards? NO. read more

Menards has a terrible customer service culture. Walking in the doors you're unlikely to be greeted. Don't expect to be greeted as you walk past employees inside the store either. Should you have a question it's best not to ask it as your mere presence will physically pain their employees. If you're lucky you may receive a snark response. The Menards yard staff was so helpful with ordering and loading! They brought the pallets over to help us expedite loading the trailer with a work load of soil and mulch and helped load too.
