I saw Chris Haas at Menocal Family Practice for the first time two weeks ago. I was amazed at how well I was treated there. The ENTIRE staff was thorough and professional while remaining warm. I had a lot of questions and many concerns. I haven't had insurance for a few years and because of that, I let had some issues go. Chris never rushed me, answered all of my questions and made me feel confident that he would work with me until I felt better. I'm very disappointed with how my visit was handled today, June 13th 2026. Earlier this month, I called the office and was told that Saturday visits were walk‑in only from 8 AM to 12 PM. Based on that information, I canceled my June 11th appointment so I could come in on June 13th for two important referrals. When I arrived a little after 10 AM, I was told walk‑ins were no longer accepted after 10, something that was never mentioned on the phone and is not listed on the website. What made this even more frustrating is that other walk‑ins who arrived at the same time or after me were checked in without an issue. The mixed messages and inconsistent treatment were extremely disappointing, especially when this visit was important for my ongoing care. Waste of time waited two hours to get seen for them to tell me to go to the ER. after the ER, after I go to the hospital for a check up in their office, I have to wait 70 minutes for nobody to see me and they're probably gonna say that I can't have no pain medicine so there's no point of wasting time. I go to the Hagerstown office. I have no issues with the Provider herself (Amy Evans-Kegley) but I can never ever ever get through to ANYONE when it's time for my refills. They don't respond when my pharmacy faxes them, they don't answer the phone when I call for a week straight at various times. They don't call back when you leave a number to call back. The entire reason I found this office in the first place was so I could get refills on my maintenance medication and that never happens without me having to call repeatedly for 2ish weeks and usually I am without my medications for over 2 weeks every single month. 0 stars, get some better staff. Answer your fucking phone. Refill prescriptions like a damn Dr.'s office is meant to. read more

Dr Menocal is a good Doctor but his phone staff is terrible. I would give him 5 stars but his phone staff get a 2 star rating. No matter if you call early or late, it goes to an answering machine. The voice prompt says you can go to website to make an appt but they do not tell you the web address. Or you can be on hold forever and nobody answers the phone. Another option is to leave a message, but I do not get a call back by the end of the day, or the next morning. I wind up having to drive to the office on Key Parkway to make an appt. Since he expanded it has gotten worse. I went to him when I moved to Frederick because he was the closest doctor near me. Now , I am thinking it is time to change doctors, to one that has people who answer the phones. I like Dr Menocal but not the way employees do not answer the phone! read more

The doctors are friendly and courteous and provide lots of medical options to treat. There have been two instances in the years I have used this office that I have been misdiagnosed. I been coming here for over a year now & every single time I have a bad experience . If you want to wait an hour , the doctor doesn't give you the right paperwork when you leave. If you call the staff for the right paperwork they say they can't find it or can't figure it out on there end . You'll have a doctor that doesn't listen to you ! If you need a procedure done they won't even give you the right procedure ! I came for my thyroid ! I have to now do all this extra work bc 1 . The doctor gave me the wrong referral 2. The office isn't willing to give me the right referral after I talked to another nurse she said they would 3. Every single person in that office doesn't communicate at all ! They all say I don't know . Why have a doctors office or doctors or nurses if they don't do their jobs properly ! I have to now find a new doctor bc this one is gross ! You go in the waiting room one waiting room is so packed there's no place to sit people breath on your neck from how packed they are ! Then you sit there for over an hour to just go get your vitals done then once that's done you'll have another hour wait in your room ! I waited 3 and a half hours just for my doctor to still not come !! I had to have another provide see me and then that provider didn't even give me the right paperwork or even give me the right specialist to see ! If you have actual medical issues do not go here !! You will die by the time these doctors and nurses take you seriously !!! read more

I've been a patient at Menocal Family Practice for just over a year and received exceptional service from both Melody Evans CRNP and the staff. Melody Evans is no longer with the practice. Recently Menocal had an almost complete staff change and apparently their good service left with their employees. I've been sitting in a room waiting to be seen for 45 minutes. They require patients to arrive 20 minutes early so I've actually been waiting over an hour. As soon as I finish this review, I will be walking out. I went to Menocal twice for my annual physical and I will never be going back! To me, there was a lack of integrity, professionalism, and I just don't think that I can trust this practice. The main issue is that I was assured, twice, that there would be no charge for my last visit. I was told that it would be categorized as a wellness check up which would be no cost to me, but I ended up getting a surprisingly large bill a few weeks later. I, of course, contested the bill, but they would not honor their word. While contesting, I tried multiple times to get a call back which they promised they would, but never got any responses; instead, I got some attitude on the other end of the phone. Even though my main issues are for financial reasons, my thinking is that if they can't be trusted with the billing process then they can't be trusted with my health either. read more

The medical care is fine once you are seen, but they need to get rid of the front desk staff and get some actual professionals in there. Their ineptitude runs the gamut of appointment scheduling errors to being unable to handle prescription refill requests. I love Dr. Menocal! I was a patient of Dr. Menocal years ago when he worked at Parkview Medical Group. When he left the practice in 2006, I was so upset, but because of a few other good doctors in that practice, I decided to stay with them. In June of 2021, I decided to switch back to his practice because I could never get to see a doctor where I was going, only PA's. He is by far the best primary care doctor I have ever had. He is thorough and doesn't take "the wait and see approach" that so many doctors do. He takes the appropriate steps in the beginning and in doing so, my health issues get resolved much more quickly. Before changing doctors I was diagnosed with allergies but after seeing Dr. Menocal, he was a little more concerned about my problem so he ordered a CT scan which showed I had pneumonia. I cannot say enough good things about this man! read more

i went to this doctor for a year in that year he lost paperwork of mine. He gave me the wrong persons prescriptions and when i returned to have mine given to me they made me sit and see him in the office all over again. I always wondered how much they charged the insurance that day after all it was a mistake that a nurse should have been able to go back and correct and send me on my way. His head nurse seems to know more then he does and getting tests done is a pain because they never get the proper papers to you for your particular insurance unless the one nurse does it. read more

While I use to come to the old office when I was a kid it had left a good impression on me. It has been a good couple years since I've been there and they have changed to a newer office. I was greeted by a very unfriendly and unwelcoming person at the front door kinda rude and rushed to sign papers and get my symptoms. I had some signs and symptoms of COVID it really wasn't the reason I was there. I was told to go to the next door, another side of their building where they have people with suspicion of Covid. I thought this was smart and I did appreciate their concern to keep those people in another space. What I didn't like is that if the lobby was somewhat full you'd be standing outside for god who knows how long in the cold which I think is a bit ridiculous when you have sick people already and kids standing in the cold. I think they need to find a system to maybe have people sit in their cars and have a queue to call their patients in or have a online form done to get some of the preliminary stuff out of the way. I got in and I notice that the side with people who may have Covid are seated RIGHT next to each other which the first side was actually somewhat spaced apart for what space they had. I was in there for 2+ hours, mind as well had gone to the ER at that point. They never really asked me for why I'm there and what my concerns were either. I finally get seen by what I'm assuming a nurse practitioner, was rushed into the room and was seated to immediately get a Covid test. I'm already an anxious person and suffer from PTSD with the screaming/crying and tight/congested waiting room for 2+ hours didn't help. Once he comes in he's rushing to get this test done, I asked if it's more invasive one. He did say it was and he was trying to put it in my nose. I shifted away because I need time to process and calm down to prepare myself. I explained to him what my anxiousness where about, he told me it's not a big deal and he's done it many times. I get it but the way that he dealt with this situation and took absolutely no consideration that I am having really bad anxiety about it. He told me if I don't take it I'll have to be quarantined, at that moment I didn't really appreciate the way he dealt with the situation so I'd rather deal with that. I finally told him why I was there and he hastily did his vitals and said I'm fine. I felt like my concerns were brushed off and felt like I was more of an inconvenience to both of us, as if both of our time was wasted. I don't think I'll be coming back or will really reconsider it because I felt like I was more of an annoyance than a patient. This is not how I remembered coming to Dr. Menocals office, he really brightened my day when I was a kid and it made me really want to come back as an adult. I wish I could've seen him and I think it'd had been a totally different experience. If you're reading this, Dr. Menocal, I hope you're doing well and I hope to maybe see you again but please really not only have your front desk people have that patient/helpful/considering/reassuring attitude but also your medical providers. I'm already a very anxious person and hate going to the doctors and experiences like this make it so much worse to come back. I took over 6 years to come back and this is what I come to. I visited Dr. Menocal on I believe two or three separate occasions about 1-2 years ago, my boyfriend also visited him on two occasions, and always accompanied me to my visits. I visited Dr. Menocal because I heard he was friendly, helpful, and took people without insurance without overcharging them. He was recommended by a good friend who had taken her two teenage children here as well. My first experience with him was extremely positive although he did not offer any long term solutions to the chronic stomach and chest pain I was experiencing and visiting him in reference to. He did recommend I change a medication, although did not recommend any, I had to go somewhere else for that. I changed medications and that pain has not been as frequent or severe. I'm not entirely convinced that my chest pain was not just stress related since I was under an extreme amount of stress at that time. My second and third, which would be my last, visits and experience with Dr. Menocal were not as positive. He was not as friendly, seemed preoccupied, annoyed by me, and was rather judgmental. It made me rethink my previous experiences and realized, he overstepped his bounds with a few questions and comments. He continuously told me how against any sort of prescription birth control he was, which is fine, but seemed to be letting his personal and religious opinions dominate his helping me which he is suppose to do. That is what I was paying him to do, that is why I was there! He went as far as to suggest I was old enough (25) to have a baby and should just have one. I explained to him that was not an option but he refused to listen to me when I told him I had to use some sort of prescription contraceptive he never offered me an alternative prescription. I ended up going to planned parenthood and they were far less judgmental. I appreciate that Dr. Menocal sees people without insurance and the office do their best to keep costs down but in the end I'm going to a Medical professional to seek help and a solution to my medical problems. I never got that, I basically wasted my time and money just to have someone give me their personal opinion on things. His office was always extremely busy, usually loud, and usually packed full of people who seemed a little sketchy so perhaps he was jaded. The people behind the desk were usually unforgettable or a bit robotic which I do not like. If you don't like people and don't have any sympathy, don't work in the medical field!!! From my personal experiences and the experiences of my friends, he seems to favor men and belittle women. He liked to bring up my weight but not my boyfriends despite similar "issues". He was somewhat complimentary but it made me feel a little like he was saying since I was female I was expected to be "pretty" or "thin", the first of which he said I was and the last of which he said I was not. I'm there for my health not to inquire about my physical attributes, I hate to be mean because I think he meant it as a harmless observation. Overall I will not visit Dr. Menocal again. We seemed to have a clash of personal opinions over my well being. read more

I have been a patient with this practice for many years. Originally with positive thoughts of the practice and the doctor. In fact I used to recommend this practice to friends. Recently however, I have gotten fed up with the treatment of their patients and the way the office is managed. Unscheduled sick appointments are non-existent. They tell you to come in and you wait for 2+ hours to go to an exam room and then additional time in the exam room. If you are sick and need to see your doctor, you might as well forget it and go to an urgent care. The office staff is often rude and non-caring toward you at check in. Much of the time they are more concerned about sliding the glass window shut and socializing, laughing, and having a good time rather than waiting on you and answering your questions. I have stood in front of their window where they can see me for several minutes before social hour ended and they chose to speak to me. Again, mentioning sick visits, the staff does not tell you it could be hours before seen. Instead they charge your co-pay up front at check in and your held prisoner in the waiting room. Medications are another issue I have recently run into with this office. Routine medications, which are taken every month, cannot be refilled by phone. This means if the doctor only puts 1 month on the refill, which occurred to me last time, of a long term maintenance medication, you then have to pay another co-pay and have another office visit to have a prescription refilled. This in my opinion is a blatant abuse of power to get more money from the patient. Dr. Menocal himself is often friendly and offers a relaxing atmosphere. The visits with the doctor are extremely short, usually lasting less than 2-3 minutes. Not many questions are answered during these visits. I do not know if he is over scheduling, or overworked, but the overall experience is horrible. So much so that the last time I was waiting over two hours I demanded my co-pay be returned and left to go to an urgent care. Dr. Menocal is a kind and caring physician who has dedicated his practice to helping the underserved. He accepts patients with many different types of commercial insurance, but also spends a significant amount of time helping those with Medicaid and those without any insurance. Some reviews posted on yelp are inaccurate in saying that he does not offer certain services, such as prescribing birth control. He offers this service along with many other convenient services, such as an in house laboratory for bloodwork. His staff is helpful and eager to offer assistance in finding specialists willing to accept Medicaid or self pay patients. Overall, Dr. Menocal cares deeply for his patients and goes the extra mile to keep them healthy. I recommend him whole heartedly. read more

Horrible experience, front desk staff is rude, hangs up on patients on the phone, fills out paperwork and prescription incorrectly. The waiting room looks like a third world nation waiting for an exodus, and they can't control their obnoxious offspring. So I went to see him because he spoke Spanish and I felt that I can relay my medical concerns and be completely understook. Whan I got from it was " your life is boring" you need to do other things. In summary, he is a joker and his comments are funny to an extent. He gives the impression that what you're telling him is not relevant or the pateient is exagerating. My husband still goes there because he feels confortable but does think that many times he undermines the symptoms. My mother-in-law does not have insurance so it's cheaper to go there, and she does feel the same way that he does not do a through-out job of examining the symptoms and gives a feeling that he is busy and needs to dash out to the next patient. read more

I chose Julio Menocal as he was closest to my home and accepted my insurance. My first visit (for myself and my teenage son) was not with Dr. Menocal, but with another in the office. It was a good visit and the staff was very kind. They understood that my son has been on mental health medication for a long time now, and that it is a physically addictive mediation. They took a urinalysis from me and from my son. Now this last appointment, my son's second, Dr. Menocal stated that morphine was found in his urine, and proceeded to tell my son that he was a drug addict and that he hoped he "made it" - and how he had this problem with his own son who made it due to prison. My son tried desperately to convince him that he does not take morphine. Dr. Menocal began asking him where he is getting morphine. My son again said he does not take morphine. The doctor proceeded to tell me he would no longer prescribe my son's mental health medication due to morphine showing up. I said I will find another doctor instead -- one who has the training for mental health issues. Lo and behold...when I read the urinalysis results at home...it states "Morphine is in poppy seeds". Are you kidding me? My son eats everything bagels at least three times a day. And this doctor knew this, yet STILL proceeded to call my son a drug addict. He is a terrible doctor. I will never go back to someone who is so demeaning and condescending. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Menocal as a preteen, teenager & adult. He was a new doctor just starting out at the practice I had been to since I was 10 days old. He was young and full of ideas. I was used to the older doctors with their old remedies. So, I was aprehensive. As time went on I came to trust Dr. Menocal. I had been misdiagnosed as a young child, and he was able to assist me in finding a new and correct diagnosis for several problems. When I say that this man is a miracle doctor, I do not say that lightly. After not seeing Dr. Menocal for about 10 years, I was able to book an appointment with him at Menocal Family Practice that same week. I went to see him. I was very nervous. I have been sick for 14 months, and came to Dr. Menocal as my last resort. The minute he walked into the room I was immediately at ease. I told him a few brief issues I was having, and gave him a small amount of history. He examined me for less than 5 minutes before diagnosing my problem. After 14 months of doctors not listening and leaving me suffer, my miracle doctor did it again. I must also add that Dr. Menocal did bring up my weight and ask why I have not had bariatric surgery. If it had been another doctor I may have taken offense or been upset about it, but he was blunt and gentle. He said it's time. He is right. This year long illness has really taken it's toll on me. I need to do something drastic to get back to myself. I can't thank Dr. Menocal and his amazing & friendly staff enough for taking such good care of me! read more

My husband has known Dr. Menocal for over 50 years and he was a friend of his family before immigrating here. He was his valued personal physician for many years and was always a good doctor. However, about 4 yrs. ago he appeared to be undergoing some sort of stress in his life (possibly divorce?) and he started becoming impatient and dismissive with my husband. On the last visit, my husband was called loudly to the receptionist and told he couldn't see the Dr. because he "hadn't paid his last bill", which was a simple billing problem due to Medicare, not a non-payment, but the receptionist made sure the whole waiting room heard it, and my husband was extremely embarrassed. He told the receptionist curtly that he wanted to talk to Dr. Menocal as soon as possible. 30 min. later he was shown in and a nurse was taking his weight when Dr. Menocal literally came running down the hallway and told him to "don't talk to my staff that way", he was very obviously out of control and enraged. My husband was taken aback and asked what he had done to offend him, and Dr. Menocal shouted "Get out!" so we decided it was best to leave, thus terminating their personal and professional relationship after 20 yrs. or more. It is my opinion that Dr. Menocal should not let his personal problems affect the way he runs his medical office, and that if he could treat a FRIEND this way after 50+ yrs., prospective clients should be VERY cautious about using him as a medical doctor. Office was always packed with people, dirty, and noisy, receptionists were untrained, dismissive, and not helpful nor professional. My opinion: spend your money on a better doctor, one that cares about your health and isn't so involved in his own dilemmas.... read more
