Went into the store to purchase a fan. They had one that looks like it might be OK, but I have a very specific space in mind and there was no measurement for the width of the actual fan or its height. The box was closed with two strips of tape and they refused to open it up for me because they said it was their policy that if the box was open, I would have to buy it and could not return it. Neither of them could find the measurements on the box or anywhere else. I asked whether since they worked in a hardware store, they might be able to figure out how to put two more strips of tape back on the box if I ended up not purchasing the item. They clearly did not care at all. Terrible customer service completely unhelpful will never shop here again. read more

Everyone here is always very, very nice. Once, I came in looking for a small square of plywood. When I explained the size of what I was wanting, the man went in the back and just gave me a small wood scrap exactly the right side and told me it was on the house. Today, as I stumbled in from the Mars-like dystopia the wildfires had turned this city into, one of the workers had a big bag of hardcore masks. It had straps I didn't understand. Not only did he show me how it worked, he literally put it on my head for me. Not many people would be that helpful. I was wandering around the UWS trying to find a place that fixes screen windows, with the busted screen in tow, and AJO was the fourth hardware store I hit up. They don't fix screens in store (like stores 1-3) and were about to give me the phone number for a company that does the fixes, but a very kind man explained that it was easy enough for me to re-screen the frame myself. He helped me pick out the perfect materials & tools, and gave a detailed explanation for how to do the work myself. Online inventory obviously does not correctly match what is in the store. Then, once you get to the store, get ready for a rude customer service experience. Dismissive, underhanded and argumentative. Visited AJO after visiting a number of stores trying to find Lysol spray and other cleaners to help deal with the coronavirus and flu. Everyone is out of products or price gouging. Luckily, I was able to find Lysol spray, gloves and bleach. I have been spraying my door knobs nonstop with the spray. The owner also told me they are hoping to get N95 face masks and more Purell wipes and hand sanitizers by the end of this week. They are only taking cash for certain items (signs indicate which ones...). When I asked why- the employee said that in the past after hurricane sandy, customers had returned items and really hurt the business (people are so dishonest!) It's nice to support a family-owned local business! (Update: found last standing Lysol at a CVS- both AJO and CVS stores had it for 9.99!) read more

I have been shopping here for years--they have a custom design department and I have designed a couple of devices (an extra kitchen shelf, a box/shelf to put around the catbox) through them and I'm used to picking up light bulbs and Soda Stream canisters here. I have generally had excellent service until this spring. A few months ago my Soda Stream machine broke and I bought a new machine--one that required a different type of refill canister (pink). This meant that I couldn't use the old kind of canisters (blue) of which I still had two (unused and still sealed)--I would have to switch them out for the new kind. I went to this store (where I'd bought the old canisters) and explained the situation to them--they assured me I could exchange the old canisters as long as they were still sealed. No problem. Thursday I show up with one of the two canisters (they were very heavy, I could really only carry one at a time) and exchange the sealed old blue canister for a new pink canister. I even had a lovely exchange with the person behind the counter about how they like to make their loyal customers happy and I told them how long I'd been shopping there. I would much rather frequent a small local business than a huge chain. The following Monday I show up with the second canister. This particular cashier* point blank WOULD NOT exchange the canister. I tried to tell them this had already been cleared and they kept saying "I can't exchange a blue canister for a pink one." I think they didn't understand that the blue canister was still sealed--you can turn around and sell this blue canister to someone else, it hasn't been opened. And I *tried* to explain that to them but they kept insisting they couldn't do it. This had ALREADY been okayed, and I had ALREADY exchanged one canister. This plus the earlier rudeness about the lightbulb was deeply upsetting. *Who has been rude to me before--I asked them a question once about a lightbulb, whether the one I was buying matched the one I was replacing and they told me "look at it yourself" and refused to answer the question. YOU'RE THE EXPERT. You can read my reviews--I am not someone who tries to take down businesses. I have worked retail myself many times and I understand what kind of work is involved. But now I'm out $15+ because for whatever reason a cashier refused to listen to what a customer was saying, refused to admit they were wrong, that they misunderstood the situation, and felt like throwing their weight around just to feel important. And I'm so frustrated at being treated that way. As I said, I've worked retail. That's not how you treat a 5+ year customer. read more

Outstanding team of people to work with. This winter I decided to tackle a home improvement project and self-contracted. I did many things from replace doors and frame new ones, rebuild walls, add crown molding, re-grout bathrooms etc. Tali, Greg, Isaac and the rest of the team were generous with their time, super friendly and outrageously helpful. I'm new to the neighborhood and have only been in a handful of times, but I'm getting worn down. While one of the employees (a woman) is always courteous, and professional. Several of the staff are always negative and even snooty - even when they don't necessarily know what they're talking about. I'm formerly a professional painter, and I don't need someone using ANY vulgarity or rolling their eyes while I respectfully seek assistance in an area I'm well acquainted with. DO NOT BUY LUMBER FROM THEM. This is the worst experience I have ever had with purchasing lumber. I purchased $300 of wood (simple cuts of plywood, 2x4s, and 4x4s) for a college engineering project. I payed $50 for the labor cost of cutting the wood (not including delivery). One of the large pieces of plywood I asked for came delivered to me 6 inches too wide, so I called and spent about 20 minutes trying to explain to someone on the phone who didn't understand anything about lumber the situation. Then they came to pick up the wood to "recut it" which required me to lug it back down from my apartment to the street. It was returned to me the next day (again left on the street), a full half inch too short! Completely incorrect again! They have just taken it back for a THIRD time and I can only hope that it comes back correct. They had no respect for my schedule when delivering the wood they messed up--the most recent plywood was delivered to me during the one hour I told them I could not be home because "they can not just keep driving back up to my apartment." And, they were incredibly rude to me for being unhappy with their multiple mistakes. I have spent multiple hours dealing with this issue, my wood project is significantly behind schedule, and they didn't even refund me for the cost of the wood. Go to home depot. read more

The Good: Good selection. The people who work there are pretty knowledgeable. It's rarely busy and easy to navigate. The bad: prices and the staff. Some may know what they're talking about, but bad mouthing customers and other employees in front of customers is just not cool. The dude who makes keys is nice, but when asking to make 4 each of two keys, I feel like he looked at me with the "really, THAT many keys" look. The prices are awful, and now I get that you may want to support a local hardware store vs amazon or Home depot, but let's try and make suction cups or hooks not cost $14 each. read more

I went to Ajo Hardware because I needed batteries for two air conditioner remotes. One of the remotes had a tiny screw that was very hard to open in order to put in the batteries. At first I was told that they didn't have the proper screwdriver to open it. Another customer assistant stepped up and found a tool to open the remote and inserted the batteries. His name is Alex. I'm never usually one to write a review but I had such an unpleasant experience at this store I felt it my responsibility to share. I've never been treated so rudely and spoken to in such a sexist manner in my life. I went in to get a piece of wood cut to replace a missing piece of trim. I was informed that my measurements do not make sense and that they would need to speak to the person putting the piece of wood in. I informed them I'm doing this minor repair. The associate refused to cut the piece of wood per my repeated requests so I finally walked out. Apparently it is unfathomable to this employee that a woman who happens to be pregnant would undertake such a small household repair. As I walked out he frantically followed me trying to further explain how my simple measurement does not make sense. I had to tell him to stop following me and stop talking to me. I later went back (simply because this store is across the street from my apartment and convenient). This time sought out a different employee who has assisted me in the past (Alex, who is great). I simply asked if he could cut a piece for me. This time he informed me they could but they would have to order the type of wood because it was not in stock so that's what I had them do. Two weeks later I went in to pick up the wood piece of wood when it was finally ready (the Easter and Passover holiday delayed the wood delivery). This time the owner/manager of the store informed me he remembered me even though he couldn't locate my slip he remembered me because I was the PROBLEM CUSTOMER. He continued on telling me that I had been in and left but realized I was wrong and came back. I informed him the reason I left was the sexist and rude way in which his employee had spoken to me and . He tried to explain how his employee was correct in not helping me because my measurement did not make sense. I was completely taken aback that any store owner/manager would speak in such a way to a customer. I requested they me up so I can get out of this store and never come back. After they finally figured out how to enter the special order wood cost I paid and left. For the record the piece of wood (cut to my requested length) fits perfectly and the project is now complete. Two days later if you can believe it I get a call from the store manager claiming that I owe him for this piece of wood and that he has an open ticket here that needs to be paid. I informed him I paid two days ago and he can speak to the store owner who was there when I was rung up. I'm flabbergasted that anyone would speak to a customer so rudely; I will not be shopping here ever again. Aquarius Hardware one block over on Amsterdam will now be my go to hardware store. I suggest if you like to be treated with respect that you choose not to shop at this Store. read more

Love this store for the occasional hardware need. It's much easier to navigate than Home Depot, and it's also much more convenient of course for those on the UWS. I happen to stumble upon this place while meeting up with a friend on the upper west side, and I was so happy I did. After having a quick lunch, I gathered my things and was about to depart quickly. However my friend frankly asked why the rush? I mentioned my bathroom disaster and how I needed to caulk the surrounding area of the tub because it came undone. I was on my way downtown to go somewhere else but was redirected to this handy little storefront. It was such a pleasant surprise. Not only were the workers wonderful, they pretty much had everything I needed. I didn't need to go to a gigantic store. They even assisted me in what else I would need and how to do it. I totally recommend this place over any larger store if you happen to be in this neighborhood or even if you're not. Whether it be gorilla glue to fix your favorite mug or a small can of paint to fix that hole in the whole made by a picture, this store is helpful. It may be deceiving from the outside but it is great inside. read more
