The Meowhaus is amazing and you should board your cats there! We've been taking our's there for 13 years. The staff is amazing, and the rooms are unusually large and inviting for a boarding facility. For an extra charge they will email you a photo and brief update on how your cat is doing. It's so reassuring!! It makes it not so lonesome for us getting fun photos of cat when we are away. Anya, and her caring staff not only love cats but are experts at caring for them.They have vet techs on staff who know what to look for and what to do if there is an unexpected kitty health issue. We so appreciate that they can do a nail trim when he's there so we don't have to!! Their manager Shanon, is a certified pet nutritionist. She was so helpful when I needed advice on how best to help our 15 lb cat Ozzie loose some weight. Our neighbor took their indoor/outdoor cat there when their wood floors were being refinished. Sam is an adopted stray. He was shy and nervous and he'd never been boarded. They knew exactly how to make him feel comfortable and not so scared about being in a new strange place, and he did just fine. I boarded my cats here back in 2017 for about a week, and everything went well. I left a very positive review and planned to use Meowhaus' services again in the future. Fast forward to last week: I need to go out of town in early October for a wedding and I hope to use Meowhaus again. I make a reservation online, and wait the "72 hours" for a response. No response. I then email them asking for help, stating that I totally get it if they're fully booked - I just need to know so I can try elsewhere. Wait a few more days, no response. I then call and leave a VM, no response. Meowhaus, get back to your customers. That's basic customer service. If I could give 6 stars, I would!! Where do I even begin? From the moment I called on Friday to schedule a grooming session for our outdoor cat, I knew the reason why there were such wonderful reviews for this place!! I could tell straight away that Anya honestly cares!! Our outdoor cat has been in need of a trim & it quickly escalated this weekend where one of her clumps of matted hair was torn off her hind leg in a bush either that or she groomed it off ...I texted Anya with concern about the other matted sections needing attention sooner than our scheduled appointment. She immediately got back with really helpful suggestions & was able to squeeze us in first thing this morning to get Boots a quick shave & brush out. She was just wonderful with our cat & took great care with getting Boots sorted with more really helpful suggestions to help with Boots' skin healing. We love this place. Our cats were immediately exploring their new surroundings. And yes, we will absolutely bring our kitties back whenever we're in Portland. Truly the best, and Anya is lovely, accommodating, knowledgeable, and a cat person at heart. We don't live in Portland, so we're a bit sad that we can't use this spot as our regular kitty hotel. These people truly love and want the best for your cats. The lead at the location we chose, Jill S., was basically our cat whisperer/ kitty camp counselor. Scheduled exploration time and cuddle time were big selling points for us. Spaces are well designed and though our fur bebes were inevitably freaked out by the experience they did receive special care to make it as non-traumatic as possible (curtains, hiding structures, extra treats...). I understand kitties get scared and maybe pee places they shouldn't but i expect clean fresh air for everyone. One litter box in a room requires HVAC considerations; greater than 10 should trigger something to be implemented. read more

I had a last minute emergency where I had to go out of town unfortunately right after my cat got spayed, I saw that Meowhaus had good reviews and I really loved their website/amenities for boarding. I called and got squared away with an appt and thought everything was all good. When I originally made the booking, I needed to drop off early in the morning then plans changed so I attempted to get ahold of Meowhaus to let them know I would be dropping later... unfortunately, I tried to call 4 times throughout the day with no answer and VM was full so I couldn't leave a VM. I also sent an email that I did not get a response to. I ultimately did not feel comfortable leaving my cat somewhere that I could not reach them before the booking even started so I got a last minute reservation somewhere else. read more

I have used Meowhaus twice now. I boarded an eighteen year old cat with them recently. I felt confident he would get good care. Having 'outdoor time' in the office and finches to watch during the day helped to keep him from getting depressed. Staff are kind and very interested in cat wellbeing. First I will preface this review with the fact that I really wanted to like this place more. It looks completely awesome online and I was able to make all my arrangements for my cat to stay out of state and online. I love the idea of the aviary and it does appear to have more space than most boarding places and really is designed for a cat. I wish I could give Meowhaus a better review. However, my cat's stay was not good for her and I feel giving a better review falsely tells someone to expect their cat's stay will go un-hitched. To be fair, my cat has always stayed at home with a house sitter in the past, but being new to the Portland area, and not knowing anyone who could house sit, we decided to board our cat for five days. I probably travel four weeks out of the year. My cat is four years old, has gone on road trips, and she greets all new people that come to our house. (I.e. She's a flexible and socially friendly cat). Anya is a cat person to the bone. When I came to drop my cat off she trash talked dogs while I was there (did I mention we also have a dog?). But something she didn't seem to recognize is the key fact about cats liking privacy. Any cat person should really know and respect this. Their suites do not really offer privacy as they are clear windows in the front and back so the cats constantly see the other cats or whoever is present at the place. When we put her in the room I asked if my cat could have her small kennel without the door left in her suite because she likes to hide and it's a common comfortable place I find her napping in at home. She said sure no problem. And of course I'm a sucker pet owner. I paid for the "extras" while I was away - photo to be sent, fish flake snacks, spa manicure, ect. I felt bad leaving my cat, but I felt pretty comfortable leaving her at the meawhaus when I left for my trip back home. When I returned to pick up my cat her personal kennel was removed from her suite. I was told by Anya, "oh she got really comfortable the first day so I took it out." I was given her food back which the bag was almost completely full as given. I had measured out exactly to how much she gets fed daily (yes I measure) plus an extra days worth in case of flight delays. If its one thing I can count on my cat is eating. She loves to eat. She comes out of the wood work to eat. The fact that she did not eat during her stay obviously shows my cat was uncomfortable. She yowled the entire time I was there picking her up too. I mentioned something to comfort my cat when collecting her to go (ridiculous I know), like "I'm sorry sweetie," and the owner was offended and started to act very defensive about how she put fish flakes on her food every day and loved it, ect. I tried to be polite and just keep it simple saying she's just never been in a boarding house and usually says at home, to which she replied, "Yeah, I leave my cat at home with a house sitter too." Really? Then why are you offended that I'm apologizing to my cat for putting her in a place she's obviously uncomfortable? I also happened to look at her litter box and was appalled that the tiniest amount of cat litter was in the box. I would call it a smear of litter. I know they don't want to be wasteful but what cat wants to piss on a plastic box, because that's basically what the cats must be doing. My cat yowled the entire next two days at home. She kept crawling up on my lap probably every hour on the hour (she's not a cuddly cat...) as if to say please don't ever make me go there again. She has never acted like this in the past when I have traveled. Don't worry, I won't! There are a lot of awesome reviews on yelp for this place, which makes me feel bad for rating this place low. The Princess* loves to go to Meowhaus. LOVES. He gets to stare at the birdies in the aviaries and the staff dotes on him. Seriously dotes - the last time I went to pick him up he was sitting on the reception desk like he freaking owned the place. They have a protocol in place to ensure cats can't get out so there's no worries about that. The kitty suites are spacious enough and one cat at a time is allowed out into the common area to prowl (see above). I like that there is plenty of room for cats to perch in their individual rooms, because, being cats, they like to look down their noses at the rest of us. I kind of worry that the birds in the aviaries get freaked out by predators constantly watching them. It''s hard to describe - there is an aviary on either side of each row of cat suites. The cats are separated from the birds by a tight mesh enclosure that runs the length of each. But who knows, maybe they're thinking "neener neener, y'all felines are trapped, look at us flying around." You get detailed reports of how much your cat has eaten, peed and pooped. It's a little TMI and only reinforced what I already knew: my cat is a pig. Meowhaus books up early for holidays/weekends and it's not the cheapest place in town by a long shot, but I trust them and that's the most important thing to me. My only complaint is that you can't pick up your cat on Sundays or major holidays. It's weird to come back from vacation and know your cat is a few miles away, yet you can't get him. Maybe it's because they only serve members of the feline family; maybe it's that Stacey, the primary human liaison and subject of the "Stacey is Awesome Report," is also an experienced and capable vet tech; or maybe it's because the physical space is both spotless and warm and features handmade kitty name placards on each living area; or maybe it's because Stacey calls Ella her 'jazzy lady'... I'm hooked and so is jazz lady. Even if you are not as discerning a cat person as we both secretly know you are, you'll still see how special this place is the moment you walk in, and perhaps even be moved to write a Yelp review for the first time in...I'd really prefer not to say how many years... Regardless, this place is a class act that deserves the support of the community (yeah, you, closeted cat-lover-man) almost as much as cats deserve to stay there. read more

It is very easy to get an appointment and they respond quickly to emails. The rooms for the cats are spacious and allow a lot of movement. My cat does not tend to like being away from home, but she tolerated her stay very well (I say tolerate because, being a cat, I don't know her exact feelings). Normally when we go out of town, a neighbor checks on our two indoor cats (and we do the same for theirs - a good arrangement). But during our last trip we planned to have an earthquake retrofit, with workers in and out of the house all day and lots of noise. So the kitties needed a vacation of their own. I'm glad we went with Meowhaus. Our cats are somewhere between "outgoing" and "shy," but it seems they adjusted well to their shared suite. We chose to have photos and updates sent a few times, and they appeared relaxed while getting petted by employees (though our girl cat still looked slightly befuddled). They enjoyed their view of the aviary (a nice bonus), and the boy cat liked climbing to the skybox to look at his neighbor. The email updates also mentioned their eating and litterbox habits, which continued normally, showing they weren't too stressed. (Of course you can bring your cat's typical food.) All the employees we met seemed to be cat people, and David (who checked us in) was very helpful. After returning to our house post-Meowhaus, the cats settled back in like nothing had happened. Protip: make sure your kitties are up to date on their vaccinations, so (unlike me) you don't have to scramble to get them a rabies shot the day before your trip! I'm not sure the next time we'll need kitty boarding, but when we do, we'll go back here. read more

I live near Meowhaus and don't ordinarily board my 2 cats, but when one of my regular pet sitters was unable to come, I contacted Meowhaus and Anya said they'd be willing to do home visits. She scheduled a home visit to meet me and the cats, and I felt completely happy that they would be in great hands with her. I appreciated that she spent time getting to know them. Everything went great and when I went to fetch my keys and pay the bill I got to see the inside of the boarding facility - so awesome!!! They are clearly all kind and dedicated and love their kitties. If I ever need to board I will totally go there as well as future home visits as needed! read more

Took my cat to have her first bath at 13! We fought flea season and won, but she needed a bath and I wasn't gonna do it. We booked a session, over the phone they mentioned that nail clipping was a part of the deal- (!!!). They took such good care of my cat! She smells great, and she is super content with the results. Sidenote- the individual spaces for boarded cats are adorable, and built for the various needs that a cat might have. While checking out the spa, I ran into a professional cat snuggler! I'm hesitant to leave this review because other Yelpers are so delighted with Meowhaus. It has also been a chunk of time since leaving my cat in their care. Actually, it has been nearly two years. But I expect my complaints have not become dated. One thing I notice regarding a majority of positive reviews is the spunky, outgoing personality of the cats. My cat, however, is extremely shy and, having been rescued from an abusive home, is fearful of new people, at least initially. So, as you may have guessed, my leading complaint is Anya's style of approach, her having described the technique in jest. She made it her "mission" to force love onto my cat, determined to be pals. But this was not the cat's plan. The cat wanted to be left alone in her cashew, a cushioned kitty shelter. She would hiss when Anya and others pulled her out to encourage playtime. Coincidentally, this is what Anya was doing in our final conversation as my cat tried to leap from her arms. Things went amiss when Anya held her tighter and showered her with unwanted kisses. To be clear, Anya is an emotionally open person, a hugger, someone who is hands-on with people and animals alike. These are good traits to have. I see value in these traits. Joe Biden has these traits. I love Joe Biden. But not every human or feline has this type of personality, myself included (obviously). All that I ask is to keep this in mind when your business relies on such nuance. Another reviewer, Amy S. points toward a different experience. Now, with my rant out of the way, on to other business. My cat got fleas. I want to tread very lightly while explaining this one because, understandably, it is not something Meowhaus wants to see on their Yelp page. However, my cat never had fleas from the time we got her in July 2013 until the time we left her at Meowhaus in November 2014. During this period of ownership, ignorance was in fact bliss. We never bothered with flea collars or the ridiculously priced Advantage/Frontline. None of our neighbors owned animals, and things were going well in what appeared to be a honeymoon phase. Then we left the cat at Meowhaus. Within two weeks, we had a flea infestation. The whole rigamarole soon followed. I sprayed the carpet with chemicals. I bombed the apartment with chemicals. I washed my cat with medicated shampoo (mo' chemicals). I vacuumed and wiped everything down. I purchased new scratching posts, threw out the old ones. Then the fleas returned, and I repeated the whole process. A snag in procedure at Meowhaus is/was the late administering of Advantage. They asked us to purchase a dose and bring it with us. Meowhaus then applied it to my cat after bringing her directly into the hotel unit. The staff member (not Anya) applied it hastily and without necessarily making sure each droplet was hitting the skin. Should other cats have been put through the same procedure, fleas would lay dormant in the carpet then tack onto the next cat. On this same day, another employee was scrubbing the floor with bleach and tending to the daily cleaning. They have a meticulous system of cleaning. It is my deepest expectation that they are equally meticulous with vacuuming and treating the carpets following a stay. But I am still 95% sure that, somehow, the fleas came from Meowhaus. For the next year, we made sure to apply Advantage to our indoor cat. But these last four months, we have decided to skimp. Sure enough, no problem. So it isn't the home environment. All in all, these are well-intentioned people. I visited several other pet hotels in Portland before deciding on Meowhaus. It is by far the most palatial choice with its aviary and sky boxes. When I toured the facility, plenty of cats were enthused while one big fellow would not quit yowling for his mother. Likewise, my cat ended up being awfully despondent. My girlfriend and I have since decided to go on shorter trips and leave the little one on her own for no more than three days at a time. A friend checks up on her periodically, and she seems all the more happy doing things this way. Different strokes for different folks-- or cats, whatever. read more

The staff was very uninformed about cats, & did not make my cat feel safe at all. When i was explaining his medication (he is on prozac) one of the women was in shock that a cat could have anxiety. Anxiety medication is extremely common in cats, so that just shows how ill informed they are. When i went to pick him up, i told them i would pick him up to get him in the carrier as it was obvious he did not trust them at all, but when i was paying they shoved him in the carrier, adding to his stress. On top of this, after paying, I received multiple credit card fraud payments. They obviously do not have a secure cyber space, and are not to be trusted with your cats or your credit card. read more

Meowhaus is wonderful. I've boarded Pennynoodle, my cat, there twice. His first stay was only a few days long, while his second stay was around 2.5 weeks. We spent our entire vacation fretting about Penny, but when we got back, he hardly seemed to notice we'd been gone and apparently was having the time of his life there. He came back healthy and obviously played with. Both times the staff was incredibly accommodating. The facilities are the best I've seen of any boarding house -- tall, spacious rooms for the cats with an aviary to keep them entertained. If you're a true doting owner, you can get extras like pictures and snacks and spa treatments for your pets. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

I brought my 14-year old cat to stay at the Meowhaus for two nights recently while we were in the process of moving from out of state. I've never left him somewhere like this before and he's always been cared for in the comfort of our home. But, I was really glad to find such a great resource for keeping him safe and comfortable for a few days. The facility is clean and well taken care of. The staff is great, especially Sean, who came a bit early on a Sunday to get us checked in, and went out of his way to give us tips on Portland restaurants and neighborhood. He was fantastic. I stopped by the following day to check on my cat, and he seemed surprisingly well adjusted... was chilling on his memory foam perch looking out at the aviary. It was nice that he could look out at other cats too but not interact directly with them. My husband picked up my cat and brought him home and mentioned that the person working said that he (my cat) had been "skittish and grumpy," which left a semi-negative taste in my mouth. I would have preferred a positive review of my critter, esp considering how out of his element this was for him. But, I would board my cat there again, and would recommend it to others. read more

My cat and I owe so much to this place. I just moved here from California, and Anya, the owner, was accommodating in every way during the several weeks that my cat had to be in cat boarding. Anya was willing to meet me after hours to check Chicken, my cat, in. Chicken HATED being boarded at first, but after a few days she really settled in. Anya was very compassionate with Chicken when she was upset and mad about being in boarding. Eventually Chicken calmed down and ended up being comfortable in the space and with all of the staff. I really didn't want to board Chicken, but I had to, and I'm so grateful that I was able to board her here. The entire staff genuinely cares about the animals they serve. Anya texted me updates on how Chicken was doing, sent a picture, and even gave Chicken a little mouse toy as a gift when we picked her up. I can't recommend them enough. read more

Meowhaus is our #1 choice for boarding our fur-child. He loves it here! Everytime we pick him up, he prances around, tail up and super happy. I cannot recommend and praise Anya enough for doing a great job pet sitting for my 16 year old kitty, Samson. She was terrific, incredibly thorough, and flexible. Samson has recently gone blind, has two medications he must take, one involving creating a gross wet food slurry with powder meds in it (eeew!), and is a bit skittish. We were naturally very nervous about leaving town for a couple of days since he lost his eyesight and because of his medication needs. Boarding him was out of the question but we couldn't ask friends to watch him. Cue Anya! From the start she was super on point, asking what his needs were, where things are located, his general behavior, etc. She's clearly very knowledgeable given her lengthy experience in the field, she's easygoing, friendly and trustworthy. She was great about giving updates and keeping us in the loop while we were gone. This place is AMAZING. We have two older cats who get really nervous and anxious in new settings (as do many cats). My partner had seen this place many times and decided to give it a try while we were out of town for a few days. Anya was amazing and really knows cats. The layout is superb. Each cat get its own room (and if they are a pair they get to stay together) and each room has a window, a perch high up, scratch pad. Each window had a view of the bird aviary for the cats to look at. They also got turns to wander around the place and got a lot of one on one time with Anya. Anya really knows cats and really understood each cat, especially our cats and really treated them all with respect and loved each one. The cats seemed as if they enjoyed their stay, and I think with Anya's skill and love of the cats, made it easier for the cats to adjust and have fun! The facility was clean and very well kept. It was amazing and highly recommend this cat boarding place. I really can't say enough how great Anya was with our cats and how pleased we are with the service! What a fabulous place to board your precious feline baby!!! I normally have a friend or neighbor care for my kitty when I'm away but that wasn't an option this time. I googled boarding places near me and discovered Meowhaus. Not only was it close to PDX but it sounded like a wonderful alternative. As most pet owners normally feel, I was anxious about leaving my loved one in a new environment but Meowhaus proved to be a fabulous choice!!!! The staff is so attentive and responsible. They responded to my emails immediately and relieved my anxiety about how my kitty was doing with detailed information. When I picked up my cat, I was given a daily log of his eating, drinking and bathroom behavior!!!! And the price is right!!! Speaking as an over-protective pet parent, it's not often that I can leave my cats at a boarding hotel without feeling some pangs of worry (and guilt) while on vacation. I used Meow Haus to board my kittens and transport them to the airport. What a wonderful experience. When the kittens were delivered to Meow Haus, documents were reviewed, crate and dishes were checked for appropriateness, and the kittens were treated as if they were their personal family members. The staff went out of their way to make sure all was in order prior to the flight. Dave even re-booked a flight for me when my kitten's flight was cancelled, and he was on top of every detail every step of the way. This is the place to take your fluff ball. We had tried a handful of cat hotel services before we found this establishment. If you are shopping around, look no further. The staff here love cats and it shows in their care. They can accommodate your felines special needs and they earnestly take an interest in each visitor. You can put your cat in their own private room with 24/7 entertainment in the form of chittering chatty little birds that live there! It's such a terrific idea. When you bring in your pet they will have you fill out a questionnaire of sorts to make sure they know your pet's needs. They take it as seriously as they do the upkeep of the facility. This place is so clean yet homey at the same time. Sure you can try your luck with a place that is a tiny bit cheaper as we had in the past, but why cut a corner like that? It's worth it to pay a little extra in my opinion to give your cat the attention he or she deserves while one is away. Meowhaus is the cat's pajamas. read more

What a wonderful facility! My partner and I were refinishing our floors and needed a place for our cat to stay for 18 days. We found Meowhaus and were nervous because our 15 year old kitty can be temperamental and has never been boarded before. He was in good hands; both Anya and David are extremely caring, sincere, and understanding care-takers. I visited daily since I was in town and they were always welcoming and friendly (and understanding of our kitty's finicky needs). The rooms are cozy and clean, the aviary is a great perk, and the price is very reasonable. The kitties are very well taken care of and we would definitely use their services again! read more

I've taken my long hair kitty Sasquatch in a few times now to be groomed. He has very long fur that mats easily. Anya has always done such an amazing job with him and truly has a love for cats. A added bonus is they are very responsibly priced. read more
