I had a great experience at Merced Smog earlier today. Let me start by saying that I'm very picky. The first thing I noticed is that the business is exceptionally clean. The people were very friendly and took care of me quickly and professionally. It took no more than 15 minutes to smog my 2001 BMW Z3. I came here to get my dad's car smogged while he was in the hospital. I had three children under the age of 3 years old with me. It had been an extremely stressful day and I was not looking forward to what I thought was going to be a big hassle. I went into Merced Smog Center and was out within ten minutes. I live outside of Merced and found them in the phonebook along w/ a $10 yellowpage coupon. As I was headed there to get my truck smogged, it actuall started cutting out just outsid of town. I was going to turn around and head for home but decided to go for it since it was still running but my "service engine" light came on. When I pulled up, I was greeted by one of the owners. He could tell I was upset and I told him what had happened. He told me they would hook it up to their computer and see what obd codes were showing up. He told me that because of the code, it could not be smogged but was very helpful in explaining the issues and refered me to a shop just down the street. He would not accept any reimbursment from me for the use of his equipment or the time he took looking under my hood! My truck is in the shop now but soon as it's fixed, I'm giving my them my business. Very kind and compassionate! read more

I greatly appreciate their punctuality. I arrived ten minutes before they opened and there were a couple folks in line. They opened the doors right at 8 and they were quick at getting all the information from their customers. I was second in line and had my smog check done by 820! Merced Smog Center has done the smog check for my car (2004 Toyota) every year since it began requiring an annual, and the last biannual before that. This review is based on all of those experiences. Obviously, everyone's vehicle is different. Mine passes. I don't think I would fault them, if it didn't. The customer service is always pretty good-- polite, efficient, and appropriately friendly. The waiting room is clean, temperate, and comfortable, with plenty of chairs so you're not forced to sit right next to someone, even when there are 4 or 5 other people waiting. There is a TV for those who are interested, but it's not so loud that it interrupts the thoughts of those of us who aren't. Turnover is speedy, and while I hate the sound of my engine screaming during the test, I always feel my car is in good hands. You can get your tags in house, which is a great relief for procrastinators like me who always end up renewing after the deadline. There is a fee $15-$25, but worth it in my opinion. I have no idea if their prices are higher or lower than their competition. My experience with Merced Smog Center has been so positive each time, that I don't bother checking. read more

I have been taking my automobiles here for years. This morning I needed to get my VW Eurovan smogged and was told that because it had an aftermarket radio they could not do it because it could mess up their computer (according to a California State Bulletin?). I explained that the radio/stereo was original with the car, that I was he orignial owner and that they have successfully smogged the car on three previous occasions. The technician refused to smog the car and suggested I get the radio diconnected before having it smogged. I could then to get the radio reconnected. I took the vehicle to a competitor and had my smog certificate within 30 minutes. Their competitor will get all of my future business.. It appears that the Merced Smog Center does not want any business from VW owners. read more
