Amazing experience for my first root canal! Both Dr. Merchants were so experienced and I trust them so much. The numbing needle did not hurt at all- i barely felt it! She knew exactly the right spot to inject to make me feel comfortable and pain free. She also helped me with a TMJ massage, which felt sooo good! She is also a great listener and very patient. I felt heard, understood, and cared for. The root canal experience was very smooth, efficient, and quick. Dr. Merchant made sure I was okay and I appreciated him giving me updates on what he was doing from time to time. He was very confident and I can immediately tell i'm in great hands. Also, their gentle wave makes me feel more reassured everything is all cleaned out too. If I am needing another root canal, I'm for sure coming back here no matter how far it is from where I am (i'm out of town). Was given sedation without any discussion prior to the procedures. Was not told that two treatments would be needed either. Also, rates are very high compared to other endodontics and be prepared to pay out of pocket for special x-rays that are typically not covered by most insurance. read more

I never thought I'd be recommending an endodontic office but here we are. I had horrible pain from an abscess and was completely scared about the prospect of a root canal. But my dentist basically said I had to do it. So I went in, saw Dr. Steve Merchant and the lovely staff, and immediately felt comfortable. They took great care of me and I was out in a few hours and a whole lot less pain. I also interacted with Dr. Kim Merchant who was equally professional and knowledgeable. I had not been able to lay down for 3-4 days but tonight I'm pain free and remarkable comfortable. They walk you through the procedure and it made all the difference in the world. I was an Endodontist. This is the Endodontics Office in San Diego County that I go to for oral pain. I have gone twice for tooth related pain. In both cases, I did not need root canal treatment. On the last visit, I was first examined by Steve's partner and wife Kim Merchant. The three of us went to the same Endodontics Dental Specialty Clinic residency at the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital. As a matter of fact I donated time there and lectured to them a couple of times. BTW, it was the most sought after Endodontics residency program in the country. We were paid to learn and care for eligible veterans. An incredible learning experience working with medically compromised veterans while getting training and education from top experts. So my point is that Dr Kim Merchant can help you with hard to diagnose pain issues. When your general dentist says "I don't see anything on the X-Ray, your pain will go away," if it doesn't go away see Dr Kim Merchant for a second opinion. Meanwhile, Dr. Steve Merchant will only offer root canal treatment if it is needed and it will offer a predictable successful result. He uses high magnification for treatment. The office has cone beam computered tomography aka CT radiography for analysis of tooth, bone, and adjacent anatomy in three dimemsions. An important diagnostic aid. Do yourself a favor and get a second opinion at Merchant Endodontics before you have your tooth pulled. Many teeth that general dentists recommend for extraction are savable. Maybe a general dentist did the root canal treatment for you and it still bothers you. Usually they missed a canal they were not able to locate without a microscope. Get a second opinion here. Often retreating the tooth, finding another canal, or cleaning the canals all of the way to the end of the root will resolve the problem. read more

This is a long overdue review! Dr. Merchant has done 2 of my root canals and did such an awesome job making sure I knew what was happening and what he was going to do. He made me feel comfortable and I never for one minute doubted my care. One root canal he did was a retreat from one that I had done 15+ years ago in Idaho. An infection happened and a root was missed. When I went to Dr Merchant for the retreat, I knew right away I was in good hands. He also called me to see how I was doing after the procedure. I have seen maybe 20 or more dentists in my life. To be exact Steven is a Endodontics specialist. I have seen 3 of them before. Usually every single dentist tries to freeze my tooth and takes 6-8 shots. He used 2 strategic shots then a shot down the center of this tooth (I think). Froze solid. They ensure to clean the tooth completely on a root canal and are very careful. Extremely nice and great super fantastic staff. The best dentist ever!. I had an emergency and he got me in right away. My 9 year old son broke his tooth in half. Dr Merchant opened his office for an emergency procedure to help my son. His office staff was amazing and I watched my son go from pure pain to happiness. He shaped a new front tooth and I could see my son gain back his confidence. They were great to work with. During this lockdown I thought there would be no chance of fixing his tooth. My experiences are similar to Stephanie G. below. I have also had more than my share of dental work. This past winter I had 2 teeth that became painful and needed root canals, and a third that had previously ached and was now dead and needed one as well. Dr Merchant saw me on short notice for all of them. He was kind, detail oriented, had an excellent chairside manner, and has a great staff too. All 3 root canals were painless and successful. Unfortunately, despite biannual checkups and daily brushing & flossing, I tend to get decay that moves fast (I swear it's mostly not my fault lol). One more thing: Dr Merchant is one of the relatively few dentists (especially endodontists) in the area who accept Tricare insurance. (including my general dentist who doesn't, but I understand since Tricare is known to have some of the lowest reimbursement rates and dentists have to make a living). This saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you, Dr Merchant, for your indirect support of our military and our country for that decision to accept it!!!! (I can't help but feel disappointed when so many doctors and dentists don't accept it and almost feel like it's unpatriotic, but I digress). read more
