I am very grateful for Dr. Merchant's help. I was told I needed a root canal by a dentist, but Dr. Merchant explained that because I am missing three teeth, I am putting too much strain on the others when I chew. I was referred to Dr. Merchant by my regular dentist. I had a new crown but after several months was still experiencing some pain and x-rays did not definitely indicate a root canal was needed. Over several weeks Dr. Merchant performed many tests multiple times until we were both satisfied that the root canal was indeed needed. As I had never had a root canal before I was worried that it would be a painful procedure - it was not. I was also worried about my new (and expensive) crown - it was saved. Dr. Merchant explained each step to me and helped me understand exactly what he was doing and why. I especially like the fact that he took his time to make sure the procedure was actually needed. I would just like to say that the staff at Dr. Merchant's office are as courteous as anyone could hope for. I unfortunately had an infection above an old root canal that was speading without my knowledge. My dentist suggested that I go to his Endodontist but after some research I decided to go to Dr. Merchant. I am very glad that I did. I was referred to an oral surgeon for an implant after my prior root canal failed. The oral surgeon sent me to Dr. Merchant because he thought it could be saved and that Dr. Merchant was the best in San Diego for root canals. After going to several dentists, having botched work performed and then misdiagnoses on what the actual problem was, Dr. Merchant was able to take a CAT scan and identify the ACTUAL problem and corrected it all after 2 small visits!! Several years ago I had a root canal done by this office. I was very pleased at that time with the efficiency of the electronic office, that all parts of checking in were as if seamless and easy, non-cumbersome. I found all personnel to be top class in both their humanity and effectiveness. There was no drag in any aspect to their operations from files to personnel, which aside from the dentistry was very pleasing. Their efficiency as if seemed to allow them to be a very caring bunch. I remembered it, and felt very good about them as a business in my community. I also felt confident in the work done in an expert way with the best equipment and expertise. This month, I had a dentist in another town inform me I needed a root canal and two crowns. Remembering my earlier experience in Dr. Merchant's office, I set an appointment with Dr. Merchant to see if he agreed with this dental plan, and did he also agree I may need a root canal. This top notch Endodontist informed me that he couldn't agree with the dental plan, didn't think I would need a root canal and two crowns. He requested I see another dentist he trusted for a second dentist opinion of my dental treatment plan I will need. I did, and found that like Dr. Merchant had found, I did not need a root canal nor two crowns, but rather just a good dentist willing to do the necessary work. I can sincerely recommend this office for root canal work as I know for a fact that they will not do one if it is not needed. Not only is this good dental practice, yet also good business integrity. Just a bit annoyed, initially I had high regards for this Endodontists. My dentist sent me to him to look at an X-ray that looked like there might be something up with my tooth. He did one of his 3D x-rays and checked my tooth and said it was fine. I got to keep my teeth which was great. This was 2013 and the X-rays afterwards from my dentist has been fine each year. What is annoying me is that his office keeps calling every year about my teeth like they are waiting for something to go wrong, telling me to come in for a scan when my X-rays are fine. I dread going to the dentist and going for a root canal even made my dread worse and increased my anxiety but the pain left me no choice to search out an endodontist !!! My last experience with a root canal done by another dentist, was horrible not only did I have to go back three times an hour each time! Then after a year my root canal developed an abscess and he had to go back and do another procedure to fix it and still that tooth has issues. The bright side to this story is that I decided to ask my fabulous dentist for a referral after he told me I needed another root canal and he recommended Dr. Steve Merchant in Carlsbad and wow what a difference. I was referred to Dr. Merchant from my dentist who at the time was out of town. I was in excruciating pain and in desperate need of a Dentist to perform a root canal after hours. It was an emergency situation. I contacted Dr. Merchant after hours and he took my call and left his son's football game to come to my aid. After a quick X-ray he told me I needed a root canal and he took care of it right then and there on his own. He did a fantastic job. He immediately relieved my pain and performed a solo root canal in less than 45 minutes. I felt absolutely nothing and his bedside manner was excellent. He was caring and concerned, constantly making sure that I was good. HE IS A PRO. One important note: I have never written a review for any reason before today. He did such a great job that I felt obligated to let people know. He is fantastic at what he does and I would recommend him to anyone. I was referred to Dr. Merchant after my dentist of 30 years was unable to get me into their office for an emergency appt. I was in severe and intolerable pain. I was overwhelmed and angry that my dentist could not see me, even after I explained my symptoms. I called Dr. Merchant's office and his staff did not hesitate to advise Dr. Merchant of my condition. He personally called me back immediately and asked me several questions regarding my tooth pain. Before I could finish describing my condition, he told me to come into his office. I explained to him that I lived over 2 hours away. He told me to come first thing in the morning so he could see me. He gave me suggestions on how to temporarily relieve the pain. He assured me that there was no need for me to continue being in pain and he would take care of me. When I awoke, I drove for 2 hours to see Dr. Merchant. I was greeted as soon as I walked into his office. His staff treated me as if I had been a patient there for years. They took me straight back to see Dr. Merchant. He was extremely kind, professional, and genuine. I felt so comfortable and at ease from the moment I sat down in the examining chair. He completed a root canal and the pain was instantly gone. I felt great before I left his office. I would drive 8 hours in the event I had to have another procedure completed. I would highly recommend Dr. Merchant to anyone.
