My husband and I are local Carlsbad residents. We had run across this store browsing the other day and thought that it had very cute items. We found a floor rug that we liked, but wanted to take measurements to make sure it would fit in our space. We returned to the store to purchase the item, but the store was closed. I am giving two stars instead of one, since the hours of operation are correct on Yelp, however they are incorrect on the actual store website, as well as Google Maps (stated hours currently say they are open until 7:00 PM on Saturday, we arrived a little after 6:00 PM). The individual working at the store was rather dismissive to us when we pointed out that the hours were incorrect on their website. Times are tough for a lot of retail right now; seems odd they did not appear to want our business. read more

My mom and I have browsed this shop before. We recently went to the store with the intent of purchasing an item we had seen several times. A woman came up to us while we were looking at the item and my mom simply stated that she has seen this item cheaper on QVC. The woman started a rant about how people are too lazy to go into stores and really shop and that now any idiot can sit on a couch in pajamas and shop at home. I love this cute little gift shop in downtown Carlsbad. They have your assortment of mermaids and beach house decor and gifts but the best part is the cute clothes. Walking into Mermaids in the Village of Carlsbad last week was a delightful experience. We were just strolling around, my daughters and I, and the well-lit store beckoned. So we entered. Clean, interesting, organized and full of sweet treasures and cool clothing, we became entranced as the Siren of the store sang sweet songs of sales in the back. The clothing is soft, flowing, simple, high quality and priced accordingly. My girls tried on random tops and slippers near the mirrored fitting rooms as I pawed through the 40% off rack. I found something I loved, put it on, got compliments from the store clerk and purchased it after sharing and talking easily with her. We will be going back! read more

Right from the start, you'll love the vibe of this store. Everything in here is beach inspired and cute. From non-fussy clothing to classic wooden signs with memorable quotes, this store has it all. As a bonus, I found a chambray shirt that I could wear as a dress. The material was so soft and light, I knew I had to have it. At 60% off, it was an absolute no-brainer. I did ask the woman in the store for a belt to complete the look and her opinion of my outfit. She was so kind that she told me to keep the belt because the outfit worked so well! Today was my first time walking into this store. I have lived in CA all my life and come to Carlsbad at least once a week for either legoland, shops or beach. Our family decided to head to the beach today for some fresh air, and after eating a cute hamburger place my 3 boys and husband were so nice to let me walk around the shops. First thing I noticed about this cute shop was how wonderful it smelt! I am OCD and very allergic to perfumes or strong fragrances, and this store had such a clean and great smell. Greeted by some fragrances hand sanitizer I then noticed how amazingly soft all their clothes are. Everything is color coded and I was finally in "my store"...after 38 years I have never really liked just one store, but this store just had me hooked in! This will bey new shop and I told my husband after I had been in there...I have to come back...often. the lady at the counter was very sweet and I appreciated her kindness. Loves my experienced! WHY.. MERMAIDS ???...You sold me inferior merchandise and REFUSED to refund my $$ when I returned it.. Then, I find that the merchandise that I bought (already inferior) was VERY OVER PRICED....(approx. 20%) BUYER BEWARE....the typical "tourist trap" that we all try to avoid is alive and operating in Carlsbad. Just walking into this store makes me smile. They have a wide variety of merchandise and I never walk out empty handed. Sure, some of the items cost a little more than other stores in the area, but the quality and originality are worth it. The clothes are well made, wash well and are great for travel. The staff treat you like family and will spend time with you as well as give you great suggestions if you can't make a decision on something. We stopped in this wonderful gift shop after eating lunch in the same center. They have a very good assortment of "beachy", ocean-themed items, plus clothing, jewelry, and other items. We thoroughly enjoyed going through the store and looking at the selection. I bought two dresses, a blouse and several other items for our daughter, as well as a print with a beautiful saying for a friend. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The vast majority of the items are reasonably priced, with nothing outrageous in my view. We will definitely return when we are in Carlsbad again. read more

Although they have a beautiful store with wonderful items and clothes, the woman working there (dark blond shoulder length hair) was incredibly rude. The first time I bought something an item didn't fit. I brought it back with my receipt. I was told only exchanges no returns. I did not see this policy posted anywhere which was annoying. So I took my store credit and she gave me a coupon for 10% off my next visit. I came in on my next visit and put my item and the coupon on the counter and informed her of the coupon. After she rang up my item, it didn't appear that she took the discount. I asked her and she said she didn't see it - interesting because it was right there on the counter. She said I could use it on my next visit. Never did she apologize and say she could re-ring it - just that I should come back. This felt lazy and not customer focused at all. I was walking out and realized that I flet like both times I brought something back, their solution was always for me to come back, rather than fix it at that time. I decided that I didn't want to shop there again, so I turned back and asked if she could re-ring the item with the discount because I had no intention of coming back. Instead of apologizing and trying to get my business back, she huffed as she had to re-ring the item (about a 2 minute process, not nearly as challenging a process as she made it out to be). She never said sorry; never thanked me, never looked me in the eye. I am a local resident with the capacity to be a repeat customer vs. their tourists who make single-stop purchases. I hope this woman is not the owner because the lack of customer care was appalling. I have told many people of my experiences and have told them not to shop there. I have bought many items in other local shops in downtown Carlsbad and they all treated me with utmost respect. Mermaids was incredibly disappointing and they have permanently lost my business. read more

My first yelp review ever but felt it worthy to share. I am an Event Coordinator so I love stores like Mermaids and have always been treated well until now. I bought a pair of pants there and within weeks started noticing little holes in the bum of the pants which soon it spread to 15. I took it back hoping they would stand by their merchandise. I spoke with their manager and she said the owner is very strict and would not do an exchange and was pretty rude. I walked over to their new retail outlet and spoke with the sales associate there and asked her to take a photo of it and send it to the owner as I felt she would want to know. While I was there the manager called over there to tell her about me. Fortunately the sales woman was kind enough to take a photo and send it to the owner. As an owner of a business I would want to know if someone had received inferior product from me. I would hope their manager would feel the same. As a Carlsbad local I refer clients and people there all the time, will think twice now before doing so. read more
