I didn't even know gluten would even be in toothpaste. After my cleaning I met with Merrily, and we discussed an issue I'm having with a molar. I live in Brooklyn now but I needed a new retainer and Jim was ON IT, acting as a patient's advocate and coordinating with the lab for the retainers as well as with my new dentist in Brooklyn. Thanks to Jim I'm having a new retainer mailed straight to my apartment in Brooklyn after he asked my dentist here if they could re-scan my teeth as a professional courtesy, which they did for free. I'm not sure I've ever left a review before but wish I had read some before going here... I went in to have amalgam fillings replaced. They wrote up a plan and I had several scheduled visits. Here is a copy of the email I sent them ten days ago (no reply, not even a simple apology): I want to put in writing my reasons for cancelling my upcoming crown appointment. It's, of course, a disappointment that my tongue has remained somewhat numb. I do believe that could have happened to anyone (although I wish it would have been addressed immediately rather than being told "it happens" and letting it go unaddressed for longer than necessary). I didn't fully understand why I wasn't prescribe the medrol pack immediately but rather suggested I see an oral surgeon for that. Regardless, I was able to get it a few days later from a dentist relative and perhaps that has helped. It has improved somewhat over time and I hope that it will one day be back to 100%. The second reason I will not be coming back is because of how I was treated by the hygienist. My final visit to have my bite slightly adjusted from the most recent fillings was so unpleasant...and all due to the hygienist. He was incredibly unkind. I said that I was having issues with getting floss in between my back teeth. Four times he aggressively forced the floss in and said it went in fine (I tasted blood immediately...and I never bleed when flossing). I told him that was hurting every time and he just continued. Then he said I just needed to floss more. I floss everyday (sometimes twice) and have never had an issue. Thankfully, Dr. Sandford stepped in, saw the issue and adjusted it satisfactorily. This sounds like something I could have just misread but his tone was so unprofessional and unlike any I've encountered before. Perhaps he was having a bad day, or maybe I was inconveniencing him. I have never had a hygienist treat me that way...they've always been kind and treated me as if they take my concerns seriously. I left feeling pretty rotten about the experience. I say all this just to give you feedback. It's possible you've lost other clients for similar reasons or you may in the future. Kindness goes a long way! And everyone else in your office is so kind...it's a shame to have one person have such a negative impact. read more

Check your vibe early and often. I've was very excited by all I have read about biological dentistry so was willing to make a long drive and wait a couple of months to get my exam completed. I called today to attempt to schedule the work. I was told that they would not being seeing me because they don't like my personality. I searched my memory for anything unusual about the exam and remembered it to be uneventful. I said, "I am confused. Did I say or do something to upset somebody?" Mary said, "No. We just don't like your personality. [The dentist] didn't want me to tell you that's why, but that's why. You have a negativity you carry with you. It's your vibe." She said something else about my children I didn't quite catch. I wish I would have known this sooner because the state of my teeth is declining rapidly and I am in quite a bit of pain. I really would have benefited from them telling me after the first visit so I could have my needs addressed sooner instead of waiting. So yeah, check your vibe early and often. We came here in hopes of helping my son with his sleep-disordered breathing since that is something they say they specialize in. We were very hopeful and eager to get started. The Alf appliance is what we were promised to correct his issue. We had to pay upfront to cover all his Xrays, visits, and the Alf appliance. The appliance was the bulk of the very high cost. The assistants working with my son were not knowledgeable and definitely not patient. I would often leave there crying because they were so rude to my son. I put up with it because I wanted him better. When they say they will treat you like family, I am sad to say that is further from the truth. After one of our visits, Dr. Sandford's husband (he works at the office) said they couldn't help us and gave us a referral to an orthodontist. That was it. No money back for the appliance we paid for and never got. The worst part was that we lost 1 1/2 years of my son not getting better. Soon after, I went to an orthodontist recommended by a dentist I know, and by the second visit, they had his appliances in with no issue and less than half the money. Please do not take your child here for sleep disorder breathing. It makes me so sad that people pretend to be caring, but instead are cold and money-hungry. read more

I was referred to Dr Merrily Sanford via my sister. I have been focusing on going to doctors and dentists that truly understand that 85% of diseases comes from our mouth and are truly into helping the patients be healthy not just a burn and turn teeth cleaning. My first visit, was impressive. Dr Sanfords staff took many many xrays of my mouth and entire facial area. Then Dr Sanford spent at least 45 min going over my x rays. She showed me that my jaw on my right side was out of place and perhaps it is what is causing my headaches. She then showed me that I have a deviated septum in my nose. And that is why I am Not sleeping so well. Those two discoveries were worth the visit. Then I came back another day for the cleaning. Malissa - was my hygienist, she was incredible. She took her time, she used tools I had never seen, one focused on taking all bacteria out of my mouth. Overall, I can say. I am very impressed. I highly recommend. The Appointment I had was in August of 2012... I only have gone to them for a checkup and xrays. They seem very professional and friendly. My problem is I felt like they may be looking to get their money. I didn't have a cavity in my back wisdom tooth and they wanted to pull it because it was at the gumline instead of above. That didn't sound right to me. I never had a problem with the tooth. We went there because they are one of the fluoride free dentists in the Austin area and they had an online coupon. Update 5/4/15 - Just came back from another dentist appointment almost 3 years later. My experience was much better. They said I have 3 cavities that need filling instead of the 10 that Merrily Sanford told me of. And there was no mention of that tooth that Merrily Sanford wanted to yank. read more

I hate to review someone I've never done business with and if I could give 2.5 stars I would, for that same reason. My review is based on their customer service (or lack thereof) in trying to get an appointment and get a quote on the cost and find out about insurance. First off on her website it has a link to click for appointments, but unfortunately it takes you to a 3rd party website and just to the general homepage; not a page specific to her office. To add insult to injury, when I searched for her on that site, she didn't come up! I searched by name (and yes; checked the spelling), but also location and phone and couldn't find her. Strike 2, I sent an email asking what insurance they accepted since I couldn't find that anywhere on the website and also to ask about appointment times and out of pocket expense. I got no response. Strike 3, after waiting almost 3 weeks from the time I sent my first email, I emailed again. Yes, I could have called but being a busy individual who's free time is often before or after business hours, I appreciate being able to send emails when it works for me and the receiver being able to respond when it works for them; much more efficient than phone tag or suffering though business voicemail hierarchy. It's now been 2 weeks since the 2nd email was sent and you guessed it; no response. Now I know in my business that if all of those things I described were happening . . . a) I'd get fired b) we'd be losing customers left and right Now I was attracted to this dentist because like her, I am anti-fluoride, and I get that means she's probably an ex-hippie and maybe email and computers aren't her office's strong suit, but she still has a business to run and it is 2016, so probably a good time to review the IT staff's performance and get a receptionist who isn't on AOL or dial-up and can respond to emails quickly. I must say, I love Dr. Sandford and have been seeing her for over 6 years. The good with the bad over the 6 years, but all for good reasons. Dr. Sandford about 2 to 3 years ago had two separate health problems which caused her to have two different dentists filling in for her which could have been some of the quality issues going on. I must say Dr. Sandford is back 100% full time and is better than ever. In fact she will be replacing a crown that was done by one of her fill in dentists when she was out ill just becuase she didn't like how it looked and felt in my mouth. This is of course being done all for zero cost to me! They have also had a turnover in hygienists. The new person on staff just cleaned my teeth this week. Very friendly, caring and through. If you are looking for a caring knowledgeable dentist who specializes in biological dentistry, Dr. Sandford is your dentist! Also a plus, she spares no expense on having the very latest equipment on hand that is always the newest technology, this has allowed her over the years to do many different dental procedures with very little if no pain. Normally just have my teeth cleaned but when advised that one tooth required a crown and it would cost quite a bit (as crowns usually do), I got a second opinion and second quote. Dr Sandford doesn't price match and so I had it done by a specialist who also had in-house crown production. Saved several hundred dollars. Well, just received a registered hand written letter (no kidding) from Dr Sandford that said since I had my crown done elsewhere, I'm no longer welcome to get my teeth cleaned at her practice. Fair enough. I loved Merrily Sandford, I received the most comprehensive and detailed exam (as well as insurance "tutorial" ) that I have ever had in my life.
