I had all four shocks replaced on my 99 Ford Explorer. Labor only, I already had the shocks in my possession. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. I initiated contacted via the email listed on Angie's List. The response time could have been much better. I'd recommend not listing an email address as a contact if it's not the preferred method of contact for the business. That aside, I was given a very reasonable estimate for the labor (the Ford dealership wanted twice the amount and wanted to charge me for a front end alignment which I didn't need). I dropped it off Friday and was told it would be done Saturday. Got a call later that Friday saying it was done. I picked it up Saturday anyway because I couldn't get a ride in time. When I picked it up, they informed me that they lubed my spare tire wench because it was very rusty which made it difficult to lower the spare. They could've just left it as it or charged me something else but didn't. They also let me know that my lower ball joints were in bad shape. They quoted me about $1100 for that job. Normally, I'd think the shop was trying to scam me but I actually knew about this ahead of time and was happy they didn't try to throw in unnecessary work to charge me for. I plan on taking it back for the ball joints. They were pretty easy to talk to. I dealt with Larry. He wasn't pushy at all and gave me all my options for the job they recommended. read more

This place used to be a great place to take your car for service. The staff were honest and they did good mechanical work for a fair price. This all has changed in the past two years as Merv went commercial. Now instead of listening to the customer, your input is just discounted. Instead of taking the time to fix your car right, they hurry it in and out, often returning it to you in the same condition you brough it in. This was my experience with two cars I took there, one last year, and one recently, both times they charged me for unnecessary hardware/labor. One repair was related to stuck break calipers, and one related to a check engine light. On both occasions, I had to take the car and finish the repair work elsewhere. I had been taking our family cars there for almost 15 years now but I won't do it anymore. Time for me to find another "hole in the wall" shop. read more

I had a fantastic experience at Merv's. I called on a Monday asking if I could bring in a used car I was considering buying to have a mechanic check it out and let me know if he thought there was anything wrong with it. They said to come by the next day, which I did. Merv came out and we went for a test ride together, during which time he carefully checked the electronics, saw how the car drove, and otherwise checked out the car. I do not know much about cars, so I asked him to explain what he was looking for and he happily talked me through his thought process and investigation. When we got back to the shop, he raised the car and thoroughly inspected under the hood, under the car, and the body. The car was repainted, and he brought over his paint expert to evaluate the quality of the repainting and otherwise give me a fair assessment of the status of my car. Merv and his paint guy both patiently showed me around the vehicle, explained what they were looking for and what they found, and were happy to answer all of my questions. When he finished an hour long inspection, I took out my wallet to pay and he told me it was free of charge! I insisted that I do not live close to there and would therefore not be able to bring my business back, and he still refused payment. He gave me an easily $100+ inspection and would not accept my money. Great service, honest, professional, could not recommend more strongly. read more

I was informed after paying for a full inspection that I needed my sway bar and rear brakes replaced. After speaking with two other shops, I was informed both were fine. My boyfriend, Drew suggested this place when I was getting quoted expensive prices to fix my Mazda Tribute 2005 at Tire Auto in Centreville. I failed the state inspection for the brake hose having a hole. Francis was very honest and explained what we could do and lessen the expense. Next month, my antilock brake and 4x4 lights kept coming on. I took it to Merv's. Merv was awesome. He explained the car would need to be kept for at least 2 days to check out the problem. It took one day. Larry and Merv showed me the defective ring that someone had welded to fix. The expense was what he quoted it would be. These mechanics at Merv's are honest with you and tell you what risks you might be taking. They don't try to check other things on your car to make more money for the shop. I would recommend this place to all my girlfriends. You definitely won't get ripped off. read more

My family has been going to Merv's since 1989 when we started taking our cars there off of a referral. They are honest, friendly and will take care of you and your car. For regular maintenance I can usually drop it off in the morning and pick it up that same evening. They call you promptly to let you know what the cost will be and when its ready to pick-up. If you don't know what is wrong with your car, Merv's will figure it out and let you know the min/max amt of work that needs to be done at an honest and reasonable price. I highly recommend Merv's to families with a lot of cars and to those who want to drop off their car and trust it will be done right without a lot of fuss. read more

I usually just go to them for oil changes and routine maintenance but occasionally the dealer gives a quote that is so outlandish that I ask Merv's for a quote. They have always come back much cheaper and I haven't had any issues with their work. Perhaps one day I will get smart and just go to them first for all my repairs. read more

I agree with Danny S.'s post, this was a great auto body shop that has since started to sneak in price gouging and dirty tactics in light of the recession. I don't know if you can really blame them though. They were heralded because they offered service at cheap-reasonable prices. Now they provide slightly less service at reasonable-exorbitant prices. I've been going here for years to get my auto serviced, but it was my mom that had done all the negotiations. Now that I'm all growed up, I went there myself with my own car. They treated me indifferently, neither well nor poorly. However, they replaced my radiator and charged me $700 for it. This is roughly 200-300 more than should ever be charged for this type of repair. I tried to argue a bit, and they pretty much told me this is how things go now-a-days and that there's nothing I can do about it. 3 days, $700 dolllars, that's 2-star service read more

I took my car there after having been told when I had my oil changed at one of those national chains "Mr. So-and So" that I needed new brake pads in about four months. Well, four months passed, so I took my car in to Merv's. They checked my pads and said they have about another year of life left in them! They totally could have taken advantage of me and replaced the pads even though they didn't need to be replaced yet. But, they were honest and professional! I am so grateful. I will definitely be back!! P.S. I didn't mind that it was a no-frills place to hang around at all, as I was able to find plenty of things to occupy myself (Starbucks, Talbots Outlet, bank) in walking distance nearby while I waited. read more

I cannot say sincerely how grateful I am for Merv and his team. My husband and I were on our way to TN for vacation when our 2008 F250 went into reduced power mode. We proceeded to limp the truck to the nearest two ford dealers both of which did not have diesel mechanics! While standing by our truck wondering what we were going to do one of the ford mechanics came out and suggested we try to get it to Mervs. It was the place his family has trusted for years. When I called and explained our situation that said they could get us in for diagnosis by noon, great! We get it there and we're greeted kindly. They took our information and offered to drop us at the local mall so we had something to do. They called us by 10:45, much earlier then expected and gave us the results. Luckily it was nothing major. They were able to get us back on they road to TN by 1:30. We are so thankful to Merv and his team for helping us so quickly. read more

Like con artists, they start off by telling you that they need only $100 bucks to look at the car. Then Scott, the most rudest person I've ever had to deal with, tells you to further investigate the issue he would have to charge us $300 more. He doesn't look you in the eye, another red flag, and further acts like he owns the place saying and acting as he pleases. First, I would like to thank James L. He was totally right about this place. They are honest and do a fantastic job. I have always taken my 2001 Honda Civic (I am sure they are fantastic on other cars. I just happen to also drive a lemming-mobile) to the dealer because I am lazy. The last time I went to the dealer they gave me an enormous list of problems that I needed to get fixed ASAP to the tune of $1,350.00 The car was running OK so I thought that sounded off. I looked on YELP and since Merv's is near me I decided to give them a try. I bought the list in to show them. They laughed and told me they did not think my car needed everything on the list. I have been taking my car to Merv's for decades. As a female, when you find a good mechanic, it's like finding a good hairstylist- you don't let them go! The guys at Merv's consistently do a great job on my car, give me second opinions, and are honest about what I need and don't need/can wait on. I have a 2004 Toyota Scion that has never had any major repairs needed, but finally, the exhaust system started rusting out in various spots. Originally, they thought they might need to replace the whole thing, which would cost $1600, because Toyota builds their exhaust systems in 2 parts, rather than industry standard 3 or more parts. However, they researched what they could do to save me money (and still provide a safe, working option), and found a place to sell them just the middle section, which they welded in....saving me $1,000. I recommend them to anyone looking for a great mechanic. read more

They found the lick on the ac system, charge me $150 and $750 top of that If I had to fixed the ac system for good but, I didn't agreed to do it because, i was over charged start with So, people beware looked around prices with other workshop in local before you decided to take it there. Merv's is the most professional, honest mechanic shop I've ever dealt with. My brother first told me about Merv's Auto at least 20 years ago. I live in Ashburn, so I've tried a number of other shops closer to home, but I've never found anyone as good (or honest). I took my wife's minivan to another shop to simply get a a transmission flush. As I drove it home, I noticed it was slipping and making horrible noises. I took it immediately back and they told me it was because the fluid was dirty -they had just changed it. When they wouldn't address the problem correctly, I took it to another shop in Ashburn Village, they told me it would require a $700 repair. I finally took it over to Merv's and they quickly discovered that the first shop had disconnect the wiring harness. Merv's fixed it for a nominal charge and sent me on my way. This is only one of many times they could have charged me a lot of money for an unnecessary repair, but they always do the right thing. The only thing I don't like about Merv's is how far it is from my house in Loudoun County, but they are well worth the drive. read more

One of the mechanics, Francis, diagnosed my car when I was broken down on the New Jersey Turnpike, saving me a tow, God-only-knows-what repair shop and $$, and enabled me to get home safely. He talked me thru' a series of "try this", "put the car in Neutral", etc. and he was right! I have always had positive experiences and rates are fair. My 11 year old daughter got into a fight with the seatbelt in my Dodge Ram, and the seatbelt won! Seriously, the seat belt locked around her, and as she tried to get it off, it kept locking tighter and tighter, so I just took my pocketknife and cut it off of her to keep it from hurting her. I took the truck into Merv's, and Scott listened to the story (with a straight face, God bless him) and did a little research on the part (seatbelt and retractor). He quoted me an extremely fair price ($100 less than Safford Dodge quote) for the same part from the same distributor. I dropped the car off on a Friday morning, and by noon he called to let me know it was done. Oh, and they charged me $40 LESS than they had quoted me (I guess labor was quicker than anticipated). So, let me ask you, how many car service shops have you encountered as meticulously honest about labor costs? Yeah, me either, until Merv's. And the work was done with quality and cleanliness. My truck was returned cleaner than I left it! I do most of my own mechanical work, but I can tell you that for the foreseeable future any work I feel is beyond me I am bringing to Merv's. They have made a very happy customer out of me. I don't know why you would take a chance on any other shop in the area. Went to get an oil change at Merchants and they told us that it would be about $1500 to replace brake, rotors, struts, and shocks. Decided to get a second opinion at Mervs and total cost was $350 to replace brakes and rotors. Shocks and struts were fine. They are extremely busy there so we had to leave it for 2 days for the repair work. Overall, we feel that Merv's is honest and won't rip you off. Additionally, they are also a little cheaper than the chains. read more

We have taken our cars to Merv for more than 22 years. He is the most ethical professional I've ever encountered. He has talked me OUT OF more than $2000 in work I wanted him to do, saying that it was work we did not need. His prices are reasonable; he is as honest as a person can be; his mechanics are first rate. I once had my car towed 30 miles to Merv because there was no other dealer or mechanic in all of this region that I could trust as much as Merv and his staff. Dishonesty was my experience: Went to them for coolant issues and was told I needed front and rear brakes and rotors. Even after telling them I just had the rear rotors replaced not too long ago they insisted that I have an inspection coming up so don't want to risk not passing because of the brakes. I am so TIRED of being taken advantage of as a women seeking help. I would NEVER recommend this place. I told them I wanted my old parts back after they replaced them because my rear rotors only had 20k miles on them so I was going back to the place that initially put them on. Finally they did give them to me and there was nothing wrong with them in my eyes. The next day the owner of Merv's called me to say he wanted me to bring those rotors back because they gave me the wrong ones. Thank God I had enough sense to go to another shop to have them look at what was returned to me because I figured if the owner was calling me it was not to my benefit but to his. The shop I stopped by told me the rotors they gave me were the correct ones and NO the rear did not need replacing. He figured the shop wanted to switch out what they gave me for some rotors that were more worn. This was my first experience with Merv's and I only went to them because someone I met told me they were honest. Guess it depends on who you are as to the experience you will have. read more

The folks at Merv's have treated us fairly and honestly, and if you want to know the truth, I think they have under charged us for some of the work that they have done for us... I am not the person that writes bad reviews, but this time I have to warn people to stay away if you don't want to get ripped off. Me and my friends were regular customers at Merv and were satisfied with the previous service and the honesty of the shop. Unfortunately, it seems that the bad economy does change everybody and this is what seemed to happen here as well. Last week I went with my car to this shop again, never wondering what was going to happen. The car was throwing a Small Evaporation Leak code and was squeeling when started cold and I went to fix it. I was quoted a maximum of $80 for the leak and tightening of the squeeling belt. In the end, I had to pay $183 for changing a $10 leaking hose and the tightening of the alternator belt... a job that, in my opinion, was not even an hour of work. When I asked about the previous estimate, the answer was that that estimate was only for diagnosing the problem, even if I already told them what the problem was... and the rest was for 2 hours of labor. In addition to that, they found that the front lower control arm bushings need to be replaced, and I got a quote of $483 for this job, but fortunately I declined this repair !!! I did some research about this repair, and found out that again it is a 1 hour worth of work and the parts cost around $30. I even found somebody willing to do the whole repair for $110 !!! If Merv will continue this path to rip off customers, soon there will be no one going there anymore... at least I know that me and my friends won't go there ever again ! read more

If I could give Merv and his excellent crew 6 stars I would do it. I've been taking my vehicles to this terrific team for over 30 years. You will not find a more honest, well qualified, gentle natured group of professionals to work with than Merv, Larry, Francis, Scott and the rest of the team. Their prices are competitive but above all, they are honest and all ASE certified. Occasionally they get very busy but they still work diligently to get vehicles repaired as quickly as possible. I have 3 vehicles so it's easy to leave one till they can get "to it", but they always get "to it" sooner than I expected. Merv doesn't spend money making his facility look great, because he would have to pass that cost along to you. I've found disingenous dealerships and too many clearly dishonest mechanics that cost unsuspecting customers thousands of dollars in unneeded repairs. You won't regret using Mervs. read more

Saw some bad reviews on here and felt the need to opine. Merv's is THE place to go if you need a real mechanic who can actually find the one dang wire in an entire web of wires that's causing your car to freak out. The reality out there is that most mechanics cannot do this. They don't have the time or the experience to do that level of diagnostic work. They call Merv's. If you ask a mechanic to recommend a mechanic who will find and solve your odd problem, they will tell you to go to Merv's. Merv has had my car for long stretches while I suffered in rentals. The first time, it barely cost me anything. But, he eventually tracked the problem to a fault in the key that was constantly draining the battery and leaving me stranded. How the heck he did that, I have no clue. Persistence and knowledge. I just got my car back this past weekend. Again, he had it a week. The computer only explained part of the problem. Part replacement didn't resolve it. Eventually, Merv found one wire, one freakin' wire, that was periodically not working. Problem solved. No, it wasn't cheap. But, it was 1/2 what the dealer wanted and I'd bet my last dollar the darn dealer wouldn't have found the faulty wire. Merv's is where you go when you need an intelligent, persistent, trained mechanic who will solve your problem. It's that simple. read more
