There are places you go because you need something, and there are places you go because life is just better when you do. Messick's falls into that second category. You start out thinking it's just a farm market but inside, the place has all the usual farm market suspects--fresh produce, baked goods, meats--but then you notice the food counter. That's where things go sideways in the best possible way. The sandwiches are flat-out good, not "good for a farm store," but actually good. And the breakfast burritos are not normal human-sized food. They're the kind of burritos that make you reconsider your life choices halfway through eating one, in a positive way. Outside is where Messick's really shows off. Kids running everywhere, farm people doing what farm people do, and enough seasonal activities to keep families occupied until everyone forgets what time it is. It's the kind of place where parents sit down "for just a minute" and then suddenly it's an hour later and nobody is in a hurry to leave. If you're rolling in with a camper, it also works as a Harvest Hosts stop, which is a polite way of saying you can legally fall asleep there without anyone bothering you. Parking is easy in a grass-and-gravel area that's simple to level into, and once the day crowd clears out it gets quiet in that good country way. Verizon signal holds up well too, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on how hard you were trying to escape emails. What makes Messick's dangerous is that it's not trying to be anything other than what it is--but it ends up being more anyway. You go for a quick stop and leave feeling like you accidentally spent the afternoon at somebody's family reunion, except nobody made you help clean up afterward. In a world full of overcomplicated stops and underwhelming food, Messick's is refreshingly simple: good food, good people, and just enough chaos to make it interesting. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I am obsessed with this place. Their fall farmers market and activities are just amazing. It's 15 dollars to get in and there is so much for the kids to do. Even my teenagers had fun just picking berries and going in the maze. The people working there were so freaking sweet I just am in love. They had a "limited menu" of food but it ranged from chicken salad sandwiches to mozzarella sticks or a hot dog, fries were super crispy and fresh, and it was more than enough to eat and enjoy the scenery. You could pick your own flowers, pick berries, zip line, petting zoo, it was just awesome . So fun. read more

I love visiting Messick's Farm--it's always such a treat! It's a charming little country farm store with so much character. My favorites are their apple butter, peach butter, blackberry butter, and of course, the apple chicken sausage. The fruit butters are truly one of a kind--you won't find flavors like these at a regular grocery store. I made a special trip before school starts just to stock up so the kiddos can enjoy them for their lunches. Their ice cream is also incredible, so rich, creamy, and clearly homemade. I tried the peach flavor, which was delicious. The only thing that could have made it better would've been a few chunks of frozen peaches mixed in. On top of that, the service is always excellent. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and make the experience even better. I definitely recommend making the trip out at least once--you won't be disappointed! There's also a playground area for kids. The downside is, it's five dollars -- a bit on the pricey side if you ask me. Your local playgrounds offer much more. read more

We stopped for the sign and to look for watermelon. We absolutely got more than we bargained for. There were candies from our childhood, fresh fruits and vegetables, skin care, a train, and the best sandwiches ever. We were rained on long enough to do damage abs see everything. Been quite a long time since I visited Messick's Farm Market. I stopped in for breakfast this morning - I ordered a Breakfast Burrito with both bacon and sausage, a side of hash browns, and a bottle of water. The food is made to order - so it takes a few minutes - this is not a fast food restaurant - so please be patient. Once my order came up, I took it out outside out back - there are a number of tables outside to eat at. The Breakfast Burrito was huge - and tasty! But, it was poorly rolled. When I unwrapped the wrapper - the Burrito was barely "sealed." I had to wrestle with it a bit to re-wrap it so I could eat it. Here is the unpleasant part of the meal - the hash browns were hot and crispy - but they smelled strongly of - and tasted like - fried oysters. Now I love fried oysters - but I sure don't want my breakfast hash browns smelling and tasting like fried oysters. On Fridays - they have a number of fried oyster offerings - I am certain they are using the same fryer for both oysters and potatoes. I've worked in the restaurant industry in the past - and this is a no-no. The places I worked had multiple fryers - specifically so that certain foods did not impart or imbue their flavor into other foods. I ended up throwing out most of the hash browns - I just could not eat them. I hope Messick's Farm Market pays attention to their Yelp reviews and takes steps to remediate this issue. If I were updating this review - based solely on the hash browns - it would have descended to a one star review. Stopped by here after a long day of hiking in Shenandoah as my partner, my dog, and I needed a pit stop to refuel. When we arrived there were food trucks out in the back, but they were wrapping up for the day. No worries. We also saw that they had a ticketed entry for a kid's fall amusement which included a bounce contraption. Having no kids ourselves, we enjoyed watching the families with kids enjoy themselves from afar. I went inside the market and was super impressed at all that was enclosed. It looks much bigger on the inside than the exterior!! They have everything you'd expect to see inside a farm market, and perhaps even more: farm fresh dairy items, meats, deli items, cheeses, freshly made soups and sandwiches, fresh unshucked oysters, baked goods, candies, coffee beans, unique gifts, and around the back a homemade custard spot. I also was pleasantly surprised that they allowed dogs inside the market so that my partner and dog were able to come inside with me. It was a nice experience, so much so I almost felt like I was in Dutch County, PA. However, the service was extremely slow when we ordered chili from the inside kitchen. Took 20+ minutes to get them to pour us a bowl of soup to go, until my partner flagged them down. At least they apologized and owned up to the mistake. The chili itself was EVERYTHING we needed after just eating apples and meat sticks on our hike. It was hearty, flavorful, and really warmed the soul...it hit the spot! As far as the frozen custard, the texture definitely tasted homemade. I just didn't like that the pumpkin custard had too little pumpkin to it, so it was a bit disappointing. I also made the mistake of adding cookie dough bites on top of it which was overall yummy on its own, but awkward with the "pumpkin" custard Next time I go, I'll make sure to stick to vanilla and topping it with cookie dough bites and potentially oreo bits - that sounds like it'd be a 10/10. We spent Mother's Day here as a family and had a great time. Three kids accompanied us-aged 10,5 and 2; and all enjoyed themselves too. The mud was in force after torrential rain days before our visit, so it made it hard to fully enjoy all of the activities. The slides were too muddy, the duck race area was too muddy. The youngest enjoyed the cow barrel train ride the most-but it was a very long line to wait more than once. We also did gem mining for $10. The older kids liked the bounce pillow most. We had some prepared chicken salad from the store and it was delicious! The highlight of the visit, of course, was strawberry picking. There were plenty of ripe berries, although very muddy so access was limited. One unique activity they did was a candy canon where the kids collected candy shot out of a canon. read more

We came here for strawberry picking. It is a nice place for family who has small kids. There is a huge playground. It was my first time to do Strawberry picking. Our kids definitely enjoyed it. However most good ones are gone. I appreciate that this place is super low key about everything and reservations are not necessarily. I've tried the food three times. Each time I get something different and I am disappointed every single time. It's sad because I really buy because I love the concept of this place but I just can't continue to spend my hard earned money in this economy in bad food. The steak and cheese was so bad. The Ruben smelled like it was rancid and sour. The chicken tenders were overly cooked that they were hard and salty. The fries were good my son enjoyed those. There was this lady with dark black glasses and she is the friendliest person I've encountered there. All the other employees are not friendly and just don't look happy to be there or excited to assist you. I don't know I've worked in service all my life so maybe my standards are high that especially in a mom and pop establishment those working there should be overjoyed when people walk in the door but every time we don't even get greeted. We love the park and the goats. We'll have to try the ice cream next and hoping that's what helps us excited about spending our money here. read more

I went here for strawberry picking a few months back and it was a lovely experience. It was one of the few activities that could be safely done during the pandemic. I really liked how Messicks farm noted social distancing rules and tried to keep everyone safe. Strawberry picking wasn't too intuitive. You go into the general store to get a bucket. You then pick all you want and come back to weigh the bucket and pay. You have the option of purchasing their bucket too. The superstar was their food! They had amazing, hot items in their general store, like fried chicken livers. (I like that stuff). They also had a variety of local-ish items. We got lucky and there was also a fantastic BBQ truck in the back parking lot. Probably the best BBQ I've had in VA! I will definitely be back for other Farming adventures. read more

I loved this little market. There were so many delicious treat options. Definitely the place to go to stock up on snacks. We bought cheese, popcorn, fruit fry pies, soup mixes, fudge, different kinds of nuts and some baked goods. Compared with DC the prices seemed fair. In additional to all the snacks, they have a custard windows and a deli where they will prepare sandwiches and the like for you. This place was so fun!! We had an absolute blast spending the whole day here with our kids ages 10-1. Our 3 yr old spent all day on the zip line running back and forth and our toddler loved the barrel train, tractor diggers, and duck races. The market was very fairly priced and had great food. Fabulous family place, not only for sustainable produce and locally grown and made products, but for the sheer fun of it! There is a phenomenal playground, a deli, a soda-fountain-style homemade frozen gelatin counter and plenty of outdoor seating. We also sincerely appreciate them being Harvest Hosts. What a wonderful experience! We were able to rescue at least two pounds of fabulously red jalapeños, as well as stock our pantry with some jams and relishes. The purple romaine is delicious, and we have yet to taste the cappuccino peanut butter, but we will! We will also enjoy roasting the two small pumpkins we found in the patch! There was one little pumpkin out there that was a tad freaky, though. Given, it was Veterans Day, and quite a bit past harvest time....but I swear this one pumpkin had either a divine likeness or a zombie-like facade. It was hard to decide! LOL read more

Messick's has the potential to be a decent market if they paid more attention to detail. I have attempted to give them my business multiple times but each time recently I have been disappointed. In the past 6 months I have had several sandwiches made incorrectly even after having them read back the order to me. Issues have included burnt, black toast for a breakfast sandwich,a deli sandwich loaded with pickles(bread was soggy with pickle juice) and onions when I didn't ask for pickles and only asked for light onion, a breakfast sandwich with extra crispy bacon when I asked for country ham, and even a remake sandwich that was made by the "kitchen manager" had lettuce on it although I did not want or ask for lettuce. Granted they have replaced my sandwiches after multiple calls/emails. However, not once have they gone above & beyond to make sure that I was satisfied or made me feel that they were even truly sorry for my inconveniences. I will no longer be a Messick's Farm customer. #sorrynotsorry read more

It's amazing to me that this facility can charge for wristbands to the playground area when the only attraction that is up and running is the bounce pillow... every single playset is extremely worn and/or broken. Farmers Market! So great to have an option like this available. It's worth the drive to get here to check out their farm fresh organic vegetables. They have quite a selection in season with all your favorites. While you're there order a sandwich. They have a great selection of deli meats paired up with a nice selection of fresh cheese's. In the words of my friend, "best $5 ever spent". This was when we came on an off day! Plenty to do if you're looking for something fall themed - corn maze, trampoline, slides and more. Plenty of pumpkins and photo shoot ops. Other activities included feeding the goats as well, but you gotta buy feed for that. The folks running it were incredibly friendly - didn't make it 10 steps past the door without a handshake and asking what we were looking for! Speaking of buying, their store is pretty stacked too. Plenty of fresh produce, with local products ranging from grains to cured meats. The counter cafe food is actually pretty damn good as it is cheap, and the custard window on the side hits the spot on a warm day. I normally don't find myself this far out unless I'm trying to escape the city. With Messick's it wasn't just that - there was so much value it made me want to come back! If you can find an event such as their Fall Festival, you can't go wrong. read more

Now granted they were busy but they need to pay attention to the orders. Her bread came on rye and no bacon. The ice cream was good but a lot of ice crystals in the blackberry and raspberry ice cream. We bought a bag of shelled peas. The bag had some moisture in it but didn't think twice. Got home and started to work on the peas. They were a little slimy but not bad but most of the peas had sprouts starting. Overall not happy with our visit.
