I can't say enough amazing things about Messina Club! I went for the first time last night to celebrate a friend's birthday and we all loved our dinner and time there. The food is so delicious - we had the salmon toast, Messina salad, all 3 pastas and the scallops and each dish was full of flavor and the ingredients are so fresh. Do NOT skip out on the panna cotta. Wow. The best mix of salty and sweet and chocolate :) the cherry on top was the impeccable and warm service. We felt so welcomed and the intimate knowledge about the wine from our server was so helpful! Bonus was also the 90s hip hop playing. We look forward to coming back here. Yes. Go here. Get a membership and go. This place is super cool. I got a membership in March 2020 and did not make it here until Feb 2023, and it was worth the wait. They helped me immediately find the info I needed to obtain my membership card- aka an email from 3 years prior, and then got us set up with a table and some stellar Espresso martinis! The vibe in here was laid back and fancy but not pretentious. The decor was understated but still very stylish. Food was , even the dessert which I usually am very picky about. I want to go back next time and just spend some time at the bar and hang out because it seemed like the perfect spot to do just that. I was thrilled to buy the membership and help them out during Covid- swore I was single handedly saving their business and turns out it was a good investment on my part! Lots of Michelin restaurants have a unique stance. Just because Philly doesn't have stars yet doesn't mean Messina wouldn't deserve 1. That said - definitely could be even more of a club vibe. Attitude works. But having to use a passcode or a card to scan in could help patrons feel like the rules are justified further. Exclusivity in both attitude AND actions. The pastas are divine. Messina is absolutely phenomenal for a special night out, a casual dinner, or a quick drink at their excellent bar. Everyone who works at Messina is warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Each plate that comes out of the kitchen is thoughtful, well-prepared, and, most importantly, delicious. The pastas were a highlight, as each one offered a twist on a classic theme, providing the chance to enjoy something familiar and new at the same time. Chef Eddie is always looking for ways to make great dishes even better, such as by adding a subtle kick to the incredible short rib. Wow - just wow! Get the membership, and you will literally unlock a culinary experience that is pretty rare to find in Philly. I'll start with the food - which was killer. As a member, you can bring up to 3 guests and when you make a reservation, you can only dine from their pre-fixe tasting menu (important to know in advance). I am copying the menu below - my favorite bites were the swordfish and the pork, but the king salmon crudo was definitely the most unique. On top of flavor, their plating was just stellar. They also were able to easily accommodate my wife, who is a vegetarian. They either upped the starch or veggie in most instances, but did have some creative replacements for dishes (like rhubarb for the salmon). King Salmon Crudo: beet ragu, smoked buttermilk, dill ​Poached Scallops: celery root, apple, walnut ​Swordfish Piccata: capers, chicken jus, spaghetti squash ​Creste di Gallo: mushroom duxelles,maitake, enoki ​Cheshire Pork: sweet potato, kielbasa, nectarine mostarda, horseradish Pumpkin Cheesecake: honey nut squash, burnt sugar boba, coffee crumble Now onto the vibes & service! You obviously have to show your membership card in order to dine, so that immediate sense of exclusivity is always cool. You can walk-in to dine, but it is a smaller space, so I wouldn't bank on that or just be prepared to wait. You can eat at the bar too, so keep that in mind. All of the staff are really nice, and very attentive. They are deeply familiar with their menu and drink offerings. We had questions on the food, just out of curiosity, and they were happy to engage. They also were helpful with drink recommendations - which are all delicious. They had really good music playing throughout the night, and their decor can keep you entertained or drive conversation by itself. Tons of interesting art, and it is all set in an old-school social club setting. It's almost like taking a step back in time a bit. Very cozy place, and while it can be a tad loud, it does provide an intimate setting for a date. I can't wait to go back! I was so taken back by the food, I forgot to take pictures, unfortunately. The reason for 1 star. Up front , the food was delicious. With that said , I've eaten at a lot of Michelin star restaurants that were not as pretentious as this place. We had just sat down , and the bartender proceeded to lecture us on the rules of the establishment...on and on and on. We get it. You guys really need to chill. I don't need that kind of lecture before I had a chance to sit down and relax. It left a bad taste. Relax and act like a professional instead of a snotty nosed hipster. The old Messina Club has been resurrected with a younger up beat vibe. The place has been nicely restored with a modern bar and four comfortable stools with backs but four or five that are not. I'm big on comfort when watching an Eagles game which I enjoy doing here. The food here is excellent. I highly recommend the meatballs with extra red gravy. Drinks are well prepared and you get a good pour. Membership is limited. The club rules are similar to that other South Philly club. One nice difference is the Messina accepts credit cards. If you're a Founding Member you also can make reservations in advance. read more

The food was great. The reviewer Clark G. is a dipshit. Everything we had was incredible. The playing of the pork chop was spot on. The music was A+. At the end of the meal they had a survey card which asked for different recommendations from music to different types of food to be made. To my surprise there was an educational shark video on the TV. Further, the bartenders (who are very handsome and lean) were discussing sharks. What an incredible experience!! Once you become a member and make your first reservation you can look forward to an incredible culinary experience. Once you ring the bell and show your membership card you are waked to your table. Order your drinks they are delicious! And then you sit back and wait. The 6 coursed meal includes a crudo, a salad, a fish a pasta a meat and a dessert. We had 4 drinks and between food ($190), drinks and tip we spent over $300! The food was incredible and the right size portions, I could live without the drinks and save $100 and the service was great. I think the only thing that was not great was the music: wayyyyy too loud, I couldn't hear my husband or the waiter speaking inches away from me. And hard rock? Really?? Not what I pictured in a south Philly Sicilian 100yo club. It sounded like I was in a cheap dirty fishtown neighborhood bar... not the right vibe and honestly if you are gonna pick such a specific type of music keep it low. My sister bought a membership here and I am so happy I was able to experience the Messina club during my family trip home. We were greeted by a very friendly guy at the door and he explained the process. Super nice and welcoming. We were seated right away and we were super impressed with the specialty drinks and beer/wine selection. You can order a high life for four dollars or a fantastic cocktail for 15. We went with a rye whiskey cocktail, with blueberry liquor(wow) and the House red wine...so so so yummy! We then got three dishes: the pieroggis, a seasonal salad, and the house made pasta! Each dish was flavorful and equally as good as the next! So much goodness that we could have ordered an entire other round of food. The service was just enough and not overbearing. I loved the vibe, the staff, the craft cocktail and food options. So I bought my membership on line at https://www.messinasocialclub.com/ months ago and then summer happened. I finally stopped in on my way home last night. The woman at the door processed my membership card, explained my membership privileges and then let us in the door. No photos and limited phone use allowed. Inside we found a dimly lit early 20th century-vibed space. The bartender Shamus said the club had the second oldest liquor license in the state and that we sitting in the front of the original 1909 bar. But what was cool was while there were some key original character features, they painted the walls a trendy dark blue and added brass and gold sconces and chandeliers and art. Music was awesome. The drink list was fabulous- a mix of traditional cocktails and newer creative ones- not too creative to be well balanced. We only had drinks, but food menu was similar to the cocktail menu having a blend of styles of food at varying price points. Definitely going back. read more

I was impressed with my first visit to Messina Club as a guest of a member over Labor Day weekend. The hostess welcomed us kindly and we sat at the bar for drinks. Our bartender told us a great story about the Mummers after I ordered a Mummers-themed cocktail (yes, I got a second one!) The soundtrack was killer and the space is beautiful and moody.
