The last time I reviewed Kostas, it only included the excellent atmosphere and as many Citywides as you can buy for $5 a pop. Well lemme tell you about their food. In fact, I come here nowadays mostly for the food. Dad mode! It's excellent. In a city with some excellent Mediterranean, it is capital-E-Excellent. Way better food service than you probably assumed you could get in a dive bar, but then again, this is Philly, and we tend to surprise people like that. Highlights are the gyro platters, all of their dips - the hummus, baba ghanoush, and tirokafteri - as well as the pastisio, which has been explained to me as kind of the Greek version of lasagna, made with long hollow penne-like noodles. Don't sleep on the moussaka either. Or the gyro sandwiches. And wash it all down with cheap beer and whiskey. And say hello to Vasili (spelling?), which is easy because he'll probably say hello to you first. read more

Stopped in here on a Saturday. Reviews were all good so figured we'd try it. The ambiance is "Dive bar". Not much more to say about that. Service? They didn't have a server. I don't know if that's an all the time thing or just this night. The bartender told us to order at the bar and she'd bring it over. Which she did. Now, the star of the show, the food. My son and I split the mixed grill platter. Easier if I cut'n'paste the description from their menu rather than me trying to describe it: "A mix of charcoaled pork, chicken & bifteki skewers, gyro meat, & Greek sausage. Served over fries with feta cheese & olives." Every item on the platter was cooked to perfection. The meats were all grilled with a perfect char. I particularly loved the sausage as the casing and a nice snap but moist an juicy inside. The pita I think is made in house, certainly tasted fresh. It was soft and chewy with a dusting of spices. It could have been a meal itself. Tzatziki was the thickest I've ever had with a wonderful flavor. Let's talk French Fries. Ever go to a place where the fries are limp or greasy? Or they start out hot and soon they are cold and lose texture? Well, not these. I don't know how they did but from the first to the last, the fries stayed hot, crisp, with a tender billowy interior. This platter was delicious, every bite. And we left stuffed. The food is 5 star good. I took one star off for ambiance and service. Living 4 hours away, I didn't really know where to go, but saw this place around 8pm and decided to stop in. Samantha and Star were absolutely amazing and so welcoming. As a career bar manager and bartender, these two ladies are cream of the crop. They're so friendly and welcoming, it's such a pleasure. As far as food, we were pleasantly surprised. We got the Falafel appetizer, chicken skewer and rice entree, and Kostas special Buffalo wings. The falafel were a fair bit dry and tasted mostly of breading. The chicken was as if it came from a fine dining restaurant, it was perfectly cooked and some of the most flavorful chicken I'd ever had. I could eat it every day for the rest of my life. The wings were massive, slightly breaded, and perfectly cooked. I'm extremely picky about my wings and I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I wish I lived here. Excellent food! I had passed this restaurant multiple times and finally had the chance to come in. I tried the grilled shrimp platter and the soup of the day (chicken shell soup). Both were delicious and came in generous portions. The shrimp, served over rice, was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The soup of the day was also excellent. I'm glad I had leftovers to enjoy later. Went to this gem in Fishtown. WOW what an amazing gyro. I definitely highly recommend going to this bar and getting anything grilled. The marinade on the beef was pretty tasty and it was perfectly charred. We also got the calamari which was pretty decent but we both agreed we should have gotten something grilled instead. Apparently the owner of this place is in his 90s and still cooks there. He makes a really mean tzatziki sauce. All the people working the bar were so nice! The waitress showed us a back outdoor area. There was so much hidden room. The guy at the bar was apparently related to the owner and he was very vivacious. I learned that "time and being clean" is of the utmost importance. My friend and I stopped by today for happy hour and cannot wait to come back! It was surprisingly very empty even though the happy hour food and drink deal is incredible! Multiple $5 city wide specials, a lot of good food deals, huge dive bar inside and 2 tables outside. Plus the friendliest most attentive server. Best thing we had were the Greek nachos, which were so unique and delicious. Had all the Greek salad toppings paired with fried pita chips. Came with tzatiki sauce and tasted even better when hot sauce was added. I'm sure paying extra for meat would've elevated it. $6 during happy hour! Second best thing we had were the Dolmades. I loved the fresh pita that came with Skordalia. The puréed mashed potatoes were delicious, but honestly the pita bread that paired with the dish was the star. So warm and fluffy that I wish it came with more! That dish was also only $4 during happy hour. Last thing we tried were the $3 chicken skewers. Oops, didn't realize this is definitely more of a bar setting with a restaurant--I made plans to grab dinner with a friend here to catch up but it was really loud so kind of hard to hear each other. Still glad we came, because the food was really good! We couldn't eat outside even though there were tables set up, but we sat further away from the bar after ordering our food at the bar and paying our tab in advance. The baba ganoush was so light and refreshing with the pita, a good starter for the meal. I really enjoyed the beef/lamb mix for the gyro and wish the photo did more justice, because there were generous portions of the meat inside. I liked the seasoned fries as well! When I discovered this little slice of heaven right off girard I found myself there 3 times in one week. The backyard is legit perfect. Plenty of seating, string lights, plants, and a lot of space! Great Greek food that's well-portioned and super affordable. When you initially walk in, you probably think it's more of a dive bar and not really a place for food. Ok, so this is a long due review for Kostas. I'm surprised how I never went to this place despite staying so close to it and the cuisine being one of my favorite ones. We went there for happy hour on a weekday and I must say, they have some good happy hour deals. When you enter, it's your typical bar with a dimly lit restaurant but they have an awesome backyard that is blissful during summers. They have $2-3 beers during happy hour. You get an extra tequila or bourbon shot for $2 extra. Now for the food. We ordered the spanakopita, grape leaves, babaganoush. Their pita is amazingly delicious. Service is great. We had our server there when we needed her but it was not to the point of hovering around. The restaurant owner himself mingles with the guests making sure everyone is well fed and ok. I went here for the first time last week and loved it! They have a great happy hour from 4:30-6:30 Monday-Friday with half price appetizers and drink specials. It has a dive-bar type feel to it, with pool tables as well, but the food was wayyyy better than your average bar food. As an appetizer we got the greek nachos, which are fried pita wedges with a bunch of great toppings. Super good. For dinner I got the mega gyro sandwich (only $10 for so much food!) and it was delicious, especially the pita. I'm not a huge fan of fries in general but these were seasoned really well so I actually really enjoyed them! My cousin got the spanakopita as her meal, also a ton of food, and the bites that I tried were soooooooo good! The service was great too and the food and drinks came pretty fast. If you want cheap drinks and a dive bar, this is a go to. It should almost be a fishtown staple in my opinion. I don't have too much experience with their food as Ive only gotten it twice, but it's pretty average and a little over priced in my opinion. We three were plainly not the average Kostas clientele. The wife, her developmentally disabled brother, and I all clock in around the half-century mark, give or take a year or a few, which made us maybe twice the age of many of the folks hanging out here when we arrived. Plus, the bar-hopping days of the wife and me have been over for a LONG time. And the brother-in-law won't even have a beer. So seeing a bouncer at the door, on a Sunday night no less, might have sent us on our merry way in search of a gentler environment. So might have the borderline dive-bar frontroom, once we edged past the bouncer. (Don't get me wrong: 20 or 25 years ago, I spent my fair share of time in rooms like this.) But it was a beautiful evening, and we'd seen the photos of the nice outdoor patio and the solid-looking Greek food on Yelp, and Kostas was only a few blocks from where we were staying. You've got to sidle past some pool tables and feel your way through an almost pitch-black hallway before reaching the patio. So, yes: On an evening when the temperatures were in the 70s and crowd on the patio was quite sedate (there's actually a sign out there admonishing patrons to behave), we had a very nice time indeed. And Kostas's food is fresh-tasting and satisfying, as well as economical (I don't think any of our plates were more than $10). Pork souvlaki was cooked properly and well-seasoned, and a side salad had quality, varied ingredients--although ours came without dressing of any sort. Seemed like some good local beers were on draft. Our server was pleasant and helpful when we could actually flag her down, which wasn't all that often. read more

Came in with a couple of friends on a Friday night. We (by which I mean myself) were very hungry and was just walking around fishtown for some food. Totally felt like a bar towards the entry. There were pool tables around. Felt like a vibrant place but not overly crowded. Our waitress was very kind and patient as she explained pretty much the whole menu to us. Two of us got the platter and they were HUGE. The lamb was tender and very flavorful. The "greek lasagna" was great and so was the eggplant dish. Did not get drinks. Easy to find on the street. We were here on a weekday happy hour and decided to sit out side. The place is huge inside with all pool tables, bar tables and TVs. The inside look was of a sports bar. We decided to sit outside and the weather was not bad. The outside seating is decent and is covered on all 4 sides. Their happy hour menu was pretty reasonable. They had $2-3 beers during happy hour. For $2 you get a shot of tequila or bourbon and a can of beer. Not bad. The funny thing is that we actually got a can of beer instead of beer in a glass. While I'm not a huge Greek food enthusiast every now and again the craving for gyro strikes and I am so grateful Kostas is here to fulfill it. Recently I sampled the gyro platter and baklava and was so happy with both choices. The gyro platter comes with a very tasty rice as well as pita which I really enjoyed. The portions are quite large so I had enough for two meals. Also the baklava is perfection and must not be missed.
