I highly warn against using metro bike share. Just to take a $1.75 bike ride, a $51 pre authorization is placed on your bank account and the money will not be refunded until after 5-7 business days. I have used many bike shares throughout different cities across the U.S. and Europe, and have never experienced anything like this. just now New If I could give 0 stars I would. We rented 3 bikes from the Dockweiller docking station with no issues. We went for a 15 mile bike ride and on our way back the chain broke on my friends bike. We waited with her as she called the metro bike " support team" who told us they couldn't send anyone out to assist her. They said "someone could make it out tomorrow ". We were still 5 miles from the docking station. Since they would not send anyone out to help her I had to contact my son who lives nearby to come and pick her up and load the bike in his car and run her back to Dockweiller. Metro bikes seemed to be fine with this solution, they did absolutely nothing to assist us and wouldn't refund us. They expected my friend who is her latest 50s to push the bike back five miles. We had to fight for her bike to be refunded and they overcharged us for the other two bikes. They would not compensate us for my son having to come pick her up. Nobody will return our calls and we are disgusted. We camp at Dockweiller several times a year and always look forward to renting bikes from Metro bikes ,but we will no longer use their services. Do not use this company. If you breakdown they will not help you! You are on your own. They provide you will faulty unmaintained bikes and terrible customer service. read more

I had a great experience with metro bike share on my last trip to Los Angeles. They're great for downtown and have even expanded into silver lake. These bikes are meant for transit and not pure hours long recreational rides (in other cities this would cut into local bike shop rentals and I don't think these are very comfortable for long hauls) the bikes are super cheap! I got a month pass for $17 -- in sf an electric bike rental can easily run $6 a pop so it was a great deal. One thing that would be nice is if the bike share marketed the bikes as a way to get around the gnarly parking situation in Los Angeles. In la if there is easy parking you're probably not going anywhere worth going to . In sf i would often use bike share or pack a folding bike in my car if I had to drive into the city and then park further away. I always got free and safe parking this way. Unfortunately SoCal people like most Americans want totally free easy parking exactly where they want to go and they definitely do NOT want to walk. I think the bike is a good compromise read more

Da'Ja in customer disservice is rude, unresponsive, and threatening to close my account because bike station is full and charged more than 1/2 hour for me to find another station that was also full and not accepting returned bikes. I returned the bike to a station but was charged. I have a friend that is a reporter for a newspaper and I'm going to try to have him write a negative article about Da'Ja. read more

Bike sharing is a great concept. It's nice to have access to the bikes as opposed to walking in LA. LA Metro bike has the same advantages as any other city's Metro bikes, which earns it 2 stars. The gold standard for a metro bike system is Taipei, Taiwan, where you can add money to your transit card, swipe and pull the bike out for a low flat hourly rate (charged to the minute). You can't just swipe your metro card and rent an LA metro bike. You have to go to the app or the touch screen at the station (which often malfunctions). That being said, the pricing system is overly complicated and misleading. LA metro bike doesn't have a low flat rate. They offer an hourly rate and an all-day and monthly pass, both of which are misleading. An all-day pass does not allow you to rent the bike all day. It allows you to rent multiple bikes for under a half hour all day ($1.75 every half hour after that). Same with the monthly pass. The purpose, according to customer service, is so the bikes are used for transit, not pleasure. The genius who thought this was a good idea must not understand that transit trips in LA usually take longer than a half hour, even by car. Also, bike sharing programs and cities benefit when the goal is to maximize bicycle usage. One low flat rate using the bus/subway transit card is the obvious logical way to encourage usage of the system, rather than pissing off people who are initially enthusiastic and turning them off from the system. My recommendation is not to waste your time with LA metro bike share until they fix their pricing system and become more convenient to use. For more information about Taipei, Taiwan's bike share program, here's a short article about it. THIS is how bike sharing needs to be done. Each bike is bought by the city for around 9200 TWD (~USD 300), and comes with a 7 years maintenance. To make it really convenient, the city has organized each station from 200 to 600 meters from each other. What makes you within 5 to 10 minutes walk from wherever you are in the city. An universal and simple payment system One of my favorite this about Taiwan is probably the EasyCard payment system. With a single card, you can use it in the metro, convenient store, supermarkets, and YouBike. Probably the best thing is that you can use that card everywhere in Taiwan. Banks with their debit/credit cards and phones (via NFC?) have the Easycard payment system integrated. All those following card/debit cards integrate the EasyCard payment chip. The signage was misleading about how to turn on an Ebike, the difference between pedal bikes (miserable) and Ebikes (great), and that Ebikes cost an extra $1. I called customer service and they couldn't help me turn on my first Ebike. I thought I could take the bike to my destination, but then learned I had to take it to the next docking station, otherwise I'd be charged for the entire duration of my event. Finding a docking station (far away from my event) made me 30 minutes late, even though I scheduled an extra 30 mins to learn the Metro Bike system. My return ride was on an Ebike. I learned how to turn it on (the switch is on the front side of the little monitor), and the ride was a pleasure. I rented a bike in Hollywood yesterday for Ciclavia. Someone stole it when I wasn't looking so I called Metro Bike Share and they charged my card a $500 fee. This all happened within the span of an hour. I was penalized $500 because of a thief. I want other users to know that if someone steals your bike, YOU will be charged. And there's no way this bike was worth $500, it was old and rickety. Horrific experience. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. If I had known I was going to like it, I would have purchased the one-day pass. The bikes were well-maintained and easy to ride. I rode it from my hotel to Union Station, then instead of waiting for the Dodger Stadium Express I took it from Union Station up to Sunset & Vin Scully and walked the rest of the way. But, I thought I rented the E-bike and only realized I hadn't when I started pedaling up a steep hill! But the ride back was enjoyable, and I rented again to go to the local bar and back, and back to Union Station the next morning. But the limited number of stops to use them at makes the accessibility rather limited, and it would be a shame if one of the racks I was trying to return it to was full, especially if there was not another nearby. If they get racks at every bus stop, it will be much more accessible! read more

I looked forward to renting from Metro Bike LA. I rented bikes from Portland, OR and Seattle, WA with no issues. My temporary K-town home was a five minute walk from to a location near John's International Market. Initially, Metro's customer service was responsive when I called for questions. Sunday 9/19/21 was a time-consuming, frustrating, exhausting bike ride for me. I'm a very seasoned cyclist. Riding long and hard is normally not a problem. I called customer service to verify I could lock my bike from my K-town location to a N. Hollywood location. "Yes," emphatically stated the CS rep. I meandered through Echo Park, Silver Lake, the LA River bike path, Griffith Park, bikeways along Riverside Dr., to finally at a Metro station at Cahuenga at Burbank Blvds., I thought. My destination is a minute away by foot. In N. Hollywood, those Metro stations use a U-lock system, elsewhere use a rack system. All bike share rentals I've ridden have ONE BIKE SYSTEM! NOT TWO!!! Why would Metro Bike LA create two different systems?! Are the people who rent bikes from the west side and downtown areas that different!? Ok. so there are two bike systems. Why doesn't Metro Bike LA say that on their website or anywhere else!? TOTALLY INANE!!! Who is the genius at Metro bike who thought of that!? Maybe there's more than one! I called customer service and explained my situation, got put in hold then phone hung up after a couple minutes. Called back. Ring. Ring. Ring. No answer. Realizing my only alternative was to ride back to Hollywood, the nearest rack system with the clock running. Ruined my afternoon plans. I texted my predicament during my journey in real time. Finally got around to renting one of these for a spin around DT today. I've been a little wary about riding in the congested and dangerous downtown area, but since it was a holiday the streets were pretty empty, which made it ideal for the metro bike share experience. Recently, DT has put in a lot of bike lanes, some better than others (Fig and Spring have some protected lanes), and now you can actually bike pretty much any where. In an hour I was able to ride from FIDM through Olvera Street and Chinatown to the LA Historic Park and back. Not bad for $3.50. If the Metro Bike Share program really wants to take off, it needs to work on it's pricing. They advertise a daily rate of $5, but it isn't a true "use it all day" price. You pay the fee and then you can ride any bike for 30 minutes or less for free, which is not great if you want to take a long bike ride, like to the Silverlake river bike trail, for example. They are going in the right direction, but they aren't quite there yet. Also, my friend's bike seemed out of gear and was a little hard to ride. It's a 3.5 star experience. All in all, definitely worth trying and has some great potential and use for the areas between other types of public transportation. It also lets you see Downtown from another perspective. I'm In love. Forget finding parking in DTLA. Forget the traffic. Forget even carpooling! Take metro train stations towards any Downtown Location and get a metro bike! It's awesome! Fun! And active... I had my first experience a couple days ago and found it too good to be true. I would love for there to be a cash option but since you're technically almost renting out a bike; you need a card and phone number. This could be a great program but there are so many hoops to jump through. First is actually figuring out how to pay for it. I read up on it before going to a bike share station and I still had to return home bikeless because I needed a tap card that I left at home. Once I tested it out, a very quiet alarm sounded off after I had gone 3 miles. I didn't hear it at first because I'm on a bike outside. Anyway I was in Burbank, on the bike path and I had to turn back to noho to return the bike. - this seems ridiculous to have a bike path connecting you from noho to Glendale and you can't use it. Also it charges you extra for going out of the zone. Oh also, you have to bring your own lock if you want to run errands. I was going to stop in at Target but realized I can't because I didn't have a lock and the u lock they provide only works at the metro bike racks . I can't wait to see the program as it progresses but for now I don't want to be a paying guinea pig read more

As someone who works downtown, I love the Metro Bike Share program. I chose the $20/month option which allows me to ride for free if I return the bike within 30 mins. Anything over the first 30 mins is $1.75/30mins. I use bike share to grab lunch, run errands, meet with friends and to get to work from my bus stop. Best thing about the $20/month option is that if my first 30 mins is almost up, I can just dock that bike and then get another one for 30 mins more at no extra charge. The Bike Metro app is awesome too! It shows where the docking stations are and how many bikes are available. You can also chat with Bike Metro reps to inform them of maintenance issues. The reps are very helpful and reply quickly. read more

I've ridden Metro Bikes every weekday for a year. When it works, it's usually good. Sometimes the bikes need a bit of repair, but only about 2% - 3% of the time. However, today when going to Union Station to catch my train, all the bike stalls were full. It was 6AM and little did I know that customer service doesn't open until 7AM. I had to ride my bike two miles to the nearest station (that I could see on my phone). Then I had to take a lyft back to the train station. For all the convenience they've provided for a year, this one day ruined all of it. I will just walk from now on. read more

Wow, complete scam, like criminally do. they have these stations all over the place so I decided to give it a try. They asked for a credit card at the bike station to link to the account and proclaimed it was free for the first time/30 minutes. After doing so I was about to start riding, but I got a notification on my phone from my bank telling me my credit card was charged 51$. I called to ask why and they said it was to cover the bike incase it's broken or stolen. I told them I don't want to rent it after that kind of overcharge, and to please reverse the charges. They said it would be, by the next day. This was on Tuesday, and it's now Saturday and the charges are still on my card, not as a pending or in transit charge like Uber or Jump bikes would be that get reversed if i couldn't find a driver or something, but a actual charge. I've called every day since then and told them the charge hasn't been reversed and they have said different stories every time I call. On top of that, every time i call and tell them of the overcharge, they know exactly what I'm talking about every time, like "oh a overcharge? For 51$?" It seems like they pull this scam with the hope that people will just forget about the overcharge by the time it should be reversed is up. Complete scam artist, exactly like those guys on Venice Blvd that try to give their "cds" to tourist, or dress up in Elmo suits in time square. read more

I absolutely love the Bike Share program. There are plenty of stations and the bikes are new and in good shape. I think the city really has a new gym with the Bike Share program and I hope it continues. It is very easy to use a tap card to check out a bike and returning a bike is very easy as well. Weather I'm going across the city or just up the street it's fun to grab a bike and go. It is one of my favorite things Metro has offered. I do wonder if they clean the bikes very often because some are very dusty and dirty but overall I have no complaints. read more

This is just another example of a government boondoggle pouring taxpayer money down a bottomless pit on a program that will eventually fail after they realize they can't afford to maintain the program. Here in Pasadena they have a station right in front of PCC and another one just 400' away at Colorado and Hill (I wonder who thought that was a good idea). I have yet to see a single one of these bikes on the street they are just sitting idle on the racks and appear to be custom bikes that are very heavy, left out in the sun all day and will look like hell after a year as all the rubber will dry rot while all that plastic will fade and get brittle from the constant exposure to UV and heat. Has the city ever divulged how much this program has costs so a few people have the convenience of having a bike to ride which is heavily subsidized by the taxpayer having to pay for all this? That is their "dirty little secret". That $20 a month fee is $240 a year more than enough for the rider to buy their own bike yet they feel good about the program which is likely cost the city 1000's of dollars per bike per year just to maintain the program. This has been tried in other cities and was abandon as will be the case here in Los Angeles. An even worse example is the California High Speed Rail program which is just another example but on "steroids" and will likely never get finished after wasting billions of dollars of "borrowed" money! read more
