What a way to kickstart my birthday morning! My daughter and I enjoyed every moment of it - and having Gary guide us made it even more fun (and - bonus - informative). Will recommend to anyone looking for an adventure that's off-the-beaten-path, but local!

Paddling the LA River! LA River Expeditions and the great conservation work they and founder George Wolfe do and practice all year is best experienced in the summer paddling expeditions down the river. We started at Rattlesnake Park and paddled through rocky sections, short rapids down chutes, and took out at Egret Park about 2.4 miles downstream. At the take out at Egret Park, you ride a well worn mountain bike back to the start, which in itself is a great part of the experience. We learned a whole lot from George, our guide, and friends got the river navigable, got it EPA visible and then protected, and detailed hands-on mini lectures at stopping points on the river about the flora, fauna, and birds. Not class 4 or 5 rapids, but maybe one better: a real river in the heart of Los Angeles! You usually have to get your tickets early in May or so, as they sell out completely very early in the season, but this 2015 year might be different if at all due to the low water levels and SoCal drought. Do this paddle if you can! It's one in a lifetime!

Such a great staff, Really patient and helpful as well. Even if You don't have any experience in tours like this one, They will explain everything to You. SO You don't have to worry about anything. I had so much fun. That's a kind of experience that I would like to repeat.

An absolute must do for any angelino that needs a different perspective of our city. My sons loved it, and it was great for a novice to get to enjoy nature and learn from the tour guides. Thank you Kelly, you made an educational experience so much fun

What an awesome experience! I signed up on Eventbrite, it was 45 dollars. I attended the 3:30 session. It's a little tricky to find parking its location at the intersection of Sepulveda and Woodley. Make sure you have your waivers printed and signed beforehand. Wear waterproof footwear. Consider bring additional clothing for changing. You will need sunscreen and insect repellent. It was my very first time kayaking and I had a little difficulty but the instructors were super helpful especially Chelsey. It was a nice experience. There is quite a bit of litter in and on the banks of L.A. River. The tour guides were knowledgeable regarding the wildlife, plant life, and history of the river. The waters were calm and up to 11 ft deep. It was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I do recommend this place and I would come back.

Some friends gather every year to celebrate a birthday by going on an adventure instead of buying gifts... Because my husband, a buddy and I had loved our first LA River Sepulveda Kayak trip; I booked this birthday adventure for all of our friends. Most had never kayaked before and they all had the best time! It was a hot day in the San Fernando Valley but cool and refreshing on the river. The guides were really helpful in their paddle instructions, their information about the future and history of the LA river was facinating. The wildlife and greenery we saw on the river was amazing. My husband, our son and I kayaked the Glendale Narrows in June and wow it was so much fun...also an eye opener! Don't miss either trip! Best Lucinda, Aug 2015.

worst people and not enjoyable at all. Such a waste of money and when we got there, there was no water in the river.

Ask the Community - LA River Expeditions

Can I swim in the river?

The LA River water quality is safe to be in at the Sepulveda Basin location, however on our excursions you will remain inside the kayak during the tour.

Yesterday at 3AM we returned home from our fourth Uniworld river cruise, of the Douro River in…read morePortugal aboard the Queen Isabel. Before I talk about the ship, let me talk about the experience in Lisbon and the transition to Porto. Our local host was Pilar and I found her full of good information but also many inaccurate generalizations and not particularly open to feedback. For example, when Alan told her something was confusing her response was, "No, it's not.". The generalizations I refer to are statements like, "No one can make you good tea in Portugal." or "There is no good beef grown in Portugal.". One of the pieces of information I most liked was that while men say "obrigado", women say "obrigada". I had no idea. The trip to Porto included a stop in Cuimbra for a resoundingly mediocre lunch at a restaurant where food was figuratively tossed at us w/o choices unless we spoke up assertively. If I knew the name of the restaurant it would get 2 stars. The second stop in Cuimbra was at the University, where Sofia, our guide, gave us history and background and showed us through the gorgeous chapel and through the library. There were several flights of granite stairs down to enter the library, some w/o handrails and I didn't feel Pilar was sufficiently mindful of those w/ mobility issues, which included several of us. Fortunately there were no falls and the library was worth the effort. When we boarded the ship we were greeted by the staff lined up in welcome. Queen Isabel is only 5 years old, but felt older to me, particularly in comparison to the Joi de Vivre, which is a couple of years old and larger. Queen Isabel is narrow because the locks on the Douro are narrow. There's about 4" clearance on either side. The ceilings in the lounge are low and my first impression of the room was that it was crowded w/ furniture and people, which it was because that was where everyone was gathered before being taken to our rooms. I have learned over several cruises not to go w/ my first impression of a ship. Whatever the configuration is, I've found I will adapt to it. We were shown to our rooms by staff. Our stateroom was small and the bathroom was tiny. A woman who is half my size was commenting on the difficulty getting in and out of the shower. But we adapt and lived comfortably there for a week. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. There was no practical way to use the computer in the room because of space, so Romica, the Assistant Hotel Manager, graciously shared his computer table in the lounge. I was disappointed to find bottled water and plastic straws in use on the ship rather than refillable metal water bottles and paper straws. I guess it's not a company-wide policy shift but a ship by ship decision. We were docked in Gaia, across the river from Porto. The first morning was foggy and Porto looked unspeakably beautiful in the fog, like an Impressionist painting. The trip down the river was gorgeous and the locks were fascinating, some extremely tall. I have spoken about some of the tours and experiences in separate reviews. We didn't go to Salamanca, Spain because it involved a long bus trip and there were tours we missed because they involved more arduous walking than we were up for, but we enjoyed the cruise and particularly Tânia, the effervescent and charming cruise director, who offered Portuguese lessons and other information. The food was good and plentiful, as was the wine. There was a cooking demonstration where we learned to make the pastel de natas. The staff was well trained, warm and helpful as is the norm w/ Uniworld. I particularly enjoyed bonding w/ Diogo over sports when he recognized my Warriors sweatshirt at breakfast one morning. His Porto soccer team had just won the championship. When he saw me later he would flex his arm and proclaim ""Arriors are the best!". I loved it! The wifi was free and more reliable than the elevator, which seemed to be under repair half the time. This was a varied, active and interesting cruise and I would recommend it to those who are interested in wines, history and scenic beauty. We were not as active as you might be; I doubt you would be bored. Portugal is a beautiful and friendly country.
