Right now you can take this bus from downtown Seattle to see the cherry blossoms at The Quad and the U District Cherry Blossom Festival. Sure you can take the light rail from Downtown to Capitol Hill to the U District but if you want to take the scenic route then take the 49.

So this bus is great! The best part of the bus is that it runs super late until 2am or 3am! I feel bad for bus drivers who work late and have deal with super drunk people. But if I want to have a late night out with friends on the Hill or even in Downtown, I could definitely rely on bus 49! It does seem to take very long, though. The bus is not very fast and stops VERY frequently. The bus is often on time. The bus, however, seems very dirty most of the time. Not sure why that is.

It continues to be a good way to get from the downtown Seattle area to the Seattle Center area, when getting off of the Westlake light rail station below. The only thing about this particular station is that it was a little hard to find because it doesn't appear to be a train station at first, quick glance. It's on University and 2nd - look at the surrounding buildings and you'll see the subway looking tiles and where to go.

It is named such being next door to Benaroya Hall, the home of the Seattle Symphony. The entrances to the subway system in downtown Seattle are (unintentionally?) hidden. Google will get you to the right corner, but the entrance/exit is specifically in one place. In this case, it's the SouthWest corner of the building, so had to walk around until I found signs for it...even then, it's just not as easy to find as other stations in more transit-intensive cities. You need to choose which train you want to take, before going down the appropriate set of stairs. Once on the platform, one would notice the extreme amount of space between the tracks going in opposite direction, and the lack of height from the platform and the tracks. The gap between the tracks is wide enough to handle 3 or more lanes of cars...so I wondered "That's a lot of work to dig just to allow repair vehicles to come down". Later I learned the history behind it. The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel was initially built (dug) to handle transit buses, serving that purpose from 1990 to 2005, and then shared by light rail and buses from 2005 to 2019. During that time, it was one of only two tunnels shared by both buses and trains in the U.S. Now it is just for Light Rail, with the large bus lanes being a remnant of the past.

It is connected right next to the stadium, and has multiple entrances at different levels, along with large land bridges to handle surging crowds. The platform is very deep, coming in at almost 100 feet below ground. I came during Winter Break, so it was pretty empty but could imagine the controlled chaos during football season.

Our tour group of almost 50 used them for motor coach service and we liked them so much we even booked a private day tour out to Mt. Rainier. My mother-in-law, has mobility issues, so the driver would pull as close as possible and even arranged wheelchair service for her when we arrived at Crystal Mountain! They had full knowledge of all the local Seattle neighborhoods, history and the flora and fauna. It was super interesting and the driver was friendly and so nice. One of the best parts was knowing that Quality Town Car can arrange our ground transportation around the world through their affiliate program. One phone call, email or website visit sets you up in style. Plus, it turns out it is a female veteran owned business! We had such an overall fantastic experience with QTC that we wanted to share it with our online friends and community.

Over the course of four days, I was given four completely different SUV price quotes, each time blamed on a "system" or "technical" error. The rates changed repeatedly with no clear explanation or accountability. If a company cannot consistently generate an accurate quote, it raises serious concerns about their ability to deliver service on the day of travel. This process was disorganized, frustrating, and a complete waste of time. I ultimately cancelled the reservation and would not trust this company for any future travel. I will be advising others to avoid them as well.

This includes 12th & Jackson. Lately I've been reflecting on this intersection. It wasn't always a bad part of town. I remember visiting this neighborhood as a kid. My family shopped for groceries at Viet-Wah. We ate at this one Filipino restaurant at a strip mall. I think it was called Tropical Hut? It was a welcoming, thriving business district of services, dining, and retail for multi-generations. Things took a turn in the late 2010s and hasn't recovered since. Jackson Street, the streetcar route from Pioneer Square up to Little Saigon, used to have a vibrant music scene. I read up on the Jackson Street Jazz Trail and the Seattle Self-Guided Green Book Tour. Seemed like it was the place to see and be seen between the 1920s-1960s. I'd love to see interpretive signs and markers celebrating those spaces and artists. If you still need a music fix you can hop on the streetcar and visit the Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, and Elvis statues on Capitol Hill. Some people catch the streetcar for work at Harborview or Swedish. Some might catch it up to school at Seattle U or Seattle Central. The streetcar shares the road with other vehicles, bikes and scooters. It's painfully slow compared to the light rail and buses. Transit enthusiasts and tourists might test out the streetcar this summer. Consider it a leisurely scenic route. The South Lake Union Trolley is empty and boring af (I honestly don't know why it's still operating) compared to the workhorse First Hill Streetcar. The First Hill streetcar carries a diverse crowd. It can get crowded if there are major events like the Capitol Hill Block Party, festivals in the C-ID, games at the stadiums, or art fairs in Pioneer Square.

After I got off, it was only a few steps to get on the streetcar. At the streetcar station, there were a couple transit security people helping passengers. I used the transfer for the streetcar. The streetcar was clean. The transit security people politely checked our passes. I felt very comfortable the whole time.
