Ordered a Swiss mushroom burger (medium) with onion rings, and fish and chips, with sides including slaw, mac 'n cheese, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Despite my bad decision to order close to lunchtime, on a Friday, I Road Warrior'd my way through fairly heavy traffic, got our food, and arrived home. Burger was perfectly cooked. The fish and chips were solid, but I'm afraid the Haile Bistro at present outdoes them for both the size of their fish serving and its flavor. Step up! Slaw was decent, with regular and red cabbage and not an overwhelming amount of mayo-based dressing. Mashed potatoes were clearly homemade and not flakes, and the chef appears to raise the bar a notch and season the gravy with cumin on top of extra sage, perhaps Latino influence? Only hitch was the mac 'n cheese, decent, but really needed more cheese. Back again because I'd planned to, and I'll go back again in future, COVIDIOTS be damned!! read more

My husband and I used to have a dog that would wake us up super early in the morning. So on weekends we would always go to Metro Diner because we were awake and they would cook us breakfast. We've been back even though we don't have our dog anymore. We were there on Saturday morning to grab some grub before heading out to various things we were going to do. I usually get the waffle. Metro's waffle is all things delicious. It's usually fluffy and perfectly done. It's hard to get waffles anywhere else because I know they just won't compare to Metro's. I can't give Metro 5 stars because of the floors. I know it seems downright silly but I hate walking in there feeling like any minute I'm going to slip and land on my bum. Consistency is key and I must say that metro diner is incredibly consistent in their food. I have been here on several occasions, either sober, "stimulated", or hungover and my experiences have always been pleasurable. The servers are always pretty attentive and I have never had an issue even with a complex order or with any dietary restrictions. I have lost count of how many things I've tried on the menu so I cannot recommend one specific thing more than anything else but I will say even if if you blindly take your server's recommendation you'll leave happy. I would give it another star, if I noticed two more things one if the bathroom was cleaner which I have seen on clean on several accounts and if the tables were a little bit cleaner as well I've had sticky menus several times and it kind of dampened the mood a little. read more

If it's your first visit to Gainesville, I would ABSOLUTELY suggest going to Metro Diner. It's the perfect brunch restaurant with a classic, homey vibe. The waiters/waitresses are always so warm and welcoming, and the food compliments just that. It radiates Southern hospitality. The first time I went here, I was so surprised with the quality of food I was served. The Chicken & Waffles -- AMAZING. It's a great place to go with your parents and grandparents, but even just your friends as well. Most places you come in an hour before close and the food is usually so so. Not here. The waiter was extremely friendly and attentive. I ordered the Mac Stack based on other reviews and my partner ordered the chicken Parm as well as the cheese fries! His were great but my Mac Stack was divine! Ha! We went out of our way on a trip home from Orlando to stop in at Metro diner because my husband raved about the chicken and waffles. We had a nice variety of dishes, from the famous chicken and waffles, pancakes, potato soup, spicy chicken biscuit, and a cheeseburger. Everything was delicious, although my daughter didn't love her cheeseburger because the bun was buttered and it tasted greasy to her. Once we ordered the food came quickly, and everything was hot and fresh and the service was fantastic. After Orlando, the prices were such a refreshing relief! I would definitely come back! We had a party of 8 and had to wait a bit when we arrived. This was my only complaint about the whole visit. Since we had a big group, I tried to use the online wait list about every 15-20 minutes starting hours before we arrived to make sure we could give the restaurant a heads up and shorten our wait time. The website always showed "No wait, come on in" and the waitlist wasn't even clickable because it showed no wait. When we arrived, we found that the hostess didn't even know they have an online wait list and that if I had just called, they would have been able to put a table for us. Since we didn't call ahead, we had a close to 30 min wait. This was a bummer because we were traveling and wanted to get on the road, but not the end of the world. The hostess was very nice about it and it was not her or anyone else in the restaurant's fault, but "corporate" should probably make sure the wait list works if they plan to have one. Since this was not the fault of the restaurant itself and more of the website, I didn't take any stars for that. They handled our wait beautifully and checked in often to tell us what they were doing to help get us seated. read more

I met the new manager last night and got to meet the franchise owner as well. Great people, great attitude and very knowledgeable. We stopped on our way to Atlanta, and were a bit scared when we saw that the place was packed. We didn't want to spend too much time dining, but still decided to give it a shot. I Stayed in Gainesville for almost a week, as Huricane Dorian forced me to evacuate SE FL and travel to Gainesville. My hotel recommended The Metro, and for very good reason: 1. Great food- the menu has all the typical breakfast options, plus wonderful Southern fare such as Chicken/Belgian Waffles, Shrimp and Grits, Southern Omelets and Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. They cook your eggs just as you like 'em. The bacon was the best I've had in a diner. 2. Very good service- the managers are always visible and helping to expedite orders and assist the servers. The kitchen works like a well-oiled machine. Two thumbs up! 3. Moderate prices = good value. 4. Location- good location close to the hotels and the UF campus. I'm looking forward to returning to Gainesville- perhaps to see a Gator football game and explore the downtown area. I'm definitely returning to The Metro Diner. (it's not just a breakfast place. Had an excellent experience today at Metro Diner!! I was craving breakfast food but my husbands not a huge breakfast eater. This place serves Breakfast AND Lunch ALL DAY The only pancake options that I seen was a 12" pancake..the menu isn't very large and doesn't have a lot of food value combinations in my opinion. Pretty much eggs and a meat is your only combination option. I couldn't even find pancakes and eggs...which is weird it thought. We were told a 30 minutes wait. They do that texting wait thing so you don't have to stand there the whole time and listen for your name. We went to the fish store next door and walked to the old Winn Dixie. They texted us in about 20mins. Zack was our waiter AND HE WAS AMAZING!! He was genuinely kind and had a HUGE smile. He would make us laugh but wouldn't linger too long. I'd been in Gainesville for 3 years and I'd never gone to this place, but I'm so glad that I did! I went for brunch on Saturday and it was overall pretty good. The potato hash had the perfect crisp to it and went really well with the sausage links and shortcakes. Eggs were cooked exactly how I like them. One thing that fell short with me was the biscuit. It was dry, so it didn't sit well with me. However if I had ordered it with the gravy, I'm sure it would've been alright. Another thing was that the coffee tasted strange. Went to Metro after doctor's appointment. The staff was very helpful with my daughter who had surgery the day before. We were seated in Julia's section and we were in for a treat. Met with a contagious positive attitude from Julia who took our order promptly. She was very attentive to not just our table but her whole section.
