I am Hungarian. I lived in Europe for over a year and I've had schnitzels in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Transylvania. This restaurant understands exactly how to make an authentic schnitzel, it was perfect. In the picture the plate doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary but the flavours and textures were delectable. The sauerkraut was house made and was better than many sauerkrauts I've had in Europe. The gravy was outstanding and the potatoes were satisfactory. I think they deserve their title "best schnitzel in town" I agree that it is true. read more

After reading the countless reviews on Yelp, I finally decided to come by for dinner on Saturday. My boyfriend ordered the schnitzel and sausage with sauerkraut, home fries (unremarkable), and soup of the day (cream of cauliflower). I ordered the perogies with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. The perogies were truly delicious, but with only 6 tiny pieces, I wish they gave more. The mashed potatoes were dry, looked a few days old, and were very salty, with some bites decidedly more salty that others, a sure sign that they were not mixed thoroughly. Luckily, a few extra dollops of sour cream helped the situation. The red cabbage was interesting to try. The soup was also extremely salty. The sausage was standard and quite tasty. The schnitzel was okay. The sauerkraut was fine. We've both tried our fair of traditional dishes in Germany and this was not a close comparison. It's hard for me to describe the service, which usually doesn't factor into how I feel about a place. The service was attentive but the small talk here is slightly off colour. Staff were amazingly friendly and safe (Covid times) and I loved every bite. My first meal in Kitchener after my move from Toronto and it was totally comforting and delicious. This was my wife's birthday choice as she loves schnitzel. We arrived and were greeted by Britney who quickly got a table together for the 7 of us. We had a table in the back area by the washrooms. When we were walking back I though to my self that this place is dated and needs an upgrade. But after a while I thought maybe they should keep it. It's part of the Metro experience. This place makes everything from scratch and you can tell. I ordered the schnitzel, rib and pig tail platter. It came with soup ( home made mushroom and pasta) garlic bread, choice of potato and choice vegetable. My wife also had the schnitzel with perogies and a cabbage roll. Both of our dinners were great! Big flavour, tender ribs, meaty pig tails and great sides! Our server Britney was great also, made a few jokes with the kids and really did a great job making sure we had everything we needed. read more

I have come to depend on getting a good meal of schnitzel when going to the Metro. Sadly, I was really disappointed with my last visit. I ordered the Champion schnitzel with sides of mashed potato and cole slaw. The meat was overcooked and dry and the mushroom sauce was not good. The cole slaw was inedible and had the weirdest taste. I didn't eat any of it. The potatoes were lumpy and luke warm with a crater of melted butter on top. I certainly have had better at this restaurant. I haven't given up on this place, but if my next visit mirrors this one - I will be done with the Metro. read more

Note - before posting this I tried to contact the restaurant a number of times via their website email and their Facebook page. I never hot any reply. It was my wife's birthday and she chose the Metro as it is (was) her favourite restaurant. We have been to the Metro countless times over the years and have always been pleased. Last evening however was not the norm. My wife ordered her favourite cordon bleu schnitzel with spatzle as usual, and ceaser salad with light dressing as usual. When the salads arrived they were promptly dropped off and the server quickly left without any chance for a word. Since the salads looked the same and the server did not inquire who had light dressing, we were fairly certain there would be an issue. My wife's salad appeared identical to mine, neither looking light on the dressing. Nobody returned to the table to ask how the salads were until it was time to clear the plates. And when the bowls were taken away the server did not inquire about the salads. When the entrees arrived all looked well. However when my wife tasted her spaetzle I could see by her expression that something wasn't as expected. I asked if the food was ok. She said she wasn't sure but something didn't seem right. I tried it and yes, it just seemed not right, texture was off and the flavour a little strange. The server eventually returned to the table and inquired about the food. We pointed out the issue with the spaetzle. She went to check with the kitchen and upon returning told us she tasted it and it seemed a little off and the chef told her the spaetzle was made Saturday. She offered a replacement and my wife chose fries. The fries arrived promptly but were obviously reheated and not fresh. Lots of crappy inedible pieces. My meal and the schnitzels themselves were great as usual. When the bill arrived the server had taken 10% off my wife's meal. We paid, tipped and left. You can see a number of places here where the ball was dropped. 1 - salad not as ordered 2 - no followup by staff on the salads 3 - serving food that should have been tossed end of day Saturday 4 - serving reheated fries 5 - reducing the meal by 10% when it clearly should have been comp'd 6 - in most restaurants the manager would come over personally as soon as there was an issue Spaetzle, like mashed potatoes, should be made fresh daily. The fact that you would serve 4 day old spatzle makes us wonder about the safety and age of all the other food being served. Clearly the chef has some gaps in proper food handling procedures and doesn't taste for quality control (or can't properly taste if they are a smoker). Serving reheated fries also shows a lack on just the basics. (I used to work in a kitchen and serving reheated fries was an absolute no no. Actually serving reheated anything was forbidden.) The wait staff also needs training on followup and resolution. Your prices are quite reasonable but that is not why we go there, it is for the quality and consistency that the Metro has always provided. Also the staff and atmosphere are always friendly. We have had many great times and meals there over the years. Things are done to reduce costs and to try to serve the customers as quickly as possible, but sometimes these decisions are not always the proper choices, despite having the customer's best experience at heart. In a place like the Metro we expect the food to be made from fresh without having to request this, and that we don't need to inquire when various items were made. read more

First things, first...! Why was this added as a "Cambodian" restaurant? Hopefully, my change goes through and it gets updated to a German restaurant. It's schnitzel, people!!! Apparently, a lot of the locals say that this is the best schnitzel in town (as Albert O. mentioned). All the locals I've spoken with note that this place is the place to go for schnitzel. I ordered the Gypsy Schnitzel for lunch today ($10.95). The gypsy schnitzel came with sauteed red and green peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes. You also get a choice of mashed potatoes, home fries, or french fries AND either a salad (red cabbage, toss, caesar) OR vegetables. You have to choose whether you want a salad or veggie. But you get a choice of potatoe for sure! The gypsy schnitzel was good. It was fine. I'm definitely no schnitzel expert, so I can't really claim this as being good or bad, but for the quality and quantity of food and the price, I thought it was quite reasonable. The caesar salad was quite nice! Every piece of romain lettuce was covered with the caesar sauce which was not overly saucey, salty, etc. It was just right. Believe you me! I ate every single bite of my romain lettuce/caesar salad. It was good and well worth it! The home fries were also good, nicely flavored. What are home fries? Depending on where you go, I guess they can all be different, right? Well, home fries here at this location are pieces of potato cut into medium sized pieces and covered with some spices and probably pan-fried or baked. *** It looks like a small restaurant once you walk in. It's quite quaint! There are several small rooms that only hold 4-5 tables each, but it's like having secret passages .... that lead to another room that holds 4-5 tables. Pretty neat. I liked it. All in all, enjoyed it and would come back again. Rated it 3 stars because I don't know what is considered to be EXCELLENT versus not. read more

I love this place. I've been twice so far and both times, I've been super happy with my meals. This time I went, I told them I was allergic to dairy and he said he'd make sure that the schnitzel used only an egg wash, instead of their usual egg and milk wash. He also listed off the ingredients in the (apparently homemade) caesar dressing (mayo, red wine vinegar, fresh garlic.. lemon?) so I would be sure I was good to go. My friend also made things difficult because she can't eat pork, so she went for the chicken option at $2.50 extra. When the food came, she suspected that she actually got pork, and the server swooped in and said 'I think we made a mistake, let me take this away and we'll remake your whole meal." So she got that back in a few minutes, everything hot and freshly made. He then told us we'd be getting an apple strudel on the house for the mistake. I love how proactive they were about the whole thing. She didn't even have to say anything. Service was excellent the entire time. The guy was very friendly and personable, and the food came out pretty quickly, considering it was definitely freshly made (no frozen schnitzels!) I had the Vienna schnitzel with pig tail and my friend had the metro schnitzel (stuffed with bacon and sauerkraut). Tasty as hell. The pig tail was okay. Not a ton of meat, just a lot of fat. Tasted like pork. I LOVED the home fries, which are actually roasted potatoes with a bit of sauce on them. Addictive. The meal was more than enough, I basically ate half of it and will be enjoying the remainder for lunch today. A full plate of food + caesar salad + garlic bread = $18. Parking's out back. They also have a small party room with it's own bar at the back of the restaurant. If I lived in Kitchener, I'd definitely have my birthday here. read more

The Metro has been making the best Schnitzel in town since before I started going in 1990. Their reputation is well deserved! We had 18 of us there today for a work lunch and I had to get back to the office earlier than the rest. The staff were very accommodating to serve me right away (I called my order in ahead of arrival) and I got to the meeting with time to spare. It really tastes like a home cooked meal. I'm German and it is exactly like eating my mom's (or my own) Schnitzel (without the dishes). Fantastic! read more

Went to Metro on an impromptu craving for German food. The internet said they have the best schnitzel in the region, so of course we had to try it. We arrived about an hour before their closing and the restaurant was empty. The server greeted us with a smile and offered us prompt, friendly service. The menu boasted 2 full pages of different schnitzel variations-I didn't even know you could do so much with schnitzel. We each got our own schnitzel (the classic Vienna, and the Metro stuffed with ham, bacon, and saurekraut). The schnitzel did not disappoint. It they were so delicious and perfectly fried. I probably wouldn't get the Metro again as there was a bit too much meat in there for me, but would definitely come back to try all the different schnitzel options. The portions are quite large. Normally I would not give this place a 4 rating however, the food was quite good, large portions for very reasonable prices. The decor was meh. The service was meh. The waitress appeared to have better things to do than serve food. Which I will get to later.... I ate the Goulash and it was fantastic. One of my daughters ordered perogies with potatoe salad and of course I tasted the salad, it was pretty good. She enjoyed her perogies as well. My other daughter ordered sausage with potatoe salad.. I tested her salad too.. Just to be sure :) Yep the food was good. While we were there the waitress was a little snippy and hey we all have our off days so whatever... But the best part was when the waitress got into it with another customer over the amount of ice in the coke. I watched and listened as the customer complained about how much ice was in her coke and the waitress got all annoyed. It was like I was in some sort of movie. I ate and listened. It was very entertaining to watch. So long story short... Don't expect great service but the food and prices are great. The food is reasonably good with hearty portions. Several reviewers indicated that Metro had the best schnitzel in the Kitchener Waterloo area. Our party found the schnitzel was good but not great. We have mixed reviews for the service. Our waiter was good; the hostess that took care of us before we were seated did and said several things that left us speechless. 1. We had a 6:45 reservation. Our table was not ready. After standing around the front door in 90 degree temperatures for 10 minutes with a small child, the "hostess" allowed us to sit in an unused dining area. We were provided drinks after WE said it would be nice to have something cold to drink while we waited. Upon receiving the drinks we asked for, she kindly asked us not to mess up the paper placemats or cutlery. I initially thought she was joking. We were a party of 5 with a young child that was forced to wait standing in a hot waiting area. We had to ask to be served drinks and sit down and then were asked not to make a mess. WOW! Words failed me. It gets better ... 2. This same hostess informed us that people were taking a long time finishing their drinks and that was why our table wasn't ready. Apparently they had ordered a pitcher of beer and weren't consuming it quickly enough. It gets better still ... 3. The hostess came back 5 minutes later and said she had "WARNED" the table that we were waiting and had reserved the table. I suppose she said, "Drink up and leave". Was this supposed to impress us? This made us extremely uncomfortable and we contemplated leaving on the spot. Given that the restaurant closes at 8:00 pm and it was now 7:10 pm we were pretty sure we would face the wrath - or at least verbal reprimand - of the hostess from hades if we dared take too long to consume our food. The hostess was unbelievably rude and made what would have been otherwise decent food - less than palatable. We tipped our server 18%. A further tip to management would be to remove the hostess from any capacity that involves interacting with human beings. It was 95 degrees outside and we are sure it was even warmer in the kitchen. This is no way gives front of the house staff the right to treat guests the way they would treat second graders or prison inmates. Words still fail me. We didn't complain because we really couldn't believe what took place. I instinctively thought we were on a hidden camera television show trying to capture our collective reactions. The food was fine. The waiter was fine. The young lady that took care of us before we were seated is profoundly unfit to work with the public. read more

Please note: Before I wrote this review I called The Metro and gave them a chance to make it right. I was not allowed to talk to the proprietor and was stonewalled by the fellow who answered the phone. Week of Feb. 16-20 one of us visited The Metro, had lunch and inquired about bringing a small group 10-15 on a Fri. evening for dinner. In spite of what the website says they refused to take a reservation. They did suggest a time, 5:30 PM as being the most favourable. No mention on the website, the menu nor at the door that they charge a 15% surcharge for groups. Fri. Feb.27/15, 11 of us arrived by 5:30, some earlier, no mention of surcharge. Service very slow, I suspect there were only 2 people working the entire place (+ cook) but 15 minutes to receive the menu? Ordering and waiting for our dinners took far too long but as we were a convivial group no one complained. My soup was only lukewarm, my cabbage roll cold, but my schnitzel was hot. Despite the delay everything was tasty... if hot would have been even better. I do not dine out often so a cool to barely warm meal is a real disappointment. After another long delay, the bills arrived with the surprise additional 15% charge. At the cash out we were also presented with the optional choice of adding even more to the "Gratuity" charge for this poor service. Apparently The Metro has a problem with the "Dine & Dash" crowd. Not difficult to believe when you seldom see a staffer to even get a glass of water so it may have become a target for this fraud. Hardly justification for slapping your respectable patrons with a surprise extra fee. I suppose the dashers will return but I will not be booking my group for another visit anytime soon. read more

I've come back a few more times while I'm still in the Waterloo area, and each time has been fabulous. I've come for dinner the past few times, and since I've tried the Pilsner and Parisian schnitzels. Parisian is by far my favourite - lots of cheese, yummy mushrooms, and pairs well with the home fries. As well for dinner, you get soup or salad, as well as the two sides to go with your schnitzel. Unless you have a huge appetite, you're guaranteed to have at least one more meal from the leftovers! I definitely recommend the Parisian, it's now my go-to when I get to Metro! read more

Ordered take out the other night from work, looking to bring home some comfort food to an ailing family. Metro did not disappoint. I ordered by phone, reading from their online menu and spoke with a courteous fella who explained all my options. I picked it up 15 minutes later, exactly as ordered. The schnitzel was crispy, light, and flavourful. The Hungarian goulash and spaetzel must have come from an Oma hiding somewhere in the building-authentic, rich and tasty. The red cabbage and sauerkraut were tart, delicious foils to the rest of the sides, which included mashed potatoes, garlic bread and broccoli soup. The Caesar salad was slightly soggy, but likely due to the nature of takeout: couldn't eat it right away. Just over $60 for two adults and two kids to have some authentic European comfort food. Skip the chain restaurant next time. Take the Metro. read more

The Metro is one of those places I always wondered about. It looks like a dive, and you can't see inside because of the curtained windows, but their sign, which boasts "Best Schnitzel in Town!" seemed to exude such self-confidence that I had to see what it was really like. So my bf and I decided to give it a try for supper one night. We were pleasantly surprised with the interior decor. I expected vinyl booths, cheesy wood panelling - but I found it quite charming inside, with brickwork, hardwood (looked original) flooring, and a lot more room than you'd think from outside. We had a pleasant young man as our server, and he did his best for us. We ordered the schnitzel platter for two, and were rather flabbergasted by the massive amount of food we received. Four kinds of schnitzel, plus a couple of add-on dishes. Let's just say we had schnitzel for the next 2 days for lunch at home. I don't have much schnitzel experience to compare to, but I didn't LOVE them. They were just "good". There were a couple of strange things we noticed. Somehow our order was taken and our food served while a group ahead of us still hadn't even ordered. The servers- while pleasant - seemed rather overworked and harried, and it wasn't terribly busy. Overall, I would say you get value for your money when it comes to the food. It's definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for schnitzel, and a lot of it. read more

I ate here recently in a group of 6 people at around 5pm on a Sunday evening. Everyone's food tasted good, and the price was fair, but the wait service was very understaffed. We sat for 45 minutes before the waitress was available to take our order. She was just busy waiting on about 12+ other tables. I probably won't return despite the excellent chicken and schnitzel. Don't bother getting the meals delivered. It was a Friday night and I am sure they were busy but the meals were cold and we did not get what we ordered. It took almost 2 hours to get our orders delivered and a quick microwave did not revive the flavour. Unfortunately the Metro has gone down hill in recent years. The food & service especially was shamelessly poor. We waited approx 40 minutes for our salad that comes with the schnitzel dinners and it took more then an hour for our schnitzels to arrive. The schnitzels were disappointing and were not made as per the Traditional german schnitzel method which is supposed to be a piece of pork pounded out thin & nicely breaded, instead it was left thick like an ordinary breaded piece of boneless pork. The saurkraut was like vinegar, the caesar salad was bland and not worth the wait. The biggest disappointment was the amount of time it took to get our food & the wait staff was not the least bit gracious or apologetic. We waited a ridiculous amount of time for a very simple order without any apologies whatsoever from the wait staff. The experience was a huge disappointment since we have been dining there for decades -- no more. Sadly the Metro is off our dining list permanently. read more

They have claimed to have the best schnitzel in town. In a city with the biggest Oktoberfest outside of Munich, that is a big claim. I haven't tried all the schnitzel in town yet, but the Metro serves them up delicious in many different styles. You can find the breading and topping combination for you. read more

The food is very delicious and you get so much for a very reasonable price. But the service is absolutely horrible. The last at two times I was there with my family. Each time we had the same server. I'm a server myself and I would never treat customers the way he does. Left us sitting there for 20 mins after we finished our meals. He saw that were done eating but just walked by. There was two tables in the whole restaurant so he wasn't busy. He's got so much attitude and is very snappy. We asked for a dessert menu, 5 minutes later he comes back with the menu and says"keep in mind we only have one thing in stock" and walks away. We asked why are you bringing me menu then and he just walked away. Another 5 mins go by before he comes back to take our order. Just terrible. And then he brought the dessert and our bill. Without asking if we wanted anything else, or if we're splitting the bills nothing. Just dropped it and then it took another 15 mins to come back with the machine. It's a shame because the food is amazing. But just because of the service, I probably won't go back. read more
