I volunteer at the MWHS as well as act as a foster for a senior cat with serious health issues. The staff and fellow volunteers keep the cats clean, well fed, healthy, and happ and the shelter is extremely supportive of the foster families. I read some of the old reviews and want to reassure everyone reading that the current situation is not at all in line with the older bad reviews. All of the cats in the shelter are loved by the staff and volunteers, but we all want the kittens and cats to find their forever families! read more

If I could do no stars I would. I recently tried to adopt 2 kittens and after the meet and greet with the kittens in their foster home and a plan for the adoption to go forward I received a text saying my spouse and I did not seem enthusiastic enough . Someone willing to pay $500 dollars for kittens probably wouldn't do so if they didn't really want the kittens. My advice to your shelter. Don't have the meetups at the fosters house especially with children involved. The family although lovely and the kids very sweet monopolized the kittens and made it difficult to interact. It was also extremely awkward because the kittens were kept in a bedroom upstairs. I'm not impressed with how your staff dealt with us . I would never recommend you to anyone. You're doing those animals a disservice and robbed them of a good loving home. Very unfortunate read more

First review and maybe last review I'll ever write. My experience here was so bad I felt compelled to do this. Like many of the other reviewers mentioned, the attendants are very unwelcoming. Walked in with my girlfriend. We are both in our 30s, respectable citizens, work hard, no criminal record, good hygiene etc. and we have a 11 year old cat at home. Not to mention I think that we are damn good cat parents. If we adopt a cat we're gonna make sure to make it work not gonna kick him or her to the curb if it gets sick or something. But they didn't seem to give a s***. When we walked in there was a group of older women sitting in a circle. Only one acknowledged us. She asked if she could help us. We told her we are looking to adopt a cat. And then she said well we have no friendly or cute cats today, just the shy ones (this also corroborates some of the other reviews). There was no invitation to look around and see if we can find one that we connect with. But I noticed that there were many cats wandering around that we would've liked to get to know and they seemed curious about us. One of the women was also holding a baby kitten (again would've liked to have met it even though we were not exclusively looking for a kitten - an adult would've been great too). No questions about our living situation or whether or not we owned our own home etc. It seems to me that the women here get attached to the animals, which is totally understandable. But its a non profit and they are supposed to be finding the animals homes. If they are just there to play with cats then they should be paying taxes. Should you make the same mistake we did and decide to visit, there is a great shelter about 15 minutes away called Baypath humane society: https://www.yelp.com/biz/baypath-humane-society-hopkinton. We didn't find a cat to take home although they have a good selection. But more importantly the staff is friendly, helpful and attentive. I would definitely go back there. We had a wonderful experience with MWHS. Staff and volunteers are all extremely knowledgeable and friendly, they care about their cats and are very thorough to be sure they are going to loving and well prepared homes. As a no-kill shelter, many of the cats are not up for adoption, but are being cared for until they are, or will just be cared for as long as needed. They were very generous giving us some litter and food, a favorite bed and some new toys to help our shy boys make the transition a little smoother. If you are serious about providing a forever home and willing to be flexible about what type of cat(s) you can adopt (maybe a little older, one with special needs, or semi-feral), I highly recommend these folks!! read more

This place is wonderful. My family adopted two cats from here years and years ago. They are our angels. We recently fostered two kittens as well. One was sick so it took them a very long time to get adopted, but the Metrowest Humane Society made sure that they were good to go with a great family. My mother still visits as often as she can just to play with the cats that she has grown to love after months of us coming to visit our foster kittens that had to move back to the shelter. The volunteers are so nice and really care about the animals that they care for. We can't wait to foster again or adopt another fur baby from here when the time comes. read more

Very judgmental volunteers. They make you feel like you're not worthy to adopt. I recommend either Baypath or Milford humane. But groups are much more friendly and accommodating. read more

We adopted our two cats from this shelter just about three years ago. They were wonderful! Friendly people, beautiful shelter, thorough adoption application (they even turned down another family that was clueless about cats while we were there. They were very polite and nice about it, but it had to be done!) We couldn't have been happier. We had just lost our 22 year old cat to cancer and my fiancé (who had had the cat since he was 6 years old) was devastated. A few days after our loss, he said he needed a distraction so heartbroken, we went to Metrowest Humane Society. They were just the loveliest people and they had really great cats. I had never had cats before (aside from my fiancé's childhood friend), so I really wanted kittens. We found the most perfect pair of kittens and were so excited when we brought them home. Of course a few days later one started up with diarrhea, but not a problem - Metrowest had given us a list of vets to go to if something pops up in the first few days and they picked up the bill to treat both kittens for giardia. We called them a few times with questions and they gave us great information and were always very friendly on the phone. We still love our two kitties and thank Metrowest Humane Society for the gift they gave us! read more

I would give zero stars if it was possible. I should've trusted the other reviewers before wasting my time driving out to this place. The women working were rude, never had an actual conversation with me about my experience with cats (its extensive) or about what I was looking for. They were immediately rude, judgmental, and ridiculous. I wasn't even allowed to MEET the cat I was interested in adopting - they simply told me he wouldn't work for me, actually I wasn't allowed any further than the entryway! They are totally overzealous and unreasonable. I've been a volunteer with various animal rescues over the years and have never witnessed such ridiculousness. The goal is to find good homes for the animals - but you would never know it by the way they treat you when you walk in the door. In the end, I found a fantastic cat to add to our family at the Volunteer Humane Society in Lancaster and had a great adoption experience from truly professional and caring staff! read more

My husband and I adopted an older cat from this shelter last year. All of the cats looked in great health and the staff were giving them plenty of affection. We had already picked out a cat from the shelter's internet site. The cat had previously been mistreated and was extremely fearful of people, but we wanted to give her a quiet, caring home. The shelter employees took the time to get to know us and determine whether we would be a good match for a cat with such a history, and we learned that another prospective owner had already been turned down. I was impressed by this, because the shelter could just as easily have taken the first interested owner in an effort to get rid of this "problematic" cat. Metrowest gave us our cat's favorite toy and bed when we took her home, and called a couple of times over the next weeks to make sure things were working out. I should have paid more attention to the previous reviews. These people must not want the cats to be adopted. I went on a sunday afternoonn with husband & sons looking for a family pet. Recently put my 17 yr old dog to rest and wanted to get a friend for our current cat. Got confronted upon entering by an unfriendly woman, who told us that "if you are serious about adopting you need to fill out an application before you can see the cats." Ok fine, I'll oblige with that. A small gathering of women half-inside the visiting room (?) in front of us were more worried about their in-progress craft project than acknowledging us. As I'm mid-form another woman comes out and says "I don't think we have any cats for you today. They are all older, very shy, or special needs" I was puzzled because I didn't even get a chance to talk about what type of cat we had in mind. I started to explain that I actually DON'T want a young cat but she shot me down, motioned towards my kids and explained that "yeah but none of our cats would be compatible with the kids, they are all very shy". Very annoying. We have a cat and my boys (11 and 2) are extremely kind to him. As a family we have the utmost respect and love for all beings, including animals, in fact I have been vegetarian for 22 years! I crumpled my application and left. Pretty judgemental and ludicrous they didnt even take a minute to speak with us before making assumptions. Bummed me out, and I had really been looking forward to giving a pet a home with us after finally feeling like I was ready enough after my dog passed. By the way we went to Buddy Dog in Sudbury afterwards and they are very welcoming and friendly. Didn't find the right cat to adopt quite yet but we'll be back. Cheered me up to be able to pet and visit their kitties too and I'm sure it was good for the cats' morale to get visitors. read more

I brought my nieces with me to adopt a kitten and the attendant was VERY rude. She was inappropriate with my my family and even appeared to discriminate against my Brazilian in-laws. She would not allow my family to adopt a cat, but was very attentive to the Americans. Beware of her!! I will be taking my business else where. read more

Have never been treated so poorly during an adoption process. Have been animal lovers for years. After calling twice and confirming what we needed to adopt 2 kittens today they neglected to tell us that they would need to do a vet check. If they had told us I would have told them to do it right then and not wait for us to drive 90 minutes and then call after the vet had closed. When we arrived no one approached us to help. They just stared at us blankly. So we found the kitten room and opened the door to go in. We were snipped at by a volunteer that no one is allowed in a room until they have spoken to a volunteer. So out we went and stood waiting for someone to address us. After 5 to 10 minutes, that same volunteer came out and took my 9yo son in to play with the kittens. We, in the meantime, just stood waiting. After being there 30 minutes someone told us to fill out an application. Then 5 minutes later another women rudely questioned us about our previous cat. Appearantly they had secluded our son to question him and found out that our 17 year old cat, who was slowly dying of old age and losing weight, had ran out behind our car when we were backing up. Unfortunately our vet was unable to save her and she died. It was a horrible experience. But instead of talking to us she loudly exclaimed she was not comfortable with us and ran off in a huff. If she had taken the time to talk to us she would have learned that we had decided to keep these kittens inside. We waited another 10 to 15 minutes, now in a chair in the hallway, listening to them talk about us. We are good people with good hearts. We love our animals and take good care of them. These women were unorganized, unkind and uncaring. We waited for so long and they set up my child to be extremely disappointed. Shameful. There are so many animals waiting for homes but we will never go back here. read more

We simply loved the treatment we received from everyone at this shelter. They take care of each and every cat they have. It was simply a wonderful place and we got a Tuxedo type cat that we are absolutely in love with. She had just had two liters and was recuperating from that as well as from two infections. They would not release her until she was ready and even paid for a follow up vet visit for one of the infections. We named this beauty Socks because she is all black with little white paws. She is a two year old and doing just great. We believe Metrowest Humane Society is wonderful and their cats are treated very well! read more

I unfortunately lost my six year old cat Opie to a heart condition two months ago. It was not symptomatic until the day he died, so it was a sudden and shocking loss. Added to this were kitty losses from the past. As much as I wanted to adopt another companion for my "surviving" cat, I was nervous about getting attached to another that I could lose. But after seeing "John 2" online at MWHS, (now Opie 2), I did email them to inquire. Their response was knowledgeable, polite, empathetic and respectful, answering all of my "neurotic" questions. Their caring attitude depicted in a simple email motivated me to go and see this cat. I was interviewed first, and in person they turned out to be even more caring, friendly, and respectful. Intently listened to me. No pushing to get me to "buy". In fact, assured me that there would be no pressure whatsoever, that they wanted me to be sure and to take my time. The building was clean as can be, with kitties contentedly lounging, walking, playing throughout. It was bright and cheery and clean. Some were in areas closed off but comfortable and roomy. There was a nice office. I could see how much these dedicated people love these fur babies. Yes I was impressed! With my state of mind regarding my pets recently, it would not have taken much for me to change my mind and leave, but because of their PEOPLE skills, as well as their kitty skills, I ended up meeting and then adopting this sweet little boy. If anyone ever wants to adopt but are hesitant for a reason similar to mine, see these wonderful people at this awesome facility and you just may feel differently. read more

I wish I had seen these reviews before I fell in love with 2 of their cats. This shelter is very odd. It seems as if they do not want you to adopt their cats. I had been looking for 2 cats for quite awhile. It was heartbreaking to read the stories. I understand that animal shelters have an obligation to protect their animals but these folks are over the top. I felt as though I was dealing with a computer. Very odd place - they don't seem interested in allowing people to see their cats, let alone adopt them. I went there about 2 1/2 years ago, looking for a new kitty. I own my own home, and am an experienced cat owner. My previous cat had recently passed away at the ripe old age of 20. In all modesty, I think I'm exactly what they would want in a cat owner. Even so, despite the fact that their web site listed plenty of cats that were available for adoption, they wouldn't let me see any of them. Two of the staff members conferred behind a closed door, and then emerged to tell me rather abruptly that their cats were too new, too shy, not ready for visitors, etc. I can understand that not every kitty is ready to receive visitors, but between the fact that they listed several cats on their web site and the curt way they dismissed me, I was left with the impression that they weren't interested in having anyone adopt their cats. More recently, my sister and I visited them with our parents, who are looking to adopt a cat. Before driving over, we checked the web site, and even called to ask if two of the cats listed were available for adoption. We were assured they were. When we got there, before the staff would even talk with my parents, they had to fill out an application. Once they turned it over, the staff went behind closed doors, talked at length, and then emerged to say that none of their cats were ready for visitors. We explained that we had just been told by phone that two specific cats were available. The response was that those two cats were not available after all. My father asked pointedly whether the staff was concerned about his and my mother's age, and were told that wasn't a problem. (MWHS's adoption rates include a senior citizen discount, so I doubt age is a factor.) The staff simply said that none of their cats were able to be seen, and most of them probably never would be. I have no reason to believe that they don't care for their cats, but the next time I'm looking for a kitty, I won't bother going there - they really seem to have no interest in letting people see, let alone adopt, their cats. read more

Absolutely terrible experience. I was here a few years ago looking to adopt an animal and I still think about how awful the staff was. I can't say it enough, absolute nightmare. I was only in the process of looking and they were down the street for me so I thought I would take the opportunity to get any information available what is involved. The woman at the very front desk interrogated me and very rudely they would not let me even look at any animals. I've had cats my whole life and I was finally in a place where I was ready for a companion. I tried to recover the conversation with the woman but ended up leaving because I wasn't getting anywhere. I ended up going to the humane society in Jamaica plain, which was a much better experience years later and now have my wonderful cat for 2 years. It's unfortunate for the animals who aren't getting good homes but the staff here need psychiatric help. read more

MetroWest is a fantastic shelter - they spend so much time with adopters to. make sure their cats are a good fit with their adoptive families.
